When my partner asked me what movie I was watching perhaps “checking out Hundreds of Beavers” wasn’t the best of all possible answers. And I suppose trying to clarify it with “big hairy Canadian beavers” didn’t help. But despite the title and opening quote from St. Augustine, “Lord grant me chastity, but not yet!”, this isn’t that kind of a movie.
The new film from director Mike Cheslik and co-writer Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, the pair who gave us the Tews-directed Lake Michigan Monster, never really gets raunchier than an old episode of The Benny Hill Show as it relates the tale of Jean Kayak (Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) who, as we see in the opening animation, has lost his apple orchard...

Hundreds of Beavers is a wild ride of absurd humor, balancing influences from Looney Tunes to The Lobster in its unique storytelling. The film features a wacky world where animals are people in mascot suits and beavers are constructing a massive base on an ice pond. Despite the nonsensical storytelling, Hundreds of Beavers blends a child's imagination with a man's desires, offering a heartfelt message in its third act.
Clearly, Mike Cheslik’s latest film is a comedy. That part is easy. Trying to figure out where it specifically fits within that specific category is a whole other endeavor that should not be attempted by the faint of heart. Unless, of course, there is some wicked amalgamation out there that covers the fast-paced frenzy of Looney Tunes, the visual slapstick comedy of the beloved Three Stooges, and the absurdist science fiction moments captured in 2015’s The Lobster. While these references...

"Why does it smell like death in here?" Gravitas has released the official trailer for an indie comedy titled Mags and Julie Go on a Road Trip, marking the feature debut of Ryann Liebl, who also stars in the film and wrote the screenplay. It hasn't premiered at any festivals or anywhere else. Mags and Julie Go on a Road Trip is a heartfelt, laugh out loud buddy movie in the vein of Bridesmaids mixed with Grumpy Old Men, taking the audience on a journey of what it means to be a woman and balance life. Two friends go on a road trip to the Northwoods of Wisconsin and get more than they bargained for... Starring Ryann Liebl as Mags, and Elisabeth Donaldson as Julie, along with Jeremy Keene, Wes Tank, & Angie Campbell. Unfortunately this looks excruciatingly bad, even the humor is off despite friends having fun making a film.
