Discovery creator Bryan Fuller wanted this actor for a Starfleet captain, and she would be perfect
Image
Bryan Fuller is the co-creator of Star Trek: Discovery and originally in charge of the casting. As I've previously written, he wanted Laurence Fishburne to play a Klingon on ther series and had some other differences in mind, too, like Paul Stamets [Anthony Rapp] being an Andorian.

Another actor he was reportedly in talks with to play a Starfleet captain was Gillian Anderson, better known as Dana Scully from The X-Files. [via Screenrant] An Emmy-Award winner, Anderson also portrayed Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal's psychotherapist on Hannibal, a series that was developed by Fuller. It seems he had an idea to bring most of the cast of Hannibal aboard Discovery.

Dave Benett/GettyImages

Honestly, though, having Anderson as a captain isn't a bad idea at all. She plays the perfect authoritative figure [see her role on The Crown as Margaret Thatcher] and, after having spent time on The X-Files which ran for eleven seasons,...

Why So Many Dune Characters Have Blue Eyes
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If there's one thing you need to understand about "Dune," it's that spice is a hell of a drug. The Spice Melange, a substance found only on the planet Arrakis, is a drug so powerful that the entire universe basically revolves around it. Spice can significantly improve someone's health, triple a person's life expectancy, and can give people the ability to predict possible futures.

That last part is the most vital since the humans in the "Dune" universe have long abandoned "thinking machines," so interstellar travel has to be done by humans steering the ship the whole time instead of advanced computers. That's an impossible task, unless the person is heavily dosed up on spice their whole life to the point where they're barely recognizable as human anymore. That's what happened to the Guild Navigators, the spice-addicted space pilots that...

One Star Trek: Discovery actor was going to play an Andorian instead of a human
Image
Prior to Bruce Horak's turn as an Andorian on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek had largely left the aliens behind after Star Trek: Enterprise's Shran, played by Jeffrey Combs. As it turns out, though. originally one Star Trek: Discovery character was going to be an Andorian. It was series creator Bryan Fuller's idea that got scrapped when he left the series in 2016 due to creative differences.

Anthony Rapp, who portrayed Lieutentant Paul Stamets on Discovery for the entirety of its five seasons, was originally cast as an Andorian. Fuller revealed the original plan for Rapp in an interview with The D-Con Chamber with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating [via Screenrant].

Either Fuller didn't know or didn't share why season one's showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts, who took over after he left, decided not to keep Stamets as an Andorian. It would have actually been interesting...

Star Trek: Discovery Could've Starred Two Sci-Fi Legends, If Showrunner Bryan Fuller Stuck Around
Image
The story of the making of "Star Trek: Discovery" is well-known to Trekkies with a smattering of inside-baseball knowledge. Bryan Fuller was asked to create a new "Star Trek" series by the higher-ups at CBS, and he was eager to do so. He loved "Star Trek," having written scripts for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager." He and Alex Kurtzman began assembling a new series, as CBS didn't yet have an idea of what they wanted. Fuller had a novel idea: a "Star Trek" anthology series. He envisioned a series of multiple 10-episode seasons, each one set at a different time within the future history of "Star Trek." The first season would take place shortly before the events of the original "Star Trek," the second would run concurrently with the original "Star Trek," the third during the age of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and so on,...

Stamets' Name In Star Trek: Discovery Explains The Real-Life Science Behind The Spore Drive
Image
Star Trek: Discovery's spore drive may be a work of science-fiction, but the name of Anthony Rapp's character reveals more thought has gone into the bizarre form of propulsion than it seems. Rapp's presence in the Star Trek: Discovery season 5 cast may very well have resulted in him playing Paul Stamets for the final time, although the franchise does have a long history of bringing characters back via time travel and other overused sci-fi TV tropes. That being said, his Star Trek return may not be necessary, Discovery ended pretty satisfyingly for the main cast.

Rapp played Commander Paul Stamets throughout all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, with his unique arc becoming one of the most compelling parts of the show from day one. The story behind Paul Stamets' name reveals a lot about where his journey was headed even before the first episode had aired.

After 7 Years, Star Trek Reveals the Mind-Blowing Secret of Discovery's Mycelial Network
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #25!

After seven years, Star Trek has finally revealed the awe-inspiring reach of Discoverys Mycelial Network. Introduced in Star Trek: Discoverys first season, the titular ship used the Network to traverse great distances, almost single-handedly winning a war in the process. Much is still not known about the Mycelial Network, but in Star Trek #25, the crew of the Theseus learn just how important it isand why it must be protected.

