Kristen Stewart’s ‘The Chronology of Water’ Is One Hell of a Directorial Debut
Image
“I bled, I peed, I cried, and vomited.” This sentence comes at the end of the second paragraph of The Chronology of Water, Lidia Yuknavitch’s extraordinary, extraordinarily raw 2011 memoir about growing up, nearly giving up, and straining to getting a grip on a traumatic past. It follows one of the most striking openings of any autobiography — an extended description of her holding her daughter moments after the stillborn baby has been delivered. Kristen Stewart has been talking about bringing Yuknavitch’s book to the screen for years. But she...

The Royal We Review: Princess Power and Political Peace
Image
The Royal We opens with a straightforward narrative spark: Princess Coralina’s abrupt elopement with a plumber dissolves a centuries‑old treaty, thrusting her younger sister, Bea, into the role of heir and reluctant peacekeeper. Screenwriters employ a clean three‑act framework, using this diplomatic crisis as an inciting incident that ripples through every subsequent beat.

Act two pivots on tonal contrasts—formal court banter gives way to late‑night pizza runs and impromptu bowling alleys—cleverly illustrating how Bea’s grounded perspective unsettles palace protocol and reshapes Desmond’s princely reserve into genuine warmth.

Time jumps are handled briskly, skipping past initial awkwardness to focus on how media frenzy and social‑media pop‑ups heighten stakes. These montages serve as both comedic punctuation and narrative shorthand, though they occasionally sprint ahead of character moments that deserve more breathing room. Still, the story’s architecture remains transparent: a political engagement evolves into real affection,...

Anna Kendrick's Underrated Domestic Thriller Finds New Life on Streaming
Image
Since her explosion onto the film scene in 2008's Twilight, Anna Kendrick has risen to become a permanent fixture in Hollywood, portraying a variety of different roles. From aspiring music producer Beca Mitchell in Pitch Perfect to Cinderella in Into the Woods, she's seemingly done it all. However, perhaps none of her performances have been more powerful than that of Alice in the 2022 thriller Alice, Darling, which has recently climbed to the number three spot on Hulu's Top 10 most-watched movies.

Helmed by first-time director Mary Nighy, Alice, Darling focuses on Kendrick's character of Alice and the psychologically abusive relationship she finds herself in with her boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick). As she vacations with her two best friends, Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku), without Simon's knowledge, she gets the chance to reevaluate her life, but not before her controlling partner shows up, which leads to a tense...

Sebastian Stan Says Actors Won't Discuss 'The Apprentice' for Fear of Donald Trump
Image
Sebastian Stan was highly praised for portraying Donald Trump in the biographical drama, The Apprentice. While the movie did not make a huge splash at the box office, it stirred up a lot of controversy prior to its release, thanks mainly to the former and new president of America. Now Stan has revealed that since Trumps unprecedented election victory, he has found himself being shut out when it comes to being able to speak about the movie even having to cancel an episode of Varietys Actors on Actors series as no one would participate with him.

Speaking at a Q&a after a screening of The Apprentice, Stan joined director Ali Abbasi to talk about the film, and revealed that he has struggled to find people willing to openly discuss the movie and its subject in any way for fear of receiving some kind of blowback for it. Stan said:...

‘The Apprentice’ Review
Image
Stars: Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova, Martin Donovan, Catherine McNally, Charlie Carrick, Ben Sullivan | Written by Gabriel Sherman | Directed by Ali Abbasi

Directed by Ali Abbasi (who made Iranian serial killer drama Holy Spider) and written by political journalist Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice is a chilling account of Donald Trump’s rise to power in New York in the ’70s and ’80s. It’s particularly fascinating because it traces the origins of key elements of Trump’s larger-than-life persona, though it arguably never gets below the surface.

The Apprentice begins in 1973, where 27-year-old Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) is working as a rent collector for a real estate company owned by his father, Fred (Martin Donovan). With an upcoming lawsuit hanging over their heads, Trump starts hanging out at a swanky New York club, where he’s singled out by shark-like lawyer Roy Cohn (Succession’s Jeremy Strong), who revels...

Donald Trump Is Not Holding Back On Sebastian Stan's The Apprentice
Image
This article contains a discussion of sexual assault.

Former President of the United States and "Home Alone 2" actor Donald Trump isn't happy about how he's portrayed in the explosive new biopic "The Apprentice." The movie, which stars Sebastian Stan as Trump, takes a searing look at Trump's real-estate career in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, and though it's not exactly clear if Trump has seen the film, he does not like it.

