At times, watching Youth in Revolt is nearly as awkward as adolescence itself. There's such promise in the source material (C.D. Payne's hilarious novel), the filmmaker (The Good Girl's Miguel Arteta) and the cast (Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Fred Willard, to name a few), so it's disappointing when it doesn't live up to its potential. Plus, like some other adolescent, umm, experiences, Youth in Revolt peaks too early, leaving the audience bored and unsatisfied once it passes its halfway mark.

However, its first 45 minutes represent some of the best teen comedy in years. There's a verve and anarchic spirit rarely present in PG-13 films that are aimed at the pre-college set, giving Youth in Revolt more of an edge than its peers. It deserves its MPAA-given R-rating, and not just for its language (filthy) and sense of humor (raunchy), but for the fact that it...

As every nice guy knows, girls have an inexplicable thing for bad boys. Which is bad news for Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), who unfortunately couldn't be nicer. Nick is 16 years old and a budding sophisticate whose tastes — shared by no one in his circle of pathetic acquaintances — run to Frank Sinatra records and old Fellini movies. He's also a virgin whose knowledge of sex consists entirely of rumor. He longs to score, ideally with a girl whose tastes run to Frank Sinatra records and old Fellini movies ... or something, you know, similar.

But there's no one like that in sight, or maybe even in existence. And meanwhile, everyone around Nick seems to be scoring like mad, even his divorced parents. His mom (Jean Smart), with whom he lives, is currently filling the vacancy in her love life with...

Youth in Revolt, which is based on a novel by C.D. Payne, is a teenage rebellion film that comes across like Fight Club for young hipsters. Even though the film sometimes tries a bit too hard to be edgy, Youth in Revolt is a funny, dirty, and stylish comedy.

Michael Cera plays Nick Twist is a precocious 16 year old nerd with raging hormones and none of the moves necessary to get next to a lady. When he isn't thinking about sex or masturbating, Nick channels his remaining energy into writing, reading, listening to Frank Sinatra, and watching arthouse films. Nick's parents (Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart) are divorced, and he stays with his mother so she can continue to get child support checks. While on vacation with his mom and her boyfriend (Zach Galifanakis), Nick encounters the pretentious girl of his dreams: Shennie Sanders (Portia Doubleday). Shennie is obsessed with French culture.

Youth in Revolt had the funny trailer and a beginning that teased a full 90 minutes of hilarity.  Then about halfway through, it drops at record-breaking speed.  It was so obvious that the flick lost its groove for people in the theater forced themselves to laugh just to stay with it.  Out of nowhere, the third act hits and the laughter comes back.  Saying this was an offbeat comedy is probably the best way to describe it.

Being misled by trailers is something everyone must deal with it.  Especially in the first few months of a new year, when studios release their "suspect" movies.  Youth in Revolt gives what it promises, just not the right dosage.  Treading in being labeled the year's first flop, somehow it managed to salvage some dignity.

Photo: Dimension Films Back on December 3, 2009 Michael Cera was making the press rounds and stopped over in sunny Seattle, Washington capping off a year in which I limited my interviews to the likes of Francis Ford Coppola for Tetro, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker and Marc Webb for 500 Days of Summer. I know, not exactly an abundance of interviews, but what can I say? I'm very picky.

However, as a fan of "Arrested Development" and the shy comedic stylings of Cera I couldn't pass up the opportunity. After all, his new film, Youth in Revolt is quite funny and well worth promoting.

Canadian actor Michael Cera made his first major impact on American comedy audiences with his role as teenager George Michael Bluth on the cult TV comedy Arrested Development. Since then, he has gone on to memorable roles in such films as Year One, Superbad and Juno, each time bringing his unique brand of comedy to his performance. In his latest film, Youth in Revolt, he takes on two characters, aspiring novelist and nice guy Nick Twisp, and man of action Francois Dilinger.

Along with talking about the experience of playing a dual role at the film’s press day, Michael Cera also previewed what it was like for him to play an action hero in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and updated the status of the Arrested Development feature film. When I was a young lad my best friend, frustrated in love, would complain to me: "Hey, Harvey, how come the great-looking girls looked right past nice guys like me and always go for the bad guys-the black leather-jacket crowd with duck's-ass hair styles that work in gas stations and auto repair shops and act like they don't give much of a damn about them?" I answered with what was a cliché, even in my own youth: "Don't worry. They look to guys like us to marry because they know we're nice and would make great fathers. Sooner or later, they'll come around."

Michael Cera is set to star in the upcoming feature film adaptation of C.D. Payne's novel, "Youth in Revolt." The former "Arrested Development" star and a slew of notable actors will be conquering theaters on October 30.

In the film, Cera plays 16-year-old Nick Twisp, a cynical sex-obsessed teenager who meets intellectual Sheeni Saunders while on a vacation in a trailer park. He gets himself in several incidences, including going undercover to hide from the FBI and disappearing to India, to gain Sheeni's approval, while she does almost anything to make his attempts fail.

Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart play Nick's temperamental divorced parents, and Portia Doubleday plays Nick's crush, Sheeni.

Also starring in the film are Ray Liotta, Justin Long, Jonathan B. Wright, Ari Gaynor, Rooney Mara, Fred Willard, and Zach Galifianakis.
