A sci-fi-infused action spectacle that’s toplined by Milla Jovovich and adapted from a video game sits as the most watched genre picture on the Hulu platform today. Surprisingly, I’m not talking about Resident Evil. No, I’m speaking of a lesser-known effort from 2020 called Monster Hunter.
Jovovich’s longtime husband Paul W.S. Anderson is at the helm of this under-seen effort. He also wrote the script. Anderson adapted the screenplay from Kaname Fujioka’s video game series.
From my vantage point, it seems Capcom hoped to recapture the success of the Resident Evil franchise by adapting another popular genre game for the screen with Jovovich in the lead and Anderson at the helm. Like with Resident Evil, Jovovich plays a character written for the film who doesn’t exist within the video game franchise.

Milla Jovovich and Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson's failed video game movie Monster Hunter is available on a new streaming platform. It can now be watched on Hulu.
Monster Hunter starred Jovovich as Natalie Artemis, a U.S. Army Ranger leading a team of loyal soldiers on a mission. The group soon finds themselves transported to a new world where they fight for survival against massive monsters that have incredible powers. Jovovich was joined by Tony Jaa, Clifford "T.I." Harris Jr., Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung and Ron Perlman in the film, which is an adaptation of Capcom's video game series of the same name.

The year may have just turned, but Netflix is kicking off 2025 with an explosive start by adding Mad Max: Fury Road, a high-octane dystopian action thriller. Debuting at #4 on the streaming chart, Fury Road revived the franchise following its thirty-year deafening silence since Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985.
Directed by George Miller and starring Tom Hardy, the film takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland ruled by the tyrannical Immortal Joe. Furiosa leads Joe's five wives on a daring escape after forming an alliance with Max Rockatansky, a former captive grieving the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. Together, they face relentless pursuit by a horde of delusional zealots hell-bent on hunting them down.

Netflix is giving action and Tom Hardy fans the perfect present to end the year. One of the actor’s greatest movies, and arguably one of the greatest movies of all time, Mad Max: Fury Road, is all set to hit the streaming platform at the end of the year, meaning those who wish to avoid the fireworks, hullabaloo, and inevitably disappointing New Years night out can instead sit back and bask in the rich, deeply saturated desert of director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic epic.
Released in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road was co-written, co-produced, and directed by George Miller, who started the Mad Max franchise with Mel Gibson way back in 1979. Hardy takes over from Gibson as the post-apocalyptic survivor and road warrior "Mad Max" Rockatansky, joining forces with Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, whose character proved to be so popular that she as given her own prequel spin-off just this year.

Everybody knows that Mel Gibson and Tom Hardy are the only two actors to have played Mad Max on the big screen - but Furiosa secretly added a third actor to that list. Fury Road was trapped in development hell for two decades, with director George Miller being able to generate two other screenplays and even consult on a Mad Max game during that time. Furiosa began life as an anime spinoff, but before evolving into a live-action prequel following Fury Road's success. An oft-overlooked entry in the saga was 2015's Mad Max, an underrated game that Miller has essentially disowned.
What's unique about the Mad Max movie franchise is how loose the continuity is. Trying to map out a coherent timeline among the movies is a ticket to despair, and the canon status of the video game was always shaky. It was believed to be a standalone tale that...

