Orphan Black: Echoes Showrunner Explains Tatiana Maslany's Absence
Image
Fans of Orphan Black may have been expecting to see a special cameo from star Tatiana Maslany in the follow-up series, Orphan Black: Echoes. Ultimately, Maslany did not appear, but her absence was not for a lack of trying.

Per TVLine, Orphan Black: Echoes showrunner Anna Fishko commented on the lack of Maslany cameos in the new series. Fishko confirmed that Maslany was asked to return as a Leda clone in Echoes, and it would have been more substantial than a brief cameo. It was revealed that there were plans to be featured heavily in one episode toward the end of the season, but scheduling conflicts stood in the way of making that happen. If the series gets renewed by AMC, however, Fishko teased that Maslany could still end up coming back in the potential second season.

‘Beast Within’ DVD Review

Stars: Colm Feore, Steven Morana, Holly Deveaux, Ari Millen, Art Hindle, Bobbie Phillips, Melissa D’Agostino, Marco Timpano, Mark Andrade, Nicole Stamp, Jon Cor, Supinder Wraich | Written by Matthew Campagna, Rudy Jahchan | Directed by Chris Green, Steven Morana

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Beast Within from its US digital release last year]

Essentially a horror version of Knives Out (or the many Agatha Christie films which inspired it) and filmed on a low-budget, of course, Beast Within is a whodunit creature feature which stars Steven Morana (Whiskey Business) and Holly Deveaux (The Mist) as a couple attending the launch party of their gaming app Werewolves Awaken. But when a guest is mysteriously found dead, they question who could be the killer, as everyone becomes a suspect and player in a deadly real-life version of the game.

For a low-budget genre film, Beast Within has some truly fantastic effects work – from the over the top violence, blood...

‘The Oak Room’ DVD Review

Stars: Rj Mitte, Peter Outerbridge, Ari Millen, Nicholas Campbell, Martin Roach, David Ferry, Amos Crawley, Avery Esteves, Coal Campbell | Written by Peter Genoway | Directed by Cody Calahan

[Note: With the film out now on DVD and Digital here’s a reposting of our review of the excellent horror The Oak Room from its screening at last years Fantasia Festival]

I was a huge (and I do mean huge) fan of Cody Calahan’s 2013 debut feature Antisocial and its 2015 follow-up, so I was super-excited to see The Oak Room, the latest directorial effort from Calahan and the Canadian genre filmmaking outfit Black Fawn Films – a company who, in my opinion, have produced some of the best genre films in recent years, giving the much more well-known Blumhouse Productions a run for their money when it comes to low-budget horror filmmaking; and The Oak Room is their best yet.

On a snowy night in a small Canadian town, Paul (Peter Outerbridge) has just closed up his bar when a young man named Steve...

Grimmfest May Madness: ‘Vicious Fun’ Review
Image
Stars: Evan Marsh, Amber Goldfarb, Ari Millen, Julian Richings, Robert Maillet, David Koechner, Alexa Rose Steele | Written by Cody Calahan, James Villeneuve | Directed by Cody Calahan

Grimmfest keep on delivering the goods despite a worldwide pandemic. Their latest treat comes along with the May Bank Holiday and includes Cody Calahan’s latest movie Vicious Fun.

Set in the eighties, the crazy story has us follow a horror movie journalist (instantly relatable to a big chunk of this films audience!) who somehow ends up in a self-help group for serial killers. When his attempts at blending in don’t go to plan he has to work out a way to survive… I’m glad the word fun is in the title of this movie. It is often something that people seem to think is a less than positive way of describing films. But I love films that are fun and it is a perfect description here.

