Animated In Annecy

Power of the craft: There’s no better way to remind yourself of the power of animation than to head to Annecy in June. The beautiful French city was transformed for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which has over the years taken on a Comic-Con-esque skew towards fandoms. With Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Bojack Horseman’s Raphael Bob-Waksberg and the likes of Bob’s Burgers director Tyree Dillihay in town, that’s no wonder. The vibe was phenomenal, and the hot, sunny weather, which positively shimmered across Lake Annecy, didn’t exactly hinder things. In the spotlight were a ream of big-budget upcoming projects including The Cat in the Hat, Bad Guys 2, Goat and Fixed, along...

Annecy: Sony’s ‘Goat’ Promises Animal-Filled Basketball Mayhem
Image
Sony Pictures Animation’s next theatrical feature “Goat,” is set in a world full of anthropomorphic animals in which the main character (Caleb McLaughlin), an actual goat, dreams of becoming a sports sensation. Yes, that title is pun on the acronym for Greatest Of All Time.

Sony premiered a first look at the film, produced in partnership with the NBA, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with director Tyree Dillihay and producer Michelle Raimo Kouyate on hand to explain the world of the film and to share some scenes.

The movie opens on February 13, 2026, timed with the NBA All-Star Game happening in Los Angeles that same weekend.

Dillihay, making his feature debut, said that the movie would center around roar-ball, a sport that is dominated by big animals, with courts as big as soccer fields. (Roar stands for Regionally Organized Animal Roundball.) In this world, small animals aren’t...

Sony Brings Darren Aronofsky to Las Vegas to Debut Trailer of Austin Butler-Starrer ’Caught Stealing’
Image
The Colosseum stage inside Caesars Palace caught some star power courtesy of a new trailer featuring Austin Butler in Caught Stealing during Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon on Monday.

The studio used the occasion to debut the first look at Darren Aronofsky’s film, which is set to hit theaters on Aug. 29 from Sony label Columbia Pictures. Aronofsky directed Caught Stealing from a script by Charlie Huston, who wrote the books on which the movie is based. The film casts Butler as Hank Thompson, a former baseball player, who is unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s New York City.

Aronofsky himself hit the stage in what marked his first CinemaCon appearance. “I was trying to figure out why no studio had never invited me before. I think the answer is kind of obvious,” the auteur joked. “Sony brought me because there...

Every Studio Film Directed by Filmmakers of Color Coming Out in 2025 and 2026
Image
While it is safe to say that the film industry has survived to 2025, one of the greatest casualties of the Hollywood strikes of 2023 has been the entertainment industry’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The continued push into Hollywood consolidation inevitably leads to debt, which leads to developmental programs and jobs being cut. Warner Bros. Discovery and the Paramount/Skybound merger are only the most recent examples of this.

But one could argue there is also a growing sentiment that media CEOs are simply no longer interested or invested in putting more effort into diversity. Consider it a backlash to the backlashes of 2016 and 2020, the very ones that focused on pushing Hollywood to empower more filmmakers who are women and/or people of color. While the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study does not quite show a decline in inclusion, it does reveal that the progress in finding, elevating,...

This Minor Bobs Burgers Character Has the Saddest Backstory in the Show
Image
When Bob's Burgers first hit screens in 2011, it was clear that the show wanted to do something different. While its competitors, like Family Guy and The Simpsons, wanted to show a more bleak side of family life, Bob's Burgers charmed its audience with its adorable domestics. The Belcher family is built on love, and that's what makes them one of the best-animated tribes on television.

Yet, not every character is as cheerful as the Belchers. Some characters act as contrasts to the family, proving to the audience that sadness and injustice still reside in this colorful fictional world. Regular Sized Rudy may seem like an ordinary fourth grader, but hidden beneath the surface is a very sad little boy who still has the ability to tug on the viewers' heartstrings.

Rudys Family Troubles Isolate Him From Others

Rudy makes his first appearance on the show in Season 3, Episode 22, "Carpe Museum,...

Halfway Mark: The Best TV Episodes of 2014 (So Far), Part 2
Girls, “Two Plane Rides”

Written by Lena Dunham

Directed by Lena Dunham

Aired March 23rd, 2014

Do you remember how last season’s Girls run ended? Well this season things culminated in an entirely different tone. This time, there were no grand gestures or fireworks. Season three isn’t quite as dark as season two, but man is the finale rough. If the season two finale frustrated fans because it suggested that Hannah might be too dependent on the man in her life, the season three finale seems intent on underlining that Hannah’s ready to move on, with or without Adam. And she isn’t the only one moving on, but she seems to be the only one moving in the right direction: Hannah gets into the country’s best grad school, Adam gives a truly “bad” performance in his Broadway debut, Marnie finds herself in another destructive relationship, Shosh...

Animated Obama Needs his Nicotine Fix, or Else
When weathering a political climate of hate, one coping mechanism is satire. Animators Wayne Stamps, David Corbett, and Tyree Dillihay employ this technique well. B-Rock: The First Term is a new web series featuring our Commander in Chief as a chain-smoking smooth talker with William Shatner's cadence who turns into a hulking mass of muscle when he doesn't get his Cool nicotine fix. All the hyperbolic trappings of cartooned political commentary are present, including an emaciated Ann Coulter making ludicrous claims about the President's past, a Barack Obama who's good with the ladies and soft on criminals, and a Rahm Emanuel who yells a lot of expletives. The series is like Current's SuperNews with a focus on the White House. Stamps created B-Rock and Stamps, Corbett, and Dillihay are all on board as executive producers. Aaron Simpson at Cold Hard Flash reports the trio have completed 12 episodes of the series.
