This week kicks off with four brand new horror movies at home, including a Hellraiser-inspired film starring horror legend Doug Bradley as well as new werewolf and scarecrow flicks.

The next movie in the killer scarecrow subgenre is Deescalated Pictures’ indie horror film Field of Screams, and Gravitas Ventures has released it on VOD at home today.

If lycanthropy is a virus, can it be cured? That’s the premise behind writer/director Peter McLeod’s indie First Moon, which looks to mix the werewolf and exorcism subgenres.

Several Norwegian formats have hit the international market at around the same time. That’s partly happenstance, but also because broadcasters in Norway kept ordering new shows while others in Europe applied the brakes. That ensured a healthy pipeline of new projects, several of which are breaking cover now. “We never stopped, we heard about other broadcasters freezing commissioning and we just decided we had to stay in the game,” one Norwegian commissioner tells Deadline.

I may not have been a fan of Terrifier 2 (my review is Here), but I was impressed by the work Lauren Lavera did in the lead role, and by the time the end credits started to roll I was convinced that she is a star on the rise. So I’m glad to see that she has already completed work on another genre movie – one that co-stars the great Bill Moseley! The movie is called The Fetus, and our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a batch of first look images that can also be seen at the bottom of this article.

On Wednesday, July 27th, the newest version of the Midnight Society brought their spooky campfire stories to California as the cast and crew of Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island joined guests at The London West Hollywood for a special advance screening of the latest season premiere in Nickelodeon's revival of the beloved ’90s TV series.

Are you Afraid of the Dark? is gearing up for its third season. Nickelodeon has announced the renewal of the mystery series revival just as production has begun on new episodes. Starring Telci Huynh, Conor Sherry, Luca Padovan, Dior Goodjohn, Chance Hurstfield, and Julian Curtis the new season revolves around a group of kids trying to solve a mystery during their summer vacation to an island resort. Four episodes are planned for the new season dubbed "Ghost Island."

Nickelodeon is bringing back Middlemost Post and Are You Afraid of the Dark for second and third seasons, respectively. It also renewed the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast for a second go-around.

Middlemost Post is an animated show that launched in 2021 from John Trabbic III and follows three characters — Parker, Angus and Russell — who deliver mail to the denizens of Mount Middlemost. The second season will feature 13 episodes.

The third season of the horror anthology Are You Afraid of the Dark is dubbed Ghost Island and will follow new characters who think they are attending a “fun” vacation on a resort island. The new members include Kayla; Max; Leo; Summer; and Ferris. Julian Curtis (Wish Man) also stars as Stanley Crane, the hotel manager at the island resort.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Ghost Island has begun production in the Dominican Republic and will bow later this year on Nickelodeon. It’s from Ace Entertainment.

Season 2 of Avatar: Braving the Elements, which is the official companion podcast to Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, will feature 40 episodes. Hosts Janet Varney (the voice of Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice of Prince Zuko) will continue binging both series. Avatar: Braving the Elements is produced in partnership with iHeartRadio.

Exclusive: Kinetic Content, the Red Arrow Studios company behind Lifetime’s hit Married At First Sight, has picked up the U.S. rights to a buzzy Belgium comedy format that confronts social taboos.

Created by Belgium-based Panenka and made by Dutch production outfit Lineup Industries, Taboo sees a comedian spend time with people that society has judged too taboo to laugh about. He or she then performs a stand-up routine, where the vulnerable people are in the audience and are the subject of the punchline.

The show, which has been nominated for an International Emmy, launched last year in Belgium on Dutch language broadcaster Vrt één and tackled issues including terminal illness, obesity, blindness, and mental illness. It was the highest rating entertainment premiere in Vrt één’s history and garnered praise for helping normalize issues surrounded by shame or bigotry.

Beta Film has bought more of Lineup Industries, the Amsterdam-based formats business formed by former Sony and Endemol execs and which counts “Long Lost Family,” and “The Bully Project” among its shows.

Germany’s Beta is known for its stable of international drama. The deal with Lineup gives it a much stronger foothold in the unscripted world through a tie-up with a well-regarded formats specialist. Lineup also sells finished unscripted shows such as “Emergency Call,” which has been just been renewed by C8 in France and Vox in Germany.

The company was founded by seasoned industry executives Ed Louwerse and Julian Curtis, both of whom were previously at Endemol and Sony Pictures Television where they helped launch shows such as “Deal or No Deal” and “Fear Factor” globally.

Louwerse told Variety the deal means closer links with Beta but Lineup will continue to operate autonomously. It also gives the company extra funding for content.

Gomorrah distributor Beta has taken a minority stake in the TV formats company.

Munich-based distributor Beta Film has acquired a minority stake in Dutch television formats firm Lineup Industries.

Long Lost Family distributor Lineup, which was founded by former Sony execs Ed Louwerse and Julian Curtis in 2014, will continue to operate independently but will help the German producer and distributor move further into light entertainment and formats.

Beta Film is best known for co-producing and selling high-end German TV dramas, such as Generation War, which aired on BBC2 and is currently working on Paula Milne-penned drama The Same Sky.

Lineup has struck a number of deals with UK indies and broadcasters.
