Brut Post TikTok Subscriber Milestone
France’s young adult-focused, online news-skewed platform Brut is sounding its own bell after hitting 10 million subscribers on TikTok, making it the top French publisher on the Chinese-owned platform. The subscriber gains also make the platform the second most followed European news publisher on TikTok after the Daily Mail. “Making news on TikTok was a challenge. A successful bet with 10 million subscribers, which makes us the leading news media in France on a platform historically focused on entertainment,” said TikTok Editor in Chief Laurent Lucas in a release. “This symbolic milestone reflects the success of an editorial policy developed especially for new uses of information consumption in France and around the world.” Launched by Guillaume Lacroix and Renaud le Van Kim in 2016, the Paris-based platform employs some 250 people. It has had its financial ups and down over its existence but reported last year that it...

In what was a massive year for animation between box office blockbusters like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the critically acclaimed The Boy and the Heron, one of the genre’s last titles of 2023 is looking to take flight at the holiday box office this week. Stepping away from its usual fever-paced big-budget styles seen in previous Illumination features like Despicable Me, the wholesome new animated feature Migration embraces its big duck energy for some very heartwarming family fare this season. With this year’s Christmas Day roster not including much for kids, the animated feature starring Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, and Keegan-Michael Key from Oscar-nominated filmmaker and cartoonist, Benjamin Renner, modifies that with a joyfully thoughtful and touching addition to the festive variety that is a sincere blast for all ages.

The New York International Children’s Film Festival (Nyicff) has officially selected its 2024 winners.
The jury, which consisted of Ira Sachs, Ilana Glazer, Uma Thurman, and more A-listers, announced short films “Magic Candies” and “Unibrow” as the two selections. Daisuke Nishio’s “Magic Candies” is an animated short and had its world premiere at the festival, where Nedda Sarshar’s “Unibrow” is live-action; both are now Oscar-qualifying. All jurors voted on both awards.
Juror Ilana Glazer called “Unibrow” a “universal” story even given its specificity. “Told viscerally with a full palette of emotions, ‘Unibrow’ is an example of excellent storytelling,” Glazer said.
Fellow juror Benjamin Renner called “Magic Candies” an “absolute delight” of a short film.
The Nyicff audience awards were determined by the votes of viewers aged three to 17, as well as audience members aged 18+ for adult-centric awards. The Grand Prize for an Animated Feature was awarded to “Kensuke’s Kingdom,...

Elizabeth Banks wants a 'Migration' sequel. The Benjamin Renner-directed Illuminations animation about a group of ducks getting lost in New York City has just hit cinemas, and the 49-year-old actress would love to return for a European adventure as the quick-witted Pam Mallard. She told RadioTimes.com: "Oh, we're going to Europe. You know, that's the next… we're definitely doing the Mediterranean, I think.”Whether or not a second film is in the works remains unknown. The star-studded voice cast also includes Kumail Nanjiani, Keegan-Michael Key, Awkwafina, David Mitchell, and Danny DeVito. The plot for the flick is: "In a New England forest, Mack Mallard constantly discourages his kids Dax and Gwen from venturing into the outside world much to the displeasure of his wife Pam."One day, the Mallards meet a flock of migrating ducks who are en route south to Jamaica which the family finds interesting, but Mack has no such interest.

If you pay attention to the box office even a little bit, or even if you're just a moviegoer hoping to find something new to watch at your local multiplex, you've probably noticed that there hasn't been all that much on offer over the last few weeks. "The Beekeeper," "Mean Girls," and "Night Swim" are truly the only mass-appeal, wide-release movies we've had through the entire month of January (all due respect to "I.S.S."). As a result, several 2023 holdovers are still pulling in money nearly two months later, with Universal and Illumination's "Migration" benefitting greatly from the sheer lack of product in the marketplace.
This past weekend, the animated original feature pulled in $4.9 million, which was good enough to give it the number four spot on the charts. This is the movie's sixth weekend in theaters and here it is, able to easily stay in the domestic top five with...

