Video Exclusive: Dylan Sprouse & Callan McAuliffe Reflect On Masculinity In Their Film ‘The Duel’

The Duel follows a young man who learns that his best friend has had an affair with his girlfriend. In response, the main character challenges his friend to a classic contest – a gentlemanly duel to the death.

McAuliffe delved into his experience, communicating his character’s perspective on screen. “In many ways, he’s not so dissimilar from myself,” he told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “You know, he’s a big fan of history, he’s a touch pretentious, he’s driven when he learns of his girlfriend’s infidelity, with, of all people, his best friend, that essence within his, that desire to not settle for ‘It is what it is,’ and to actually really do something about it, that comes to the forefront.”

‘The Duel’ Review: A Boring Bromance Ends With a Bang, as Both Dudes Draw Guns at 20 Paces
Image
A faux-elegant fable about how not to resolve your differences, made for dudes, by dudes, “The Duel” arrives at a time of intense division (and no small amount of scrutiny over gun use) in America. Releasing as a one-night-only screening via Iconic Events on July 31 before hitting streaming in August, the edgy comedy looks sharp enough, but lands like a rapier with a cork on it, as Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe play longtime besties who try to settle a dispute the old-timey way … by blowing each other away with pistols.

“The Duel” feels like a pretty clever idea at first, to the extent I found myself wondering why nobody had thought of it before, only to wind up asking why its two writer-directors didn’t think of it more. As it happens, my library contains no fewer than four books called “The Duel,” the shortest of which (by Joseph Conrad) runs a slender 112 pages,...

The Duel Review | A Thoughtful Exploration of Extreme Conflict Resolution
Image
The Duel is a surprisingly thoughtful exploration of masculinity and friendship through a dark comedic lens. Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe shine in their roles, leading to a powerful and unexpected ending. The film skillfully switches tones and never becomes predictable, and Patrick Warburton is a delightful treat.

Best friends become bitter enemies and resort to drastic action after a series of unforgivable betrayals in The Duel. What begins as a dark comedy takes a dramatically thoughtful turn that explores difficult themes of justice, loyalty, and most importantly, perceived masculinity in settling conflict. Their decision to end a grudge the old-fashioned way, through "gentlemanly combat" instead of peaceful negotiation, is handled with surprising dexterity. The film builds intrigue with compelling performances from a quirky ensemble. Their reactions vary drastically as the characters hurtle towards a sobering conclusion.

Colin (Dylan Sprouse) and Woody (Callan McAuliffe) were best friends until Colin slept...

The Duel Review: An Enjoyably Odd Satirical Ride
Image
Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts make their directorial debut with The Duel, an offbeat satire that explores the ridiculous lengths some will go for a misguided sense of honor. The film stars Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe as former best friends Colin and Woody, whose bond is shattered after Colin engages in an affair with Woody’s girlfriend.

Seeking to settle the score, Woody drags Colin along on a strange road trip that leads them to a mysterious estate, where an eccentric fellow named Christof, played brilliantly by Patrick Warburton, encourages the men to settle their dispute through an old-fashioned duel to the death.

As Colin and Woody embark down this absurd path of machismo one-upmanship, their loyal friends Sam and Kevin are pulled along, forced to take sides in the dispute. But beneath the darkly comedic surface of two dumb guys fighting over a girl, Matthews and Roberts...

The Duel Review — Dylan Sprouse Comedy Is an Amusing, Provocative Satire
Image
The directorial debut of Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts (writers of Prime Video’s recent rom-com Upgraded), The Duel, is one of the more star-studded independent films in recent memory, boasting a cast led by recognizable faces like Dylan Sprouse and Patrick Warburton. Although it has thin characters and occasionally repetitive humor, The Duel is an entertaining satire that is just provocative enough to work.

