This '90s Star Is a Menacing Villain in This Hidden Gem Western Movie
Image
Directed by Ivan Kavanagh and starring Emile Hirsch, Never Grow Old is a grim Revisionist Western movie released in 2019. Hirsch plays Irish immigrant Patrick Tate, an undertaker who lives with his family in a small American settlement around 1840. This lawless frontier town is already on the edge of collapse when a dangerous man decides to dominate it.

Although the Tate family's original plan was to build a home in California, the undertaker thinks they need to save more money to move. So, they stay. Unfortunately, their lives are soon turned upside down with the arrival of a gang of outlaws led by the ruthless Dutch Albert. This fascinating villain is played by 1990s icon John Cusack in one of the best performances of his career. As the tension builds, a conflict between Patrick Tate and Dutch Albert starts brewing despite the fact that the villain's actions have been good for the undertaker's business.

‘The Vanishing Triangle’ Ending Explained & Series Recap: Who Had Killed Janice Wallace?
Image
Ivan Kavanagh’s The Vanishing Triangle chronicled the story of Lisa Wallace (India Mullen), an investigative journalist who was troubled by haunting memories of the past. Years ago, Lisa’s mother, Janice Wallace, was murdered in her own house. The kidnapper also assaulted Lisa, locked her inside a wardrobe, and raped her mother. The depraved man also took pictures of her. Unfortunately, the killer was never found, and the investigation was closed soon after. However, the killer resurfaced when Lisa wrote a new article.

Spoilers Ahead

What Was Inside The Package?

At the beginning of The Vanishing Triangle, Lisa received a strange courier. The courier contained pictures that suggested that the killer had kidnapped another woman. But why did the killer choose to contact Lisa after 15 years? On the 15th anniversary of her mother’s death, Lisa penned an article. In the piece, she berated the killer, calling him a...

10 Irish Horror Movies to Stream for St. Patrick’s Day
Image
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and Syfy’s celebrating accordingly with a marathon of the Leprechaun movies. But if you’re looking for horror inspiration beyond the pint-sized killer’s holiday-appropriate franchise, a vast world of worthy Irish horror movies is available at your fingertips.

If you’re feeling lucky, here are ten Irish horror movies you can stream today.

Grabbers – AMC+

If you’re in the mood for a horror-comedy creature feature, this movie is the answer. A small island off the coast of Ireland becomes ground zero to an alien invasion. These tentacled monsters, dubbed Grabbers by the locals, have an affinity for human blood. That’s terrible news for the locals until they discover alcohol is highly toxic to the spaced invaders. Naturally, they deduce the only way to survive the attack is to get hammered. Drunk villagers versus man-eating aliens make for an entertaining way to spend St.

There's Something Wrong With The Children Review: A Horror Film Still In Gestation
Image
Based on the title of this review, I'm sure some readers expect me to eviscerate Blumhouse's "There's Something Wrong with the Children." It's likely those aren't the same people who had diaper discount mailers sent out to them the moment they turned 18. Targeted ads assume having children is what some of us must do -- despite our personal feelings or fiscal abilities to raise, birth, or adopt children. That's incredibly scary, as it reduces body autonomy to be a conditional term for non-parents. (Not to mention the cis-heteronormativity of it all that can trigger gender dysphoria and the deepest of sighs from those who don't want to have children or do but sadly can't in the queer community.)

Before I dive in further, I'd like to give flowers to director Roxanne Benjamin. Unequivocally, she captures how frustrating, confusing, and insulting this attitude feels through Margaret's (Alisha Wainwright) perspective. While the...

‘The Vanishing Triangle’: ‘Downton Abbey’s Allen Leech & ‘Normal People’s India Mullen To Lead Sundance Now, Virgin Media & Eccho’s Irish Drama Series
Image
Exclusive: Allen Leech and India Mullen will lead the cast of an Irish drama series for AMC Networks’ Sundance Now and local broadcaster Virgin Media Television, we’ve learned.

The pair will topline six-part drama The Vanishing Triangle, which goes into production later this year with a U.S.-UK-Ireland production set-up, and Eccho Rights attached as international distributor. The show is inspired on true events that shook Ireland in the 1990s, when several women disappeared. While the characters and events in the series are fictional, the producers have spoken to several of the real life victims’ families, and hope the show will keep their stories in the Irish public’s mind. The show title is regularly used in the Irish media to refer to the events, which began with the disappearance of American woman Annie McCarrick in 1993 and spiraled to involve many similar cases.

