France’s Lumiere Festival to Honor Michael Mann
Image
Veteran Hollywood director Michael Mann will be honored with the Lumière Award at the 2025 Lumière Festival, a French event focused on classic cinema.

Lumière Institute and festival director Thierry Frémaux called Mann — director of such features as Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali and Collateral — a major artist “straight out of Hollywood mythology…whose mark on cinema is everlasting.”

In a statement, the Institut Lumière said Mann’s filmmaking was “both rooted in a strong Hollywood tradition and embodies a personal and innovative cinema through his choice of subjects, his approach to directing, storytelling and aesthetics. With true independence — and at times, a certain solitude — he is one of the most important filmmakers in the history of cinema.”

Mann is the latest Hollywood icon to receive the Lumière honor, following such directors as Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton, as well...

Colin Farrell's Box Office Disaster He "Didn't Like" Is a Streaming Hit Almost 20 Years Later
Image
Although a box office and critical disaster upon its 2006 arrival, Michael Mann's film adaptation of the hit series Miami Vice has gained a strong cult following ever since, with many calling it one of the most underrated movies of the 2000s. Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising then that, almost two decades on, the film is finally finding a semblance of success, officially joining the top 10 most-streamed movies on Starz as of Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Having since been critically re-evaluated by many and labeled one of the director's most radical films, Miami Vice has gained a strong following in spite of its initial reception. Starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as undercover detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the film drew just a 47% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the movie faring worse with audiences, as they awarded Miami Vice just 43%. It would seem that the aforementioned Farrell would agree, with...

The Horror at Highrook Review: Mastering the Madness
Image
Nullpointer Games’ debut transports four investigators to the abandoned Ackeron estate, where whispers of occult rituals and a vanished family set the stage. Players move character cards across a stylized board representing rooms like the Laboratory, Chapel and Courtyard, then assign each investigator’s skills to tasks by dragging task cards into place. Mixing management elements with real‑time and pauseable action, the game asks you to juggle hunger, fatigue and sanity alongside clue hunting and item crafting.

At its core, Highrook asks you to balance strategic planning with narrative momentum. Early chapters guide newcomers through a clear tutorial, while later segments layer in new mechanics—sampling alchemy, ritual assemblies and environmental hazards—that force you to rethink your approach. Choices you make when allocating resources can shift character fates: sending the scholar into the machine room without boosts may save time but risks madness, whereas recruiting Mr Tubbs or...

Top Gun: Maverick Director Joseph Kosinski Is Making A New Miami Vice Movie
Image
If you're looking for a filmmaker to take a zeitgeist-y, high-octane, beloved slice of 80s pop culture and turn it into 21st century blockbuster gold, you could do far worse than hire the director who gave us Top Gun: Maverick. Which is why it makes perfect sense then that for their upcoming big screen retooling of synthed-out, super-stylised 80s NBC cop show Miami Vice, Universal Pictures have done precisely that. Yes, as reported by Deadline, none other than Joseph Kosinski is set to helm the studio's new Miami Vice movie, the first since Michael Mann's 2006 effort starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

Penned by Nightcrawler writer-director — and brother of Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy — Dan Gilroy, apparently this take on Miami Vice, which at its core is about two sharply dressed undercover detectives busting drug dealers on the Miami strip while listening to bona fide era appropriate bangers, has been in the offing for sometime.

Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson, and James Garner in Maverick (1994)
Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a Miami Vice remake for Universal Pictures. Nightcrawler scribe Dan Gilroy will write the script for the big screen project, an adaptation of the classic ’80s TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover cops. Bring on the pastels!

Kosinski will also produce the project through Monolith, and Dylan Clark will also produce through Dylan Clark Productions. This won’t be the first time Crockett and Tubbs have made their way to the big screen. Michael Mann directed a remake in 2006, which starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Although the film received mixed reviews at the time, not to mention a lackluster box office, it has since become a cult favourite.

A Severance Star Made Their Television Debut In A Classic Crime Thriller Series
Image
This post contains spoilers for season 1, episode 16 of "Miami Vice."

In 1991's "Barton Fink," the titular playwright (John Turturro) undergoes hellish horrors while experiencing the worst writer's block known to man. Stuck in a hotel room that is anything but a comforting nook for an artist, Barton finds little solace in those around him, and things get progressively worse when someone ends up getting murdered. The film defies genre categorization, playing out like a riveting, unconventional symphony with Barton's escalating anxieties at dead center. Turturro's character is the very picture of complexity, evoking both sympathy and disdain; it's no surprise that this multifaceted performance led to Turturro winning Best Actor at the 44th Cannes Film Festival.