The Duel follows two former best friends who find themselves at a crossroads when one sleeps with the other’s girlfriend. This leads them to a mysterious estate, where they engage in a ritual duel to the death. Matthews and Roberts take some very ambitious swings with their directorial debut, and while they don’t all work, it’s at least an intriguing work of satire.

Is Flipped 2 Happening? Everything We Know
Image
Flipped 2's prospects are uncertain, with no concrete plans for a sequel. A 10-year reunion with the cast occurred, but no sequel was discussed. A Change.org petition suggests a high school setting for Flipped 2, with the original cast returning.

Flipped 2 is the long-hoped-for sequel to Rob Reiner's 2010 movie Flipped; unfortunately, there have been a few discouraging comments made about its prospects. Prolific actor and director Rob Reiner made Flipped for his Castle Rock Entertainment production company. Based on the novel of the same name by author Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped is a romantic coming-of-age story about two eighth graders who begin developing feelings for one another despite being complete opposites.

The film performed poorly at the box office, earning only $4.3 million (via Box Office Mojo) and reviews were lukewarm, with Flipped only garnering 55% on Rotten Tomatoes. Since its release, however, there's been a groundswell in appreciation for the film.

The objective of the mission was to investigate the Japanese defenses on Muschu Island, capture a Japanese officer for interrogation and discover the location of two naval guns on the island that were protecting a harbor. Eight commandos were landed as part of the operation, but only one survived.

5 of This Week’s Coolest Horror Collectibles Including a Brand New Version of Coppola’s ‘Twixt’
Image
Killer Collectibles highlights five of the most exciting new horror products released each and every week, from toys and apparel to artwork, records, and much more.

Here are the coolest horror collectibles unveiled this week!

Universal Monsters Bobbleheads from Neca

Neca will add four Universal Monsters to its Head Knockers line of bobbleheads in August. Priced at 34.99, Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Dracula, and The Wolf Man are made of hand-painted resin and stand 8″ tall.

The sculpts are pretty fun on these, although I’m not sure why the necks are comically long when Neca’s other bobbleheads don’t have that issue. The prototypes are pictured, so maybe they’ll iron that out before production.

B’Twixt Now and Sunrise: The Authentic Cut Blu-ray from Lionsgate

2011’s Twixt was an ambitious, if flawed, Gothic horror film from the great Francis Ford Coppola that failed to land with critics and audiences alike.

The Walking Dead What If-Style Spinoff Pitched By Stars
Image
Callan McAuliffe and Teo Rapp-Olsson say they'd like to see a What If...? style spinoff series for The Walking Dead. The long-running zombie horror series first premiered in October 2010 and ran for 11 seasons, before the series finale debuted on November 20. McAuliffe, who played Alden in the series, first appeared in season 8 as a member of the Saviors, and departed The Walking Dead after Alden's tragic season 11 death. Rapp-Olsson played Sebastian Milton, one of season 11's main antagonists, whose episode 18 death sparked massive consequences for the series finale. Though The Walking Dead has come to an end, the franchise is still going strong, with three new spinoff series currently in development: Daryl Dixon, Rick and Michonne, and Dead City, the last of which is set to premiere in April 2023.

In an interview with Insider, 12 Walking Dead cast members were asked to share their spinoff ideas for the franchise – and McAuliffe and...

Why We're Worried About The Walking Dead's Series Finale
Image
Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11, episode 23

After The Walking Dead’s penultimate episode, there’s cause for concern that the series finale won’t live up to expectations. The Walking Dead season 11, episode 23, titled “Family,” set up a climactic, high-stakes battle with the Commonwealth to end the series. But while the series has certainly put a great deal on the line for The Walking Dead’s final episode, doubts remain about the ending.

With The Walking Dead coming to an end after an impressive, 11-season run, it goes without saying that the AMC series needs a strong finish. Though most of the characters associated with the show are no longer a part of the main cast, viewers have been following the journeys of several of its biggest players for a number of years. For that reason, it’s important that The Walking Dead provide a satisfying conclusion to...