Let’s Scare Bryan to Death: Ivan Kavanagh’s The Canal with Christine Makepeace
Image
Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re taking a trip to the Emerald Isle. But don’t expect a light romp along Ireland’s coast or in its lush forests. Instead, we’re navigating the bleak landscape of repressed male aggression in Ivan Kavanagh’s dread-soaked film, The Canal. Our guide this month is Christine Makepeace, a horror author whose latest book of short stories, The Sound of Breaking Glass, dives into topics such as “loss of self, isolation, and the soul-crushing machine that is capitalism.” She’s also the co-host of The Feminine Critique and serves as a consulting editor for Certified Forgotten. So, you could say she knows a thing or two about horror and film.

Released in 2014, The Canal actually managed to fly well below my radar, so I went in knowing very little beyond the basic IMDb...

‘Son’ – The Remarkable Exploration of Trauma in One of 2021’s Best Horror Movies
Writer, Director, Ivan Kavanagh, on the set of The Canal (2014)
Written and directed by Ivan Kavanagh, 2021’s Son is one of the most fascinating works of psychological horror I’ve seen recently, and I feel it should be getting a lot more recognition. Its premise already seethes with mystique – years after a young mother named Laura (Andi Matichak) has escaped a cult, she walks into […]

‘Son’ Review (Shudder)

Stars: Andi Matichak, Luke David Blumm, Cranston Johnson, Emile Hirsch, Blaine Maye, David Kallaway | Written and Directed by Ivan Kavanagh

A hellfire and damnation preacher’s sermon blares from the car radio as Laura and her infant son David (Luke David Blumm; The Sinner) escape from the cult she was raised in. She’ll run as far and as fast as she can and build a new life and identity for them. But now, eight years later the past has caught up to her. It seems she can run, but there are some things neither she nor David can hide from.

First, she sees strange people surrounding his bed. People who are, of course, gone when help arrives. The police think she was sleepwalking. She knows better, she’s too busy having nightmares to go for a walk. Then David falls mysteriously ill, having seizures and vomiting blood. But whatever it is,...

"They awakened something in him." Shudder has released an official trailer for a mysterious indie horror thriller titled Son, written & directed by Irish filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh. In Son, after a mysterious group breaks into Laura's home and attempts to abduct her young son, the two flee town in search of safety. Following her maternal instincts, she commits unspeakable acts to keep him alive, but soon she must decide how far she is willing to go to protect him from terrifying forces in her past. The film stars Andi Matichak, Emile Hirsch, Cranston Johnson, and Luke David Blumm as David. This looks incredibly creepy. The cult seems super demented and I don't like them. At all. Riders of Justice bags the Bifff’s Silver Méliès - Bifff 2021 - Awards
Image
The Canadian film Vicious Fun scooped the Grand Prize and the Audience Award during this year’s one-off online edition of the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. It was Bill Calahan’s cleverly self-referential Canadian movie Vicious Fun which won over the jury and the public at this 39th edition of the Bifff (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival), bagging itself both the Golden Raven and the Audience Award. The film follows in the footsteps of Joel, a film critic for a horror magazine who finds himself unintentionally involved in a support group for serial killers. Short of other options, Joel tries his best to blend in to avoid becoming their next victim. The Silver Raven, meanwhile, was won by two films in a tie-break: the Korean feature The Closet, directed by Kwan-bin Kim, and Son, which is the latest offering by Irish director Ivan Kavanagh (the recent author of the surprising western.

Q&a: Writer/Director Ivan Kavanagh Discusses Working with Andi Matichak and Luke David Blumm for Son
Image
A mother's fierce love stands between her child and a mysterious cult in the new movie Son, and with the horror film now available in theaters, On Demand, and Digital from Rlje Films, we caught up with writer/director Ivan Kavanagh (The Canal) to discuss the inspiration for his chilling new story, collaborating with Andi Matichak and Luke David Blumm to create a realistic mother-son bond, and the joys of working with Rlje Films and Shudder.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Ivan, and congratulations on your new movie, Son! How and when did you first come up with the idea for this film?

Ivan Kavanagh: The initial idea came to me just after the birth of my first son, five years ago. He had a very difficult birth and my wife and I were very worried about him for months afterwards, and it was a very stressful time for us,...

Focus Features Releases ‘Boogie’ From Eddie Huang; ‘My Salinger Year’ And ‘Boss Level’ Debut – Specialty Preview
Image
Even though it’s moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely.

Eddie Huang, who is best known for writing the best-selling Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir which was the inspiration for the popular ABC sitcom, makes his feature directorial debut with Boogie which Focus Features releases in theaters today.

