Watch ‘Five Days At Memorial’ VFX Supervisor Eric Durst Talk Re-Creating The 9th Ward Levee Breach – Visual Effects + Screen
Image
Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.

It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.

“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. It was like a tidal wave that wiped out everything in its path,” Durst said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen awards-season event. “We wanted to be as accurate as possible. This event took 1,400 American lives. We had to be very...

Young Dolph Suspect Pleads Guilty to Aiding Gunman After Rapper’s Murder
Image
Jemarcus Johnson, a man accused of helping one of the gunmen who allegedly killed Young Dolph (real name Adolph Thorton, Jr.), pleaded guilty on Friday to three counts of accessory after the fact that aided in the attempted coverup of Dolph’s death.

While Johnson “had no involvement” in the shooting of Dolph or its planning, he took a car from defendant Justin Johnson, his half-brother and one of the gunmen, to misdirect probation officers and help Justin escape Memphis, prosecutor Paul Hagerman said in court, according to Wreg.

A call for action and innovation in the fight against climate change rang out during the first day of the annual Environmental Media Association Impact Summit. Held at Pendry West Hollywood in partnership with Apple TV+ and The Hollywood Reporter, entertainment and sustainability leaders focused on the positive impact of environmentally conscious storytelling in the global media landscape.

“The time is now to support personal action for our climate health,” Ema CEO Debbie Levin said as the summit kicked off Wednesday. “This is a century that keeps on surprising us — storms, torrential rain, floods, earthquakes, snow and, sadly, human unrest as well. But in this room, we represent the best of us and the most innovative and the most authentically conscious. We are the change makers.”

Man Accused of Arranging Young Dolph’s Murder Pleads Not Guilty
Image
Hernandez Govan, the 43-year-old arrested and charged with arranging the murder of Young Dolph, pleaded not guilty to several charges in a Memphis court yesterday, Nov. 17.

Govan was arrested last week and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Following yesterday’s short plea hearing, a judge set Govan’s next court date for Dec. 16.

As The Associated Press reports, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy has claimed Govan “solicited the murder and put it into motion” — though prosecutors have yet to offer any...

‘Five Days at Memorial’ cinematographer Ramsey Nickell details building a set in a tank with a million gallons of water [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Recreating post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans was a monumental task for the crew of “Five Days at Memorial,” including for cinematographer Ramsey Nickell. It required building a façade of the hospital loading ramp and a section of what was across the street and then the major work began. “They built a tank around it…like one of those backyard pools. I built one of those all the way around it with these reinforcements around the edges and then a plastic liner and a million gallons of water,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematographers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

The tank also required the ability to move around the blue screens that surrounded it and have access which led to a massive effort when it came to getting other objects in there. “Every truck, every boat, everything that’s in the water in that tank...

Julie Ann Emery, Cornelius Smith Jr., and Adepero Oduye Hope Five Days at Memorial Starts Necessary Conversations
Julie Ann Emery
Now that you've seen more of the horrors inside Memorial Hospital, we've got more insight from some of the stars on Five Days on Memorial.

Julie Ann Emery, Cornelius Smith, Jr., and Adepero Oduye play three pivotal characters -- administrator Diane Robichaux, Dr. Bryant King, and nurse Karen Wynn, respectively.

Find out their thoughts as the drama unfolded for their characters and the hospital.

All the actors were tasked with bringing to life one of the greatest disasters of our generation. Julie Ann Emery had to do it with a 13-pound prosthetic pregnancy belly. That helped her get into the role of something she otherwise couldn't imagine.

Emery had finished shooting something in New Orleans just two weeks before Katrina hit. "It felt personal to me to watch on the news, but I don't think I had any awareness of what was happening inside New Orleans hospitals while this was going on.

‘Five Days at Memorial’ Review: Post-Katrina Hospital Drama Is an Operatic Look at Grief
Image
Toward the end of “Five Days at Memorial,” a character offers their sympathy by saying “I can imagine what you went through.” It’s an effort to make a human connection, even when discussing the details of an unthinkable set of circumstances. The other person’s response is simple: “Oh no, you cannot imagine. You have no idea.” It’s an indicative exchange for this Apple TV+ series, not just because it lays plain the emotions involved, 17 years later. It’s that the show is trying to embody both sides of the conversation at once.

Over eight episodes, “Five Days at Memorial” does its utmost to faithfully recreate the conditions of a hospital in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, effectively cordoned off from a rescue effort struggling to help any neighbors, too. Yet, in those moments of merely recreating the look and the feel of new Orleans’ Memorial Medical Center...

Apple's "Five Days at Memorial" Charts the Harrowing Real-Life Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
Image
Apple TV+'s new miniseries, "Five Days at Memorial" - out Aug. 12 - traces five harrowing days at a New Orleans hospital in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Pairing archival and news footage with the fictionalized scenes, the show reminds viewers that the chaotic time period that followed the natural disaster really happened not even 20 years ago. How much of the fictional onscreen story is based in reality? Quite a lot, as it turns out.

What Really Happened at Memorial Medical Center?

"Five Days at Memorial" is based on a nonfiction book by the same name, "Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital" by Sheri Fink. The book, in turn, expands on an article that won Fink the Pulitzer Prize, "The Deadly Choices at Memorial," published as a joint project by ProPublica and The New York Times in 2009.

In every version of the story, the...

Chris Pine Makes Surprise Appearance at ‘Five Days at Memorial’ Premiere to Support Dad Robert Pine
Image
Crowds at the DGA theater in Los Angeles were buzzing on Monday night when Chris Pine made a surprise appearance on the red carpet. Pine came out to the “Five Days at Memorial” premiere to support his dad, Robert Pine, in his newest acting endeavor.

The father-son duo posed together before Chris made his way into the theater, letting his father walk the line to talk to the press.

For Robert, his decision to get involved with this project came down to the script. “John Ridley and Carlton Cuse wrote [the script], and you just don’t get good writing like that all the time,” Pine told Variety. “I mean, any actor here can tell you that. So when something like that comes up — whether it’s even a small role or whatever — you leap on it because you want to be part of something like that.”

‘Five Days at Memorial’ Review: Apple TV+’s Hurricane Katrina Series Builds Powerfully, Bungles Landing
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The multi-layered tragedy of Hurricane Katrina gets the Chernobyl treatment in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, a generally nightmarish, sometimes damning new eight-part limited series sure to stick with viewers who stick with it through its poorly focused home stretch.

Five Days at Memorial benefits from not taking on the responsibility of being a definitive Hurricane Katrina chronicle, for now a distinction held by Spike Lee’s HBO documentaries When The Levees Broke and If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise. Using Sheri Fink’s 2013 book Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital as its source material, the Apple series instead is a snapshot that encompasses many aspects of a catastrophe that blended natural disaster and epic human screw-up. But it’s best to acknowledge it’s only “many” and surely not “all,” even...