The Walking Dead Showrunner Explains Shocking Midseason Premiere Death
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The Walking Dead is back...

But an essential character did not survive The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 9.

We're about to delve into spoiler territory, so consider yourself spoiler warned.

Callan McAuliffe's Alden was confirmed dead in the premiere's final moments, after being Mia since The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 3.

The fan-favorite was last seen in a bad way when Negan and Maggie left him in a church when they tried to escape from the Reapers.

Angela Kang shed light on how the big death went down in an interview with Comicbook.com.

"I think the Reapers — who all have military training, special forces training, military contractor training — they know how to track people," Kang said to the outlet.

"They were on the trail of our folks, or they picked it up at some point, and a guy was sent out to pick up the loose ends, and they found him.

‘The Walking Dead’ Showrunner Breaks Down Explosive 11B Premiere
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 9, “No Other Way.”] The Walking Dead is back, and the 11B premiere of AMC’s post-apocalyptic zombie drama was nothing short of explosive. To recap, after firing many fireworks at our favorite survivors’ heads, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) officially ended the war against the Reapers with a slaughter. A lovelorn Daryl (Norman Reedus), Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), redemption-arc Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and a revenge-seeking Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari) helped Maggie to obtain the food needed to save the remaining Alexandrians from near-starvation, despite some varying opinions on her little murder spree. Reapers leader and Daryl’s former S.O. Leah (Lynn Collins) escapes. Also, we finally learn the fate of the injured Alden (Callan McAuliffe) after many episodes away; and Negan abandons the group, walking off into the woods (more on that below). But the biggest reveal? Daryl removing a Commonwealth helmet from his head in...

Crossed Phone Lines Romance Brews in Indie Film 'Him & Her' Trailer
About him & her (2023)
"I just want to listen to your voice... it makes me feel safe." Anam Cara Films has released an official trailer for the indie film Him & Her, a romantic drama from Chicago filmmaker Íce Mrozek. It takes us back to 1989 when everyone still used landline telephones, telling a story about a unique crossed lines connection. These crossed lines lead to a life changing conversation between two strangers, who eventually meet in an unusual way. "I just want this feeling to last." Starring Cristina Spruell and Callan McAuliffe as "her and him". This reminds me of the film Frequency but with an entirely different premise, though the phone is important to plot. I like these kind of stories and I'm curious to find out what happens when they finally try to meet up. Maybe it will work out? Or maybe it will mean something anyway no matter what happens? Here's...

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 3 Review: Hunted
Image
This The Walking Dead review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 3

“Hunted” opens in a flurry of action. Blades and arrows come flying in out of the darkness. Most of Maggie’s companions stumble and fall, as do their hunters. Some get back up and scramble away towards safety, or in pursuit of someone. Most don’t. At least, not until they presumably turn into walkers and join the omnipresent background noise of the undead. As far as cold openings go, this one runs hot, and while it burns itself out quickly, it’s a perfect set-up for the following episode, which features The Walking Dead in hunting mode for both the A plot and the B plot.

At the center of both plots is hunger. Everyone in Alexandria is hungry, slowly starving to death as rations peter out and the fields fail to provide enough to sustain the population.

The Walking Dead Cast Teases Season 11, the Long Road to the Series Finale
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The final season of The Walking Dead will consist of 24 episodes to become the biggest season yet.

TV Fanatic recently got the chance to speak to Khary Paton (Ezekiel), Eleanor Matsuura (Yumiko), Josh McDermitt (Eugene), and Callan McAuliffe (Alden) as part of a Zoom session with other reporters.

"We get a lot of questions about mourning the end, but it is a long end. This is a nice, long victory lap," Payton explained of the expanded final season.

"We're going to be shooting well into next year," he added. "If we started crying right now, we would be spent by the time we get done. I'm still in the process of enjoying telling the story."

The good news for fans is that what we got to see on The Walking Dead Season 11 trailer (see below) was from very early into the shooting process.
