"It's the doctor! He's real!" Quiver Distr. recently released this indie horror film and it's already available to watch. Marshmallow is a horror film "for kids" about kids at summer camp encountering a scary doctor, made by the director / VFX artist Daniel DelPurgatorio as his first feature film. 12-year-old Morgan Kim is terrified of summer camp—especially the spooky campfire stories. But when a masked "doctor" figure from legend comes to life, he must conquer his fears, protect his friends, and uncover Camp Almar's dark secret before it’s too late. This group of young campers will uncover a profound secret that questions their very existence. Starring Kue Lawrence as Morgan, with Giorgia Whigham, Corbin Bernsen, Paul Soter, Pierson Fode, and a bunch of other camp kids. I'm glad someone is still trying to make horror movies that younger viewers can watch. The villain in this isn't the scariest thing out there,...

“Bad Man,” a new action comedy from Hemlock Circle Productions, has scored theatrical distribution this fall via Vertical.
The movie, starring Sean William Scott, Rob Riggle and Johnny Simmons “centers around Sam Evans (Simmons) as he tackles a meth epidemic, but is sidelined on arrival by Bobby Gaines (Scott), an undercover agent. Despite Evans local ties, Gaines is hailed as a hero until suspicions arise on Gaines which unravels a complex narrative.”
“’Bad Man’ is a gritty action comedy brought to life by a stellar cast that fits the mold of the edgy content we strive to create at Hemlock Circle Productions,” said producer Warner Davis in an official statement. “Our first film produced through Hemlock was with Vertical Entertainment, and we are thrilled to be reteaming again with them on the release of ‘Bad Man.’”

Daniel DelPurgatorio’s “Marshmallow” initially invites us into the well-trodden grounds of Camp Almar, a classic summer camp setting that feels almost like a tutorial level for a horror story. We meet young Morgan, portrayed with a palpable sense of vulnerability by Kue Lawrence.
He’s a kid already shouldering the weight of recent grief and a bundle of anxieties, making his arrival at camp feel less like an adventure and more like another trial.
The air is thick with the promise of spooky campfire tales, and you get the distinct feeling that one particular legend—about a sinister figure known only as “The Doctor”—isn’t going to stay confined to fireside whispers for very long. It’s a setup that knowingly winks at the audience, suggesting that while the path looks familiar, the journey might just veer off into uncharted territory.

Slashers and sleepover camps are the spaghetti and meatballs of horror cinema. Counselors told campfire legends even before Friday the 13th, their faces ghoulishly illuminated by a dim-wattage flashlight. Daniel DelPurgatorio's Marshmallow follows in the footsteps of every overnight retreat nightmare … until it doesn't. A film titled after the soft and squishy treats that bind s'mores evokes comfort, but quite impressively, after establishing normalcy as a ruse, DelPurgatorio pivots from sweet familiarity. It takes some patience to outlast the film's more mediocre beginnings, yet unlike other stories that paddle in place without going anywhere, Marshmallow lands a payoff you'll be buzzing about for a while.

If there is one thing Horror movies have taught me, it’s that summer camps are the safest places on Earth. Nothing bad has ever happened at a summer camp in Horror movies. And in keeping with the grand tradition of high security, murder-free summer camps filmmaker Daniel DelPurgatorio makes his feature debut with the genre-bending, kid-killing, (award-winning!) Marshmallow. Celebrating its World Premiere at Panic Fest 2025, where it also took home Best Feature and Best Director, Marshmallow is a choose-your-own-adventure style Horror flick that plays on your expectations and remixes the classic Spooky Summer Camp template in clever and unpredictable ways.
If you’ve seen a handful of movies in a specific subgenre, the worry about spending time on a new one is that you’ve been there, seen that. Marshmallow knows that you’ve seen Sleepaway Camp and The Burning and Friday The 13th, and cleverly plays into those...