Illumination Entertainment is an animation studio that sort of came out of nowhere. Led by founder and producer Chris Meledandri, the studio jumped at the scene with "Despicable Me," which remains a rather fun family movie with a cool concept (created by "Klaus" director Sergio Pablos). It also gave the world the phenomenon that is the Minions — whether that's good or bad is up to the reader to decide.
In just 17 years, the studio has found a formula that it's honed to produce some of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time, with quite the high batting average thanks to their focus on hit songs and broad humor. After the enormous success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination took a hard left turn and gave us a movie that's unlike any it had done before — "Migration."

“There’s that great old quote about Hollywood: ‘No one knows anything,’ ” says Kemp Powers. “Yet everyone acts like they know everything. I get particularly frustrated by some of these trends, because they selectively omit things that don’t validate their thesis,” admits Powers, one of the trio of directors behind Sony Pictures Animation sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which made $690.5 million at the worldwide box office. “There’s always a selective omission. Apparently no one wants to see any superhero movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did pretty damn well, too, with superheroes.”
Seth Rogen, one of the writers and producers of Paramount and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (and the voice of Bebop) agrees, pushing back against a perception that family and animated movies might not yet have recovered from the pandemic. “Good movies prevail, period,” he asserts.

As 2023 came to a close, a pair of animated movies — Aardman and Netflix’s Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Illumination/Universal’s Migration — delivered stories featuring carefully designed chickens and mallards, respectively, that leaned into simplicity to be expressive.
Dawn of the Nugget is the sequel to famed British animation studio Aardman’s 2000 stop-motion hit Chicken Run, which was directed by studio co-founder Peter Lord and four-time Academy Award winner and Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park, who designed the original flock. “He came up with this aesthetic, which is very simple. And if you look at Wallace & Gromit and then look at the chickens, they have this in common. They’re not very mobile. The chickens are kind of like bottle shapes with arms and legs,” says Lord. “Then they have this quite exaggerated mouth. Nick came up with this idea that lip sync was best served...

Migration surpasses $100 million at the global box office, a 40% increase from its opening weekend. Despite a weak start, Migration has a chance to continue growing due to its holiday season release. Migration faces tough competition from other successful films, but its recent milestone marks the beginning of a potential comeback.

The 2023 Christmas season was a crowded one at the box office. "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," the rom-com "Anyone But You," and A24's acclaimed wrestling drama "The Iron Claw" all opened heading into the weekend, with "The Color Purple," Michael Mann's "Ferrari," and George Clooney's "The Boys in the Boat" arriving on Christmas Day. Moviegoers had plenty to choose from. Amidst all of this, Universal and Illumination unleashed an original animated film in the form of "Migration." Unfortunately, it didn't make as big of a splash as many in the industry were hoping it would.
Director Benjamin Renner's "Migration" had to settle for third place on its opening weekend behind "Aquaman" ($27.7 million) and "Wonka" ($18 million), taking in $12.4 million, per The Numbers. When adding in its Christmas haul, the film's domestic total stands at $17.8 million. It has also pulled in $21.9 million overseas thus far, giving it a...

‘Twas the weekend before Christmas and all through the theaters, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” was the box office leader.
The latest and final entry in the current iteration of the DC Comics universe got off to a less-than-splashy start with $13.7 million on opening day across 3,706 locations — getting a boost from showtimes in premium large format auditoriums like Imax. It’s a downtick from the original “Aquaman,” which posted a $27.7 million opening day around the holidays in 2018.
The writing’s been on the wall for a while with the Warner Bros. release, with the studio seemingly having moved on as James Gunn prepares his reboot of DC Comics properties with “Superman: Legacy.” Even star Jason Momoa has stated that “it’s not looking too good” for his potential future as the King of Atlantis — hardly the encouraging rhetoric usually seen in a promotional junket. In a year in which The Boy and the Heron opened at #1 and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse pushed the boundaries of animation, Migration might seem a bit stuck in the past. The latest offering from Illumination – the Minions folks – is yet another family story of anthropomorphized animals on a road trip, but its warmth and humor make it a perfectly acceptable holiday distraction.
Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) and Pam (Elizabeth Banks) are mallards content raising their two ducklings – Dax and Gwen – on the same pond, year after year. Mack is overprotective, happy to keep the kids close by by telling them scary stories about life outside the pond. But when a group of migrating ducks inspires Pam and the kids, Mack tries to prove he’s fun and adventurous by organizing a spur-of-the-moment migration to Jamaica.

