Star Trek Made the MCU Possible, Says Idw Editor Reflecting on the Franchise’s Legacy
Image
Idw’s chief editor, Heather Antos, claimed that the Star Trek franchise effectively created the blueprint for shared cinematic universes like Star Wars and the MCU. Idw has been publishing a fan favorite line of comics for the past few years with the ‘God War’ line and Star Trek: Defiant. The stories have been quite popular among the fans.

The Star Trek franchise predates many of the biggest franchises at the moment. From the MCU to even the MonsterVerse, the idea of a shared universe was pioneered by Star Trek with its various crossovers and exploration of the multiverse. Antos mentioned that she believed that without the sci-fi series, there would not be an MCU or Star Wars.

While the Star Trek franchise has indeed impacted the pop culture of America and has also had some grassroots-level impact, the shows have also benefited from the wins of its successors, especially the Star Wars franchise.

The Exorcism At 1600 Penn Q&a with Hannah Rose May
Image
With the first issue having recently been released by Idw, I caught up with Hannah Rose May to learn more about The Exorcism at 1600 Penn. From research on the White House's haunted history to teaming up with artist Vanesa Del Rey, we dive into the making of this new horror comic book series set within the most secure house on earth.

What was the inspiration behind The Exorcism At 1600 Penn and how did you end up teaming up with Idw for the new series?

Hannah Rose May: Growing up in Ireland means you’re always surrounded by the Catholic Church which had me becoming obsessed with all things exorcisms (I’m not sure what that says about me). I’ve always been fascinated with faith and belief and wanted to tell a story that had characters confronting that head on. There’s no better way to do that than with a good ol’ fashioned exorcism.

"Marvel Wasn't Interested": Why Thrawn's Star Wars Return Took So Long
Image
The iconic Star Wars Legends character Grand Admiral Thrawn is due to make his long-awaited live-action debut, yet Marvel Comics was not initially interested in including him in its comics. Thrawn debuted in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, the first book of the Legends-era Thrawn Trilogy that was popularly seen as the original Star Wars sequel trilogy by many. While Marvel was hesitant to introduce Thrawn to the current canon right away, he has now become an important figure in the new continuity, proving that his popularity transcends the typically-niche Legends-era material.

In an interview with Looper, Heather Antos (a former Marvel assistant editor and current Idw Publishing senior editor) discusses her initial pitches to Marvel that would have brought Thrawn into the post-2014 canon. While Lucasfilm supported the idea, Antos says Marvel was not interested, keeping its focus on major original trilogy characters like Luke Skywalker instead.

The fate of the Cardassians following the Dominion War from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is one of Star Trek's biggest mysteries, and now the head editor of the Trek comics produced by Idw Publishing has teased a resolution. Last fall, Idw began a new flagship Star Trek title, and this spring the book’s second story arc kicks off. Senior Editor Heather Antos has strongly hinted it will explore the fallout of the Dominion War, which left the Cardassian Empire in ruins. What happened to the Cardassians since has been a mystery–until now.

Star Trek Senior Editor Heather Antos hinted on Twitter that the book’s upcoming arc will feature the Cardassians, revealing their post-Deep Space Nine fate. Antos was replying to a fan who Tweeted they wished to see the Cardassian storyline resolved, saying, “Boy, do I have a comic for you, then, coming this spring.

Star Trek Promises Blood With Upcoming Crossover
Image
Warning: potential spoilers for Star Trek #1 ahead! A forthcoming crossover between Idw Publishing’s new Star Trek comics promises blood will be spilled. Idw has revitalized its line of comics based on the venerable franchise, releasing new titles that draw on its rich 56-year history, including Star Trek, its new flagship title. Fans Rage Over Decision to Shelve ‘Batgirl’ Film: ‘After All the Ezra Miller Bulls–‘
Leslie Grace
The reaction from fans to Warner Bros.’ decision to scrap Leslie Grace’s “Batgirl” movie is, to put it mildly, intensely negative.

And alongside shock and genuine outrage over the decision itself, the conversation on social media, especially on Twitter, focused on the Ezra Miller-sized elephant in the room: You know, because his “Flash” film is still on the slate despite months, literally months of increasingly bad headlines from the actor’s ongoing, very public personal scandals.

TheWrap confirmed on Tuesday that Warner Bros. Discovery will not release “Batgirl,” either theatrically or on HBO Max, effectively killing the 90 million project, which was already mostly completed. The movie starred “In the Heights” star Leslie Grace in the title role of Barbara Gordon.

“Talk about waking up and choosing violence,” one person tweeted. TikTok star Matt Ramos mourned the work of those involved, writing “All of their hard work deserved to be seen by the world.

X-Men Trends on Twitter as Fans Pick Their 5 Favorite Mutants
Image
The X-Men have been a pop culture staple for decades, much before the first live-action X-Men came out in 2000. In those decades, the roster of the mutant superhero team has seen many changes and evolutions, and every fan has a set of favorite heroes that they want to see on the team. Comic book artist Gail Simone recently started trending #My5XMen, asking fans to weigh in with their dream 5-member X-Men team.

"Okay, I have a Second question of the day, This Is Unprecedented. ;) There's a lot of mutants. You get to pick Five mutants to be the X-men for your dream comic. They can be from any era. Who do you pick? Xavier is a freebie, so 5 others. Please use hashtag #My5XMen."

It did not take long for fans to start putting forward suggestions for what the ideal 5-member X-Men lineup would look like. Filmmaker...

Mindy Newell: Why D’ya Think?
From Martha Thomases’s column of August 4: Last week Heather Antos, an editor at Marvel, went out with a bunch of her colleagues for milkshakes at a nearby Ben & Jerry’s and posted a selfie on Twitter. She said “It’s the Marvel milkshake crew! #FabulousFlo.” The hashtag refers to Flo Steinberg, who had just died.

So, you know, a Friday after a long week, Heather and a group of her pals went out to remember a woman who was their friend and mentor. They didn’t go to a bar. They went for ice cream. They posted a photo on Twitter because that’s what the kids do these days. I don’t know what could be more wholesome.

Naturally, there was an upset. To some, this photo represented everything that was wrong with Marvel today. Women and people of color in editorial offices apparently is a menacing concept to them,...

Fantasia 2017 Review: Geek Girls, Trials and Tribulations of Women in the Nerd World
Some guys might be forgiven for thinking that things are pretty good for women in the geek world: we are clearly visible at conventions (though perhaps more as audience than behind the tables), more 'geek' films are featuring (and made by) women; more women comic artists are making a cultural impact. But we're still only a few years out from Gamergate, and just this week, Marvel editor Heather Antos was bullied after she posted a photo of herself and other women who worked at Marvel. We've come a long way, but we still have a long way to go, and these ups and downs form Geek Girls. Gina Hara, a filmmaker out of Canada, set out to find geeks like herself, and found both inspiration...
