‘Bangkok Dog’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: D.Y. Sao, Brian Le, Bear Williams, Sahajak Boontanakij, Ron Smoorenburg | Written by Laurence Walsh | Directed by Chaya Supannarat

Our story kicks off with Special Agent Andrew Kang (D.Y. Sao), a U.S.-based operative with a serious love for solving problems with his fists or more accurately, his entire arsenal of martial arts skills. After a drug bust in Los Angeles uncovers a shipment laced with tragedy (five dead bodies stashed among the contraband), Kang worms his way into an undercover mission in Bangkok. His task? Impersonate a captured cartel operative, Benz Wu (Brian Le), and dismantle a ruthless Thai crime syndicate from the inside. The plot is straightforward in fact it’s almost skeletal, but that’s by design and really not an issue for me. The script knows its role: it’s a bullet point checklist that accommodates the real spectacle, the fights and it executes that role with flawless precision.

Bangkok Dog Review: Kicks and Consequences in the Criminal Underworld
Image
Bangkok Dog is a visceral exploration of morals and identity at a time when the distinction between hero and villain is becoming more ambiguous. The film, directed by Chaya Supannarat, is about a U.S. agent named Andrew Kang (D.Y. Sao) who infiltrates a Thai drug gang.

Bangkok Dog reflects our times at its core. The harsh world of the drug trade is used as a setting for more in-depth studies of trust and betrayal. Kang’s transition from police officer to criminal shows how roles are set by circumstances rather than conviction.

As Supannarat’s first film as a director, it stands out for its lively choreography and exploration of modern themes. Supporting characters, like Charn Chai Yoodee, played by Byron Bishop, make the story more complicated by showing a wide range of human emotions.

At a key point in the comeback of Thai action movies, Bangkok Dog tries to change the genre.

Batman Beyond's Perfect Live-Action Movie Adaptation Imagines The Sci-Fi Future Of The DC Hero 23 Years After The Show's Final Episode

With several new upcoming Batman movies and shows in development, many have been holding out hope for Batman Beyond to be adapted into live-action.

As it turns out, a fan film by Lumis Entertainment has beaten DC Studios to the punch, providing an excellent look at Batman Beyond through the live-action lens. It's described as a "high-octane martial arts thriller" starring D.Y. Sao, Brian Le, Byron Bishop, Jenny Philomena Van Der Sluijs, as well as Sahajak Boontanakji. The main guy in here...

‘Til Death Do Us Part’ Review
Image
Stars: Cam Gigandet, Natalie Burn, Ser’Darius Blain, Jason Patric, Nicole Arlyn, Orlando Jones, Pancho Moler, D.Y. Sao | Written by Chad Law, Shane Dax Taylor | Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.

As Til Death Do Us Part opens The Best Man sits in a pew working on his speech as upbeat music plays in the background. That’s followed by similar glimpses of other wedding party members prepping for the ceremony. A flashback to The Bride and Groom, nobody in this film has a name, on vacation serves to reinforce the happy image.

But Til Death Do Us Part isn’t a Hallmark Channel rom-com or Lifetime Channel thriller. Because when The Bride gets cold feet and bails on the wedding, we find out everyone involved in the ceremony is a highly skilled assassin. Now the stood-up Groom wants more than just his ring back, and their employer doesn’t take resignations well.

Pearry Reginald Teo, Writer-Director of ‘The Gene Generation,’ Dies at 44

Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.

Teo died Thursday of an unknown cause in his home in North Hollywood, his rep Italia Gandolfo told The Hollywood Reporter.

The writer-director’s body of work included the Hellraiser-inspired Necromentia (2009) and The Assent (2019), a movie about exorcism that featured Tatum O’Neal and premiered at the Toronto After Dark Festival.

Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.

The Gene Generation (2007), released by Lionsgate and made for a reported $2.5 million, starred Ling as a kick-ass assassin battling DNA hackers and included a cameo by Faye Dunaway.

Fast Vengeance (2021), starring martial arts star D.Y. Sao, centered on the world of underground motorcycle racing. (Sao and Teo would reunite for 2022’s Shadow Master.)

Film Review: Shadow Master (2022) by Pearry Reginald Tao
Image
As a child I was fascinated by “Manimal” an old TV series where a man could transform into various creatures. Also, by “Braveheart” a cartoon sheriff with the powers of hawk, wolf, puma, and bear (currently singing that as I write this). So, the concept of a guy revived with martial animal powers caught my attention. With one of the executive producers (Prachya Pinkaew) being the man who brought us Tony Jaa it looked like there could be some potential here. I mean what martial arts movie fan doesn’t mind a bit of Tiger or Monkey Style? Can’t be too bad right???

Shadow Master review – martial arts meet dark arts in ultraviolent horror sci-fi
D.Y. Sao
Someone or something is abducting children from an asylum. Step forward the new nightwatchman, a martial arts star battling demonic voices ordering him to kill. Cue mayhem

This pulpy, ultraviolent horror-sci-fi-action whatnot of a film seems to unfold in a post-apocalyptic end-time – or maybe just a very rough suburb of Los Angeles. It’s hard to tell, nor does it much matter. Whatever the context, this is a world where it’s always night, where colours are so desaturated that everything’s a kind of slushy orangey brown, everybody has unkempt hair or dreads, and the borders between the spirit world and that of the living are somewhat porous.

A young man named Voaen (played by martial arts champ Dy Sao) arrives to take a night watchman job at a crusty squat which is in fact some sort of asylum for families with sick family members. After introductions to the many and varied residents,...

‘Shadow Master’ Review
Image
Stars: Layton Matthews, D.Y. Sao, Anna Harr, Dominique Swain, Craig Ng | Written and Directed by Pearry Reginald Teo

Set in what appears to be a dystopian, and possibly post-apocalyptic America, Shadow Master opens with a Swat team walking in on a martial arts battle in what looks like a hospital turned into a slaughterhouse complete with hooks and chains.

They arrest the only person still alive. Back at the station Detective Russells begins interrogating the suspect. He claims to be John Doe, although we’ll later find out his mane is actually An Voaen, the hospital’s night watchman. A job that paid him with food and a place to live.

The hospital is actually abandoned, and judging by its occupants such as the Harley Quinn wannabe Dewitt and her mother might have been an asylum. The group’s leader Boon-Nam tells him that there have been issues with children disappearing in the night,...

Shadow Master – Review
Image
D.Y. Sao in Shadow Master. Courtesy of Saban Films

When you’re making an urban post-apocalyptic, supernatural martial arts movie a lot can go wrong, and most of it does in Shadow Master. The plot is mostly drivel about The Four Horsemen (without horses) of the Apocalypse snatching children from a rundown multi-story warehouse that is shelter for a bedraggled group of survivors of whatever the unspecified disaster was that left the world all gray and smoky, inside and out. The evil quartet is doing this for a world-conquering ritual, opposed by some sort of Death God, who recruits our hero (D.Y. Sao) to take on his powers at the cost of his soul to protect the folks he’s only just met when the thing starts.

Actually, the opening scene has Sao, face obscured by long hair like the creepy gal from The Ring, killing a bunch of cops,...
