Netflix’s New Releases Coming in August 2025
Image

Kicking off August is the rom-com My Oxford Year, which focuses on the tried and trusted formula of a young American girl heading to stuffy old Europe and finding love with some impossibly handsome and terribly charming guy, so it’s almost guaranteed to find a huge audience. In this instance, Sofia Carson plays Anna, an ambitious American student at Oxford University whose life is changed when she meets...

Night Always Comes: Cast, Release Date, Plot of Vanessa Kirby Movie Based on A Novel By Willy Vlautin
Image
What does it mean to fight for your place in the world?

For director Benjamin Caron, that’s the central question in Night Always Comes, an urgent and visceral thriller about one woman’s struggle to survive, starring and produced by Emmy and Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman). With the film arriving in August, you can watch the trailer above and check out even more new photos below.

“What drew me to the film was its exploration of survival and sacrifice and the idea of quiet heroism,” Caron tells Tudum. “It asks the question, ‘Who gets to feel safe, and at what cost?’ ”

Written by Sarah Conradt (Mothers’ Instinct), the movie centers on the occasionally reckless Lynette (Kirby) over the course of one stressful evening as she tries to save her family’s home before time runs out. Night Always Comes reunites Kirby and Caron, who previously...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on September 12th, reviewing the new release “Here After,” a parapsychological thriller featuring Connie Britton. In theaters on September 13th.

On a rainy day, Robin gets into a bicycle accident, so severe she dies … for 15 minutes. When she emerges from a coma, she seems back to normal, even regaining her speech. ‘Here After’ Review: A Child Returns From Death’s Door in Uninspired Supernatural Drama
Image
Many movies have dealt with the agonized grief that follows a child’s death. More than a few, notably “Pet Sematary” and its ilk, have dealt with the … er, awkwardness when said child unnaturally comes back to life, or at least un-death. Smoothly crafted but uninspired “Here After” tries to have it both ways, playing that resurrection for horror-adjacent creepiness that never quite goes anywhere, then pivoting to a sentimental mix of sacrifice and redemption similar to “faith-based entertainment” without quite making the commitment.

Despite the efforts of toplining Connie Britton as an American expat in Rome, Robert Salerno’s feature directorial bow ultimately feels like a supernatural drama suited for television, too mild in its suspense and too pat in its soapy emphasis on maternal suffering. Paramount is launching the co-production in U.S. theaters and on digital this Friday, several weeks after its Italian release.

Over the last quarter-century,...

Here After Clip Sees Connie Britton Hallucinate Vulgar Insults
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Screen Rant is proud to present an exclusive clip from Paramount's upcoming release, Here After, which hits select theaters and digital on Friday, September 13. When her daughter is resuscitated after a fatal accident, Claire Hiller is relieved beyond belief. However, the official synopsis warns that "her relief turns to dread as Claire notices changes in [Robin], suspecting something dark has followed her back from the brink of death." There's little a mother wouldn't do for her child, and Claire must dive deep into the world of the paranormal if she hopes to save Robin's soul.

With a PG-13 rating, Here After will likely lean into the element of suspense to create tension, rather than rely on blood and gore.

The supernatural thriller is written by Sarah Conradt and directed by Robert Salerno. It stars Connie Britton, best known for her roles in Nashville,...

‘Mothers’ Instinct’ Review: Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway Play Desperate Housewives in Sad and Silly Period Psychodrama
Image
A ’60s-set psychodrama about a pair of suburban housewives whose friendship goes haywire — and then some — after one of their children dies in a freak accident, the misconceived but morbidly entertaining “Mothers’ Instinct” is far too slapdash to respect the seriousness of its premise, but at the same time also far too serious to indulge in the campiness of its plot. The result is a movie that’s a little fucked up, a little fun, and mostly just very, very sad in a way that it doesn’t have the heart to explore.

Alice is the fragile one, at least at first. A crumbling eggshell of a woman who’s just been glued back together by the most discrete male psychiatrists in all of Mayberry, she can hardly make breakfast for her seven- or eight-year-old son Theo (Eamon O’Connell) without threatening to flake apart from the pressure to keep up appearances.

The psychological thriller stars Academy Award winners Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway.

Mothers’ Instinct is based on the novel Derrière la Haine by Barbara Abel, and it’s also a remake of director Olivier Masset-Depasse’s same-titled French-language film from 2018.

‘Mothers’ Instinct’ Trailer: Anne Hathaway Blames Jessica Chastain for Her Suburban Grief
Image
There is nothing as haunting as a mother’s grief over losing a child.

Anne Hathaway stars as a woman whose son has a fatal fall from her balcony, with Jessica Chastain playing her best friend and neighbor. Benoît Delhomme directs the domestic drama “Mothers’ Instinct,” which is a remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2017 Belgium film “Duelles” based on the novel “Derrière la Haine” by Barbara Abel.

