The Paper Trailer: Domhnall Gleeson Inspires to Live Up to Steve Carell’s Charisma in Spinoff
Image
Peacock has released the first trailer for The Paper, the forthcoming spin-off to the beloved mockumentary The Office. Domhnall Gleeson, who’s playing Ned Sampson, the newly appointed editor-in-chief for the struggling Midwestern newspaper, has showcased promise in his brief scenes in the trailer.

Although Steve Carell‘s iconic portrayal of Michael Scott remains a high bar to clear, it appears the creatives behind the show are taking an almost opposite approach to that of Scott, who was a lovable yet incompetent lead.

Domhnall Gleeson Leads a Struggling Newsroom in The Paper Trailer

With the same crew that helmed The Office returning for the spin-off, the sitcom is set in the same universe as that of Dunder Mifflin. Domhnall Gleeson, in contrast to Carell’s Scott, stars as the idealistic journalist Ned Sampson, who is trying to make the best out of his team of misfits and the struggling newsroom,...

“The Ballad Of Wallis Island , Gentle Stirring Drama On Discordant Musicality” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Let me confess I am a huge fan of Abba. Not that the sweet Swedish have anything directly to do with James Griffith’s euphonious The Ballad Of Wallis Island. But there is a wonderful sequence where the once-famous folk singer is introduced to the local grocer as a leading folksinger. The lady smiles back and says, “I only listen to Abba.”

The Ballad Of Wallis Island, so aptly titled, is about two singers who once dated and validated a band named McGwyer Mortimer. Now, they have gone their separate ways.

Only to be re-employed by a goodhearted islander to perform privately for him.

This pretty fragile but compelling film’s mainstay, the backbone so to speak, is the isolated scenic Welsh island where the washed-out folk singer Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden) arrives. Herb is immediately inveigled by the overpowering attention of his host Charles (Tim Key) who is a...

The Paper: Domhnall Gleeson manages a bullpen of misfits at a struggling newspaper in the trailer for The Office spinoff
Domhnall Gleeson
Coming into a company as the new editor-in-chief is challenging, but Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) is willing to give it the old college try. He doesn’t have the money to pay reporters, so he’s gathered a rag-tag group of volunteers to be the Truth-Teller’s editorial staff. Capturing all the inter-office shenanigans is the crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin’s corporate drama, and they’re just as sneaky in Toledo, Ohio, as they were in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Today’s trailer for The Paper takes us into the heart of Peacock‘s The Office spinoff, with more mockumentary mayhem than an inexperienced group of dimwits obsessed with parkour.

Truth-Teller is a bizarre operation. Although the newspaper has been around for over 100 years, its owner has let it fall to pieces. Oh, did I menation that they also sell toilet paper and seat covers, because what well-oiled machine doesn’t?...

Peacock’s ‘Office’ Spinoff ‘The Paper’ Points Its Mockumentary Cameras at a New Subject in Trailer
Image
The documentary crew that filmed The Office seemingly can’t get enough of paper.

Peacock on Thursday released a trailer for The Paper, a mockumentary set in the same world as The Office (and featuring Oscar Nuñez reprising his role as Oscar Martinez) that finds the crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin taking its cameras to Toledo, Ohio, and following the staff of the Truth-Teller, a newspaper that has been around for more than 100 years but is now apparently an afterthought for its owner, which also sells toilet paper and toilet seat covers.

Into that situation walks Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson), who’s determined to restore the paper to its former glory. He doesn’t have money to pay reporters, however, so he recruits volunteers from the paper’s existing non-editorial staff while the documentary crew follows his efforts — much to Oscar’s dismay. Watch the trailer below.

'The Paper' Trailer Brings Back the Awkwardness for Greg Daniels’ 'The Office' Spin-Off
Image
The Officedocumentary crew is back — and this time, they’re chasing headlines instead of paper sales. Peacock has dropped the first official trailer for The Paper, the long-awaited workplace comedy from The Office co-creatorGreg Daniels and Nathan for You'sMichael Koman, revealing a September 4 premiere date. The first four episodes will drop at launch, with two new episodes arriving every Thursday through September 25. The new series follows the familiar documentary film crew — yes, the one that once captured the chaotic charm of Dunder Mifflin — as they find a fresh subject: a struggling Midwestern newspaper called The Toledo Truth Teller, and the publisher trying to save it from extinction. Leading the charge is Star Wars star Domhnall Gleeson, who brings a very different energy to the boss's chair than Michael Scott or David Brent ever did. He might actually be competent.

Gleeson is joined by an ensemble that includes Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), Chelsea Frei,...

Dunder Mifflin is back. Well, not exactly. But the documentary crew that filmed inside the fictional paper company’s office is back, and this time with a new subject.

In the trailer, an ambitious journalist named Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) joins the Toledo Truth Teller as editor-in-chief, with big ideas on how to revitalize the newspaper, which shares office space with a toilet paper company. Tom Basden Wants the Heartwarming Success of ‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’ to Give British Indie Filmmakers Hope

Even Tom Basden is surprised by how affecting his new film is.

The Brit, who stars in and wrote The Ballad of Wallis Island with comedian Tim Key, is talking to The Hollywood Reporter about finally getting his film out in theaters in his native Britain and, oddly enough, being a little taken aback by its reception.

“We hit a few ideas early on,” he explains, referencing the short film he, Key and director James Griffiths first made about the characters all the way back in 2006. “Herb’s a little bit washed up, pining for his mid-20s, Charles has been obsessed with this band for a very long time and used to watch the gigs with his wife, who’s now died. Quite organically, a sadness began to come out on the page, a kind of longing,” Basden recalls. “It took us by surprise. And even at the point...