The film officially released in the United States on Friday, October 11, and Trump quickly took to Truth Social, his social media platform, to put the movie on blast.

"A Fake and Classless Movie written about me, called, 'The Apprentice' (Do they even have the right to use that name without approval?), will hopefully 'bomb,'" the Republican candidate for president wrote. "It's a cheap, defamatory, and politically disgusting hatchet job, put out right before the 2024 Presidential Election,...

Sebastian Stan’s Secret for Gaining Weight to Play Trump: Drinking ‘A Lot of Coca-Cola,’ the ‘Apprentice’ Actor Says
Image
Sebastian Stan was tasked with gaining 15 pounds when he took on the role of Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” — a feat he managed with the help of Coca-Cola. “I actually started drinking a lot of Coca-Cola. Tell you, if you drink four Coca-Colas a day, a lot of things happen to your body. Don’t do it,” he told “Entertainment Tonight.”

“I think it is important that we try and understand this person beyond just, you know, the red tie and the flare and the mannerisms and everything, and just try to get underneath it,” Stan added.

Stan’s weight gain method of choice was somewhat appropriate, given Trump’s own love of soda. Of course, Trump doesn’t go for the sugary version — he shared in 2017 that he drinks 12 Diet Cokes a day.

“The Apprentice” is set in 1970s and ’80s New York, a time during which a young...

Some Big-Name Directors and Studios Turned Down The Apprentice
Image
Director Ali Abbasi risked his career to direct the upcoming biopic about former U.S. President Donald Trump called The Apprentice. The Holy Spider director has already worked with sensitive topics based on real-life events, so The Apprentice seemed right up his alley, but other directors and distributors were not willing to take the risk. Abbasi has been vocal about his struggle to make the film and score a distributor, encountering networks like ABC and CBS that refuse to air the movie in TV spots. As the 2024 election grows closer, new details about the tough production are being revealed.

8 Classic Biopics About Historical Figures From Abraham Lincoln to Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Image
Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

The Oscar Best Picture Race: Deadline’s Critics Compare Notes On The Season So Far
Image
With the awards race ramping up, and festival favorites emerging, the list of films in the Best Picture Oscar race can seem long, and, this early in the season, distinctly unclear. Fortunately, both Deadline’s Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic, Pete Hammond, and Film Awards Editor Damon Wise keep on hand an ever-evolving dossier of ones to watch. But then, of course, they don’t always agree. So, we got them together to boil it all down in a back-and-forth: What’s hot, what’s not, and what’s got big-prize potential. Bear in mind, there are, of course, more films yet to come, and for brevity’s sake, not every film with broad Oscar potential could be included in this discussion, but here are Hammond and Wise in conversation about some of the films on their maybe-Best-Picture lists right now. Sebastian Stan’s Donald Trump Role in ‘The Apprentice’ Could’ve Easily Looked Like a Saturday Night Live Sketch if He Messed Up One Thing
Image
Sebastian Stan is already a proven actor and action star, taking up several roles in various projects from the past, notably as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he’s been a part of other critically acclaimed projects such as Gossip Girl, Once Upon A Time, The Martian, and Black Swan.

But the 42-year-old Romanian-Amercian actor recently filmed what could be his toughest role yet. Stan was cast as Donald Trump in an upcoming movie called The Apprentice.

Portraying an actual person is hard enough, but acting as the 45th U.S. President comes with its own set of challenges, besides the criticism it is bound to receive from Trump’s loyal supporters. Needless to say, that’s going to be nerve-wracking.

The Apprentice Cast & Character Guide: Who Plays Donald Trump?
Image
Several months after its debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the highly-anticipated The Apprentice is releasing in theaters. The Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi directed the biopic that follows Donald Trump's rise to prominence in the real estate business during the 1970s and 1980s, with the former United States president not involved in the making of the film. The Apprentice debuted to positive reviews following its Cannes debut.

Despite the largely positive reception, The Apprentice's release became controversial as the film struggled to find a U.S. distributor following legal action from Trump and his supporters. Other controversies revolved around Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder, who demanded a recut after investing via the production company Kinematics because he was under the impression that the film would have a favorable depiction of Trump. The Apprentice eventually landed Briarcliff Entertainment as a U.S. distributor, ensuring the project would be...

