Octopath Traveler 2 Interview: Making Good On Aesthetic & Expectation

The reception of Octopath Traveler 2 has been strong, with many people praising its evolution of the formula that made its predecessor such an unexpected success. As a tactical Jrpg with turn-based combat and retro-inspired graphics, the notion that Octopath Traveler 2 is a niche title is a tempting one. In practice, however, its unique blend of aesthetics, deftly made gameplay systems, and earnest storytelling broaden its appeal.

That said, it was anything but a sure thing that Octopath Traveler 2 reviews would be favorable. While the initial proof of concept was an appealing one, improvements needed to be made. Post-launch, it's easy to see how the team approached this - incorporating plenty of fan feedback on the original alongside some deeper, more intertwined narratives - but was it really so simple?

‘Octopath Traveler’ A ‘Labor of Love’ For The Developers
Now that Square Enix’s Nintendo Switch exclusive role-playing game “Octopath Traveler” is on store shelves, the developers are talking about some of the inspirations and challenges involved in its creation in a note on the Nintendo website.

“Octopath Traveler” is a turn-based RPG that tells the stories of eight adventurers in the fictional fantasy world of Orsterra. Players are free to go through the eight individual tales in any order they choose. The game is “a labor of love developed by a team that grew up in the golden age of RPGs” and they wanted to update the classic RPG formula for the modern age, said composer Yasunori Nishiki.
