Exclusive: Paramount Global just added another buzzy crime drama to its LA Screenings slate.

Paramount Global Content Distribution has picked up rights to Peacock’s Miami narcotics-dealer family drama M.I.A., which is from Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque and MRC and stars Shannon Gisela. Buyers will be introduced to the series over coming days.

Hundreds of acquisitions execs are expected on the Paramount lot, where other shows such as Boston Blue and Sheriff County are also among the wares on offer following last week’s Upfront pick-ups.

As for M.I.A., it’s going international after Peacock gave it straight-to-series order last year. Synopsis reads: “Running drugs is a family affair for Etta Tiger Jonze (Shannon), but when the family business is threatened, Etta is thrust into a life she never expected, forcing her to use her wits to survive as she navigates Miami’s criminal underground.”

Alberto Guerra has been cast as a series regular in Peacock’s upcoming crime series M.I.A., with Edward James Olmos, Billy Burke, and Sônia Braga joining the project in guest-starring roles. Set in South Florida, the drama follows a woman pulled deeper into her family’s criminal operation after a major disruption threatens its survival.

Guerra, whose recent work includes Griselda and The Accident, joins a main cast that includes Shannon Gisela, Brittany Adebumola, Dylan Jackson, Maurice Compte, Danay Garcia, Cary Elwes, Gerardo Celasco, and Marta Milans. Gisela plays Etta Tiger Jonze, whose family runs a drug operation that spans the Miami area. After a shift in the organization’s stability, Etta must rely on instinct and intelligence to navigate a landscape shaped by violence, loyalty, and power.

Celasco is a Salvadoran actor, born in Miami and raised in El Salvador, who has called Los Angeles home since 2005. He made his TV debut with a lead role on the NBC Daytime show Passions, which he followed with various film and TV roles, including Moneyball, Battleship, the Fox series Bones and Person of Interest for CBS.

Celasco was the male lead on the Netflix limited series National Parks for ABC, with guest arcs in Good Sam for CBS and ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder. He also played the male lead of Roku’s Swimming With Sharks opposite Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka. He will next be seen in Netflix’s The Waterfront and Carlton Cuse’s Pulse for Peacock. He is repped by Entertainment 360, The Gersh Agency and Goodman Genow Schenkman.

Milans starred in Warner Brother’s “Shazam!” franchise and Netflix’s hit original series White Lines from the Emmy award winner producer Álex Pina. Additionally, she starred in Pina’s Spanish television series The Pier and the Netflix Spain series The Minions of Midas, directed by Academy Award winner Mateo Gil. Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi explained how "unkind" he believes critics were towards the DC Extended Universe film amid its poor box-office showing.

Speaking on The FilmUp Podcast, Levi expressed how much he enjoyed playing the all-powerful yet goofy titular superhero. However, he was disheartened by the critical reception and was put off by how negative the reviews were. He said, "As an experience, I really enjoyed making that movie and I really enjoyed playing that part. I don’t know what the future holds for it all because, unfortunately, the second movie was not as well-received. I mean, the audience score is still quite good, but the critic score was, I don’t know, very oddly and perplexingly low and people were insanely unkind."

"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" is in theaters after a years-long wait. When we meet up with our heroes in the new chapter, the Shazamily has been fighting crime and not doing the best job of it. They get distracted by kittens and have fun with their powers because after all, they're kids They battle it out with the Daughters of Atlas and save the world while trying to keep their secret safe from their foster parents (Marta Milans and Cooper Andrews) and finish growing up. 

These kids are very busy, and perhaps they've forgotten about Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) now that he's in jail. Of course, they didn't see what audiences did; a little caterpillar/criminal genius named Mister Mind approaching Dr. Sivana in his cell in the after-credits scene.

DC will need to crank the PR machine into overdrive if they want Shazam! Fury of the Gods to perform heroically at the box office. According to the first round of projections, New Line Cinema‘s superhero sequel is tracking for a low-end domestic debut of $35 million to $40 million. Meanwhile, optimistic analysts think the film will bank as much as the first film, which pulled around $53.5 million in North America.

It’s worth noting the $35 million prediction comes from Nrg, Hollywood’s leading research firm. They know a thing or two about reading tea leaves for blockbuster debuts. Still, they need to be corrected from time to time. There’s a chance Shazam! Fury of the Gods will overperform, but I’m not holding my breath.

Warner Bros. dropped the second trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods just after the poster unveiling. Zachary Levi is joined by newcomers Dame Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler for this entry. The new trio of ladies plays the daughters of Atlas, one of the sources of power for Shazam.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Bestowed with the powers of the gods, Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still learning how to juggle teenage life with having adult Super Hero alter-egos. But when the Daughters of Atlas, a vengeful trio of ancient gods, arrive on Earth in search of the magic stolen from them long ago, Billy—aka Shazam—and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world.“

The superhero family also makes their return.

We’ve got a fresh new trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods coming our way tomorrow, but a new poster has also dropped (courtesy of IGN) which serves as a little appetizer. We’ve got Zachary Levi as the main man, with the Daughters of Atlas behind him, and appearances from Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard and Shazam’s super-hero family.

After already poking fun at Universal's Fast & Furious franchise, a new Shazam! Fury of the Gods TV spot reveals an epic dragon fight in the DC Universe sequel and the perfect Game of Thrones joke. Zachary Levi is returning to lead the cast for the upcoming film after making his Dcu debut in 2019's Shazam!, not only reuniting with much of the first film's cast as well as former horror director David F. Sandberg and screenwriter Henry Gayden. Following multiple delays due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, production on Shazam! Fury of the Gods kicked off in 2021 and anticipation continues to grow leading up to its arrival.

