NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has released the nominees and jury for its 14th annual awards that recognize the top rising talent in independent film globally.

The awards will recognize 130 nominees spanning 16 award categories, encompassing directors, writers, producers, performers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and composers. These outstanding nominees were chosen from Nfmla’s most recent programming year, which took place in 2024 and reflect some of the most promising emerging independent filmmakers globally. The selection includes projects from Nfmla’s InFocus initiative, which highlights stories and filmmakers who are often not adequately represented in mainstream media.

“We are proud to support and uplift the work of such a talented cohort of filmmakers whose work deserves to be widely seen and acknowledged and to be part of their journey,” says Nfmla p programming director Bojana Sandic.

The 2021 United States dramatic airlift out of Afghanistan is the subject of “Escape From Kabul,” an HBO Original documentary being released on Sept. 21.

Directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours at the Capitol”) and executive produced by Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”), the docu was filmed over 18 days during the United States military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan’s Kabul International Airport last year. The chaotic airlift ended a two-decade war with the Taliban that began shortly after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

U.S. Marines were deployed to Kabul on August 13, 2021, with orders to evacuate American citizens and “at risk” Afghans who had cooperated with the Americans and Allied Forces during the 20 -year conflict. HBO’s Original two-part documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream” will debut later this month.

Directed by Judd Apatow (“The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling”) and Michael Bonfiglio (“May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers”), the doc will air on HBO on back-to-back nights, with Part 1 premiering on Friday, May 20 at 8:00-9:55 p.m. Et/Pt, followed by on Saturday, May 21, at the same time.

HBO Max announced that “Scoobtober” programming will begin Oct. 1 on HBO Max and Cartoon Network, featuring over 17 hours of Scooby-Doo content with new celebrity guests on the animated series including Cher, Sean Astin, Jessic Biel, Terry Bradshaw, Lucy Liu, Jason Sudeikis and Run Dmc.

The lineup includes new episodes of “Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?,” Scooby-Doo films from the Warner Bros. Home Entertainment library and the Cartoon Network premiere of “Scoob!” airing Oct. 24. HBO has set a fall premiere for Four Hours At The Capitol, a documentary film chronicling the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The film, which hails from HBO Documentary Films in association with the BBC, will debut Wednesday, October 20 at 9 pm Et/Pt on HBO and available for streaming on HBO Max.

Executive produced by Emmy winner Dan Reed (Leaving Neverland) and directed by Jamie Roberts, Four Days At The Capitol is described as a harrowing and immersive chronicle of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, many with the intent of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency.
