Blood Orange has announced his first new album in six years, Essex Honey, out on August 29th via RCA. He’s also revealed two new songs, “Mind Loaded” and “Somewhere in Between.”
Essex Honey is Dev Hynes first album as Blood Orange since 2019’s Angel’s Pulse, and his first new music offering since 2022’s Four Songs EP — which also served as his RCA Records debut. Essex Honey finds Hynes diving into his childhood growing up outside of the Essex region in England, with a press release describing the project as a “soundtrack created from a dreamscape of his journey working through grief.”

Last month, Dev Hynes returned as Blood Orange for the first time in three years with “The Field,” a Caroline Polachek-assisted single about grief and escapism. As it turns out, the musician has been thinking a lot about these themes in the six years since his most recent studio album. The grief that comes with living, but also growing up, leaving home, and turning to music to make sense of it all works as the foundation of Essex Honey, the new album from Blood Orange, out August 29.

Lorde celebrated the release of Virgin by performing the entire album live for the first time at a surprise, early-morning set at Glastonbury.
The musician confirmed the set Thursday night and took the stage at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with a very full crowd there to meet her, despite such little notice and the non-traditional time slot. (Per the BBC, so many people showed up that Glastonbury had to close access to the Woodsies field due to overcrowding concerns.)

Lorde’s long-awaited fourth album is here. Virgin is available to stream on all platforms now.
The Grammy winner’s Virgin is the singer-songwriter’s first album in four years, following up the indie-folk LP Solar Power. She wrote and produced every song with Jim-e Stack, and the album features additional production and writing from Dev Hynes, Daniel Nigro, and Fabiana Palladino. She first teased the project in April with the single “What Was That,” a huge arena-pop break-up anthem. Lorde followed the lead single with two more: “Man of the Year” and “Hammer.

Turnstile’s dual singles “Seein’ Stars” and “Birds” provide the soundtrack to a new Taco Bell commercial promoting Tony Hawk’s Build Your Own Luxe Cravings Box and starring the legendary skateboarder.
The two songs, which were released together in late April, appear on Turnstile’s new album, Never Enough, which arrived earlier this month. In the clip, a group of young skateboarders are hanging out at the top of a ramp and eating Taco Bell when they look up and suddenly see Hawk about to make his way down, with one of them asking, “Is that Tony Hawk?”

Anyone who frequented the live music scene in New York over the last decade has a favorite story about Baby’s All Right, the 280-seat club in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. There was the night Billie Eilish, then 15, played songs from her first EP and a cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” The time Mac DeMarco, with the help of some wine, wrote a “theme song” for the club. Or the night Zoë Kravitz’s band Lolawolf played a set to an audience that included her dad Lenny and Anne Hathaway.

Turnstile’s much-anticipated follow-up to 2021’s massive Glow On is like a mysterious gallery. It’s not so much a collection of tracks, but impressions, aural vignettes that are more about a feeling than a message — a vibe that listeners can pursue at their leisure, like wandering through an echoing portrait hall. It makes sense that frontman Brendan Yates has dubbed himself an “art director” this time around, as the band takes another step toward challenging the already-blurry edges of genre, and creating something new with Never Enough.

On an unusually freezing April day in New York, the wind rustles through the cracks of a window AC unit in an apartment high above the streets of the West Village. It’s an unpretentious two-bedroom, and with its taupes and earthy browns, it feels homey and lived-in. There’s a pack of opened Marlboro Golds and loose cash by the door, Post-its stuck to the refrigerator, melted candle wax and magazines on the coffee table, tall branches in a vase, the smell of freshly burned palo santo in the air.

Brat was Rolling Stone’s album of the year for 2024, and judging from what Lorde has been saying about Charli Xcx’s record, it was probably hers, too. “I’d been trying to express [myself] in this naked way, and then Brat came out, and she was kind of doing that from the other side of the coin almost,” Lorde told BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday.
The whole album became something like a revelation to the artist. “Brat coming out really gave me a kick in a lot of ways,” Lorde said.

When Charli Xcx dubbed it a “Turnstile Summer” at Coachella, it seems she meant it’s going to be a lush, ominous, head-cracking kind of season. That is, if the hardcore band’s new video for “Seein’ Stars” and “Birds” is any indication.
A perfect demonstration of Turnstile’s dichotomy — blistering hardcore mixed with endlessly inventive melodies — the double video starts off dreamy, with a gaggle of dancers undulating to soaring vocals and Bill and Ted-esque electric guitars. Turnstile have released two new songs, “Seein’ Stars” and “Birds,” from their upcoming album, Never Enough, along with a seamless music video for both tracks.
The double single showcases the two sides of the band’s sound. “Seein’ Stars” is the softer pop song, with guest vocals from some well-known singers — Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange) and Hayley Williams (Paramore) — and a disco-esque guitar riff that conjures up David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Meanwhile, “Birds” is a two-minute sprint that sees Turnstile in full mosh mode — a reminder they can still dish out some potent hardcore.
The accompanying music video, directed by singer Brendan Yates and guitarist Pat McCrory, artfully bridges the disparate tracks like a short film. Words don’t feel like enough when trying to capture the profundity of the heartrending documentary Daughters — but music does. The film’s enchanting score, composed by vocalist and musician Kelsey Lu, brings the same level of thoughtfulness as the musician does to their own projects and collaborations with artists like Solange and Blood Orange. Lu first tried their hand at scoring with 2023’s Earth Mama, a compelling feature about a young single mother navigating the foster care systemdirected by Savanah Leaf. The artist’s deep classical training has given them the intellect and ear to expand sound through textured instrumentation in a way that accentuates filmic subjects. “It came really naturally for me because I make music that feels very cinematic,” Lu says. “It has a lot of layers.”

