The Scandal cast will reunite with show creator Shonda Rhimes for a live script reading fundraiser next month benefitting victims of North Carolina’s Hurricane Helene through United Way North Carolina.

The event is spearheaded by castmember Bellamy Young, who was born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. “There were those intervening days where we couldn’t get in touch with people, you didn’t know if the people you loved were alive,” Young told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love my home so much, and I just was just trying to think of anything that I could do to help.”

The virtual event will feature Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Guillermo Diaz, Scott Foley, Katie Lowes, Joshua Malina, Joe Morton, George Newbern, Jeff Perry, Cornelius Smith, Jr. and Darby Stanchfield. Rhimes will open the reading, her producing partner Betsy Beers will narrate and more special guests will be announced soon.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.

It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.

“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. Hernandez Govan, the 43-year-old arrested and charged with arranging the murder of Young Dolph, pleaded not guilty to several charges in a Memphis court yesterday, Nov. 17.

Govan was arrested last week and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Following yesterday’s short plea hearing, a judge set Govan’s next court date for Dec. 16.

Recreating post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans was a monumental task for the crew of “Five Days at Memorial,” including for cinematographer Ramsey Nickell. It required building a façade of the hospital loading ramp and a section of what was across the street and then the major work began. “They built a tank around it…like one of those backyard pools. I built one of those all the way around it with these reinforcements around the edges and then a plastic liner and a million gallons of water,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematographers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

All the actors were tasked with bringing to life one of the greatest disasters of our generation. Julie Ann Emery had to do it with a 13-pound prosthetic pregnancy belly. That helped her get into the role of something she otherwise couldn't imagine.

Emery had finished shooting something in New Orleans just two weeks before Katrina hit. "It felt personal to me to watch on the news, but I don't think I had any awareness of what was happening inside New Orleans hospitals while this was going on.

You have no idea.” It’s an indicative exchange for this Apple TV+ series, not just because it lays plain the emotions involved, 17 years later. It’s that the show is trying to embody both sides of the conversation at once.

Crowds at the DGA theater in Los Angeles were buzzing on Monday night when Chris Pine made a surprise appearance on the red carpet. Pine came out to the “Five Days at Memorial” premiere to support his dad, Robert Pine, in his newest acting endeavor.

The father-son duo posed together before Chris made his way into the theater, letting his father walk the line to talk to the press.

For Robert, his decision to get involved with this project came down to the script. “John Ridley and Carlton Cuse wrote [the script], and you just don’t get good writing like that all the time,” Pine told Variety. “I mean, any actor here can tell you that. So when something like that comes up — whether it’s even a small role or whatever — you leap on it because you want to be part of something like that.”

The series comes from Academy Award winner John Ridley and Emmy Award winner Carlton Cuse, who both also serve as directors.

The other is Bad Sisters, a witty and emotional darkly-comedic murder mystery from Emmy Award-nominee and BAFTA Award-winning star and creator Sharon Horgan.

Apple TV+ has set global premiere dates for Five Days at Memorial, its limited series from John Ridley and Carlton Cuse, and darkly comic thriller series Bad Sisters, starring Sharon Horgan.

The first three episodes of Five Days at Memorial will launch August 12, followed by a new one every Friday through September 16. Bad Sisters will begin with its two episodes on August 19, followed by new eps on Fridays through October 14.

The Washington, D.C.-set drama centers around a team of crisis-management operatives who sacrifice their time — and often their ethics — to “handle” unimaginable crises affecting the nation’s elite.