That's just a sliver of Turturro's long and illustrious career, which had bloomed long, long before the actor played the measured, compassionate Irving B. in Apple TV+'s hit show "Severance." His breakthrough film,...

Liam Neeson Played A Villain In A Beloved '80s Crime Thriller Series
Image
Liam Neeson might be a household name now, but the inception of his career can be traced back to low-budget film/television titles and modest stage productions. In fact, filmmaker John Boorman noticed Neeson's potential when he was on stage for "Of Mice and Men," which led to his film debut in the 1981 Arthurian saga, "Excalibur." Sure enough, "Excalibur" opened many doors for Neeson, and he starred in a handful of projects over the years, including 1986's "The Mission."

In that film, Neeson played a Catholic missionary in 18th-century South America alongside Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, and this small yet impactful role altered the trajectory of Neeson's acting career. You see, De Niro introduced Neeson to an American casting director while they were filming together, which allowed the latter to acquire a work visa in the U.S. and work his way up the ranks. The television role...

“You know, she was all teeth”: Dick Wolf Didn’t Cast Julia Roberts for Her Talents in ‘Miami Vice’, It Was an Investment for Something Bigger
Image
Miami Vice – the show that made pastel look cool before it became a trend. The iconic ’80s cop drama wasn’t just about solving crimes and catching the bad guys, it was a lifestyle. Apart from Crockett and Tubbs being the definition of swag, the show also had a ton of celebrity cameos to its name, including one from Julia Roberts herself. The then-upcoming actress found her way to the fourth season of Miami Vice but little did she know that the motive behind her casting was not her talent.

Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Miami Vice | Credits: NBC

It didn’t take long for Julia Roberts to become everyone’s dream girl and the literal definition of a Pretty Woman. However, when she was first starting out in her career, she got herself a small role in Miami Vice playing a drug lord’s assistant. As it turns out,...

5 Theme Weeks Doctor Odyssey Needs to Do in 2025
Image
Doctor Odyssey will set sail again in March 2025. The ABC primetime soap has a weekly theme. The passengers get to encounter a week filled with unforgettable experiences and mystery illnesses. When the show returns, there are some theme weeks that fans would love to see.

80s Week

This sounded like a no-brainer. Don Johnson stars as Captain Robert Massey in the Ryan Murphy ABC series. The crew should’ve thrown an 80s-themed costume party during “Halloween Week.” It would’ve been perfect to see Max (Joshua Jackson) and Tristan (Sean Teale) dress as Crockett (Johnson) and Tubbs (Phillip Michael Thomas) from Miami Vice.

Murder Mystery

Sure, this show is a medical drama. But it would be fun to have a murder mystery cruise. The crew could interact with the passengers more on a personal level.

Captain Massey would encourage them to get involved with the murder mystery dinner somehow. Everyone...

The 12 Best Movies To Watch If You Like Sicario
Image
Movies don't get much better than Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario," an Oscar-winning 2015 drama that takes a hard look at the war on drugs as seen through the eyes of a naive FBI agent (Emily Blunt). Written by "Yellowstone" creator Taylor Sheridan, "Sicario" doesn't play by traditional rules. There are no heroes or villains or easy solutions to complicated problems. Instead, this world is littered with characters like Benicio del Toro's haunted assassin Alejandro Gillick and Josh Brolin's ruthless and curiously detached CIA operative, two men who willfully execute their ethically compromised missions because it's the only path that leads to something resembling success.

Dark, atmospheric, well written and acted, and boasting some of legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins' best work, "Sicario" is an experience you won't soon forget. There aren't many films like it.

That said, there are films we wholeheartedly recommend that at least come close. We've compiled...

How Hollywood’s Favorite ’70s Sports Car Inspired the New Ferrari
Image
No 1970s car exudes more Hollywood allure than the Ferrari 365 Gtb/4, known colloquially as the “Daytona.” Not only was it coveted by movie stars and rock gods, but it had several memorable screen appearances itself. One played a significant role in Robert Altman’s Elliott Gould-starring ode to Film Noir, The Long Goodbye. Perhaps most famously, a convertible version starred in 1976’s A Star Is Born, with Kris Kristofferson at the wheel and Barbra Streisand in the passenger seat.

