Jennifer Lopez starred in the world premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, realizing a career-long aspiration to perform in a musical film. The Bill Condon-directed feature received a standing ovation at its Sunday night screening at the Eccles Theatre.
The film blends two contrasting storylines: a gritty prison drama set in 1983 Argentina and a vibrant Hollywood musical. It follows Luis Molina, a gay window dresser imprisoned on morals charges, and his cellmate Valentin Arregui, a Marxist revolutionary.
Condon reimagined the 1992 Broadway musical by creating a single fictional film within the narrative. This approach allowed Lopez to showcase her talents in elaborate musical numbers, including a Marilyn Monroe-inspired dance sequence.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez said after the screening, recalling her childhood inspiration from watching “West Side Story” with her mother. The film represents a technical triumph,...

There can be no question the Broadway musicals of John Kander and Fred Ebb have been charmed when it comes to movie adaptations. Bob Fosse’s 1972 film reinvention of Cabaret won eight Oscars. Director Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon’s cinematic interpretation of Chicago in 2002 is still the last musical to win the Best Picture Oscar. Both made the musical format work, even for those who hate movie musicals, by integrating the songs so they don’t collide with the narrative but seamlessly fit in with it.

One of Wicked's most iconic songs included a subtle reference to Dorothy Gale, a character who is expected to appear in the franchise's upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good. Wicked has exceeded expectations in terms of success, and critics reviewing Wicked have praised the performances, soundtrack, and references to the Broadway musical. Winning the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Wicked has become a global phenomenon and has quickly risen to become one of the most acclaimed musical movies of all time.
Loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, originally written by L. Frank Baum. Director Jon M. Chu's adaptation explores how Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) rose to become the Wicked Witch of the West, the most feared and hated figure throughout Oz, and the events that took place in the Emerald City before Dorothy Gale arrived.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Wicked director Jon M. Chu gave a hilarious response to a question about the movie's choreography. In the clip, Chu watches a pre-recorded question from friend and colleague Lin-Manuel Miranda, who playfully shades the director of copying some moves from In the Heights. Referring to the salon sequence in the song "One Short Day," Miranda calls the nail choreography "suspiciously familiar" to the nail choreography from In the Heights.
Chu laughs at the video comment from Miranda and confirms the scene as an homage, crediting Chris Scott, who was the choreographer for both Wicked and In The Heights. The director elaborates by saying how they like to include "little nods" or references to their past works in new projects. You can watch the interview clip here. Chu continues:

Wicked has become a massive hit since it hit theaters in late November. The movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, has already made a huge splash at the box office, racking up over $580 million worldwide. It’s still climbing, showing no signs of slowing down. Critics are loving it, too, with an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% approval rating from audiences.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who play Glinda and Elphaba, are also getting attention, with Golden Globe nominations for their performances. The movie has Oscar buzz already, and we’re only just getting started.
But while the first part is still rocking theaters, we’re already hearing a lot about the second part, which is set to come out in November 2025. It was initially called Wicked: Part Two, but now it’s been renamed Wicked: For Good. The new title is a nod to one of the emotional...

Wicked choreographer Christopher Scott breaks down the behind-the-scenes process of the Ozdust Ballroom dance between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera). Up to this point in Wicked's story, the two characters have been at odds with each other. That changes when Galinda, who has not yet changed her name to Glinda, joins Elphaba and dances with her at the Ozdust Ballroom. By following Elphaba's lead when she is being mocked and dancing with her, it is a genuine moment of connection that forever bonds Elphaba and Glinda.
While speaking with ScreenRant's Rachel Foertsch, Scott was asked about the emotions he wanted to portray when choreographing the dance. Scott emphasized that the focus was always on what would feel real and what would make sense at that moment for Elphaba and Glinda. “Wicked” choreographer Christopher Scott used to escape to the movies as a kid. When his family moved from Maryland to Los Angeles, Scott would head to the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood to work out his angst.
“I’d take my ticket stub, and they would let me back in, so I paid once, but I saw it probably 10 times,” Scott tells Variety, recalling the summer of 1998 when he religiously watched (and rewatched) “Blade” starring Wesley Snipes. “Any time I was frustrated, I would just go. That was my outlet.”
So, when “Wicked” debuted in theaters last month, Scott strolled back into that famed cinema.
“I could feel my younger self in that theater, dealing with those emotions and remembering how powerful this stuff can really be,” Scott recalls. “This was my sanctuary, and now I’m watching my choreography on screen. And I have a cameo. When I popped up on screen,...