It is safe to say we will likely never watch Mad Max: The Wasteland, the long teased semi-sequel/prequel set between the events of the original Mad Max trilogy, which starred Mel Gibson, and Mad Max: Fury Road, the one that saw actor Tom Hardy step into the Aussie’s shoes. Like the movie that became this summer’s criminally overlooked Furiosa, The Wasteland was developed by franchise maestro George Miller and Nico Lathouris, the latter of whom is a dramaturge Miller originally brought in to develop an emotional authenticity and depth to Mad Max: Fury Road’s screenplay.
Instead their exploration of the material and characters went so deep that Lathouris ended up getting a screenplay credit on Fury Road while also producing versions of scripts that became the first draft of Furiosa and the still as yet unmade Mad Max: The Wasteland. Furiosa's streaming release could boost its success and reshape its reputation after a lukewarm box office performance. Despite financial challenges, Furiosa earned positive reviews and is expected to gain a loyal following like Fury Road. The future of the Mad Max franchise remains uncertain post-Furiosa, though George Miller has another sequel titled The Wasteland in development.
With confirmation of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga's impending streaming release, I'm still holding out hope for the franchise's future. While I always enjoyed the Mad Max movies for their great action and worldbuilding, I'll confess they were never my favorite action series either. Still, like most of the planet, I was blown out the back of my seat by Mad Max: Fury Road, which has earned its place as one of - if not the best - action movies of the 21st century.

The latest movie in the “Mad Max” franchise will soon be ready to watch at home. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is coming to Max on August 16.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” debuted in May at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival and received a seven-minute standing ovation there. After coming to theaters it earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it wasn’t as successful at the global box office and earned $172.8 million against a budget of $168 million.
The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, who was played by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Chris Hemsworth. The film’s plot synopsis reads, “Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. George Miller hints at a new Mad Max prequel with lots of action, set to follow Max across The Wasteland. The Wasteland will be a saga that spans a year, exploring the time before Max meets Imperator Furiosa. The new movie's production is in early stages, with a written novella and script in the works.
Furiosa director George Miller continues to tease his plans for the Mad Max franchise, revealing that his idea for a prequel following Tom Hardys Max Rockatansky across The Wasteland and onto the Fury Road would certainly have a lot of action in it. While this is unlikely to come as much of a surprise to anyone who has seen Mad Max: Fury Road, its exciting to hear that Mad Max: The Wasteland would adhere to the same level of action that made the 2015 outing so captivating.

Call it a "Mad Max" rite of passage. Ever since director George Miller's 1979 original introduced the world to the utter absurdity that is post-apocalyptic Australia, the gas-guzzling franchise has all but become a genre unto itself. After five total movies, culminating with this past weekend's "Furiosa," audiences are now well aware of what to expect from these idiosyncratic blockbusters. High-octane action, poignant ruminations on the future of our species, and a motley collection of freaks, weirdos, and badasses are well worth the price of admission alone. As far as series traditions go, however, one deceptively subtle trope returned in full force for "Furiosa."
The "Mad Max" movies have typically brought back many of the same cast members in different roles for the various sequels. For instance, newcomer fans may have been surprised to learn that the man behind the mask of "Fury Road" villain Immortan Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, had...

One of the most anticipated prequel films of all time has to be George Miller‘s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. After the initial announcement back in 2010, the anticipation for the film only grew after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, and nearly 9 years later the film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it will exceed everyone’s expectations.
Based on the characters from Mad Max: Fury Road by Miller, the prequel film is directed by Miller from a screenplay co-written by Nico Lathouris and Miller and it follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is snatched from Green Place of Many Mothers and handed over to the great biker horde’s warlord Dementus as they make their way through the Wasteland and come across the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. In the medium of cinema, sequels still feel like a relatively recent phenomenon, especially as studios continue to seek to exploit intellectual property and squeeze as much blood (re: money) out of the same stone as possible. Yet despite the obvious capitalistic aims of film franchises, cinematic universes, and what have you, the tradition of continuing a story and/or telling new tales featuring evergreen characters is very ancient.
The "Mad Max" films, as conceived by the series' mastermind, George Miller, deliberately seek to continue those ancient, mythical traditions of storytelling rather than service more modern concepts of how to present a serialized narrative. Of course, this may not have always been the case, given that the original "Mad Max" from 1979 was made partially to exploit then-popular trends like the criminal biker film, the vigilante action movie, and so on. George Miller, the director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is revisiting the on-set drama between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in his 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.
In a new interview, Miller recalled the feud between the stars during the film’s production, which resulted from Hardy’s tardiness.
“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”
Miller noted that things on the set gradually got better, adding, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.