The Apprentice Director Says His Donald Trump Film is 'Not a Political Hit Piece'
Image
The upcoming Donald Trump movie The Apprentice has been plagued by controversy since it was announced in Nov.2023, with the former President attempting to prevent its release. However, director Ali Abbasi says the project is free from any political malice.

"I have allowed myself as a non-American to take a deep look into this country and system," Abbasi told the crowd during a screening at the Telluride Film Festival (via Deadline). The filmmaker explained that his intention was to tell an exploratory story. "On a more serious note, at least for myself, this is not a political hit piece. This is a mirror and it is intended to show you, as the mirrors do, an image of yourselves, not you per-se, but you as community."

The actress was famously well-known for her performances as Jessica in the Twilight movies and as Beca in the Pitch Perfect franchise. While she made a name for herself as a comedic and musical performer, she also proved over the years that she was a talented dramatist.

Anna Kendricks best movies were from all manner of genres, ranging from childrens animation to science fiction. However, some of her greatest roles were in films that didnt receive the love and appreciation they deserved, whether that was at the time of release or a later point. The Apprentice gained buzz when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and it's a film that Trump clearly doesn't want people to see, but it looks like it's still full steam ahead for a release right before the upcoming election.

Per Deadline, The Apprentice was picked up by Briarcliff Entertainment for U.S. distribution, with a release date planned for Oct. 11, but that was in doubt due to mediation between the film's producers and its financiers, Kinematics. The latter is owned by Trump supporter Dan Snyder, who took issue with how Trump (played by Sebastian Stan in the film) was portrayed in the movie, particularly in a scene where he rapes his former wife...

‘The Apprentice’ Is the Most Brutal Donald Trump Biopic Imaginable
Image
Every superhero gets an origin story. So, for that matter, do most supervillains. The Apprentice drops viewers into New York circa 1973, when a 34-year-old resident of Queens walked in to the upper-crust establishment on the Upper West Side known as Le Club. He went there in an attempt to impress a young woman. He’d leave having met a well-known lawyer and well-connected member of New York’s elite, who would end up changing his life. The legal eagle was the notorious Roy Cohn. The outer-borough wannabe was Donald Trump.

‘The Apprentice’ Review: Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong Are Superb in Chilling Account of the Unholy Alliance That Birthed Donald Trump
Image
To clear any confusion up front, The Apprentice has nothing to do with the NBC reality competition of that name, in which Donald Trump sifted through a field of aspiring businesspeople to identify the most promising of them, sending an eliminated contestant home each week with the brutal dismissal, “You’re fired!” On the other hand, you could say that Ali Abbasi’s biographical drama has everything to do with the television series.

It’s a reverse reflection of the mentorship process, in which the host becomes the hungry young upstart, laying the foundations for a business empire built in part out of smoke and mirrors, and operating under the guidance of a master manipulator.

Written by political journalist and Roger Ailes biographer Gabriel Sherman, the movie is first and foremost the story of a Faustian pact, in which the eager apprentice is schooled to ditch conventional notions of morality,...

Under The Radar: The Lovecraftian Ick Of Glorious, A Different Side Of Anna Kendrick In Alice, Darling, And More
Image
(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: "Glorious" serves up Lovecraftian ick with a side of cheese, Anna Kendrick shines in "Alice, Darling," and appreciating the downbeat joys of HBO's "Perry Mason.")

March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

March alone...

Alice, Darling Resonated With Anna Kendrick Because Of Her Personal Experience With Abuse
Image
In "Alice, Darling," Academy Award-nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") plays Alice, a woman dealing with a psychologically abusive boyfriend named Simon (Charlie Carrick). Things come to a head when she heads off on a secret vacation with her girlfriends (Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku), who don't know about her relationship. As Alice slowly begins to fall apart free of Simon's manipulative efforts, her friends attempt to break through the walls she's built around her.

Then Simon shows up without warning.

It's a harrowing story and one that is all too familiar for so many people. Anna Kendrick is perhaps more well-known for her comedic and musical roles in films like "Pitch Perfect," "Into the Woods," and "Trolls," so this might seem like a bit of a departure. It certainly did to "Hot Ones" host Sean Evans who asked her about it when she appeared on the show. If...

‘Alice, Darling’ (2022) Movie Review: A film for Anna Kendrick
Image
Alice, Darling is a film directed by Mary Nighy and starring Anna Kendrick.

Anna Kendrick stars in this movie which is a great acting treat for any dramatic actress. She exhibits all her talent which is indisputable in this drama about abuse.

