Directed by Ryan Ashley Lowery, Light Up is centered around five prolific figures of the Black queer community: Dunlap Simone, Derek Johnson, Benjamin Carlton, Obio Jones, and Octavius Terry. Over the course of the documentary Lowery, along with other interviewers, get into the nitty-gritty of the lives of the film’s subjects, how they learned that they were queer, the kind of push back they faced from society, and what did it take for them to overcome the hurdles placed in front of them and make a name for themselves in a profession of their choosing. Lowery sat down for a virtual chat with me to talk about the experience of making Light Up, what it was like to interview Simone, Johnson, Carlton, Jones, and Terry, representation of Black queer people in the world of entertainment, and more.

Cote de Pablo & Michael Weatherly To Host ‘NCIS’ Rewatch Video Podcast For Spotify

NCIS vets Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly are set to host Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch, a new weekly video podcast for Spotify. Slated to launch on Tuesday, June 4, the podcast features the two who will reprise their characters in the upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva spinoff series produced by CBS Studios for Paramount+.

In each weekly podcast episode, de Pablo and Weatherly, along with a special guest, will rewatch iconic NCIS episodes.

Former franchise cast and guest stars making appearances include Sean Murray, Sasha Alexander, Eric Christian Olsen, Jon Cryer and more who will join the hosts to reminisce about the show’s impact in television and pop culture, and reveal exclusive behind-the-scenes moments from making the TV series.

The ‘Citadel’ Effect: TV Enters a New Age of Franchises… or Flops

Not long ago, a major streaming service released an expensive, action-packed series meant to be the foundation of a new franchise. And the service needed a franchise. Competitors were attracting millions of subscribers with interconnected universes built from established intellectual properties, and this streamer wasn’t attached to a legacy brand with a library full of iconic audience favorites. So, it had to build them from scratch (or buy them), and this new program was their latest oh-so-pricey attempt to do just that.

On paper, it looked like a safe bet. There were dozens of central characters and a story that spanned decades. There was action and lore, families at war, and friends turned enemies. Hundreds of millions went into producing the debut season, with reshoots and creative turnover all given the go-ahead to ensure this franchise starter would catch fire.
