Psychological Horror ‘By the Throat’ Set to Unsettle Audiences at FrightFest
Image
The psychological horror By the Throat is gearing up for its world premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow on 7th March 2025, bringing an unsettling tale of grief, manipulation, and dark forces to audiences. Directed by David Luke Rees, the film features Sex Education’s Patricia Allison in a role that sees her entangled in a terrifying scheme, alongside Jeany Spark (Rings of Power), Rupert Young (Bridgerton), and Matthew Cottle (The Responder).

At its core, By the Throat is a horror-thriller built on psychological tension rather than overt spectacle. The film follows Lizzy (Allison), a young woman hired to care for Amy Cummings (Spark), a grieving mother struggling after the tragic death of her daughter. Left alone in a secluded countryside home while her husband Alex (Young) is away, Amy’s grief has spiralled into something far more dangerous. Tara Fitzgerald praises ‘poeticism’ of Pascal Bargamin
Tara Fitzgerald loved the “poeticism” of 'Portraits of Dangerous Women' director Pascal Bargamin. The 57-year-old actress plays Tina in the Swiss filmmaker’s comedy drama film about three women - school caretaker Tina, unhappy teacher Steph (Jeany Spark) and smart teenager Ashley (Yasmin Monet Prince) - who are thrown together when two of them both run over a dog in their separate cars and she admitted the helmsman’s passion and connection with his cast was one of the reasons why she said yes to the project. She exclusively told Bang Showbiz: “He’s very passionate. Super smart. He has a sort of poeticism and sort of understands artists. “I think that’s a very big draw about the film - it talks about artists. I think it’s a very important part of my life. And he has that sensitivity. “But he’s also really good at...

Portraits of Dangerous Women Review: A Heartfelt Exploration of Female Bonds
Image
Portraits of Dangerous Women transports viewers to a strange narrative realm that questions established storytelling conventions. The film, directed by Swiss filmmaker Pascal Bergamin, revolves around an unpleasant road event involving a dog that brings together three women: an unhappy teacher, a strange caretaker, and a troubled artist. This arrangement feels fanciful and perplexing, reminiscent of Jean-Luc Godard’s humorous narrative technique.

Bergamin balances between hilarity and poignant moments, reflecting contemporary cultural fears about connection and authenticity. The cinematography captures the grandeur of rural Britain, while the editing incorporates jarring shifts that mirror the characters’ shattered lives. This unique design highlights the themes of disconnection and unexpected friendship in the film.

Finally, Portraits of Dangerous Women bridges the gap between indie and mainstream cinema, providing a new viewpoint on how we relate to one another in an unpredictable world. It is a reminder of the film’s ability to mirror societal complexities,...

'I really enjoyed lugging this dead dog...' Tara Fitzgerald opens up on new movie Portraits of Dangerous Women
Tara Fitzgerald enjoyed "lugging" a dead dog around for her role in new movie 'Portraits of Dangerous Women'.The 57-year-old actress plays Tina in Swiss filmmaker Pascal Bergamin's comedy drama film about three women - school caretaker Tina, unhappy teacher Steph (Jeany Spark) and smart teenager Ashley (Yasmin Monet Prince) - who are thrown together when Steph and Tina both runover a dog in their separate cars.Tara enjoyed shooting the comedy scenes with the prop pooch, assuring any viewers that "no animals were harmed at all in the making of this film".Speaking exclusively to Bang Showbiz, she said: "I really enjoyed lugging this dead dog. No animals were harmed at all in the making of this film, or even used. But I loved that sequence and they’re comic inability to sort of deal with the situation.“Tina, who has actually lived through some pretty heavy things,...

Portraits of Dangerous Women review – dog car crash sets off baffling and peculiar drama
Three unlikely women are pitched together by a muddled plot with results that are short on both drama and comedy

This bafflingly peculiar and lifeless dramedy comes from Swiss film-maker Pascal Bergamin, who is based in Zurich and London and has released some English-language work in the past. This film has a rural British setting with British characters played by British actors, but it has the feel of something Google-translated from another project, perhaps with a European setting; there is a repeated and weirdly emphatic reference to two art dealers from the German town of Cottbus, mysterious individuals who never appear on screen, and whose existence does not serve any satisfying or interesting purpose.

But that objection could be raised against every single character in the film. A strange – and strangely unconvincing – event brings three women together. Steph (Jeany Spark) is an unhappy teacher; Tina (Tara Fitzgerald) is a...

Hapless Series Review: Hilarious British Comedy Meant to Test Boundaries
Image
As comedy has shifted the bounds of acceptable content, some shows continue to push the line between problematic and funny. Unlike some comedians insist, good comedy series like It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia push the boundary of what is allowed on television. Hapless, a new series streaming on Peacock, looks to bring the same energy from a crew of British comedians. It approaches its comedy with traditional sitcom approaches, but unlike many shows, it lets the humor spiral out of control. Most importantly, it gives its stars the material to milk the most laughs possible out of the punchlines. The show is very funny, even if it occasionally feels too similar to the Curb Your Enthusiasm or The League.

Hapless Plot

Hapless follows Paul Green (Tim Downie), a British journalist completing stories for The Jewish Enquirer. As Paul investigates various stories, he comes into contact with different aspects of Jewish and secular British culture.

Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
Peacock's Hapless Will Remove the Stress of Your Day, Week, Month, and Year!
Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
The ultimate cringe comedy has ended as Curb Your Enthusiasm took its final bow.