Peacock's The Office Spinoff Reveals Premiere Date (& Unusual Episode Rollout Plans)
Image
The Paper finally has a premiere date. The long-awaited spinoff of The Office will begin streaming on Peacock this September.

Peacock has revealed that the first four episodes of The Paper will premiere on Sept. 4, followed by two new episodes every Thursday through Sept. 25.This means the entire 10-episode season will be rolled out in less than a month. While the binge method (a.k.a. releasing the entire season at the same time) was once a popular release method for streaming originals, in recent years, streamers like HBO Max, Prime Video, and Disney+ have gone back to the tried and true one-episode per week release pattern, with some notable exceptions like multi-episode premieres or finales. With The Office a consistent streaming hit, the decision to burn through an entire season of its highly anticipated spinoff in just one month is somewhat unusual, although Peacock likely has a reason for doing so.

These seven comedy picks didn’t get the hype they deserved — now’s your chance to catch up.

There is a lot of content out there. So much that it’s easy to miss some seriously great movies and shows buried under the weekly avalanche of buzzy new releases. That’s where this list comes in. Each week, I’ll pick one under-the-radar genre gem from each of the major streamers — stuff you might’ve never heard of (and that’s exactly the point). This week’s theme? Comedy movies. Next week, it’ll be something totally different (I’m full of surprises). So let’s get to it — here are my favorite under-the-radar comedy movies to stream on every major platform right now.

‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’ Review
Image
Stars: Tim Key, Tom Basden, Carey Mulligan | Written by Tim Key, Tom Basden | Directed by James Griffiths

For many, getting a favourite musician to play a private gig is a dream scenario. But as fan culture often has toxic results, it is understandable that this scenario could deliver an unsettling thriller akin to Misery or Blink Twice. The Ballad of Wallis Island instead takes a kinder approach, which leaves a massively sweet surprise for viewers.

Based on the 2007 short film, The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island, the story takes place on the remote Wallis Island where eccentric lottery winner Charles Heath (Tim Key) lives alone. He has hired his favourite musician, Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden), to play an exclusive private gig. Herb intends to grin and bear it to fund his next solo album, but is surprised upon discovering that he will not be playing alone, as...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees the podteam — Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and Alex Godfrey — getting to grips with the definition of in media res as this week's listener question has the team chatting about some of their favourite films that throw you right into the action. Elsewhere, the gang talk about a busy week in the world of movie news, including Alex Garland's Elden Ring movie, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars delays, and — in a radical deviation into Pilot TV territory — HBO Harry Potter castings and the cancellation of Amazon's The Wheel Of Time series. The team also spend some time paying tribute to Empire's founding editor Barry McIlheney, who sadly died on Monday at the age of just 65, before reviewing a whole bunch of movies: namely The Ballad Of Wallis Island, Karate Kid: Legends, Mountainhead, The Ritual, and The Salt Path.

Tim Key at an event for The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025)
The Ballad of Wallis Island review – funny, melancholy yarn of a folk duo reunited by oddball superfan
Tim Key at an event for The Ballad of Wallis Island (2025)
Tim Key bring his trademark pleasant awkwardness to the island-owner who pays Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan to come and play for him

Fictional folk duo McGwyer Mortimer (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan) were big, back in the day – the day in question being circa 2009. But they weren’t that big: not Dylan-big, not even Cat Stevens-big. They graced some NME covers, they played Glastonbury, but even at the height of their success they could definitely pop to the shops without getting mobbed. Still, you’re always Dylan-big to your biggest fans, and Charles (Tim Key) is exactly that. He’s also a reclusive lottery winner, giving him the motive and the means to stage a private reunion gig for an audience of one on a remote island.

Basden and Key starring in a film about a folk band reunion might have you expecting something a little bit sketch comedy,...

The Ballad Of Wallis Island review | Acoustic comedy with charm to spare
Image
An estranged folk duo reunite for a private gig on an eccentric millionaire’s Welsh island in a thoroughly charming almost-rom-com. Here’s our The Ballad Of Wallis Island review.

The Ballad Of Wallis Island is a film of returns.

Writer-performers Tom Basden and Tim Key (plus director James Griffiths) are returning to the short film which earned them a BAFTA nomination in 2008. Carey Mulligan is returning to the folk music scene 12 years after playing the testy half of semi-fictionalised duo Jim & Jean in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. And it’s a return to the comedy once considered the British film industry’s bread and butter – a sweet, occasionally awkward three-hander afraid of neither melancholy nor jokes about Harold Shipman.

Basden plays Herb McGwyer, a down-on-his-luck musician who arrives on a remote Welsh island for a private gig. Unbeknownst to him, Tim Key’s accidental millionaire, Charles, has...

Netflix Ditches Sam Claflin’s $208M Box Office Smash But Keeps His 35%-Rated Dud
Image
Sam Claflin has worked on several benchmark projects, including the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. However, there is one film that made Claflin a household name, and that was his 2016 tentpole, Me Before You.

Based on Jojo Moyes’s book, the film became a sensation when it was released in 2016. Perched on the crackling chemistry between the 38-year-old and Emilia Clarke, Me Before You became a box office success despite receiving mixed critical reviews.

Me Before You became quite popular among the young fans, which later inspired Netflix to acquire the Ott distribution rights of the film. However, not many years later, the streaming giant let go of the film, but let Clafin’s lower-rated film Love Wedding Repeat still stay on the platform.

Exploring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke’s starrer Me Before You‘s box office success!