Star Trek #25 was written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Liana Kangas. The Theseus is traveling through Fluidic Space, when the crew make an interesting discovery: biological matter has attached itself to the ship. Analyzing it, Data learns it is a mycelium. Data then mentions the Mycelial Network, with Scotty explaining the basic premise behind it. The Network is rooted there, but it grows throughout all creation, making it the glue that...

Patrick Stewart is a Legend But Even He’ll Agree the 1 Clear Advantage Star Trek Discovery Actor Claimed No Other Show Has

Patrick Stewart became a global star when he played the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The spinoff show seemed to surpass its predecessor, the original series in terms of reach and even lasted seven seasons. However, Stewart’s show might have fallen behind in one aspect compared to its successors.

Actor Blu del Barrio’s character, Adira Tal in Star Trek Discovery, became the first non-binary character in the franchise. The show also portrayed the franchise’s first relationship between a non-binary character and a trans character. Del Barrio mentioned that Discovery was the most diverse version of Star Trek yet.

What Did Blu del Barrio’s Inclusion In Star Trek Discovery Mean For The Franchise? The cast of Star Trek: Discovery | Credits: Paramount

Hannibals 10 Most Disgustingly Artistic Murder Scenes
Image
In 1986, Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon introduced the world's classiest antihero: Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a sociopathic psychiatrist whose sophistication belies his savage sadism. Further books and popular screen adaptations fleshed out this cultivated killer, and in 2013, Bryan Fuller gave him his own show, Hannibal. The three-season series is a feast for the eyes worthy of its refined star, and this list explores its most gruesomely gorgeous crime scenes, along with the cultural references they carry.

As any fan knows, Hannibal Lecter is all about good taste: The erudite super-genius kills the crude and crass and improves their literal taste by transforming their remains into culinary masterpieces. His heightened senses correlate with extreme cultural sensitivity, and in Bryan Fuller's world, he is joined by other killers with similar aesthetic sensibilities. The following tableaus reflect the highest achievements in art history, science, religion, and more all carried out by deadly criminals.

What Happens To Every Star Trek Ship Paramount Plus Canceled
Image
The conclusion or cancelation of these Star Trek shows on Paramount+ puts an end to the onscreen voyages of several prominent starships. With the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, Paramount+ (then known as CBS All Access) brought Star Trek into the modern era of streaming television. Discovery may have been met with some mixed reviews from fans, but the show proved to be a resounding success, launching another golden era for the franchise. But all good things come to an end, and Paramount+ canceled Discovery in March of 2023, announcing the fifth season would be its last.

Star Trek: Picard was only meant to last for three seasons, though the final season left fans clamoring for a spin-off. This proposed spin-off, Star Trek: Legacy, took on a life of its own, but Paramount+ has been focusing on other Trek projects. In June 2023, Paramount+ canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, removing it completely from their streaming library.

Wilson Cruz On Star Trek: Discovery's Legacy & His Favorite Memories On Set
Image
Wilson Cruz starred as Dr. Hugh Culber for all 5 seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, and he made Star Trek history as part of the franchise's first gay couple with Anthony Rapp's Commander Paul Stamets. Star Trek: Discovery - The Final Season and Star Trek: Discovery - The Complete Series are available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Dr. Hugh Culber's Star Trek: Discovery story is epic. Culber actually died in Star Trek: Discovery season 1 but, after his resurrection in season 2, Culber grappled with the meaning of life. In later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, Culber embraced a new role as counselor to the USS Discovery's crew, developing even deeper relationships with the show's characters. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 challenged Wilson Cruz's acting chops even more, as Dr. Culber underwent a profound spiritual awakening.

Star Treks Next Show Can Have Data At Starfleet Academy (Without Brent Spiner)
Image
A Soong-type android like Fred could be a valuable addition to Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century. While Brent Spiner's Data may not appear in the new series, Fred could fill the void as a mentor or instructor. Star Trek fans are hopeful for Spiner to reprise Data in future spinoffs, but Fred offers a positronic spark for now.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could have its own version of Data, but could Brent Spiner's beloved android also appear in Star Trek's next series? Created by executive producers and co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reopens the school responsible for graduating Starfleet legends like Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Starfleet Academy is set in the 32nd century and picks up sometime after Star Trek: Discovery, which ended with season 5.