After 15 seasons of watching Larry David’s fictional self make a complete and utter ass of himself again and again, it might seem like the end is near for the medium.

Rest assured, this brand of humor will not disappear quickly, and streaming on Peacock today is Hapless, a British comedy from creator Gary Sinyor about -- to harken back to David’s Seinfeld -- nothing.

First of all, you should probably know that I am not generally a sitcom gal. My comedy needs to be brusque and sarcastic, borderline rude, but not raunchy.

As you can imagine, cringe comedies make my heart sing.

These comedies often feature somewhat neurotic people who have failed to fully mature as they live life. As a single adult without children, this speaks to me. How do you mature without kids?...

‘Hapless’ Review: British-Jewish Cringe Comedy on Peacock Plays Like U.K.’s Answer to ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
Image
At the end of each chapter of Hapless, Paul (Tim Downie) cracks open his laptop to scan the headlines of The Jewish Enquirer. Almost invariably, whatever piddling story he’s spent the past episode chasing has been outflanked by the likes of “Cloudy weather in Tel Aviv” (mind you, the show takes place in London) and buried among links to “exclusives” like “Twin brothers share bar mitzvah” and “Jewish Film Festival opens with Jewish-themed film.”

Even by the standards of “the fourth-largest Jewish publication in the U.K.,” these are nothing articles. But they’re right in line with the spirit of the series, an amusingly sour half-hour comedy about a petty man getting worked up over petty things, with petty results. Think of it as a British Curb Your Enthusiasm, if Larry David had been a total nobody forced to look for the “jangle” (Jewish angle) in every remotely...

2018 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See all 33 Best Limited Series contenders from ‘Alias Grace’ to ‘Waco’
Margaret Atwood
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for program nominations (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups.) Unlike the Oscars, Emmy voters do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Last year that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series in the last several years, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But this year there has been an uptick, with 33 such shows submitted. Even so, with six nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below are pretty good. We fill find out which half dozen...

Netflix Releases Trailer For Carey Mulligan's Murder Mystery Thriller Collateral
Netflix has released the trailer for their upcoming murder mystery thriller with Carey Mulligan called Collateral. The trailer for the series does a great job of setting up the premise...  who murdered the pizza delivery driver and why?

Set over the course of four days, the story centers on Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie, who refuses to accept that the murder is a random act of senseless violence and becomes determined to discover if there is a darker truth. Politician David Mars instantly is embroiled in the drama through his turbulent relationship with his troubled and unpredictable ex, Karen. All the while, Jane Oliver, a compassionate vicar, struggles to conceal her affair with the only witness to the crime.

The movie originally premiered on BBC Two, so this isn't a Netflix original. But, it does get the Netflix seal of quality in the United States. As a fan of crime thriller stories,...

The investigation builds in day two of Collateral. Spoilers ahead in our review…

This review contains spoilers.

See related Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 episodes 1 & 2 review: Orientation

Episode two of Collateral includes two songs - Jerusalem, sung by a group of drunk, braying soldiers in dress garb, and Big Yellow Taxi, sung by Joni Mitchell. Both about building things on green and pleasant land, the first is an anthem of nation, the second is an environmentalist protest. One looks forward to a future heaven on earth, the other laments the destruction of one that already existed.

Collateral is also a lament. It’s protest drama. Through the common-sense compassion of Carey Mulligan’s Kip, it protests the inhumanity by which people become items ‘processed’ at places like the Essex detention centre. And through the paired stories of Laurie and Sandrine this episode,...

David Hare’s latest BBC series may start with a murder, but the writer assures us that it isn’t just another crime drama. “There are no shots of computers or white boards,” says Hare in this foreword, announcing that he’s done away with “the usual apparatus of the police procedural” to show the impact one death has on a group of interconnected characters.

Collateral is about people caught in institutions and systems that at best, frustrate, and at worst, exploit them – in other words, precisely what TV’s best crime dramas (The Wire, Line Of Duty, The Shield) are about. What Hare means,...

Kenneth Branagh in Wallander (2008)
Kenneth Branagh fell into his love affair with the “Wallander” mysteries by Swedish author Henning Mankell (1948 – 2015) for “the sheer pleasure of the reading,” he told me over the phone. “It was novel by novel. I didn’t feel I’d met anyone quite like this before or this landscape.”

The novels are set in Sweden, in and around the town of Ystad, 35 miles south-east of the city of Malmö, in the southern province of Skåne. Da Vinci's Demons season 2 episode 8 review: The Fall From Heaven
Escapes, negotiations and llama bombs... this week's Da Vinci's Demons is a packed but somewhat meandering episode...

Review

This review contains spoilers.

7.8 The Fall From Heaven

Lorenzo the Magnificent seems to be surrounded by people who are more able to be leaders than himself. By virtue of his birth, he's the leader of Florence, but is he the best leader of Florence? As we saw last week, Claire and Carlo seem more able to guide the Medici Bank than Lorenzo. Guiliano was the more popular member of the Medici family. Lucrezia is more able to negotiate the politics and secrecy needed by a leader. Leonardo is Leonardo. This week, it's Duke Alfonso's wife, Ippolita Maria Sforza (Jeany Spark) who shows up our fearless, mostly-helpless leader with a daring scheme of her own.

With Piero Da Vinci and one of King Ferrante's own close advisers kidnapped by scenery-chewing French pirates, it's...
