Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be working on Scream 7 – but that project turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, reaching theatres on April 11th. Just over two weeks later, the movie got a digital release and is available on Prime Video at This Link. If you’re more interested in watching the movie on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, or DVD than you are in checking out the digital version, you’ll be glad to...

After hitting theaters earlier this month, Blumhouse's new thriller flick Drop will finally make its digital debut tomorrow, giving fans a second chance to experience the suspense and thrills from the comfort of their own home. Or, maybe you didn't get the chance to see it on the big screen. Now’s your opportunity to catch up on the chilling excitement you missed!
Starting April 29, Drop will be available for rent or purchase on digital platforms like Prime Video, Fandango at Home, Apple TV+, and more. You can currently pre-order the film on these sites for $24.99, excluding taxes. While the exact pricing for its digital release has yet to be confirmed, it's expected that the purchase price will be around $24.99, with rental options likely priced around $19.99. Director Christopher Landon returns with high-concept suspense thriller Drop, which cleverly combines the anxiety of a first date with the type of unseen assailant threat familiar from films like Phone Booth, Grand Piano and the more recent Carry On. As such, it’s hugely enjoyable, and the sort of movie where the ridiculous contrivance is a big part of the fun.
After a tense prologue, which isn’t explained until later and could either be a flashback or a flash-forward, Drop opens with single mother Violet nervously preparing for a first date, encouraged by her younger sister Jen (Violett Beane), who will be babysitting Violet’s 5 year-old son Toby (Jacob Robinson) for the evening. Already anxious because this is her first date since...

The new thriller from the former Scream 7 director Christopher Landon has failed to keep critics, and the audience frightened. The movie had its debut at the South by Southwest Festival early last month and received critical acclaim.
Drop debuted with a perfect score following its limited release. However, as the film celebrated its wide release on Apr. 11, Drop has lost its perfect score, and has also failed the impress the audiences. Following its theatrical release,Drop has received a Certified Fresh 83% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, a major drop from its rare, perfect score, and only a passable 73% from the audience.
Following the release of the film in theaters, Drop also received the Certified Fresh badge, which the thriller didn't have following its SXSW release. However, its score has continuously dropped.
The 83% approval score from the critics is more than exciting, and the critics praised the mystery and the tension of the thriller.

Director Christopher Landon has a proven track record for helming zippy fun horror, from the Happy Death Day films to Freaky to last year’s YA horror-lite We Have a Ghost. Landon’s latest, Drop, continues that streak while expanding his oeuvre with a more mature effort that leaves behind the teen slasher gimmicks. This first-date gone wrong thriller serves as the filmmaker’s propulsive, infectious tribute to Wes Craven’s Red Eye, resulting in a highly stylized dramatic thriller that’ll leave you fist-pumping to “Yahtzee!”
Drop opens with a harrowing scene of domestic abuse that not only earns instant rooting interest for heroine Violet (Meghann Fahy) but helps inform the choices she’ll make when faced with unthinkable pressure. Like, for example, her extreme nerves when embarking on her first date since her abusive ex passed. After gentle coaxing and help from her sister Jen (Violett Beane), who...

Christopher Landon is a master at making audiences vacillate between gut-wrenching terror and gut-busting laughter. That’s certainly true of the director’s latest film, “Drop,” which stars “White Lotus” alum Meghann Fahy as a single mother who’s tormented by threatening AirDrop messages while on a first date.
“I loved this idea of making a modern Hitchcock movie where we take this very known type of technology, and we see how it gets turned against us. This item of convenience becomes something else. I think everyone can relate to the idea of being harassed and abused by someone you can’t see,” Landon tells Variety.
With such a heavy plot, the director knew he needed to use the signature comedy fans have grown to expect after films like “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky,” but in a very different way. It starts with the AirDrop messages themselves — at first they feel like teenage pranks,...

Do you enjoy your date night movies with a side of thrills and drenched in fun-loving ambitions? That's Christopher Landon's romantic thriller Drop, about a dangerously awry first meetup. Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar star in the impromptu assassination plot over dinner, which feels 90s coded in its entertaining abandon. Writers Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach channel Wes Craven's Red Eye, Eugenio Mira's Grand Piano, and Joel Schumacher's Phone Booth. I had the pleasure of attending Drop's world premiere at this year's SXSW film festival, where it put a big ol' movie-loving smile on my face (here's the review to prove it).
A few short weeks later, I found myself in New Orleans at the Overlook Film Festival, eating po' boys and devouring horror movies. Drop brought the house down based on post-screening buzz—I didn't snag a ticket out of respect to other badge...