A family of ducks ends up on the adventure of a lifetime when they decide to head south for the winter in Illumination’s animated film Migration.
Mack Mallard (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) is an overprotective father who has found the perfect place to raise his two young ducklings, Dax and Gwen (voiced by Caspar Jennings and Tresi Gazal), alongside his wife, Pam (voiced by Elizabeth Banks). It’s a lovely, safe area known as Moosehead Lake and has everything they could ever need, including a pond, plenty of food, and even a fixer-up shelter.
The only problem? Pam, Dax, and even little Gwen are starting to become curious about what exists outside their little world. When a group of migrating ducks takes a rest stop at the pond, Pam and Dax strike up a conversation. The Moosehead Lake duck...

Illumination's CGI adventure film Migration is gorgeously animated and takes the audience on a thrilling journey with a tight-knit family of mallards. The film's characters, particularly the adorable little sister Gwen, are wonderfully written by the great Mike White. Director Benjamin Renner delivers breathtaking visuals as the birds explore stunning new environments, including an impressive depiction of Manhattan.
The production studio Illumination soars to creative new heights with a hilarious CGI adventure that's beautifully animated. Migration stars a tight-knit family of mallards who've spent their entire lives sheltered in a pond. They decide to throw caution to the wind and follow a flock of birds to the ultimate island getaway — drumroll please — Jamaica. But getting to the aviary paradise proves much harder than expected with crazy obstacles and a psychotic chef hot on their feathers. They'll need new friends and a lot of courage or risk becoming Duck à l'Orange for dinner.

Benjamin Renner's animated film Migration avoids pandering to adults and delivers a sincere and charming story with the help of a smart screenplay by Mike White. While the storytelling in Migration doesn't take many risks, the visuals and relationship dynamics elevate the film and make moments of surprise feel earned. Despite its obvious central thesis, Migration concludes in a heartwarming and creative fashion, offering thoughtful lessons for young viewers without sacrificing entertainment value.
I had my qualms going into Migration, as animated movies aimed at kids can sometimes be cloying in their attempts to pander to parents and other adults. Director Benjamin Renner — who also shares credit for the story — avoids this pitfall by opting for a more straightforward sincerity, aided by Mike White's (of The White Lotus and School of Rock fame) smart screenplay. Benjamin Renner’s new comedy Migration offers a winning combination of a charming narrative and distinctive animation style. The film, which was written by White Lotus creator Mike White, is a tale of how a family of mallards embarks on an inspired journey from New England to Jamaica.
The Mallards, as they are aptly named, are a quartet of ducks living in a quiet pond somewhere in the Northeast. As in Renner’s striking 2012 animation Ernest & Celestine, Migration begins at bedtime. We meet Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) as he narrates a chilling story to his ducklings, Dax (Casper Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), about the dangers of leaving their nest. He weaves an energetic tale about predatory herons and other monsters ready to devour adventure-seeking ducks. His stories have a fantastical edge to them — the preferred posture of overprotective parents. And they are brought to life by vivid 2D animations. There...

His stories have a fantastical edge to them — the preferred posture of overprotective parents. And they are brought to life by vivid 2D animations. There...

In a medium where stop-motion chickens organize elaborate escape plans, computer-generated ducks have to do a lot more than relocate to amuse us. Illumination’s “Migration” — about a fussy duck dad who reluctantly reconsiders his fear of flying — is a cartoon in search of a concept, where the most daring idea is hiring the Oscar-nominated co-director of 2012’s “Ernest & Celestine” and asking him to abandon that movie’s unique watercolor style in favor of a relatively standard digital approach. At least the backgrounds are eye-catching, as a waddle of mallards crack jokes amid beautiful fall foliage.
In the opening scene, director Benjamin Renner teases what “Migration” might have looked like had Illumination honcho Chris Meledandri let him stick to his signature aesthetic, rather than bend it to the studio’s house style: Emerald-headed, overprotective Mack tells his kids, Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal), scary bedtime stories so...

