I Refuse To Believe This Robert De Niro Movie Isn't A Secret Meet The Parents Remake
Image
In more ways than one, a Robert De Niro movie comes off as the perfect remake of Meet the Parents. Helmed by Jay Roach, Meet the Parents is actually a remake of a 1992 film of the same name directed by Greg Glienna. The film was initially supposed to be directed by Steven Spielberg, with Jim Carrey playing the lead role. However, when it later went to Jay Roach after Spielberg and Carrey dropped out of the project, Ben Stiller was taken aboard to play the iconic main character, Greg Focker.

When the film premiered in October 2000, it was an instant hit, raking in over $330 million against a budget of $55 million. Its success spawned two sequels, Meet the Fockers and Little Fockers, and even inspired television shows like Meet the Folks. Despite its success, Meet the Parents has never been remade. However, after watching one Robert De Niro movie, I cannot...

'About My Father' director: 'Kim Cattrall is one of the funniest women on the planet'
Image
‘About My Father’ director Laura Terruso has spoken about the cast of the comedy film and said that he found Kim Cattrall as one of the funniest women on the planet. Cattrall plays Tigger Collins. Back on the digital front with ‘About My Father’, which is set to stream exclusively on August 18 on Lionsgate Play in India, Kim showcases her versatility by playing a headstrong character with a soft side.

Terruso said: “Casting is the single most important part of making a comedy and to have Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco playing opposite each other and then to have supporting them, Kim Cattrall – who is one of the funniest women on the planet.”

“David Rasche is a genius in his own right, even Anders Holm, Brett Dier.. Leslie Bibb, is just the ultimate dream woman for Sebastian and they have such incredible chemistry and I think that chemistry is everything in a comedy.

‘About My Father’ (2023) Movie Review
About My Father is a comedy film starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro, directed by Laura Terruso.

The movie is a pleasant comedy that tries to be pure comedy but falls short in terms of humor and sentimentality.

Robert De Niro plays his role well, although it feels like he’s parodying himself once again.

Sebastian Maniscalco, known for his excellent Netflix stand-up comedy, brings some humor to the film with his Brooklyn-style parodies.

Storyline

The plot revolves around Sebastian, whose fiancée encourages him to bring her father, Salvo, an immigrant and a barber, to a weekend gathering with her wealthy and eccentric family. The weekend turns into a cultural clash, during which Sebastian and Salvo discover that the best thing about the family is everything related to family.

About My Father The Movie

The film is a parody of Italian-Americans, Americans… and everything that moves on the screen.

‘Glamorous’ Trailer: Kim Cattrall Gets Her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ Moment in Netflix Queer Comedy Series
Image
Netflix’s upcoming series “Glamorous” is like “The Devil Wears Prada” if Meryl Streep were replaced by “Sex and the City’s” Kim Cattrall and instead of Anne Hathaway, she hired drag queens and non-binary actor Miss Benny to work for her. The 10-episode LGBTQ comedy series premieres June 22 on the streamer.

“Glamorous” follows baby-faced new hire Marco Mejia (Miss Benny), a young, queer man who lands a job for the legendary CEO Madolyn Addison (Cattrall). Madolyn’s makeup line, Glamorous Cosmetics, is plummeting. Suspecting her business is being sabotaged by someone on the inside, she hires Marco to sleuth around.

“She wants him to be her eyes and ears, to make friends — and find out what’s going on behind her back, to discover what they’re hiding and what they’re stealing. In exchange, she’ll teach Marco everything she knows – but she warns him, ‘This business isn’t all glitter and glamour,...

The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Sebastian Maniscalco auditioned for the role of Mario before landing Spike
Image
Mama Mia! In an alternate timeline, Chris Pratt never voiced Mario in Illumination and Nintendo‘s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. How is this possible? The role could have gone to About My Father actor and comedian Sebastian Maniscalco! Speaking with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live With Kelly and Mark, Maniscalco told the duo he auditioned for the Mario role before joining the cast as Spike, Mario and Luigi’s former boss in the film. While Maniscalco didn’t get the chance to play Mario, he says his version of the character is closer to the voice used by Charles Martinet in the video game franchise.

“Everybody was like, ‘How come they didn’t cast an Italian American for the role?’ So I read for Mario, and I went in there and I did the whole, ‘It’s a’me, Mario!’ And then they said, ‘We’re gonna give you Spike.