Ariana Grande was not going to let the original Wicked song “Popular” turn into a hip-hop version.
Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist of the original Broadway show — which debuted in 2003 and is now a hit feature film from Universal — wanted to change Glinda’s big song for the movie version. Onstage, “Popular” has been performed with two beds and features Glinda’s high-pitched voice and bubbly personality as she fixes Elphaba’s hair and shows her how to flirt. But, Schwartz wanted to try something new for the film, in which Ariana Grande plays Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba.
“In the spirit of being open to new things for the movie, my music team and I thought, let’s refresh the rhythm. Let’s, maybe, I don’t know, hip-hop it up a little bit,” Schwartz told the Los Angeles Times. However, he recalled Grande rejected the idea saying,...

Production designer Nathan Crowley has been waiting his entire career for a film in which he could build an entire fantasy world. He found that with “Wicked.”
When director Jon M. Chu called on him to work on “Wicked” for the film adaption of the Broadway musical, Crowley’s dream came true. “Jon wanted it to be fantastical. He wanted it to be joyous. He wanted it to be happy, and the Emerald City had to be this magical myth of the place that everyone wanted to get the ticket to.”

Director Jon M Chu’s musical adaptation features two incredible central performances and songs to die for. Here’s our Wicked review.
Before we get into the review itself, let’s address the elephant in the room. Yes, Jon M Chu’s Wicked is 160 minutes long and only covers half of the stage show despite being 20 minutes longer. Did it need to do this? I’m relatively confident in saying that at the end of the movie, you’ll come to the same conclusion as I: it absolutely did.
Wicked begins where The Wizard Of Oz ends. The Wicked Witch of the West is dead and all is well in Munchkinland. One of the Munchkins asks Glinda The Good (Ariana Grande) if it’s true that she and the witch were once friends, prompting Glinda to tell their story.
If you’re familiar with the stage musical, you’ll know what’s coming.

The movie version of Broadway’s beloved musical Wicked has been a long time coming since the show’s opening in 2003, but it is finally here — and quite frankly, not only does it soar cinematically, it exceeds all expectations. What director Jon M. Chu does here ranks with the best movie musicals, an innovative and quite stunning take that will not disappoint even the hardest-core lovers of the stage version. And this is only Part One (more on that later).

Derek Hough continues his reign as one of the lords of the dance, scoring three nominations for the just-unveiled World Choreography Awards (sister Julianne Hough also makes a showing this year).
His nominations include ABC’s “Step Into…the Movies” special as well as their long-running “Dancing with the Stars,” and also Hough’s work on the music video for Michael Bublé’s “Higher.” However, married choreographers Phillip and Makenzie Chbeeb, also scored three noms each, including one with Hough for the “Higher” video, as well as for the “Zed Ramadan” TV commercial and ABC’s recent “Beauty and The Beast” anniversary special.
Jamal Sims, nominated for three Emmys this year in the choreography categories for his various projects—including Paramount+’s “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies“—garnered two nods, including his work on Netflix’s “13 the Musical” and the live “Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl.”

When production designer Nelson Coates first saw Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” Broadway musical in 2008, he was so “blown away” that he immediately bought tickets to two more performances. He vowed to be a part of any movie adaption of this Latin celebration of music, dance, and community in Washington Heights. But he played coy during the making of “Crazy Rich Asians,” when director Jon M. Chu asked if he’d like to join him on “In the Heights.” “I didn’t tell him how much I really wanted the job until we did the series, ‘Home Before Dark,’ when he said: ‘You dork.'”
But their previous collaboration on the Asian-American rom-com hit proved to be a valuable springboard for transforming Washington Heights into a playground for each musical number. “So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Christopher Scott “dances through life” — and finds inspiration for his routines along the way.
The choreographer earned his third Emmy nomination this year for two of his routines on the longstanding Fox reality dance series, and explained in a recent interview with TheWrap that the inspiration for them often comes from real-life experiences, even if they’re a little unexpected.
In the nominated group routine “Prism,” Scott found inspiration in a particularly unlikely source: his friend’s dog, who was recently being trained to sit, stay and speak.