Wilson Cruz: Star Trek: Discoverys Doctor Culber Explained

Dr. Hugh Culber brought LGBTQ+ representation to Star Trek, becoming a father figure to queer teens. Culber's resilience and compassion make him a standout character, embodying non-toxic masculinity. Wilson Cruz's portrayal of Culber made a memorable impact, bringing depth and diversity to Star Trek.

On Star Trek: Discovery, Wilson Cruz plays Dr. Hugh Culber, one of the USS Discovery's medical doctors. Unlike earlier Star Trek series, which often focused on a single character as the series' Chief Medical Officer, Star Trek: Discovery season 1 gave equal weight to both Dr. Hugh Culber and Dr. Tracy Pollard (Raven Dauda). At any given moment, either Dr. Culber or Dr. Pollard might be in attendance in Discovery's sick bay. As Star Trek: Discovery went on, Hugh Culber became a standout character, exemplifying physical resilience, emotional wisdom, and ongoing curiosity, with a poignant character arc resolving science and spirituality.

Star Trek: Discovery's Blu Del Barrio Took An Adira Keepsake With Them From Set
Image
The character of Adira Tal (Blu Del Barrio) was introduced in "Star Trek: Discovery" in the episode "People of Earth". In that episode, the U.S.S. Discovery had only recently arrived in the 32nd century after being sucked through a time hole from the 23rd century. The Discovery crew eventually found the distant future remnants of the Federation, and submitted themselves for inspection, hoping to learn more about the future. They found that power had changed dramatically in the past 930 years, mostly thanks to a galaxy-wide cataclysm called the Burn wherein all viable starships spontaneously exploded. The Discovery and its crew were to undergo a brand-new mission to restore the Federation and assure the galaxy that Starfleet was still around and eager to return to its utopian ways.

While the Discovery was undergoing inspection by a militant future organization called the United Earth Defense Force, Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) met the 16-year-old Adira Tal,...

Star Trek Could Do Lots Of Musicals With These 10 Actors
Image
Star Trek has an impressive lineup of musical theater talent, from Strange New Worlds to Lower Decks. While many Star Trek actors have musical theater experience, few have had the opportunity to show off their singing skills in the franchise. The success of the musical episode in Strange New Worlds proves that the Star Trek writing staff can craft a Broadway-worthy musical.

After Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' first-ever musical episode, Star Trek has a perfect line-up of actors to incorporate more musical theater-like performances into its stories. Throughout Star Trek's long history, many of the franchise's stars have dabbled in creating music, including Willliam Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Still, musical theater is an entirely different ball game, requiring not only skills in singing but also in dancing and choreography. The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," proved that the Star Trek franchise can boldly go just about anywhere,...

7 Discovery Questions Star Treks Next Show Must Answer

I Love How Queerness In Star Trek Is Normalized
Image
Star Trek has made strides in LGBTQ+ representation, with more queer characters in recent years, including main characters like Adira Tal. By using allegories, Star Trek has explored queer themes since its inception, shedding light on the queer experience through metaphorical storytelling. The normalization of queerness in Star Trek is a celebration of human diversity in the modern present, showcasing organic relationships and diverse characters.

I love that queerness in Star Trek is normalized. It seems perfectly natural for Star Trek to include queer characters, but explicit on-screen LGBTQ+ representation has been surprisingly rare until recently. Star Trek's first same-sex kiss made franchise history in 1995, when Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) fell for Lenara Kahn (Susanna Thompson) in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 9, "Rejoined". Lt. Star Trek: Discovery's Blu Del Barrio Had Wishes For Adira That Never Came True

When "Star Trek: Discovery" signed off last month, it left a few character arcs hanging. That's because the show's cancellation wasn't announced until season 5 had already wrapped, leading to a season finale that was reworked into a series finale with the help of quick rewrites and some additional footage.

Luckily, several main characters still got their happy ending despite the Paramount+ bait-and-switch, and Blu del Barrio's ensign Adira Tal was one of them. Adira joined the Discovery crew as an orphan with a Trill symbiont for a boyfriend. By season 5's ending, Adira had come into their own as a member of the crew, found a family in the form of parent figures Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), and amicably ended things with their partner, Gray (Ian Alexander), after he was separated from them and placed into a body of his own.

Saru receives a surprise promotion to Admiral at his wedding in Star Trek: Discovery's series finale. Actor Doug Jones was confused by his character's promotion, remembering it was supposed to be Ambassador, not Admiral while filming. Admiral Charles Vance addresses Saru as Admiral instead of Ambassador during the wedding ceremony.