RJ Mitte and Justin Reu in The Oak Room (2020)
Another Trailer for Storytelling Thriller 'The Oak Room' from Canada
RJ Mitte and Justin Reu in The Oak Room (2020)
"I've got something better than cash... I've got a story." Gravitas Ventures has debuted another new US trailer for a Canadian indie "sinister thriller" titled The Oak Room. This first premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year (Zofia reviewed it from that festival here) and also stopped by the Telluride Horror Show. During a raging snowstorm, a drifter (Rj Mitte) offers to settle a debt with a grizzled bartender by telling him a story. But the evening's events quickly spiral into a dark tale of deceit, mistaken identity and shocking violence. A film about storytelling and how stories intertwine. Also starring Peter Outerbridge, Nicholas Campbell, Martin Roach, David Ferry, and Ari Millen. These trailers don't seem to sell the film that well, but all the reviews are saying it's quite good. Image
Stars: Evan Marsh, Amber Goldfarb, Ari Millen, Julian Richings, Robert Maillet, David Koechner, Alexa Rose Steele | Written by Cody Calahan, James Villeneuve | Directed by Cody Calahan

Sometimes there are films whose titles Literally tell you what to expect from a movie. Vicious Fun is one such film…There’s a whole lot of vicious things going down in the film – in particular to the gaggle of serial killing villains in the movie – and it’s also a whole lot of fun. A Lot of fun!

The latest film from Black Fawn Films, who are keeping the Canuxploitation tradition of genre cinema alive, Vicious Fun comes from director Cody Calahan who – if you’ve been reading Nerdly for quite some time – was responsible from not only one of my favourite Black Fawn films, not only one of my favourite Canadian genre films but also one of my favourite horror films full stop,...

Fantasia 2020: ‘The Oak Room’ Review
Image
Stars: Rj Mitte, Peter Outerbridge, Ari Millen, Nicholas Campbell, Martin Roach, David Ferry, Amos Crawley, Avery Esteves, Coal Campbell | Written by Peter Genoway | Directed by Cody Calahan

I was a huge (and I do mean huge) fan of Cody Calahan’s 2013 debut feature Antisocial and its 2015 follow-up, so I was super-excited to see The Oak Room, the latest directorial effort from Calahan and the Canadian genre filmmaking outfit Black Fawn Films – a company who, in my opinion, have produced some of the best genre films in recent years, giving the much more well-known Blumhouse Productions a run fo their money when it comes to low-budget horror filmmaking; and The Oak Room is their best yet.

On a snowy night in a small Canadian town, Paul (Peter Outerbridge) has just closed up his bar when a young man named Steve (Rj Mitte) walks in the door – carrying a lot of baggage.

Fantasia '20: Everyone Has a Dark Tale to Tell in The Oak Room: A Film Review
Nicholas Campbell in Republic of Doyle (2010)
*full disclosure: online access to the Fantasia Film Festival was provided by the fine staff from the event. Director: Cody Calahan. Writer: Peter Genoway. Cast: Coal Campbell, Nicholas Campbell, Amos Crawley, Avery Esteves, David Ferry, Ari Millen, Rj Mitte, Peter Outerbridge and Martin Roach. The Oak Room is a co-production between Black Fawn Films and Citizen Skull Productions. Together, these two companies have assembled a great team of filmmakers, including: director Cody Calahan (Antisocial) and Peter Genoway. The Oak Room's screenplay was developed by Genoway, who also created the original play, from 2013. This film recently had an appearance at Cannes, before having its public World Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. This title is very layered and the story develops much like a Russian doll, in which there are smaller dolls or stories within each larger doll. Two stories converge thanks to one character. And, this is a small film with a decent payoff.

RJ Mitte and Justin Reu in The Oak Room (2020)
Fantasia Review: The Oak Room Finds Rj Mitte in Labyrinth of Possibilities
RJ Mitte and Justin Reu in The Oak Room (2020)
It starts with a bottle of beer hitting a bar before an off-screen fight gets that glass bouncing along to the impact of bodies we never see. And it finishes with a similar still life that may or may not be the exact same beverage—a question left in limbo considering bottles are hitting bars past closing time throughout the entirety of director Cody Calahan and screenwriter Peter Genoway’s film The Oak Room. There are a lot of these almost cyclical moments during its brisk, dialogue-heavy ninety-minutes: drifters coming down the steps to greet a bartender hoping to go home, blizzard snow climbing windows, and the desire to tell stories with calculated meaning whether or not the teller or the listener knows as much once the words begin.

