A sequel to Lights Out was announced a week after the original film’s release in 2016, but nothing ever came of it. Replying to a fan on Instagram, director David F. Sandberg confirmed that the follow-up is unlikely to happen.

“It’s been nine years since that movie came out. I think the moment has passed,” the filmmaker wrote. “There was a script for a sequel but that particular script wouldn’t work now that Gabriel is an adult.”

He’s referring to Gabriel Bateman, who starred as Martin in the supernatural horror film alongside Teresa Palmer, Alexander Dipersia, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello.

Lights Out, the acclaimed horror hit teaming first-time feature director David F. Sandberg and producer James Wan, has surpassed the $100 million mark, it was announced today by Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, Worldwide Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. The modestly budgeted film clicked with audiences in its July 22nd North American debut, posting a strong opening weekend and holding its momentum for a current domestic gross of $63.1 million. What happens if you take a Steven Moffat-alike horror concept, but remove the mad man in a box and all the other comfortable Doctor Who trappings, and sub in some family drama and serious psychological scares? As it turns out, you get a taut 81 minutes of effective terror.

Lights Out is a film that leaves a lasting impression. This is because it preys on our most primordial fears and one of the oldest questions in The Big Book Of Scary Things: what’s going on in the dark?

Director David F Sandberg – who also wrote and directed the short film on which Eric Heisserer (2010’s A Nightmare On Elm Street, The Thing remake, Final Destination 5) based the feature-length Lights Out screenplay – isn’t the first person to tackle this sort of topic on screen, and he certainly won’t be the last.

You may recall a little short film called Lights Out that floated around the Internet a while back.

That short film played on a primal fear of the dark that we all share and utilized it to tell a quick little atmospheric feature that was chilling.

Well, James Wan noticed that short film too and bringing the original director – David F. Sandberg - on board, and now with a bigger budget and canvas to paint on, we have a full length feature to disappear into the dark with.

Here's the skinny: I walk into any horror film with equal doses of jaded cynicism and excitement. I've seen a lot of scares from a lot of different playbooks so I've become, for better or worse, savvy to most tricks and jump scares.

Lights Out is truly scary, never letting a moment pass without soaking it...

Though it may have traded a compelling story for jump scares and shock value, David Sandberg’s directorial debut Lights Out has hit the ground running, conjuring up a box office haul of $63.6 million worldwide – off the back of a $4.9 million budget, no less – along with a full-blown sequel at New Line.

But one point of contention that some viewers took issue with was the film’s eerie ending. It’s something that A.V. Club came down hard on in their review, prompting David Sandberg to issue a response to clarify his creative choice. Sandberg’s Lights Out arrives in theaters everywhere, and at the recent press day for the film, we had the chance to catch up with the director as well as his wife and creative partner, Lotta Losten, to hear about their amazing journey from Sweden to Hollywood. Congrats on the film, guys. What kind of material did you grow up on that may have influenced your creative path or the material that you’re now interested in writing or directing?

David F. Sandberg: I grew up watching lots...

The short that inspired it packs more frights into its 3+ minutes of running time.

At the root of all fears lies the dread of the unknown that hides and bides its time in the dark. Exploiting this ground zero human anxiety, David F. Sandberg’s Lights Out strips the bells and whistles from a basic notion and turns darkness itself –or an entity empowered by it– into a relentless villain. Perhaps because its premise is too simple to a fault, the scribe Eric Heisserer, working off of an identically-titled 2013 short film by Sandberg, stuffs an unconvincing “troubled child” back-story beneath the film’s intriguing yet thin shell. The result is neither effectively frightening nor persuasive. The feature-length Lights Out is your typical below-average horror flick in a lot of ways: some successful jump scares, an undercooked script, and shaky dialogue you’re occasionally willing to forgive in exchange of competent direction and random moments of comic relief...

A solid hook is one of the biggest factors in what makes a successful film pitch. This doesn’t guarantee a film will end up being good, but it’s a place that can start you off on the right path. Perhaps this is why it is becoming increasingly common to find shorts turned into feature-length films. District 9 and Whiplash each had humble beginnings as short films, helping to draw attention to financing for their feature-length treatment. Lights Out is no different and it succeeds largely because director, David F. Sandberg allows the world to expand beyond his excellent short and become something much more disturbing.

The general premise is simple: when you turn out the light, something appears in the shadows. Even now, typing this out, I’m treated to goosebumps. When you flick the light back on, the apparition is gone. It may not even notice you...

Sometimes you go into a movie as a horror fan just hoping that what you’re about to see will deliver the proverbial goods. Such was the case for me with Lights Out; I fell in love with David F. Sandberg’s brilliant short film by the same name when I first saw it, and so I was curious just how well his three-minute tale of terror would translate for longer-form storytelling. Honestly, though, Lights Out ended up being even more fun and terrifying than I could have possibly expected, as it brilliantly preys on our most primal fears and thoughtfully delves into mental health issues, with its villain becoming a metaphor for those who struggle with the all-consuming afflictions of the mind.

Over the weekend at WonderCon, producer James Wan unveiled the first trailer for a great looking new horror thriller called Lights Out. They brought Wan on board to help in the process, and it looks like they came up with something incredibly fun, creepy, and inventive.

During this year's WonderCon New Line Cinema released the trailer for thier upcoming horror flick Lights Out, starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander Dipersia, with Billy Burke and Maria Bello.

The Conjuring sequel isn’t the only horror movie coming out from Warner Bros. and James Wan this summer. Directed by David F. Sandberg and produced by James Wan, Lights Out is heading to theaters on July 22nd, and the first trailer is now available online after premiering at WonderCon.

James Wan has had a busy day. Along with a new trailer for "The Conjuring 2" which he directed, a new preview is out for the horror project "Lights Out" which he produced.

Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander Dipersia, Billy Burke and Maria Bello star in the film about a young woman who realises her brother is now experiencing the same childhood terror she experienced when the lights would go out in her home - all tied back to a frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother. The film opens on July 22nd.

Ah, the TV movie. That last bastion of campy shlock and overly sentimental schmaltz that allows out of work TV actors the chance to return to the medium that made them a star. But what is a fan of the camp to do when two air on the same night? How does one choose? With Sunday night's (April 21) traffic jam of "Lovestruck: The Musical" on ABC Family and "Remember Sunday" on ABC, only one can claim victory and earn your attention in 2013's first Battle of the TV Movie.

"Drifting," Diego Luna's English-language directorial debut premiered online earlier this week via the YouTube page of Chivas Regal. The short is the first in a two-part collaboration between Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, that follows three friends, played by Pablo Cruz, Ari Brickmann, and Alexander Dipersia, who attempt to reignite their connection with reality, and each other, through a surprise visit before one's impending marriage. The films were produced by production company Canana, co-founded by Bernal, Luna, and Cruz, and Chivas Regal. The two films mark the first ones produced by Canana since their 2012 release "No," starring Bernal, that recently received an Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film.
