Ponman Ott Release Update! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

After impressing audiences during its theatrical run, Basil Joseph’s much-awaited film Ponman is all set for its digital debut. The film was released in theaters on January 30, 2025, and now, nearly 1.5 months later, the makers have planned its digital release. The streaming giant JioHotstar recently announced that Basil Joseph’s starrer will soon be available for streaming on their platform.

What To Expect From Ponman?

Directed by Jotish Shankar, Ponman stars Basil Joseph, Sajin Gopu, Lijomol Jose, Anand Manmadhan, and Deepak Parambol in pivotal roles. The title Ponman literally translates to “the man with gold.”

The film revolves around Ajesh, a gold dealer who lends gold jewelry for the marriage of Bruno’s sister, Steffi. However, his life takes a dangerous turn when the bride’s criminal husband decides to keep the gold and eliminate him. Adapted from Gr Indugopan’s novel Nālañcu cer̲uppakkār,...

Steffi Graf
Ponman (2025) Movie Review: Excellent Performances Anchor This Anxiety-Inducing Drama
Steffi Graf
Based on writer G.R.Indugopan’s “Nalanchu Cheruppakkar,” Jothish Shankar’s “Ponman” is a synthesis and character study of toxic masculinity while tackling the central theme of dowry menace. “Ponman,” translated as ‘the man with the gold’ does not make an in-depth, but rather a muted commentary against the dowry System. Despite legal prohibition under the Dowry Prohibition Act (1961), dowry is still normalized in Kerala, thereby leading to dowry-led deaths and suicides. “Ponman” is centered around one such woman who falls victim to dowry and the man who lends her gold. But does the film give her enough voice and arc? Well, let’s get there later.

Ponman’s titular character Ajesh Pp is a jewellery agent involved in Madiyil Jewellery’s shady gold-lending business in Kollam. He crosses paths with Steffi Graf, her widowed mother, and communist brother Bruno. Steffi and her family are financially struggling even without...

“A feat that even most commercial films fail to achieve” : Ponman (2025) – Editorial Review
Image
“Ajeshadaa… Ajesh…”

This signature catchphrase from the titular character Ajesh, played by Basil Joseph, could have been meme material, but instead, it stands as a testament to unfathomable perseverance.

Adapted gracefully from a screenplay written jointly by Justin Mathew and G.R. Indugopan, based on the book Naalanju Cheruppakkaar (transl: A Few Youngsters) written by Indugopan himself, Ponman brings every single frame to life through Jothish’s finesse in direction.

Honestly, I was surprised by Jothish Shankar‘s directorial debut Ponman and never expected it to be such an outstanding experience. It’s evident from every bit of this movie that he’s definitely going places.

Basil Joseph in Ponman (2025)

I’m awestruck by the well-written characters in this movie, the performers who effortlessly bring them to life, and most importantly, the dialogues they deliver—lines that feel like literal arrows of fire.

Basil Joseph: Redefining Character Depth in Ponman

Starting with Ponman himself,...

Christy review: Malavika Mohanan-Mathew Thomas film on forbidden love falters midway
Image
ReviewThough the film is named after Malavika Mohan’s Christy, it really is Roy’s tale. Christy, at times bold and other times confused, does not seem to have the will to act or decide. On the side of a boat trudging unsteadily across the Poovar backwaters is Roy, sea-sick and throwing up. He manages a smile as he spots another friend follow suit. This is how we are introduced to Mathew Thomas’s character in Christy - a boy in the final years of school, slacking off and having such fun with mates that it will make one miss school. A catchy title song sets the tone of the film against the backdrop of Poovar, a town to the south of Thiruvananthapuram, where a lake, river, and sea merge. It is into this boyhood life that director Alvin Henry plants a forbidden love story where a boy falls in...

Prithviraaj Sukumaran: ‘Kaapa’ has a very strong story and that is the key to making good cinema today
Image
When ‘Kaapa’ released in theatres on December 22, 2022, the rousing audience response instantly proved that the film had broken new ground. The Shaji Kailas directorial headlined by Prithviraj Sukumaran in a charismatic and gritty avatar, is set in the crime-ridden underbelly of Thiruvananthapuram and has won praise for redefining the gangster genre in Malayalam cinema. While critics are praising its hyperlocal setting and transcendent story that depicts the vulnerabilities and compulsions of hardened gangsters, the film, even in its third week, is drawing huge crowds.