Along with those purposeful truths, however, come purposeful distractions. Bloodied hands presume foul play. Unopened bags carry the potential for dual identities.

David Koechner at an event for Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)
Turner Latin America’s new English-language film label Particular Crowd has kicked off its partnership with Canadian shingles Breakthrough Entertainment and Black Fawn Films with horror-comedy “Vicious Fun,” now in post.

“An outrageous mash-up of dread and humor, ‘Vicious Fun’ lives up to its title,” said Craig McGillivray, Breakthrough Entertainment’s VP of distribution. “We are thrilled to have Turner Latin America’s new movie banner, Particular Crowd, as a partner on this film, and look forward to sharing the howls and horrors we’ve created together,” he added.

“Vicious Fun” tracks Joel, a mordant 1980s film critic for a national horror magazine, who finds himself ensnared in a self-help group for serial killers. To avoid becoming the next victim, Joel tries to blend in with the murderous pack.

Shot in Hamilton, Ontario, “Vicious Fun” is directed by Cody Calahan and produced by Chad Archibald and Calahan. The cast led...

I'll Take Your Dead Has One Ghost Too Many: A Film Review
Director: Chad Archibald. Writer: Jayme Laforest. Cast: Aidan Devine, Ava Preston, Jess Salgueiro, Michael Reventar and Ari Millen. I'll Take Your Dead is the latest horror film from director Chad Archibald and his production house Black Fawn Films. Also developed by Breakthrough Entertainment and writer Jayme Laforest, I'll Take Your Dead could only have been shot in the snowy climes of Ontario. One part gangster thriller and one part ghost story, I'll Take Your Dead begins with a father - trying to protect his daughter. His work of choice is dissolving bodies, for the local gangbangers. Not much later, Act II slows the film's plot development, while supernatural elements waver in and out of the film. Overall, I'll Take Your Dead is a decent thriller, which requires a bit of patience. The ghost story elements begin with a robbery. But, what are the rules for ghosts entering or exiting scenes and being seen?...

Aidan Devine in Official Trailer for Creepy Horror 'I'll Take Your Dead'
"She's seen so much death here..." Scream Factory has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror thriller I'll Take Your Dead, the latest film from Canadian horror filmmaker Chad Archibald. This originally premiered at two Canadian film festivals last year - Calgary and Toronto After Dark - and is getting a limited release in May. But this woman isn't actually dead, and so patches and locks her up until he can figure out what to do. The two begin to develop a very unusual respect for each other, but the killers come back to finish the job. Aidan Devine stars, with Ava Preston, Jess Salgueiro, Brandon McKnight, and Ari Millen. Looks like this has some creepy twists and turns. Here's the official trailer...

New ‘Orphan Black’ Series In Works At AMC
Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black (2013)
Good news for fans of Orphan Black. A new Orphan Black series is in early development at AMC, Deadline has learned.

Temple St. Productions, which produced the original series, is on board to produce the series, which we hear is not a reboot or spinoff, but will be a new story set in the Orphan Black universe.

Orphan Black, which helped put BBC America on the original scripted series map as its first homegrown hit, aired for five seasons. It starred Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany as multiple clones in the Peabody Award-winning series that all started on a train platform. A troubled woman, Beth Childs (Maslany), locked eyes with an unknown identical woman, Sarah Manning (Maslany), before jumping to her death. From that day on, they were inextricably linked to a clone conspiracy that came to rule Sarah’s life. The cast also included Ari Millen, Jordan Gavaris, Maria Doyle Kennedy,...