About My Father Review: Maniscalco & De Niro Make A Good Pair In Hollow Comedy
Image
Directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl, About My Father has a fun, trope-y premise that somehow doesn’t land, and a fantastic cast can’t save it. It’s hard to come by a really good comedy these days, and though About My Father has its moments, its humor and story never reach the heights they were perhaps aiming for. At times sweet and occasionally funny, the film leaves a lot to be desired despite a stellar cast, and is an exercise in wasted potential.

Sebastian (Maniscalco) was raised by his working class immigrant parents. He always saw his father, Salvo (Robert De Niro), as his hero growing up. As an adult, Sebastian and his father don’t always see eye to eye, but there’s still love there. When Sebastian decides he’s ready to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Ellie...

About My Father Ending Explained
Image
Warning: This post contains spoilers for About My Father

About My Father’s ending gets sentimental as it unites Sebastian and Ellie’s families. Directed by Laura Terruso from a screenplay by Austen Earl and Sebastian Maniscalco, who also stars, About My Father brings together two wildly different families when Maniscalco’s character decides to propose to his longtime girlfriend.

After an argument, Salvo (Robert De Niro), Sebastian’s Italian American father, leaves his mother’s ring for his son but decides to go back to Chicago. A Christmas card photoshoot goes awry after Ellie (Leslie Bibb) discovers her parents, Tigger (Kim Cattrall) and Bill (David Rasche), have been paying a third-party designer to buy her art. Following a conversation with Ellie, Sebastian realizes how lucky he is to have a father like Salvo, and hops on a helicopter to the airport to stop him from leaving. Salvo and Sebastian...

'About My Father' Director on Why Comedy Is Best Seen With An Audience
Image
We already know that About My Father is a personal film for Sebastian Maniscalco, and it serves as a love letter to his father Salvo Maniscalco, who in the film is played by Robert de Niro, but what I also found extremely fascinating while doing my research for the film was just how personal the film was to its director, Laura Terruso, who looks at the film as a love-letter to her own Silician mother. Knowing this, it's now incredibly easy to see why Maniscalco entrusted Terruso with directing his first film as a leading man.

Exclusive: Robert De Niro and Sebastian Maniscalco Are a Great Comedy Duo in About My Father
Image
Sebastian Maniscalco is soaring high these days. Sure, he’s the hottest comic in America right now, but after coming off another hit Netflix stand-up special (Is it Me?) this spring, he’s taking a bold leap to leading man status — and screenwriter — with About My Father. Think of the new film as a hilarious love letter to his Sicilian father, Salvo, a recurring subject in his popular stand-up act. That film legend and Oscar winner Robert De Niro plays Maniscalco’s father was both surreal and a dream come true for the comic.

“It's unbelievable, man. I'm pinching myself every day,” beamed Mansicalco in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb. “I'm here in my hometown of Chicago, going to a hometown screening with De Niro, and my family and friends. I mean, come on! I left here in 1998. And if you had told me I'd be doing this in 2023. I...

Robert De Niro: 'About My Father' has personal element from Sebastian's experience
Image
Hollywood star Robert De Niro, who plays the father to comedian-actor Sebastian Maniscalco in the film ‘About My Father’, has shared that the film’s story has a personal element from Sebastian’s experience.

Talking about the film and his reel life son, Robert De Niro told Ians: “I knew Sebastian, of course. Not well, but I have worked with him a little bit; had seen a couple of his shows, and worked on the ‘Irishman’ with him. So, we had a reading and then after that, I pretty much was like ‘let’s do it – just had to find the time and when to do it’.”

He further spoke about the script, as he shared: “I liked it, and saw that the script had a personal element from Sebastian’s experience, obviously. And, after getting to know Laura Terruso a little bit, I realised her background; she was from Brooklyn,...

About My Father Review
Image
Plot: The film centers around Sebastian who is encouraged by his fiancée to bring his immigrant, hairdresser father, Salvo, to a weekend get-together with her super-rich and exceedingly eccentric family. The weekend develops into what can only be described as a culture clash, leaving Sebastian and Salvo to discover that the great thing about family is everything about family.

Review: The marketing around About My Father makes a big deal about Sebastian Maniscalco being considered one of the most popular comedians in America. Maniscalco’s stand-up routine pokes fun at his immigrant family, his vastly different in-laws, and his observations about how people act. With a fair amount of profanity in his routines, Maniscalco’s brand of humor remains pretty inviting to all audiences. About My Father takes a lot of jokes and stories Maniscalco has told over the years and pulls them together into a comedy loosely inspired by his own life.

