Ghild : Full Short Film and Q&A With Director David Yarovesky
Hey kiddos, Melissa here… and I have a short film that you have to see! Ghild, from Rose and Bomb Productions in association with Yarvo Productions, is a fairy tale for the giant child in all of us.

Ghild stars Michael Rosenbaum as Brauly Gullivan, an 8-year-old boy who has grown abnormally larger than those in his community. As Brauly struggles to fit in, his parents find raising a giant child, or Ghild, to be rather difficult.

You can watch Ghild in its entirety here:

Interview with Director David (Yarvo) Yarovesky

How did you and Michael Rosenbaum come up with the concept of Ghild? How did the idea come about?

Yarvo: Well I should say that me, Rosenbaum, and Rob Danson all created Ghild. We all talked about doing something and when we got in a room, we started talking about a friend of Rosey’s who has a...

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Shorts’ Long on Comic Chaos, Short on Charm
Chicago – Robert Rodriguez is a one-man moviemaking machine. He’s always looking for the fastest and most cost-effective ways for getting his work out to the public. His success story, memorably chronicled in the book “Rebel Without a Crew,” is genuinely inspiring, yet his films often fail to resonate as anything other than exercises in design. In his latest film, he comes up with two multi-purpose objects (a man-made product, “the black box,” and a magical “wishing rock”) that can do pretty much anything his characters want them to do. They represent the central problem in Rodriguez’s work: he seems to think that since digital filmmaking can allow him to do anything, he should, without ever thinking it through.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Thus, the public is treated to a shapeless, rambling bore like “Shorts,” which feels like it was slapped together in Rodriguez’s garage. Its story is told out...

[DVD Review] Shorts
When he isn’t skulking around the dark and blood-splattered alleyways of the Mexican underworld, director Robert Rodriguez runs a nice, profitable sideline in garish, high-energy kid flicks. A quick Read of his resume: Spy Kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Planet Terror, Shorts, and next up Machette, can give the impression the helmer is the ultimate proponent of the “one for them, one for me” school of filmmaking. Except, of course, they’re all for him. Once again he cheerfully does the whole shebang; writer, producer, handling the score, overseeing the effects, presumably on a diet of enough sugar to single-handedly raise the Gdp of Brazil. Perhaps he just likes the change of pace.

With that in mind this is yet another high-concept, pre-teen wish-fulfillment fantasy that finds the corporate controlled suburb of Black Falls thrown into colorful CGI chaos when...

Plot: A wishing rock wreaks havoc in the hi-tech community of Black Falls when it falls in to the hands of the children of the area.

Who’S It For? Kids who have a tough time sitting still and wish that anything, anything is possible.

Movie:

Shorts flies fast and that’s probably the best part for parents. It will seem like it will go by quickly. As far as making sense, it’s just not going to happen. A pause and fast forward button can pop up at any time for Jimmy Bennett as Toe Thompson. He doesn’t seem like a bad kid actor, but he’s not ready for the narration that goes along with the role.

Shorts (Review)
Shorts Directed by Robert Rodriguez Breezy and entertaining while preserving its intelligence, Shorts is a rarity in this unexciting celluloid summer. The film revolves around a magical rock that allows wishes to become reality.  As one would expect, chaos slowly ensues as every character who gets ahold of the rock finds his wishes backfire into a chaotic mess, as their wishes come true. It is an old concept--you cannot give the power of God to us mere humans.  It got us cast out of the Garden of Eden. An important element to the film's success is that the two main child actors are very solid.  Narrator/protagonist Toe Thompson is ably played by Jimmy Bennett, who posesses terrific comic pacing.  Writer/director Robert Rodriguez also gets a funny yet darkly villainous performance from newcomer Jolie Vanier as Helvetica Black.  Her character was supposed to be hiding a crush on our protagonist Thompson.

"Inglourious Basterds" Wins Glorious Box-Office! See Weekend's Complete Top 10 Box-Office Films!
Quentin Tarantino's kill Hitler revenge fantasy claimed victory at the box office with a $37.6 million debut!

Starring Brad Pitt, "Inglourious Basterds," is Tarantino's best opening ever, beating the $25.1 million debut of 2004's "Kill Bill - Vol. 2." The World War II film also scored high globally. Opening in 22 countries, "Inglourious Basterds" earned $27.5 giving it a worldwide total of $65.1 million.

(See my "Inglourious Basterds" movie review right here)

"Inglourious Basterds" is the first true hit by the Weinstein Co. since leaving Disney-owned Miramax four years ago.

Meanwhile, Tarantino's comrade, Robert Rodriguez, didn't fare so well. Rodriguez's children fantasy "Shorts" only made $6.6 million at the box-office debuting at No. 6.

"Shorts" tells the story of a magical wishing rock and how it creates chaos in one community. The film stars William H. Macy, James Spader, Jon Cryer, Leslie Mann, Jolie Vanier, Jimmy Bennet, and a lovably gross giant booger!

Movie Review: "Shorts"
Seen on: August 21, 2009

The players: Director: Robert Rodriguez, Writer: Robert Rodriguez, Cast: Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings, Devon Gearhart, Rebel Rodriguez, Leo Howard, Leslie Mann, William H. Macy, Jolie Vanier

Facts of interest: Robert Rodriguez also directed the "Spy Kids" films.

The plot: A small community slips into chaos when a bunch of kids find a magical rock that grants wishes to the one holding it.

Our thoughts: Robert Rodriguez returns to the family genre with “Shorts,” a goofy big-screen adventure I wouldn’t recommend to anyone but younger cinemagoers. The film is eccentric and colorful enough to entertain those with the same age as its main protagonists, but as far as I’m concerned, this one failed to win me over.

Actors:

Jimmy Bennett as Toe Thompson: Bennett has his very own gawky, awkward charm and it mostly works. He was fantastic as the young James T. Coming Soon on www.mannythemovieguy.com: Fun Interviews with the cast of "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" and "Shorts"
I had a terrific but very busy weekend! I saw two films "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard," and "Shorts." I also interviewed the cast and crew of both films.

First, let's talk about "Shorts." I will post my full review very soon, but one hint: magical wishing rock! And it's rainbow to boot! :happy

I talked to director Robert Rodriguez, who gave me nice nuggets about the upcoming "Machete," "Sin City 2," and "Predator" the reboot! I also interviewed James Spader, Jon Cryer, and the two main child-actors Jimmy Bennet and Jolie Vanier.

The bottomline? I had a blast talking to the "Shorts" folks, and if I'm a kid today? I will do anything to get that magical wishing rock! So yes, kids will enjoy the movie, oh, and watch out for that giant booger! No kidding!

And now, "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard." I Love This Film!

Trailer for Robert Rodriguez’s Shorts is Wacky, But Also Fun
The filmography of one Robert Rodriguez is all over the map for the most part. The common notion is that his most popular work as a director has come from Sin City and Desperado. And while those films have been very successful, his greatest success was with the Spy Kids trilogy -- each film grossing over $85 million dollars a piece. So it makes sense that Warner Bros. jumped all over the chance to finance Rodriguez's next family adventure, Shorts. It tells the story of a young boy (Jimmy Bennett) who discovers a colorful rock that allows him to simply make a wish and have it come true. So he uses this power to get some friends. Little does he know that these friends come in the form of miniature alien-like dudes who help him fight back against his schoolyard bully -- played by Jolie Vanier, who has a very Christina Ricci as Wednesday Adams look to her...