On June 11, 2018, it was announced that genre regular James Wan’s company Atomic Monster was teaming up with Amblin to produce a remake of the 1990 “nature run amok” horror film Arachnophobia – and almost exactly four years later, we heard that that Christopher Landon, director of Happy Death Day and Freaky, would be writing and directing the new take on Arachnophobia. Fourteen months after that, it was announced that Landon was set to direct Scream 7. But, as it turns out, Landon won’t be making either of those movies – and in a new interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed exactly why he stepped away from both projects.
As we all know, Scream 7 completely fell apart around Landon. At one time, it was expected that Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega would be the leads in this sequel as well. But then Barrera was fired from...

Over the years, horror juggernauts Blumhouse Productions have built a stable of creatives that they’ve been able to pull from to make their movies. So, what do they get when they team up director Christopher Landon with writers Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach (Fantasy Island and Truth or Dare)? They get their newest suspense flick, Drop.
Drop is about a young, widowed mother named Violet (Meghann Fahy from The White Lotus) who, in an effort to jumpstart her social life, makes a date on a dating app with a guy named Henry (Brandon Sklenar from 1923). The two meet at a romantic high-rise restaurant, and things seem to be going well. Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Universal Pictures releases “Drop” in theaters Friday, April 11.
It’s a good thing director Christopher Landon‘s exit from the “Scream” franchise cleared his schedule: The punchy if risible single-location thriller “Drop” delivers a far more pleasurable jolt than any I.P. could have. Here, “The Bold Type” and “The White Lotus” TV comedy breakout Meghann Fahy proves herself a terrific (and Hitchcock-shade-of-blonde) genre actress as a traumatized widow on the worst first date of her life. Luckily, that first date is in the soothing, handsome presence of Brandon Sklenar as a press photographer with baggage of his own.
Running a cool 90 minutes, “Drop” takes place almost entirely in a top-of-the-world kind of high-rise restaurant in Chicago, where Violet (Fahy) is meeting Henry (Sklenar) off a Tinder-like app, and where this appears to be Violet...

What begins as an ordinary first date quickly descends into chaos in Drop, the new high-concept thriller from Christopher Landon, whose gift for genre-blending was previously on full display in Happy Death Day and Freaky. Set entirely over the course of one harrowing night, the film sees White Lotus star Meghann Fahy thrust into a waking nightmare driven by a series of mysterious, increasingly dangerous phone messages.
Fahy plays Violet, a widowed mother cautiously stepping back into the world of dating after years of grieving. Her nerves are eased when she meets Henry, played by Brandon Sklenar (It Ends with Us), whose charm and easy manner appear to offer a spark of new beginnings. But things sour fast. Violet’s phone begins to ping with anonymous messages and cruelly tailored memes – personal jabs that quickly shift from irritating to deeply menacing.
What begins as psychological manipulation escalates to full-blown terror.

Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, and is aiming for an April 11th theatrical release. With that date swiftly approaching, a new trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Director Christopher Landon describes Drop as “suspenseful and exciting and emotional” in the new featurette below.
“The movie is like a roller coaster,” the filmmaker explains. “It’s this very gradual ascent up the ramp, and then once you get to the top, you hit that drop.”
Produced by Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the horror-thriller drops into theaters on April 11 from Universal.
Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) star as a couple on a blind first-date whose romantic dinner spirals into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in which everyone’s a suspect.

If you think you’ve had a bad first date, Christopher Landon‘s “Drop” is here to take your worst nightmare and multiply it by a thousand. It also adds a measured yet sincere performance from Meghann Fahy as a woman who finds herself being threatened over airdrop (a function where a nearby stranger can connect to your phone to share images and texts) with messages telling her that she must kill her date or her son dies. This combination is one that provides all the pieces you need for what should be a taut little thriller that gets you in and out in just over 90 minutes.
Unfortunately, missing from the film’s equation is the earned tension to make this confined though haphazardly executed premise (which essentially asks “What if we remade 2002’s “Phone Booth” with smartphones?”) fully work. While Landon has made fun genre outings before with “Happy Death Day,...