Illumination is a rare animation studio, in that they have landed upon a formula for the majority of their films and they seem perfectly content in hewing to that formula no matter what stories are being told. The studio thrives on mid-budget films that bring together a recognizable ensemble, some pop songs, and stories that feel vaguely cribbed from Pixar Animation Studios without being out-and-out plagiarism. Illumination, like DreamWorks, also leans heavily on turning its films into lengthy franchises, which has given us the obnoxious and leaden "Despicable Me" series (including its multiple "Minions" spin-offs), the obnoxious and leaden "Sing" films, and the obnoxious and leaden "The Secret Life of Pets" films. For this holiday season, Illumination is trying to do another original film, but much like the first "Secret Life of Pets", the new film "Migration" is original in name only, while feeling like a flavorless mishmash of "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille.

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination animation house has had a boatload of hits from Despicable Me and Minions to 2023’s global smash The Super Mario Bros Movie. But in between, this underrated (in terms of awards) producer of delightful and genuinely funny toons creates new franchises by embracing originals such as The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, winners both in my book. Now, just in time for the holidays, comes Migration, about a family of ducks on the adventure of a lifetime. It is the kind of animated entertainment that all ages will find something to like, and in terms of the creative talent involved, it is a breath of fresh air in the genre.

Migration is a new direction for Illumination, focusing more on character-driven comedy and emotional storytelling. The film features an ensemble cast including Kumail Nanjiani, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key. The story follows a family of mallards who mistakenly migrate to New York City and must find a way to reach the Caribbean.

Migration Interview: Elizabeth Banks & Kumail Nanjiani On Making An Animated Movie During A Pandemic
Illumination's latest film, Migration, showcases a more developed and fully realized set of characters, unlike their previous works featuring the beloved Minions. The humor in Migration stems from the characterization of the Mallard family rather than relying on pop culture references or lowbrow antics, providing a refreshing throwback to the Disney Renaissance era. Screen Rant's interview with Elizabeth Banks and Kumail Nanjiani reveals their experiences in voice acting for Migration, discussing the unique process and challenges they faced, such as working independently in a booth during the pandemic.

Illumination's new animated movie, Migration, is the first original film from the studio since 2016's Sing, creating interest in the project. Migration will have an exclusive theatrical release starting on December 22, 2023, allowing audiences to experience the film in 3D. While the exact streaming and digital release dates for Migration have not been confirmed, it is expected to debut on Peacock in April 2024 and be available for home viewing around February 2024.
Illumination is back with another animated movie, and determining where to watch Migration, either at home or in theaters, depends on a few factors. The second animated movie from Illumination in 2023 follows a family of mallards as they attempt to travel from New England to Jamaica for a magnificent vacation. Migration is directed by Benjamin Renner and features a rather star-studded voice cast that includes Kumail Nanjiani, Keegan-Michael Key, Elizabeth Banks, Awkwafina, and Danny DeVito. The film arrived months after The Super Mario Bros.

Illumination’s upcoming adventure comedy Migration is doing well at theinternational box office. The movie opened in 8 markets and grossed $5.2 million for a cume of $12.3 million globally. This looks like a promising start for the animated comedy which stands only next to features like Timothee Chalamet-led Wonka. The film directed by Benjamin Renner sees a family of mallards who decides to fly to Jamaica in the migration season.

“Wonka,” a look at how the famous chocolatier Willy Wonka honed his ability to satisfy a sweet tooth, opened to $43.2 million to top the international box office. The fantasy film stars Timothée Chalamet in the title role and opens domestically next weekend.
The Warner Bros. release got off to a hot start overseas, debuting in 37 markets, including Spain, Germany, Mexico, Japan and the U.K. — “Wonka’s” $11.1 million start in the latter country is the studio’s second-biggest opening of the year, ranking just behind “Barbie.” Like many recent Hollywood films, “Wonka” struggled in China, earning a measly $3.2 million. The studio noted that outbreaks of the flu and a cold front across much of the country may have depressed ticket sales. In addition to the U.S., the film will debut in 40 more international markets next weekend.

