DanceOn has secured an investment that will allow it to waltz past its YouTube origins and become something much bigger. The dance video network has landed a $4 million funding round led by AMC Networks. The windfall will allow DanceOn to expand its offerings to multiple platforms, though it will retain its position as a top YouTube dance hub. “YouTube is a really important part of what we do, and we’ll always be fostering a community and audience on YouTube,” said DanceOn CEO Amanda Taylor. "But we're really looking at growing beyond this definition of being a multichannel network...To the extent we are generating premium content, we want to be on all devices.” With that goal in mind, it's not surprising to find Roku Cmo Matthew Anderson among the list of investors for the recent round. DanceOn is one of the most successful channels born from the YouTube Original...

The video for David Guetta's 'Play Hard' has received plenty of critical attention due to its undoubted weirdness, especially for a catchy pop song featuring Akon and Ne-Yo. Some of the video's main characters are its dancers, clad in costumes that reference high-art. The Edge, a new series on the popular DanceOn channel, is exploring those dancers to see where they got their origins and how they landed the gig. During the nine minute documentary, we learn about each of the dancers in turn as they discuss their hopes and fears while showing off their mad skillz. Guetta also gets some screen time to discuss what inspired him when casting the video. “This was a passion project for me and everyone on set,“ he said. “Music brings people together. Every dancer moved in a unique way but what they all had in common was spirit and a positive approach to the video.

I remember the first year I was really invested in the outcome of the Academy Awards. I was 7 or 8, and Titanic was up for Best Picture. My mom, who taught me everything I know about pop culture, was in serious fangirl mode over the whole thing — she had a Heart of the Ocean replica necklace, we had a 3-D puzzle of the ship itself, and she had let me watch the movie on VHS with her, fast forwarding through the naughty scenes.
But I also had a strict bedtime.
At 8 p.m. (very strict), I was told it was time for me to retire.

We all know the future of TV is the web, and now DanceOn has officially launched the first major online dance competition series. HollywoodLife.com has all the scoop! Have you ever watched your favorite YouTube star and asked yourself, "Sure, they can make me laugh -- but can they dance?" If so, allow me to present your next addiction: Dance Showdown, a new interactive web series, pairs famous YouTube personalities ("Obama Girl" and Tay Zonday are among its ranks) with professional dancers to compete against other teams. And while that aspect might sound vaguely familiar, DanceOn founder Amanda Taylor and Dance Showdown creative executive producer D-Trix give HollywoodLife.com three key differences to mainstream TV dance competitions. 1. The audience is broader: "It's actually cooler than just America voting," Amanda points out. "It's the entire world." 2. The drama is real: "Sometimes [dance competition shows] get too personal," D-Trix says. "We're cutting around all...