Director George Miller attributes Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy's feud during the production of Mad Max: Fury Road to "they were just two very different performers." Miller reveals that, like their characters in the film, Hardy and Theron's professional relationship seemed to improve as the production rolled on. Theron also had to overcome the obstacle of having to work with all the dust that came along with shooting Fury Road in the desert.
Despite all the sunshine blazing brightly in the torrid desert, Mad Max: Fury Road stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron's on-set feud seemed to dump buckets of rain on the production. George Miller had the opportunity to not only work closely with the Oscar-winning Theron and the Academy Award-nominated Hardy on Fury Road an apropos title considering the actors' trouble adjusting to one another's approach to their work but the director also witnessed their quarreling firsthand.

Woe betide anyone who stumbles across the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special without any prior knowledge of the animated TV series, because it’s safe to say they’d be in for something of a shock. Created by DC animation veterans Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and written and exec-produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Dean Lorey, the show specialises in a raunchy, adult-themed and decidedly sweary take on the familiar DC Comics characters, and the Valentine’s Special pushes those limits to even further extremes.

"Have you thought about some kind of rebirth?" ShineHouse Group has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Undertow, which originally premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival in 2018. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Miranda Nation, and is a complex, emotional story of two women whose lives become dangerously enmeshed following a pregnancy tragedy. Struggling to accept the loss of her stillborn baby, Claire becomes suspicious of her husband's relationship with a feisty young woman named Angie. The emotional Aussie indie film stars Olivia Dejonge, Josh Helman, Laura Gordon, Rob Collins, and Darci McDonald. This looks good but it seems to dip a bit too much into the intensity and outrage. We would've heard more about this by now if it was really good. Worth a look anyway. Here's the official US trailer (+ two posters) for Miranda Nation's Undertow, direct from YouTube: Undertow...

The Resident Evil movie series is getting rebooted with an all-new story, but original star Milla Jovovich is still open for one day returning to the franchise. Starting in 2002, Jovovich played Alice in the Resident Evil movies, which was written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. An original character not featured in the video games, Alice would return for six sequels with Jovovich consistently playing the role, culminating in 2017's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
Alice's story might be over, but we may not have seen the last of Milla Jovovich in the franchise. Speaking with ComicBook.com about her role as Alice and the future of the franchise, Jovovich admits that she'd be up for getting involved in Resident Evil again at some point in the future if the opportunity ever comes along. Here's what she told the outlet.

Congratulations. You’ve almost endured the hellscape that is 2020. As we look towards the final month of the year, things are looking brighter on the cinema side. Unfortunately, not the actual cinemas themselves as Covid rates continue to rise, but the December lineup that is mostly rolling out digitally is remarkably strong.
Just a note, we’re not including films only having a one-week awards qualifying runs and will return earlier next year for proper releases and we’ve already mentioned Sound of Metal and Mank in last month’s round-up as they got theatrical premieres then, but will roll out on streaming services this Friday.
Lastly, before we get to the rundown, we imagine Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will dominate quite a bit of conversation this month as those opting to consider their health over returning to theaters can watch it at home.

"To kill a monster, you need a monster." Sony Pictures has revealed yet another official Chinese trailer for Monster Hunter, the epic big battle movie based on the international video game series of the same name (created by Kaname Fujioka for Capcom). We featured the first full trailer a month ago, now we have even more gnarly footage. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported to a new world, they engage in a desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers. They must fight gigantic monsters of all sorts of shapes and sizes to return home safely. This epic new Paul W.S. Anderson movie stars Milla Jovovich, of course, along with T.I. Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Ron Perlman, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung, and Tony Jaa. This new trailer finally dips more into the cheesiness of W.S. Anderson's movies, despite the rest of it still looking pretty badass.