Nathy Peluso and Álvaro Díaz and are tired of each other’s antics — but won’t let their imperfections stop things from getting heated. On Tuesday, the Argentinian vocalist/rapper and the Puerto Rican rap star released their collaboration “Xq Eres Así,” alongside a video filmed in Mexico City.
In it, the musicians play a pair of imperfect lovers in a Nineties-set home in Mexico, and they question their dynamic in the lyrics. The visual jumps between the musicians fighting, and then making up, in different parts of their home.

One evening this past spring, a varied collection of individuals assembled on a dead-end street in Queens, dressed to the nines. Among them were high-fashion models, up-and-coming artists, established rockers, and a number of plus-ones who had no clue what they were getting into. Each member of the flock had received an enigmatic, washed-out flier, its pink backdrop resembling a star-studded branch of some far-away galaxy. A banner of text near the bottom gave an address and a time, with the words “Invite Only.” Whispered asides and flurries of tense laughter bounced around the alleyway,...

Clairo took the stage at The Tonight Show to perform her recent album cut “Juna” alongside her live band and a horn section. The musician, Claire Cottrill, offered an intimate, sweet performance of the song, which appears on her new LP, Charm, much to the delight of host Jimmy Fallon.
Cottrill dropped Charm, which follows 2021’s Sling and 2019’s Immunity, earlier this month. Produced Leon Michels, Charm was cut at Allaire Studios just outside of Woodstock, New York (where she also recorded Sling) and Diamond Mine Recording in Queens. She...

A month after casually dropping “Sexy to Someone,” the summery banger for homebodies everywhere, Clairo has released more music. Her new single, “Nomad,” features a bending, almost psychedelic opening, as Cottrill’s calming, delicate voice enters: “I’d run the risk of losing everything/ So all my things become nomadic.” Later, she admits, “I’m cynical, a mess/ I’m touch-starved and shameless.”
“Nomad” is the opening track to Cottrill’s upcoming album Charm, out July 12. The date is consistent with her previous two records (2021’s Sling and 2019’s Immunity...

Emma Roberts and Cody John couple up while stepping out for the Lacoste Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 fashion show held on Tuesday (March 5) in Paris.
The 33-year-old American Horror Story actress and her actor beau joined several other celebs at the Paris Fashion Week runway presentation, which was the brand’s creative director Pelagia Kolotouros‘ Paris debut.
Also in attendance at the fashion show were Adrien Brody, Gia Coppola and beau Honor Titus, Hari Nef, Grace Jones, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mel C, Fai Khadra, Wisdom Kaye, Dev Hynes, Clara Berry and Emma Brooks.
The new collection “re-energizes the brand in the spirit of the young René Lacoste — aka ‘the crocodile’ — who was the world’s number one ranked tennis player when Paris was the world capital of creativity across the arts. Lines twist, angles disappear and curves surprise as she carves out a new path informed by the elegant modernism of the 1920s and 1930s.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

2023 had its fair share of memorable scores and music. Any year with new work from Joe Hisaishi and Mica Levi is going to be one for the books, but the last 12 months also gave us Robbie Robertson’s swan song and a Dev Hynes/Paul Schrader collaboration. In terms of performance, Bradley Cooper conducting the London Philharmonic was irresistible, but no more so than Talia Ryder’s opening number in The Sweet East or the hero of Fallen Leaves experiencing his moment of clarity while listening to a Swedish synth group. Maybe the best musical performance I saw in a movie this year comes at the beginning of Nicolas Philibert’s On the Adamant, a documentary about a psychiatric care center that sits on the river Seine and provides a port for inner storms. The singer’s name is François, an angular, middle-aged man who growls a raw rendition of...

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Birth/Rebirth (Laura Moss)
Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Directed by Laura Moss, there’s the sense they either don’t have much of a feel for the genre or rather harbors a general disdain for the shorthands it’s fallen into (hopefully they don’t get absorbed into bad studio product soon), the film’s tendencies refreshingly feel free of the trappings of calling-card cinema. – Ethan V. (full review)

Plot: The film follows Narvel Roth, the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens. He is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill. When Mrs. Haverhill demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya) as a new apprentice, chaos enters Narvel’s spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all.
Review: Paul Schrader’s career has always been one of extreme highs and lows. While his writing and directing efforts are typically tagged with his credits on Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, Schrader’s output in the 2000s has been wildly inconsistent. But, since his 2017 masterpiece First Reformed, the filmmaker has delivered a solid follow-up in 2021’s The Card Counter and looks to complete a loose thematic trilogy with Master Gardener. After a slight lapse with 2021’s subpar The Card Counter, writer/director Paul Schrader returns to solid, provocative form in this captivating character study of an emotionally detached horticulturalist with a dark past who is forced to reconnect with traits he once embraced, and now hates, to save someone he loves. On paper, Master Gardener’s plot can easily be streamlined into a sentence long synopsis but Schrader’s film, like it’s protagonist, is enriched with depth and complexity.

Before his passing in late March, the late Japanese composer and electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto had been putting together a playlist of music to be played at his own funeral. Now, Sakamoto’s management has shared that “last playlist,” simply titled “funeral.”
“We would like to share the playlist that Ryuichi had been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his own passing,” Sakamoto’s team wrote in an accompanying message. “He truly was with music until the very end.”
Opening with an 11-minute track by Sakamoto’s frequent collaborator Alva Noto, the 33-song playlist features classical music from Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel. It also includes the work of renowned film composers Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, jazz music from Bill Evans Trio, and David Sylvian’s “Orpheus” — the latter of which features Sakamoto himself on piano and synths.