The story follows Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) who goes by the name “Boogie”. He is a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York and dreams of one day playing in the NBA. However, his parents have other plans for him.

‘Son’ Review: Parenting Is Hard When Your Child Is From Hades
Image
Most parents have the odd stressful moment when they jokingly wonder if they’re raising a devil’s spawn. Unfortunately for Andi Matichak, that notion seems neither humorous nor hyperbolic in “Son,” wherein the star of David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” reboot has a more “Rosemary’s Baby”-ish problem on her hands.

This latest, Heartland-set feature from Irish writer-director Ivan Kavanagh (“Never Grow Old”) echoes his prior horror exercise, 2014’s “The Canal,” in that it similarly means to keep us uncertain whether our protagonist is bedeviled by supernatural peril or delusional psychosis. But that line isn’t trod quite so nimbly this time, and the film suffers somewhat from striking an oddly earnest tone (despite some gory bits) without necessarily being very convincing, when it might better have gone for straight nerve-jangling suspense. It’s an intriguing, watchable but mixed bag that Rlje Films is releasing March 5 to available theaters,...

John Cusack And Emile Hirsch Square Off In “Never Grow Old”
Two of my favorite actors, and especially actors who aren’t given enough juicy roles in the industry, happen to be John Cusack and Emile Hirsch. Both are talented actors who have had brushes with Oscar but never quite gotten to that Academy Award nomination. The former has been somewhat stuck in a rut of generic action outings of late, while the latter just isn’t working enough. To see them together in something always seemed like a treat in the making. Well, this week brings them face to face in a quality little Western called Never Grow Old. The film is a nice little effort, buoyed by strong work from the both of them. This is a Western, in all of its simple charm. Taking place in the peaceful frontier town of Garlow, home to Undertaker Patrick Tate (Emile Hirsch) and his family, we’ll see it turn into...

John Cusack, Emile Hirsch, and Déborah François in Never Grow Old (2019)
Never Grow Old Review: John Cusack Terrifies in Dark Western Thriller
John Cusack, Emile Hirsch, and Déborah François in Never Grow Old (2019)
Never Grow Old is a dark, gritty western from Irish writer/director Ivan Kavanagh. A trio of repugnant outlaws take over a bleak frontier town. Their lawless, godless ways clashing with the fire and brimstone preachings of a temperance movement. Never Grow Old is an unforgiving look at human nature. The rain and mud soaked setting matching the ugliness of the premise. The film is absolutely riveting. John Cusack has his best performance in years as the terrifying and murderous villain.

The film opens in the frontier town of Garlow. The year is 1849. Emile Hirsch stars as Patrick Tate, an Irish undertaker and carpenter struggling to make ends meet. He has a beautiful pregnant wife, Audrey (D&#233borah Fran&#231ois), and two small children. The family is happy, even under the strict religious rule of the town preacher (Danny Webb); who has banned liquor and prostitution.

A stormy night brings...

Emile Hirsch & John Cusack in Trailer for Western 'Never Grow Old'
"Do you feel proud of yourself?!" Saban Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie western titled Never Grow Old, which is a shortened version of the original working title Where We'll Never Grow Old. This gritty western takes place at an American frontier town. The plot is about an Irish undertaker who profits when outlaws take over a peaceful town, but his family comes under threat as the death toll rises. Emile Hirsch plays the undertaker, and the cast includes John Cusack, Déborah François, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Danny Webb, Anne Coesens, Blake Berris, Paul Reid, as well as Léa Seydoux. Another western about a bunch of outlaws roughing up a town? How original. The cinematography in this looks so bad, so poorly lit in every scene. Don't think this dastardly new western is going to impress anyone. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Ivan Kavanagh's Never Grow Old,...

Sharon Tate
First Look at Hilary Duff in The Haunting of Sharon Tate
Sharon Tate
The 50th anniversary of the Sharon Tate murders happens next year, and there is more interest in the heinous crime than ever before. Most attention has been placed on Quentin Tarantino's upcoming epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which will use the Tate murder as a wraparound for its 60s set story. But there is another Sharon Tate movie coming, and today we have a first look at this true crime psychological thriller.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate stars former Disney princess Hilary Duff in the title role. And she has already been lambasted by Sharon Tate's sister over the movie. It's Margot Robbie playing Sharon Tate in Tarantino's film, which has garnered less vitriol from the Tate family. A first look photo shows what Duff has in store while embedding the character.

Saban Films announced today that they have acquired U.S. distribution rights from Voltage Pictures...