Now, following a recent U.K. release, Neon has announced a U.S. release beginning on July 26, followed by a digital debut on August 13. Ahead of a release, the new trailer has now arrived.

A remake of Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 French-language psychological thriller, the Sarah Conradt-scripted film follows the friendship of two 1960s housewives that rapidly deteriorates after a tragedy. Also starring Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Caroline Lagerfelt, cinematography comes from, of course, Delhomme himself.

Alistair Ryder said in his review, “It wouldn’t take much to convince an unsuspecting audience member that Mothers’ Instinct is the latest dispatch from the Don’t Worry Darling cinematic universe. The directorial debut of cinematographer Benoît Delhomme initially appears to be a surface-level rendering of a bygone era,...

Mothers’ Instinct Review: A Hitchcockian Thriller That Wants for a Double Dose of Camp
Image
When Toddy Haynes’s May December was released last year, it prompted a worldwide (or at least Twitter-wide) reckoning with the meaning of camp. There were furious debates as to the exact parameters of the term and which works fell within them. For Mothers’ Instinct, this matter becomes a kind of existential crisis, because celebrated cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s 1960s-set directorial debut can’t decide whether it wants to be considered camp or not, as it awkwardly pitches itself between a somber drama and antic melodrama.

Like May December, this remake of the Olivier Masset-Depasse’s 2018 film Duelles is a domestic drama that throws two women into the same space and steadily ratchets up the tension between them. Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Céline (Anne Hathaway) live in neighboring homes in the suburbs. Alice’s son Theo (Eamon Patrick O’Connell) and Céline’s son Max (Baylen D. Bielitz) are best friends,...

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’, ‘Godzilla x Kong’ headline bumper weekend
Image
Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.

Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.

Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

‘Mothers’ Instinct’ Review: Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain in a Suburban Trauma Drama That’s Not as Juicy as It Should Be

Esteemed cinematographer Benoît Delhomme’s credits have included a conspicuous number of thoughtful, visually sumptuous period pieces, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Theory of Everything and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as well as a few films made to promote fashion brands like Balmain, Dior and Chanel. In a way, that résumé partially explains why he might have been inclined to make his directorial debut with Mothers’ Instinct, for which he also serves as the Dp.

This pulpy, psychologically shallow and yet beautifully shot period thriller is all about two soignée suburban housewives — played by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway — who spend the film’s 96 minutes suffering, scheming and losing their minds while wearing immaculate vintage-inspired costumes. Ultimately, the characters’ motivations, like their titular instinct, are weakly delineated, but viewers are well-advised not to worry their pretty little heads about any of that and just concentrate on the pantsuits.

‘Mothers’ Instinct’ Review: Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain Primly Do Battle in a Loopy Suburban Psychodrama
Image
Not every good film is necessarily a good time, and vice versa. On the latter front, see “Mothers’ Instinct,” a 1960s-set suburban psychodrama too silly to secure our belief and too reserved to pass muster as go-for-broke camp — but still compulsive enough, twisty enough and finally berserk enough to keep us hooked through all its tonal and narrative lane-changing. As a pair of model homemakers and next-door neighbors whose close friendship is severely undone by sudden tragedy, even stars Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain don’t always seem to be making entirely the same movie: Hathaway’s sly, high-gloss vamping points to a more brittly amusing one than Chastain’s earnest emotional commitment, turning their characters’ escalating picket-fence battle into a compelling tussle for the soul of the script itself. One wins, and not predictably so.

First-time feature director Benoît Delhomme, however, doesn’t have much command over this strange,...

Mothers’ Instinct review – Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain in 60s-set operatic melodrama
Anne Hathaway
Thriller about rich suburban housewives whose picture-perfect lives belie past traumas lacks the self-awareness needed to prevent it from being utterly absurd

Here is a hilariously unsubtle and increasingly ridiculous psycho-melodrama of the 1960s American suburbs starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Some kind of cult status must be on the way, with emote-along midnight screenings, and maybe a new Catfight of the Year Oscar has to be brought in to reward it.

Mothers’ Instinct is written by Sarah Conradt and directed and shot by celebrated cinematographer Benoît Delhomme making his feature debut; it is partly based on the 2012 French-language thriller Derrière la haine (Behind the Hate) by Barbara Abel, and partly on a 2018 Belgian movie adaptation. Hathaway and Chastain play Celine and Alice respectively, two prosperous stay-at-home housewives giving it the full Betty Draper feminine mystique: they are friends with matching picture-perfect lives, each with an adored nine-year-old son,...

