In ‘To Kill a Tiger,’ a Nation Battles Its Worst Demons
Image
On the surface, Nisha Pahuja’s “To Kill a Tiger” doesn’t look that different from any other documentary set in rural India. The visual palette is bright yet rustic. The characters, real figures, speak a thick East Indian dialect of Hindi, take pride in their community, and allow cameras into their lives.

But the award-winning film, executive produced by Dev Patel and Mindy Kaling, along with the National Film Board of Canada, does what so much media focused on social change cannot: It goes right to the source. “To Kill a Tiger” is about one family seeking justice for the sexual assault of their 13-year-old daughter — but as the legal battles wears on, the documentary roots out the societal structures and collective thinking that find such brutal crimes pervasive and largely unreported in the world’s largest democracy.

“To Kill a Tiger” opens with the survivor’s father, Ranjit,...

Delhi Hc seeks Centre's stand on plea against WhatsApp privacy policy
Image
New Delhi, Feb 3 (Ians) The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the central government's response on a petition challenging the new privacy policy of social networking platform WhatsApp.

A bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh issued notice to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology seeking their stand on the plea by March 15.

Prior to this, another petition regarding the new privacy policy matter was filed in the court but this is the first time a notice has been issued to the central government in the matter.

Notably, WhatsApp has asked users to either give their consent to sharing data with Facebook or lose their accounts after February 8. The policy was, however, put on hold till May 15 due to a massive backlash by the users.

The petitioner Seema Singh, through advocate Meghan, argued that impact of the WhatsApp policy can cause a catastrophe with respect to the data of the citizens.

In 2012, a young medical student, Jyoti Singh, was gang-raped and brutally beaten by six men on a bus in New Delhi, later dying of her injuries. This sparked a nation-wide protest, with thousands calling on the government, and Indian society, to treat rape as the serious crime that it is. Indian-Canadian director Deepa Mehta, known for her more straightforward dramas and comedies (Bollywood/Hollywood, Water), takes a different direction in her experimental docudrama Anatomy of Violence, an imagined examination of the victim and perpetrators of the crime, their psychology and motivations. The film tells the story of the six rapists, telling each of their stories in moments from childhood and young adulthood, including the day of the crime. Interspersed is the story of the victim, renamed...

India’s Daughter: ‘I made a film on rape in India. Men’s brutal attitudes truly shocked me’
Leslee Udwin spent two years making a documentary on the horrific rape and killing of young medical student Jyoti Singh. And it asks, has the attack really spurred a sea change for gender equality in India?

Jyoti Singh, 23, had cause to celebrate. It was no ordinary Sunday. “Happiness was just a few steps away,” says her father, Badri Singh, a labourer. On this Sunday, 16 December 2012, Jyoti, a name that means light and happiness, had just completed her medical exams to become a doctor. Speaking excellent English, she spent nights working in a call centre from 8pm until 4am,...
