Southern California Public Radio (Scpr) announced today that President and CEO Herb Scannell, 66, is retiring after a 40-year career in media. He has agreed to remain in his role until a successor is named. The board plans to immediately begin the search for a replacement.

“Herb has helped accomplish precisely what we hoped when he joined us four years ago,” said Drew Murphy, chair of the Board of Trustees of Scpr, “including building platforms to reach new audiences, aligning the organization to be more diverse in its staffing and its journalism, and creating a unified and more visible brand position in Los Angeles and the region. Southern California Public Radio president/CEO Herb Scannell has announced his plans to retire after four years at the organization, which operates Kpcc-fm (“LAist 89.3”), LAist.com and LAist Studios. Scannell, the Nickelodeon vet who later ran BBC Worldwide North America and Mitú, will remain in the role until a new successor is named.

The Scpr board has started a search for Scannell’s replacement. “Herb has helped accomplish precisely what we hoped when he joined us four years ago,” Drew Murphy, chair of the Board of Trustees of Scpr, said in a statement. Apple TV+ subscribers will be getting an inside look at the world of youth basketball via “Swagger,” the streaming service’s upcoming drama inspired by NBA star’s Kevin Durant’s childhood. Apple unveiled the trailer for the 10-episode series, which debuts Friday, October 29, on Thursday.

The series, which hails from creator and showrunner Reggie Rock Bythewood, will dramatize an aspiring NBA player’s experiences, as well as the families and coaches who walk the fine line between dreams and ambition, and opportunism and corruption. The series is led by an ensemble cast of stars including O’Shea Jackson Jr., Isaiah Hill, Shinelle Azoroh, Quvenzhané Wallis, Caleel Harris, James Bingham, Solomon Irama, Ozie Nzeribe, Tessa Ferrer, Tristan Mack Wilds, and Jason Rivera.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has rounded out the ensemble cast for Swagger, its new basketball-themed drama series from NBA superstar Kevin Durant and Imagine’s Brian Grazer. Joining leads O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Oscar-nominated Quvenzhané Wallis are series regulars Isaiah Hill, Shinelle Azoroh, Tristan Mack Wilds, Caleel Harris (When they See Us), Tessa Ferrer, Jason Rivera, Solomon Irama (Supergirl), Ozie Nzeribe (Shameless) and James Bingham. The series hails from Durant and his Thirty Five Ventures, Shots Fired co-creator Reggie Rock Bythewood, Imagine Television Studios and CBS Studios.

Written and directed by Bythewood, who also serves as showrunner, Swagger is inspired by Durant’s youth basketball experiences. It explores the world of youth basketball, and the players, their families and coaches who walk the fine line between dreams and ambition, and opportunism and corruption.