Now, just as that movie inspired an acclaimed remake a few years back, the 365 Gtb/4 is having a revival. Ferrari design head Flavio Manzoni likes to suggest that all cars from the Italian exotic automaker are of-the-moment, reflecting their time. But he has not been shy in discussing the historical inspiration for the brand’s new, $459,000 two-seater, the 12Cilindri. Manzoni has said quite clearly that the front end and overall shape echo the Daytona.

Ryan Gosling Needs To Reboot Colin Farrell's 47% Disappointment After The Fall Guy
Image
In 2024, Ryan Gosling impressed in the movie remake of The Fall Guy, and his successful performance hints at another remake that he could be the star of. The Fall Guy originated as a 1981 action series which followed Colt Seavers, a talented stuntman who would use his action skills to track down criminals. In Gosling's remake, the actor portrays Seavers similarly, following him as he tracks down a missing celebrity, and at the same time, tries to win back the favor of his ex-girlfriend. The movie was a critical success, with an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

What makes The Fall Guy so awesome is not just its outstanding stunts or heartwarming plot. In many ways, The Fall Guy is an homage to Hollywood and all the people behind the scenes who make movies possible. The movie honors real stuntpeople and crew members with a wonderful montage at the end of The Fall Guy.

Miami Vice: We Revisit Michael Mann’s Divisive Big Screen Adaptation
Image
On September 16, 1984, a little TV show named Miami Vice hit cable and was a huge success for NBC. It was created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by an up-and-coming filmmaker named Michael Mann. The show would become iconic for its stylish depiction of the Miami drug scene, its use of contemporary music and its distinctive fashion. Years later, in 2006, a movie that has gone down as very divisive would be made. It’s a movie that defines what it means to be revisited. So today, let’s check out Michael Mann’s film adaptation of Miami Vice.

As stated earlier, Michael Mann helped create the captivating TV show. During the 1980s and 90s, Michael would go on to make some of the greatest films of the era, including Heat (which is getting a sequel soon), The Insider, The Last of the Mohicans, and Manhunter. In 2001, after wrapping his biopic Ali,...

Poolman Review
Image
Plot: A spacey pool cleaner (Chris Pine) discovers a plot to steal water from Los Angeles during a drought.

Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. That it was made at all is a testament to the power of celebrity, as it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.

So why is Poolman so awful? It comes down to the screenplay and Pine’s grating lead performance as a kind of...

Michael Mann's Miami Vice Doesnt Look Like Most Movies and Thats Good
Image
In 2006, audiences were thrown into the deep end when the film adaptation of the hit series Miami Vice was an esoteric and disorienting crime thriller that abandoned the tone and style of the source material. Michael Mann's efforts were divisive at the time, but Miami Vice has since been critically re-evaluated as a cult masterpiece by the auteur director. The film stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs, two undercover detectives involved in an investigation into a drug cartel between Miami and Cuba. Miami Vice has a lot going for it: the great performances by the leads, the dad-rock infused soundtrack, and Chinese screen legend Gong Li portraying one of the most nuanced and dynamic female characters in any of Michael Mann's films, a financial advisor to the cartel named Isabelle who sparks a relationship with Crockett. However, one of the more divisive trademarks of the...

Original Top Gun Star Sues Paramount Over Maverick Using His Likeness Without Permission
Image
Barry Tubb sues Paramount over unauthorized use of his likeness in Top Gun: Maverick, seeking compensatory damages and a trial by jury. Top Gun: Maverick faced a copyright infringement lawsuit early on, with allegations of copying elements from a 1983 California Magazine article. Paramount's plans for Top Gun 3 may be impacted by legal battles, but the success of Maverick suggests sequels are likely to follow.

Barry Tubb, the actor who played Leonard "Wolfman" Wolfe in the original Top Gun, is suing Paramount over using his likeness in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. Serving as the belated sequel to the hit 1986 action movie, Top Gun: Maverick saw Tom Cruise return to the role of Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell alongside a younger generation of aviators, including the son of his late friend and wingman Nick "Goose" Bradshaw. Set decades after the events of the first movie, the sequel also featured the return of...

10 Best Detective Duos From Crime TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Detective duos with opposing personalities challenge each other and make for effective crime-solving partnerships. Crime TV shows are as compelling because of the detectives as the mysteries, with iconic pairings capturing audiences' attention. The dynamic between detective duos, whether it leads to romantic tension or heartwarming friendships, adds to the enduring appeal of the genre.

