Mad Men is quietly careening toward its May 17 series finale on AMC, offering up subtle hints about the possible endgame during these last episodes with the addition of more guest stars — both old and new. Spoilers ahead for anybody who has yet to watch. Sunday's episode, "The Forecast," brought the notable return of Glen Bishop (played by creator Matthew Weiner's son Marten Holden Weiner) and the addition of a suitor for Joan (Christina Hendricks) in Bruce Greenwood. It also marked the first real focus on the Francis household and Sally (Kiernan Shipka) since the show's recent return.

Funny or Die enlisted two of TV's most endearingly awkward young men, Breaking Bad's Rj Mitte (Walt Jr.) and Mad Men's Marten Holden Weiner (Glen Bishop), to parody one of film's more endearingly awkward movies: Weird Science. In a short called "Weird Science 2," the boys program their own sex monster (Alessandra Ambrosio), and after things go awry, we learn that next time they should just cook meth or something. The fifth season of AMC's "Mad Men" came to a close Sunday night, wrapping up what has been arguably among its strongest seasons yet. No small feat considering the show has taken home four consecutive Emmys for Best Drama and been proclaimed one of the best shows on TV by nearly every critic reviewing the medium. After a run of 13 almost uniformly excellent episodes, it becomes harder to remember that this season had gotten off to a rocky start. When the network decided to pull the show out of its summer slot to make room for the other best show on TV ("Breaking Bad"), fans had to endure a brutal 17-month wait. Contract negotiations between creator Matthew Weiner and the studio were made public and gave both the network and creator some negative buzz to overcome.

“Everything you think is going to make you happy just turns to crap." --Glen Bishop (Marten Holden Weiner) This whole season of "Mad Men" has been so shadowed with death that the fact that someone at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce finally embraced oblivion wasn't quite a shock. But that is was Lane (Jared Harris), whose embezzling his way out of a precarious financial position was bound to catch up with him eventually, was unexpected -- like some others out there, I would have put my money on Pete (Vincent Kartheiser). And Lane's surreptitious stealing of a few thousand dollars to get himself out of a tax jam (his "13-day loan") just didn't seem all that serious, either to us or to him -- confronted by Don, he tries to laugh it off and is shocked when...

"Everything you think is going to make you happy just turns to crap." If that's not a statement about Mad Men's major themes, I don't know what is. While it's outsider Glen Bishop (Marten Holden Weiner) who utters those words at the end of the episode, they could be said by just about any character on the drama, offering a prism through which to see that our expectations are often dashed against the rocks when faced with the reality of our situations. Happiness, as Don Draper (Jon Hamm) would argue, just begets more happiness, but more importantly, the sensation of happiness demands further happiness. It's elusive and short-lived and, as one gets older, the simple things that might have once made us joyful--driving a car, an illicit cup of coffee with tons of sugar--turn to ash in our mouths. Happiness, it seems, is as much about anticipation as it is expectation.