Mother’s Instinct trailer: Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain thriller is a remake of 2018 Belgian film
Image
Mothers’ Instinct, a remake of the 2018 Belgian film Duelles, went into production back in May of 2022, with Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) – who also happen to be close friends in their personal lives – in the lead roles. Once filming had wrapped, Hathaway revealed that her role in the film was the hardest she had ever played, as it tapped into her own worst fear. Unfortunately, a release date for Mothers’ Instinct still hasn’t been announced, but that information must be coming down the line soon, because Studiocanal UK has gone ahead and released a trailer for the film. You can check that out in the embed above, and a newly unveiled poster can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Duelles won nine Magritte Awards (the Belgian equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Film and Best Director. It...

Mothers’ Instinct Trailer: Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway Lead Benoît Delhomme’s Psychological Thriller
Benoît Delhomme
One film we’ve been waiting to see pop up on the fall festival circuit is Mothers’ Instinct, the directorial debut of acclaimed cinematographer Benoît Delhomme, who has worked with Tsai Ming-liang, Anton Corbijn, John Hillcoat, Julian Schnabel, Anthony Minghella, Tran Anh Hung, and more. Led by Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, the Greek distributor Spentzos Film has now unveiled the first trailer though the U.S. release from Neon has yet to be announced.

“Annie and I, we have a lot of fun in that movie. And it’s a throwback to another… I like to think of it like a little bit of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?...

Mothers’ Instinct: Anne Hathaway says role in thriller was the hardest she has ever played
Image
Earlier this year, we shared the news that Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) and Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) – who also happen to be close friends in their personal lives – would be starring in the psychological thriller Mothers’ Instinct, a remake of the 2018 Belgian film Duelles, which was loosely based on Barbara Abel’s 2012 novel Behind the Hatred (Derrière la haine). At the time, Duelles director Olivier Masset-Depasse was also at the helm of this English-language telling of the story, but he ended up having to drop out due to a family commitment. Mothers’ Instinct did make it into production with cinematographer Benoit Delhomme (The Theory of Everything) directing, making his feature directorial debut. The film recently wrapped, and during an interview with Vogue Hong Kong Hathaway revealed that she found it very difficult to play her role in this movie.

Josh Charles, Anders Danielsen Lie Set to Join Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway in ‘Mothers’ Instinct’
Image
Josh Charles (“The Good Wife”) and Anders Danielsen Lie (“Bergman Island”) are set to join Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway in “Mothers’ Instinct.”

The film, which is based on Barbara Abel’s novel “Derrière la Haine,” tells the story of Alice (Chastain) and Celine (Hathaway), two best friends and mothers living an outwardly idyllic life a stone’s throw from each other in 1960s America. But the manicured lawns and successful husbands fade into the background when a tragic accident unravels their bond and gives way to guilt, suspicion and paranoia.

Olivier Masset-Depasse made a French adaptation, “Duelles,” in 2018.

Benoit Delhomme (“The Theory of Everything”) is directing the English-language version while Sarah Conradt (“50 States of Fright”) is adapting the English-language script.

Shooting is underway in New York.

European production outfit Anton are repping sales for the project internationally. They also sold the film alongside CAA Media Finance domestically, with Neon acquiring U.

Josh Charles (We Own This City, The Good Wife) and Norwegian actor Anders Danielsen Lie, who plays Renate Reinsve’s love interest Aksel in Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, have signed on to co-star alongside Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway in the upcoming psycho-thriller Mothers’ Instinct.

Chastain and Hathaway play Alice and Celine, best friends and neighbors who live superficially perfect lives as suburban housewives in 1960s America. But a tragic accident shatters that facade and guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to disolve their sisterly bond, turning the two mothers against one another in a psychological battle of wills.

Mothers’ Instinct is based on the Barbara Abel’s novel Derrière la Haine, which was adapted by Olivier Masset-Depasse as the 2018 Belgian thriller Duelles. Sarah Conradt (50 States of Fright) adapted the English-language script.

But this perfect harmony is suddenly shattered after a tragic accident. Guilt, suspicion and paranoia combine to unravel their sisterly bond and a psychological battle of wills begins as the maternal instinct reveals its darker side.

Hailee Steinfeld To Star In Black List Thriller 'Dead Of Winter'
Music video director Anthony Mandler will be making his feature film debut, one way or another. The helmer, who has worked with folks like Rihanna, Drake, Usher, Jay-z, The Killers, John Legend, T.I., One Republic and Muse has already lined up two movie gigs: "Die In A Gunfight" with Zac Efron attached, and the comic book adaptation "Last Days Of American Crime." However, a third movie may be beating them both to the big screen. Mandler has signed on to direct "Dead Of Winter," a Black List script by Sarah Conradt that has "True Grit" breakout Hailee Steinfeld set to star. Not too bad. But unfortunately, it sounds like a pretty rote little thriller. Steinfeld will play a teen who heads to a remote cabin with her father, who hopes his daughter will more closely bond with her new stepmother. But a fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up,...

Originally set up at Lionsgate, the film follows ”a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother — an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together.