About the Movie Alice, Cariño (2022)

Fancy a drama about male abuse? Here you have one called “Alice, Darling”, a movie written by Alanna Francis which, thanks to a good screenplay, the goals of the movie are reached in an intelligent manner… that is also manipulative (as the plot reveals to us).

This is a story about psychological abuse that is well narrated and is also a “social denouncement” and you need to be prepared for this. A drama and a denouncement featuring three women who defend themselves and a friend.

Technically this has a very good screenplay that goes shaping and offering the keys to the story very...

Alice, Darling (Mary Nighy)

Everything you need to know about Alice’s (Anna Kendrick) state of mind concerning the abuse inflicted by her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) are the words “it’s not like he hurts me.” We feel Sophie’s (Wunmi Mosaku) wince in our bones—”hurt” doesn’t only become noteworthy when wrought by a physical altercation. Alice is glued to her phone to ensure she doesn’t miss a call or text. She wakes up super early to apply make-up and style her hair to Simon’s preference. Parrots all the soundbites he uses to police her eating habits about the toxicity of sugar. And literally pulls her hair out of her head whenever she has a spare second...

Anna Kendrick at an event for Up in the Air (2009)
Alice, Darling and the importance of showing emotional abuse on screen
Anna Kendrick at an event for Up in the Air (2009)
The new film starring Anna Kendrick is one of the few visual narratives to deftly handle the insidious effects of an emotionally abusive relationship

If not guided by an ominous score and a remarkable lead performance of brittle, jittery anxiety, it might take you a third of Alice, Darling, a new film starring Anna Kendrick as a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, to realize something is wrong. Alice’s relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), a thirtysomething Toronto-based artist with a suave British accent, could seem innocuous on a clue-by-clue basis. In isolation, a “thinking of me?” text with a kissing face emoji, or the way he drapes his arm over her like a cape, or his chiding to raise her professional ambitions, could seem like affection. The tell is in Alice’s frayed hair – barrel-curled into, as her friend Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) puts it, an outdated Gossip Girl coif and,...

Alice, Darling – Review
Image
So, a couple of weeks ago we saw the “Mr. Nice-Guy” of the movies, Tom Hanks channel his inner grump as A Man Called Otto. And now a new release has another actor “pushing” out of their cinema “comfort zone”, though maybe not as jarring as Mr. H. For the last few years she’s made her “name” in bouncy musicals (even a music franchise) and frothy, but usually witty, “rom-coms”. From this film’s title, many moviegoers may think this effort falls in the latter category. And they would be mistaken. Granted it concerns modern relationships and a romance that, to put it lightly, has taken a turn. As you might guess, today’s tech “amps up” the problems. Perhaps that’s why there’s more than a touch of irony in its title, along with general menace, with what should be a phrase of endearment, Alice, Darling.

The...

Alice, Darling review: Anna Kendrick draws on her own experiences in a poignant abuse drama
Image
Alice (Anna Kendrick) doesn’t see herself as a victim of abuse. In fact, she insists she isn’t. Why then when Alice and her friends (played by Kaniehtiio Horn and Wunmi Mosaku) come across a poster for a missing girl presumed to have been killed by someone close to her, can she not shake off the spectral feeling of connection to this total stranger’s tragedy? After all, she says to her friends and herself, it’s not like her boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) “hurts me or anything”.

What Alice can’t yet see – and what forms the core revelation of the understated but poignant Alice, Darling – is that abuse is not always a single action. It lives and breathes within her relationship with Simon. It is the ever-present, sickly dread that resides in the pit of Alice’s stomach, which dictates that she must cater to Simon’s every...

Alice, Darling review – Anna Kendrick excels in abusive relationship thriller
Mary Nighy
Kendrick impresses as a woman being deprived of emotional oxygen by a toxic boyfriend, though Mary Nighy’s film gets distracted by a subplot

Anna Kendrick gives a vehement, self-aware lead performance in this Gaslight-style suspense drama about a young woman trapped in a coercive, abusive relationship from screenwriter Alanna Francis and debut feature director Mary Nighy. There are some edge-of-the-seat moments and interestingly subtle tonal inflexions, though the story spends time on a contrived subplot about a missing girl, time that might have been better devoted to developing the central thriller storyline.

Alice (Kendrick) is in a toxic relationship with Simon (Charlie Carrick), an arrogant, controlling man with an uncertain career as an artist, in constant need of reassurance and always tracking Alice’s movements. When Alice is allowed out for a rare evening at a bar with her two best friends Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku...