A broad range of titles, animation styles and plenty of music define this season’s animated feature race, with some expected contenders still to debut.
For instance, as the studio celebrates its centennial, Walt Disney Animation Studios hopes to grab one of the five nomination slots with its Nov. 22 musical Wish, which tells the story of how Disney’s wishing star came to be. Its voice cast is led by Ariana DeBose as young protagonist Asha and Chris Pine as villainous King Magnifico. The cast performs a collection of original songs from Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, including “This Wish,” “I’m a Star” and “This Is the Thanks I Get.” Oscar winner Chris Buck (Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn direct, and Disney Animation chief creative officer and Oscar winner Jennifer Lee is a writer and executive producer.

Hopefully, you’ve already read this week’s weekend movie preview, so you know that “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” “Godzilla Minus One,” the revenge thriller “Silent Night” and more will be opening on this slow weekend coming up, so we can focus on the rest of the month, including the lucrative weeks around Christmas Day.
Oddly, the top three movies for the rest of the month might all be from the same studio, which is something fairly unheard of, even and especially during the holidays. Read on for Gold Derby’s December 2023 box office preview.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (Warner Bros. – Dec. 22)
Jason Momoa returns with this “Justice League” superhero in the sequel to the DC movie that opened with $67.8 million almost exactly five years ago and ended up making $1.1 billion globally, not bad for a superhero that’s often been treated as a joke on “Saturday Night Live” to “Entourage.

Illumination Studios will release its new feature film Migration in December along with the short film Mooned, featuring the return of the beloved villain Vector from the Despicable Me series. The original Despicable Me film was a major hit, achieving a remarkable 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning over $543 million globally, leading to sequels and a prequel series. The inclusion of the short film Mooned before Migration is a strategic move by Illumination Studios to leverage the popularity of an established character and draw in audiences for their new feature, showcasing their commitment to quality entertainment and understanding of audience preferences.

The cinematic universe just got a little more exciting with the release of the official trailer for “Mooned,” a sci-fi short film that’s set to play before the animated adventure “Migration.” This short film is an intriguing blend of humor and cosmic mystery, featuring the return of Vector, the memorable villain from the first “Despicable Me” movie.
“Mooned” is a creative venture by Universal and Illumination, focusing on what happened to Vector after he was marooned on the Moon. Fans of the franchise will recall that Vector, voiced by Jason Segel, met this lunar fate at the hands of Gru in the series’ first installment. This short film, spanning just under 9 minutes, aims to answer the long-standing question: What has Vector been up to all this time?
In a surprising twist, the Minions, voiced by Pierre Coffin, are also stuck with Vector, adding their unique brand of humor to the mix.

Illumination’s upcoming film Migration is a comedy about a family of ducks trying to fly from New York to Jamaica. Writer-director Benjamin Renner makes his 3D animation debut, and John Powell wrote the score for his film. Renner told the audience Saturday at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event that Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri assured him he could pick up 3D animation on the job.
“When I do 2D, basically I have a blank page,” Renner said. “I start to draw lines. I stop as soon as what I want to express is there on paper. If I want to draw a duck, I draw three lines. Some call it minimalistic. I call it lazy.”
Renner said he found the difference between 3D and 2D is that 2D is additive, where 3D is subtractive. There are so many elements, including texture, lighting and shading, that Renner found the...

For Migration, composer John Powell was tasked with creating a theme for a reluctant hero that evolves throughout his journey. Written and directed by Benjamin Renner, Migration follows a family of ducks on a new journey. Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) is a mallard who is content with never leaving the safety of his pond, until his wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) convinces him that their children need to see the world. Setting their sights on Jamaica, Mack takes his family on a trip south that quickly goes wrong. As they overcome new challenges and meet new friends, the family discovers they are capable of much more than they thought. As Mack’s attitude towards migrating changes throughout the film, Powell’s theme for the character became grander to match his growth.

Fall is in full swing, and before you know it, winter will arrive and flocks of birds will embark on their journey south for their migration. Illumination Studios is following up their Minions series and the new video game adaptation smash hit, The Super Mario Bros. The official synopsis from Illumination reads,