‘About My Father’ Review: Sebastian Maniscalco & Robert De Niro Team In Unfunny Generational Comedy
Image
If Sebastian Maniscalco really is the most popular comic in the country at the moment, you’d never know why from his film debut in About My Father. So unfunny it’s embarrassing, this is an over-the-top, under-achieving generational comedy that feels like it was written in the mid- to late-1960s and has been moldering in a drawer ever since.

At 79 the oldest person in the cast, Robert de Niro has the most energy of anyone in the film and employs all the tricks he could think of to help the cause. Still, this mostly plays like a ragged hand-me-down being performed at top volume, as if the dialogue was going to be competing with a laugh track.

One plausibly might presume that this lightweight vehicle was conceived and designed by Maniscalco using elements of his own upbringing so as to surround himself with reliable talent to ease his...

‘About My Father’ Review: Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro Team Up for a Superior ‘Meet the Parents’ Scenario
Image
Following a handful of supporting roles in “Tag,” “Green Book” and “The Irishman,” Sebastian Maniscalco makes his first bid for leading-man status with “About My Father,” a family comedy sourced from the same semi-autobiographical material that made his stand-up a commercial and cultural phenomenon. To say it’s better than all three “Meet the Parents” films may be a dubious compliment, but it’s one made more significant because it co-stars Robert De Niro — and more importantly, actually features recognizable human behavior amidst its suitably outlandish set pieces. Whether or not Maniscalco has a legitimate future as a movie star, he proves a likeable presence as a romantic lead, while director Laura Terruso skillfully delivers comedic payoffs that tap into his wheelhouse while introducing him to a wider audience.

Maniscalco plays “himself,” the successful, Chicago-based manager of a boutique hotel who falls for painter and artist Ellie Collins (Leslie Bibb...

‘About My Father’ Review: Robert De Niro Is an Italian American Hero in Zippy Comedy
Image
There’s no doubt that Robert De Niro is funny, but his recent taste in comedies have certainly called his sense of humor into question. It’s been over 20 years since “Analyze This” and “Meet the Parents” launched the robust comedy leg of the Oscar winner’s career, but not every subsequent project has been as successful. Following the twin head scratchers of “Dirty Grandpa” and “The War with Grandpa” (unrelated; though equally ignored), the godfather of Hollywood has finally found his comedy groove again.

And wouldn’t you know, all it took was a good, old-fashioned Italian American family farce — fittingly titled “About My Father.” Though there’s a wide swath of the public for whom De Niro can do no wrong, even giants can fall. Luckily, Sebastian Maniscalco knows the importance of family.

The marquee comedian appeared opposite De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” sealing his...

The majority of that number will be made stateside with $120M for the four-day Memorial Day weekend holiday, and around $100M over three days. Sebastian Maniscalco & Director Laura Terruso On Truth & Comedy In ‘About My Father’ – Crew Call Podcast
Image
“This was not planned,” says stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalco about his auto-biopic comedy About My Father making it to the screen.

“This is not something I had on my vision board,” he tells us on today’s Crew Call.

About My Father, directed by Laura Terruso, and written by Austen Earl and Maniscalco, follows the stand-up as he meets his posh wife’s well-to-do family. Complicating matters is Maniscalco’s salon stylist immigrant Italian father, Salvo (played by Robert De Niro) is also along for the ride.

Earl and Maniscalco bonded as both of their wives “come from a better cut of cloth” as the stand-up puts it.

How did Terruso win the job?

“She had –I don’t know what the hell it was–a power point presentation,” Maniscalco tells us, “She came in with visuals of what the wardrobe is going to be; I’m a visual guy.

Interviews: About My Father stars Robert De Niro, Sebastian Maniscalco, Kim Cattrall and more
Pete Davidson
There are quite a few comedians translating their real lives into streaming series or big-screen movies. While Pete Davidson has taken a surreal twist on his life in Bupkis and Bert Kreischer has gone full John Wick for The Machine, popular stand-up Sebastian Maniscalco has mined his hit stage show for a feature film comedy that blends the sense of humor of movies like Meet the Parents with an honest look at the importance of family and father-son relationships.

In About My Father, Sebastian Maniscalco plays a fictional version of himself while the legendary Robert De Niro portrays the real-life Salvo Maniscalco. Sebastian has reservations when Sebastian’s girlfriend Ellie (Leslie Bibb) suggests that they bring Salvo to her parent’s summer home at a country club. As the two families clash, the Maniscalcos learn what they mean to each other while trying to navigate the intensely foreign dynamic of Ellie’s parents and siblings.