Based on the novel ‘Shankumukhi’ by Gr Indugopan, the film also stars Aparna Balamurali, Asif Ali, Anna Ben and traces the rise of a gang leader who turns into a politician.

Prithviraj Sukumaran adds, “Playing a character like Kotta Madhu was challenging because he rules his world with an iron fist and yet, abides by a certain version of right and wrong. This film has a...

Kaapa review: Prithviraj’s action thriller is old wine in a prehistoric bottle
Image
ReviewShaji Kailas’s Prithviraj starrer doesn’t work as a mass-action film because it doesn’t have enough originality. Sowmya RajendranFacebook/Prithviraj SukumaranKAAPA stands for the Kerala Anti-social Activities Prevention Act, and Shaji Kailas’s action thriller Kaapa (written by Gr Indugopan based on his novel Shangumukhi) is about a person who unexpectedly finds herself on the goondas list. This seems like a fresh idea, but unfortunately, the film plays out like a pale imitation of many, many gangster sagas that we have seen over the years. Prithiviraj wears the mantle of alpha gangster Kotta Madhu, with veteran actor Jagadish playing his chief henchman. Madhu is Superman in general, but there is a past with which he is yet to make peace. Prameela (Aparna Balamurali) is his fiery wife who can make him bend to her will. There is another couple – Anand (Asif Ali) and Binu (Anna Ben) – whose lives intersect with theirs,...

After 'Kaduva' success, Prithviraj-Kailas duo's 'Kaapa' set for Dec 22 release
Image
Following the success of ‘Kaduva’, Malayalam cinema star Prithviraj Sukumaran and ace director Shaji Kailas have paired up once more for their upcoming action thriller ‘Kaapa’.

The new project is riding high on audience expectations after the triumph of ‘Kaduva’ at the box office. ‘Kaduva’, an action comedy, was the first film collaboration of the actor-director duo and garnered praise all over.

‘Kaapa’, on the other hand, is set in the seedy underbelly of Thiruvananthapuram, where rival criminals engage in ruthless gang fights. The screenplay has been written by G.R. Indugopan.

In addition to Prithviraj Sukumaran, ‘Kaapa’ also stars Asif Ali, Aparna Balamurali, Indrans and Anna Ben in key roles.

The much-anticipated film is receiving much praise for its racy trailer. Prithviraj Sukumaran is portrayed as having a distinctive, dynamic persona in the trailer, which tells the tale of ‘Law Above Justice’.

The movie is scheduled for release on December 22, just in time for Christmas.

Prithviraj plays gangster in much-awaited crime thriller 'Kaapa'
Image
The makers of director Shaji Kailas’s eagerly awaited crime thriller ‘Kaapa’, featuring actor Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead, have released a teaser that shows the actor playing a gangster in the film.

Superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran turned 40 on October 16 and to celebrate this special day, Yoodlee Films released the stunning teaser of their forthcoming Malayalam production, ‘Kaapa’.

The film also stars Asif Ali, Aparna Balamurali, and Anna Ben in pivotal roles.

The teaser promises an action-packed gritty story, which revolves around cold-blooded gangs in Thiruvananthapuram, warring to gain control over the city’s suburbs and slums.

This is a world where revenge and fear rule hearts and minds and ‘Law Above Justice’ is the norm.

As the title hints, the movie revolves around the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 2007 (Kaapa).

Adding another layer of intrigue to the proceedings is the slowburning performance of superstar Asif Ali.

Prithviraj, whose dramatic entry in the teaser,...

Oru Thekkan Thallu Case review: Great performances, but storytelling could be better
Image
ReviewBiju Menon, Padmapriya, Nimisha Sajayan and Roshan Mathew are wonderful in the film, which loses some appeal due to its storytelling.CrisFrom the top of a 250-metre high lighthouse on the beach, all of a little town in South Kerala could be seen, says the narrator of Oru Thekkan Thallu Case. Inside the tower then, on cue, appears the cartoon figure of Biju Menon. A nice little animation introduces the characters of the town in the titles before the film opens. The situation is made clear in a few scenes — Biju Menon is Amminipilla, a sort of hero figure in the town whom no one wants to mess with. A gang of five young men are pitted against him for many reasons. The film, based on a short story by Gr Indugopan, revolves around this rivalry, set against a beautiful rustic background, but lacking in storytelling quality. It is director Sreejith N’s first film.