Goofy, high-concept horror efforts succeed or fail based on more than just the talent involved or their dedication to the bit. Christopher Landon, as evidenced by genre mashups like Happy Death Day, Freaky, and Heart Eyes, understands that when the stakes are sky high, the emotions need to be firmly grounded. This is especially apropos for Drop, a high-rise-set, single-location thriller that delivers its shocks liberally mixed with the easy humor and unpretentious emotionality that’s become the filmmaker’s stock in trade.
Violet (Meghann Fahy) is a thirtysomething widow and single mom still haunted by the violent death of her abusive husband. Between working as a therapist for women in similar situations and providing for her young son, Toby (Jacob Robinson), she has little time for romance. The art of the "crowd pleaser" is alive and well in Christopher Landon's noose-tight Drop. Writers Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach pen a clever blend of technological paranoia and first-date anxieties in a one-location pressure cooker. The vibe is deliciously tense: think Grand Piano or Red Eye. Alfred Hitchcock is smiling on Down, and with good reason—it's tight, intense, and pure popcorn entertainment. Landon's latest is why we go to the movies: adrenaline-fueled escapism.
Meghann Fahy stars as Violet, a single Chicagoian mother with a traumatic past. After chatting with Brandon Sklenar's bachelor (Henry) via a dating app for a few months, she finally agrees to an in-person date. After some wardrobe advice from "Auntie" Jen (Violett Beane), she's ready to leave her son Toby (Jacob Robinson) and heads to Palate—a swanky 38th-floor fine dining establishment. A silly, pulpy mystery entirely sure of its own conceit, “Drop” combines tech paranoia and the looming specter of abuse to create something surprisingly taut and entertaining. Directed by Christopher Landon — best known for his involvement in the “Happy Death Day” and “Paranormal Activity” movies — the film’s complicated setups are executed with a deft and capable hand. Although set in a fine dining establishment, it’s a junk-food thriller fried to near-perfection, balancing the tensions of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder with those of a nerve-wracking first date. It’s crisp and delicious.
After a hair-raising prologue involving a couple pointing guns at one another (a scene whose purpose clicks into place much later), “Drop” gently introduces its protagonist, widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy), as she prepares for her first date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar), a handsome photographer she’s been speaking to online. Technology and trauma come together once again for Christopher Landon’s latest Blumhouse thriller Drop, a fun and satisfying ride through a first date from hell.
Years after the traumatizing death of her husband, widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy) is ready to put herself back out there, accepting a first date with the charming Henry (Brandon Sklenar) after three months of online flirtations. But their romantic evening takes a nightmarish turn when Violet begins receiving anonymous drops on her phone with nefarious memes and instructions, while her son is held hostage at home.
With Landon’s visually striking Hitchcock-ian direction, screenwriters Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach provide a fun tech-driven update on the urban legend that spawned 1979’s When a Stranger Calls (and its fun 2006 remake) as the drops come from inside the house.
Admittedly, the big reveal was mildly predictable after an ensemble of early red herrings, but...

Dating can be a chore — but for Meghann Fahy’s single-mother character in the upcoming Blumhouse thriller “Drop,” it can also quickly turn into a deadly game of iPhone cat and mouse.
Directed and co-written (with Jillian Jacobs) by Christopher Landon (“Happy Death Day”), the movie stars Fahy as a woman on a chic first date who is just starting to hit it off with the handsome man across the table from her when her phone begins buzzing with notifications. Someone in the restaurant is Airdropping messages to her… messages that become increasingly personal and threatening when they include photos of her son. The rules to saving her boy are simple: She can’t tell anyone what’s going on… and she has to kill her date.
If anyone can accomplish a lot with just facial expressions, though, it might be Fahy, who scored an Emmy nomination for her work...

Blumhouse kicked off its 2025 horror lineup with Wolf Man in January. Next, the psychological horror film The Woman in the Yard will be released in March, followed by the upcoming horror thriller Drop in April. To build excitement for Drop's release, Blumhouse just released the gripping official trailer for the film. We shared it above.
If you got the chance to see Wolf Man in theaters, you likely caught the trailer for Drop. Moviegoers were treated to a chilling glimpse of the upcoming horror thriller during the previews. Now, everyone has the opportunity to see the full trailer online. After watching the 2-minute and 41-second trailer, I have so many thoughts. What I will say is that this movie will make you rethink whether dating is worth the risk, especially if a simple date could put you in grave danger.