Crime drama often stars troubled and tortured detectives, but it's when two detectives with wildly different personalities are forced to team up that the detective genre really reaches its peak. These pairs often begin with opposing perspectives and styles: one may be tight-lipped and serious, while the other is overflowing with charisma and a quirky sense of humor. Often, these duos challenge each other, making both characters question their beliefs and personal life decisions. In some cases, this tension fuels the duo's ability to work as effective detectives. Other times it leads to heartwarming friendships or even romantic tension.

The Original Story Pitch For 2006's Miami Vice Movie Closely Resembled Narcos
Image
Director Antoine Fuqua had a different vision for a Miami Vice adaptation, wanting to incorporate Pablo Escobar's story, similar to Netflix's Narcos. This vision would have been very different Michael Mann's version of the movie, which takes place in the present and stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. Fuqua's take on Miami Vice might have been more of a draw for audiences due to Escobar's infamy, but the adaptation is unlikely to ever happen now.

One original story pitch for the Miami Vice movie from director Antoine Fuqua would have been surprisingly close to Narcos. Serving as an adaptation of the 1980s TV show, director Michael Mann's Miami Vice was released in 2006 to mostly negative reviews, but it has since been reappraised somewhat in recent years. The film stars Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as detectives Crockett and Tubbs, who work a case involving drug lords and murder that becomes dangerously personal.

‘Life-changing impacts’: can a guaranteed income program work?
It’s Basic, a new documentary premiering at the Tribeca film festival, looks at the US program that gave in-need participants $500 a month, no strings attached

Michael Tubbs had just been elected the youngest and first Black mayor of Stockton, California, when he announced his intention to launch what would be the country’s first universal basic income program in decades.

The year was 2017, and the plan was to pay some residents $500 a month, no strings attached. Tubbs received death threats over the program. His critics accused him of disincentivizing work – if the government is handing out free cash, his critics asked, why would anyone want to get a job? They claimed that this was just a way for Tubbs to give money to those in his inner circle.

Tribeca-Bound Guaranteed Basic Income Doc ‘It’s Basic’ by Cannes and Emmy Winner Marc Levin Unveils First Trailer (Exclusive)
Image
The first trailer has been unveiled for Cannes, Emmy and Peabody-winning director Marc Levin’s documentary “It’s Basic,” which will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival.

The film examines several pilot programs launched in the U.S. that test the effects of giving everyday people an extra $500 to $1,000 monthly, with no strings attached. It aims to present an unbiased account of the benefits, criticisms, and outcomes of providing unconditional money to people in need, and examines whether Basic Income pilot programs eradicate child poverty and level the racial playing field through community-centric solutions.

The documentary features commentary by Michael Tubbs, the founder of Mayors for Guaranteed Income. At 26, Tubbs became mayor of Stockton, California. Under his stewardship, the city saw a 40% drop in homicides in 2018 and 2019, led the state in the decline of officer-involved shootings in 2019, was named the second most financially healthy city in California and...

New GTA 6 Leak May Have Just Revealed When The Game Takes Place
Image
A new Grand Theft Auto 6 leak has indicated what era the game may take place. Previous titles from GTA's so-called 3D era such as Vice City and San Andreas took place in the 80s and 90s respectively, but the more recent HD era has largely taken place in the present day with GTA 4 and 5, and many believed GTA 6 would follow this pattern.

A new leak from GTA6posts on Twitter suggests otherwise, however, showing a variety of clips from GTA 6's development, continuing from the massive, 90-video leak last year that revealed the game's protagonists and the return to Vice City. One new clip, in particular, may have revealed the era of the game's setting through the cost of cigarettes. Cigarettes are priced at $4.10, and when factoring in inflation and past costs of items over the years, this seems to point to GTA 6 being set in the late '90s to the early 2000s,...

The Best and Worst Movie-Gaming Crossovers of All Time
Image
The world has really woken up to gaming in recent years as this interactive form of entertainment has begun to be accepted by more and more people. As of 2022, more than half of the global population has become a gamer and the number of people taking up the hobby continues to grow. This phenomenon has been driven by many factors, including the fact that many of the biggest online casino brands offer no-deposit bonuses to new players just for creating an account, as well as the ever-growing interest in free-to-play video games like Fortnite and Cs:go.

There are many signs of this increasing prevalence of gaming, most notably in popular culture. More and more people can be seen dressing up in elaborate costumes for events like Comic-Con, and even more wearing gaming-related fashion items as they go about their daily lives.

Gaming also makes regular appearances in motion pictures. Some...