Marshmallow, the upcoming horror film coming to theaters next month, just got an exciting new look. Collider is happy to partner with Hemlock Circle Productions to unveil a new sneak peek at Marshmallow, which shows Morgan (Kue Lawrence) coming into the cabin to warn Franklin (Maxwell Whittington-Cooper) and Rachel (Giorgia Whigham) that someone is inside his room. The two clearly don’t believe him, and then Lauri (Samantha Neyland Trumbo) and Kaszwar (Pierson Fode) stumble in and are accused of planting this story in his head. Marshmallow shows what happens when a once-fabled campfire tale becomes real, and a group of campers discovers something that forces them to question their very existence. The film is coming to select theaters on April 11, and it promises to be one of the more intriguing horror movies of the year.

One of my favorite types of movie to watch is the wilderness-set slasher movie, particularly summer camp slashers, with my favorite film franchise being Friday the 13th. Hemlock Circle Productions will be giving this film a theatrical release on April 11th, and the trailer can be seen in the embed above.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. For their 5th annual edition, the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival is heating up by returning to the summer after being a winter event for the past three years. The fest will run on Aug. 17-19 with a killer lineup of films from all over the world — most of which probably will not be able to be seen in Minnesota except at this 3-day event.
Plus, there are two programming blocks of short films all made by local filmmakers, including Pam Colby’s Fertile Ashes, Ryan Becken’s Buffalo Shampoo, Janelle Sorenson & Melany Joy Beck’s Bring It 2 Peter, Jl Sosa’s Some of Angela and more.
The feature films screening this year cover an extremely diverse swath of subject matter, from every day people’s murder fantasies fulfilled — cinematically, at least — in Michal Koskowski’s German documentary Zero Killed; a tattoo comes to live to torment its wearer in...

In the short horror film Other, we are introduced to Patrick (David Steiger), a brilliant doctor facing the unthinkable: a grim prognosis of incurable cancer that leaves him desperate and alone in his struggle to survive after the system he's been a part of no longer can help him.
While conducting a series of unconventional experiments, he discovers a scientific loophole unlike anything he had ever imagined, and in mad scientist-like pursuit, Patrick soon finds himself willing to risk everything to ensure he sees his experiment to the end...even if it means accepting the sinister results.
While in Austin for the 2012 SXSW Film Festival a few weeks back, Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with a trio of filmmakers behind Other - director Daniel DelPurgatorio, producer Larissa Shames and editor Matt Egan - who chatted with us about their short film, their plans for a feature film version...

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

A couple of weeks ago we gave you the heads up on an interesting new short film about a doctor's self-diagnosis and unorthodox treatment methods gone horribly awry entitled Other. We're now excited to bring you the official trailer for the film, and it just adds to the intrigue.
Other is directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio, best known for helming Tales of the Black Freighter, the companion piece for 2009's Watchmen, which featured the voice-over work of Gerard Butler. However, with Other DelPurgatorio takes a entirely new direction. Watching the trailer, I felt a strong essence of Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. Take a gander at the trailer below and see if it channels Brundlefly for you, too.
And for those of you in the Chicago area, you've got the jump on everyone. Other will be having its world premiere in Chi-Town on Thursday, December 15, at 7 pm at The Den Theater.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s influential graphic novel “Watchmen” may have not made the impact that we all expected it to in theaters, but it is a film and book that still has legions of fans. Fan of the book or the movie or both should take a look at the interesting “Tales of the Black Freighter,” a companion piece that fills in the world of “Watchmen” and is now available on Blu-Ray.

Whether you loved, hated or were ambivalent about Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (I loved it), you have to give the director credit for trying to be as faithful as possible to the source material. But given the limitations of making a movie from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ rich and complex graphic novel, there was no way he and his screenwriters could include everything.
Originally published as a series of 12 comics, Watchmen contains the pirate story-within-a-story Tales Of The Black Freighter as well as supplemental prose (letters, articles, etc.) penned by Moore that were placed at the end of each issue in lieu of advertisements. One of these was Under The Hood, Hollis Mason’s autobiography chronicling the formation of the Minutemen and his life before, during and after becoming the first Nite Owl. With a running time of 163 minutes, Watchmen would have had to go over the three-hour mark...