Ambassador Saru received one more promotion in Star Trek: Discovery's finale, which surprised Doug Jones. At the end of Star Trek: Discovery's season 5 and series finale, "Life, Itself", Saru marries his love, President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) of Ni'Var. Anthony Rapp Discusses the 'Star Trek: Discovery' Tooth Brush Scene & Its Impact on the Queer Trek Community
Image
Many IPs amass large fandoms but there's something particularly special about the fans of Star Trek. The franchise has been on the air since the mid-'60s with Star Trek: The Original Series and has since inspired numerous spin-off series and movies that traverse the stars, telling stories of hope and wonder. For a genre that so often deals in gloom and cautionary tales, Star Trek is an optimistic look at the future that holds space for all beings, no matter their differences. In Paramount+'s Star Trek: Discovery, the show made strides within the queer community specifically, highlighting characters like Wilson Cruz's Dr. Hugh Culber and Anthony Rapp's Paul Stamets, who in Season 1 were confirmed to be a gay couple.

Star Treks Next Series Must Explain Discoverys Spore Drive Replacement
Image
Star Trek: Discovery introduces the pathway drive as a new propulsion system to replace the spore drive. Captain Burnham and crew are close to obtaining powerful Progenitors' technology. Lt. Sylvia Tilly is the perfect character to explain the pathway drive in the new spin-off series.

Star Trek: Discovery has introduced the pathway drive as a propulsion system to replace the USS Discovery's spore drive, but Star Trek's next show will have to explain how the new technology works. As Discovery season 5 comes to a close, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew are close to acquiring the powerful technology of the Progenitors. Burnham and her friends have outsmarted the Breen before, but Moll (Eve Harlow) remains a force to be reckoned with. As the Progenitors were the supposed creators of all humanoid life, their technology should contain the power of creation itself.

Even before the titular ship traveled to the 32nd century,...

Is Book The Last Kwejian In Star Trek: Discovery?
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths"

Book is not the last Kwejian in Star Trek: Discovery, but one of the few surviving after Kwejian's destruction by the Dark Matter Anomaly. The World Root cuttings survived in the Eternal Gallery and Archive, potentially offering a chance to regrow Kwejian in the future. Book draws parallels to Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, as both are driven by vengeance for their lost homeworlds.

Is Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) the last Kwejian in Star Trek: Discovery? Kwejians are a new Star Trek species introduced by Star Trek: Discovery, and their absence in earlier Star Trek shows is explained by Kwejian first achieving warp capability in the 31st century. Some Kwejians, like Book, possess natural empathy, indicated by a glowing pattern that appears on their foreheads when activated. Empathy gives Kwejians the ability to connect with, understand, and sometimes even influence animals and plants.

Star Trek: Discoverys Spore Drive Replacement May Not Be Explained
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5!

The replacement for the spore drive, the pathway drive, may never be explained in the final episodes of Discovery season 5. The focus in the last three episodes should be on securing the Progenitors' treasure and defeating the Breen, not introducing new technology. Starfleet replaced the spore drive due to lack of navigators, leading to the development of the pathway drive.

Star Trek: Discovery teased an exciting new replacement for the spore drive, but with only three episodes left to go, this new technology may never be explained. Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive" revealed that Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) was mourning the closure of his spore drive program, abandoned in favor of an alternative warp drive replacement. The USS Voyager-j replaced Discovery's spore drive with the pathway drive, which it had been testing since Discovery's season 4 premiere. This created the possibility...

Stamets Has Tardigrade DNA? Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive Navigator Explained
Image
Commander Paul Stamets has tardigrade DNA thanks to combining his own genetics with a tardigrade named Ripper. Stamets' tardigrade DNA lets him navigate the USS Discovery through the mycelial network. Stamets invented the USS Discovery's spore drive, and he is unaffected by temporal disruptions thanks to his tardigrade DNA.

It's true: Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), the inventor of the spore drive on Star Trek: Discovery, has tardigrade DNA. Discovery's displacement-activated spore hub drive is a classified propulsion system unique to Star Trek: Discovery, and an alternative to the warp drive that's usually seen on Star Trek's starships. Rather than warping space-time to travel faster than light, the spore drive actively displaces the USS Discovery from normal space into another plane of existence, the mycelial plane. During a jump, or "black alert", Discovery travels along the mycelial network, an interconnected structure that branches through space-time organically.

Spore drives were...