“I was having a moment watching this process and how proud he was [after he] got his dog to listen to him,” Scott said of his friend. “It made me think about how trained we are as human beings.

On “So You Think You Can Dance” it’s expected that you’ll hear the judges criticize the contestants’ performances — point your toes, extend your arms, more hip action! But on Monday night’s show when the Top 8 performed judge Nigel Lythgoe turned his criticisms toward choreographer Jaci Royal. He thought she made a mistake by creating a contemporary routine for Darius Hickman and Magda Fialek where he felt the prop work (a symbolic rope connecting the two dancers) overshadowed the dance content. Did you agree? Watch the performance above to decide for yourself.
The rest of the judges definitely weren’t on the same page. Hickman and Fialek got rave reviews from the other three panelists, and so did Royal’s choreography. Also, it wasn’t like this was the only routine during the show that incorporated props. It wasn’t even the only routine that incorporated ropes; the...

I don’t think anyone would mistake So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season as its strongest — aside from viewers who were trapped in some sort of Footloose-esque, no-grooving-allowed nightmare for its first 11.
But while the Great Stage-Vs.-Street/Jason Derulo-Vs.-Descriptive-Adjectives Experiment of 2015 lacked something in diversity (whatever happened to ballroom and disco?), gut-busting emotional concepts (what I wouldn’t have given for one routine on par with “Addiction Dance“) and insightful critique (Mary Murphy and Misty Copeland, I missed you!), I’d be lying if I said summer TV still wasn’t the better for it.

I don't know about you, dance fans, but I really have only one thing to say: Whew! Totally excellent results. The "Dancing with the Stars" results are a huge surprise, but I'm fine with them. But let's talk a bit about the rest of the show first.
I'll be honest, most of this show feels like filler to me. The results shows often do, but I don't care much for most of the performances tonight. The "Almay Simply American Experience" routine has some fun choreography in it, but I do not like the singer's raspy, shouting voice at all. The VFX crew has way too much fun with the "Women of DWTS" routine, turning them all into robots and holographic images, but the dancing is mostly strutting and posing, drawing an extremely thin line between choreography and objectification. The "Teen Beach 2" number is very cute - and I have to confess,...

Guilty Pleasure. It’s a term I dislike immensely. Why feel guilty about enjoying anything? If you like some, you like something, end of. Another reason I dislike the term guilty pleasure is because the term, at least in movie-related circles, has become synonymous with any movie that is hailed as worthy of critical discussion. Adam Sandler movies are guilty pleasures. The Fast & Furious franchise is (apparently) considered guilty pleasures by some. F that. I like Adam Sandler’s movies, I like the Fast & Furious movies (hell, I’d even go and say I love those!).

The first round of 2014 Emmy Awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday (August 16) night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which precedes the Monday, August 25 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, offered signs of hope for a number of drama and comedy hopefuls. Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black," for example, won Emmys for editing, series casting and for Uzo Aduba, who is considered a guest actress for the purposes of these awards. No other comedy series was able to build any other momentum going into next week's show, with "The Big Bang Bang Theory," "Nurse Jackie," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" grabbing isolated tech prizes and Jimmy Fallon winning the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for the second time in three years for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting duties. It’s time.
Yes, it’s Emmy time. But it’s also time for the Outstanding Host of a Reality or Reality-Competition Program to finally go to the host that, in my opinion, is long overdue to take the statuette home. That host is Cat Deeley, who has been bringing her charm, quick thinking and infectious enthusiasm to her So You Think You Can Dance for nine seasons now.
The British-born Deeley has been nominated the past three years (with Survivor’s Jeff Probst winning in 2011 and Dancing With The Stars’ Tom Bergeron taking it home last year) and when she spoke to me in her dressing room after a recent taping, we made sure to talk about what it means for her to be nominated.