A festive Shazam! Fury of the Gods video shows Rachel Zegler dancing in the snow. A sequel to 2019's Shazam, the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods finds Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who can transform into the titular adult superhero played by Zachary Levi, and his foster family taking on the three Daughters of Atlas. To portray this trio of villainesses, Shazam! Fury of Gods has made three exciting additions to its cast with Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler as Anthea.

In honor of the holiday season, returning director David F. Sandberg shared a video from behind the scenes of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The video was shared by Sandberg to recognize "the last Christmas before Shazam 2 comes out" and features West Side Story's Rachel Zegler and Marta Milans, who plays Billy's foster mother, dancing in a parking lot as snow falls.

The trailer appeared to a hyped up crowd during Warner Bros. Pictures’ theatrical panel in Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con 2022. Zachary Levi, Director David F. Sandberg, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer and Lucy Liu attended the panel to discuss the sequel set to open in theaters internationally beginning 15 December 2022 and in North America on December 21, 2022.

"Bigger action sequences, bigger set pieces." Get a first look at the Shazam! sequel in the works. During the DC FanDome event this weekend, Warner Bros also revealed a first look at David F. Sandberg's Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a sequel to his 2019 superhero comedy starring Zachary Levi. Not too much is known about this sequel yet, except that Shazam will be battling Hespera & Kalypso, and will have a whole new "superhero family" on his side. In addition to Levi, the new cast features Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, Rachel Zegler, Meagan Good, Grace Fulton, and Marta Milans; along with Djimon Hounsou, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer returning from the first one. This teaser is more of a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, showing tiny bit of footage, concept art, B-roll, and shots of them filming. This actually looks good so far, the first one was quite fun.

Following on from our first look at Shazam! and the rest of the Marvel family standing proudly in their new costumes, Helen Mirren has now been spotted adorned in superhero garments while filming upcoming DC sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The Oscar winning actress joins production as the villain of the piece, Hespera, and she looks every bit the demi-god in battle armour and crown.

Mirren's Hespera costume slots perfectly into the world of DC, and seeing the esteemed actress portray one of the furious gods in the Shazam sequel will likely be one of the movie's highlights. Along with the armor, Mirren also has a sword at her side, a weapon she will no doubt wield during the movie, much to everyone's delight.

Dr. Thaddeus Sivana will not return in Shazam: Fury of the Gods. In an interview with Den of Geek, Mark Strong confirmed his absence in the movie, which is currently filming. This news makes sense considering the casting of both Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu in villainous roles. Having Dr. Sivana return in the sequel could be too complicated. Strong (who is hyping up his newest film Cruella) explained why he isn't the sequel.

"I literally spoke to the producer last night, because I saw that Zach Levi tweeted that they're about to start shooting in Atlanta. Dr. Sivana isn't in Shazam! 2. What's happened is, I think Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu and perhaps someone else - they've got some female villains in. When we last saw Shazam’s arch-nemesis Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) during a mid-credits sequence at the end of 2019’s Shazam!, the mad scientist and Seven Deadly Sins host had been defeated by the title hero and was firmly ensconced at Rock Falls Penitentiary.

But that does not mean Levi does not see the potential of a dark take on his superhero character. When a fan asked the actor on Twitter if he would like to see a cinematic adaptation of the comic series Kingdom Come, which features possibly the darkest take on the character of Shazam ever, Levi gave his full support to the idea.

In the world of superhero movies, it is hard to think of two films that are more dissimilar than Shazam! and Logan. One is a bright and cheery kids movie, while the other is a gritty and grim meditation on growing old and dying. Yet, as David F. Sandberg, who directed Shazam! recently pointed out on Twitter, the two films have something in common in terms of how they acknowledge the larger superhero world they inhabit.

"In the world of Shazam the events of Man of Steel & BvS happened but we also see that there are toys and merchandise of these characters and people who are fans, like Freddy. Kind of like how in Logan we see that X-Men comic books exist but X-Men are also real at the same time."

Ever since Man of Steel debuted in 2013, the Dceu has been battling a general perception that the films in the franchise are unnecessarily dark and "edgy". The problem is a vocal minority of fans loudly dismiss any Dceu films that lean more towards comedy or fluff. Director of Shazam. David F. Sandberg recently had such a run-in with a fan on Twitter. The Shazam 2 fan art shows a doctored image from the original Shazam! film, where the titular hero's appearance has been changed drastically to make his vibrant red suit a dull gray.

For the last few days, a rumor has been making the rounds on the internet that Henry Cavill will have a cameo in Shazam 2, currently in development. The rumor has been picked up by enough news outlets for the director of the franchise, David F. Sandberg, to finally take to Twitter to clear the air. The filmmaker refused to either deny or confirm the rumors, because of how quickly things can change behind the scenes of a film production.

White Lines has been cancelled so, there won't be a second season of the thriller series. The Netflix show revolves around a woman's quest to discover who murdered her brother after his body is found 20 years after his disappearance.

It was widely reported that DC Comics and Warner Bros. announced Shazam 2 is officially happening over the weekend at Ccxp. We need to pump the brakes just a bit on that, though. Over the weekend, Warner Bros. brought a big showing for DC Films to Comic Con Experience in Brazil, which included the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, a brief preview of The Suicide Squad from the set with director James Gunn and news that Matt Reeves will bring The Batman to the event next year. While there were reports that the studio confirmed the Shazam sequel as well, that isn't the case.
