“It’s an easy cop out to keep the kids close”: ‘Modern Family’ Fumbled Worse Than ‘The Office’ In the Laziest Storyline That Ruined the Final Seasons
Image
The Office and Modern Family will forever remain two of the most iconic comedy shows of all time. On one hand, you get the absurdly dysfunctional yet lovable paper-pushing crew of Dunder Mifflin, and on the other, you get the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan that proves families come in all shapes and sizes, no matter how chaotic they may be.

John Krasinski as Jim Halpert in The Office | Credits: NBC

Both shows have brought some of the most unforgettable storylines to comedy television. Whether it is Dwight and Jim’s love-hate relationship or Cam and Mitch’s adoption journeys, some plotlines will forever be stuck in mind. Then there are some that will stay with us for all the wrong reasons, like the growth of the Dunphy kids.

How Modern Family messed up the kids’ storylines

John Krasinski‘s Jim Halpert was always content with his life at Dunder Mifflin. After all,...

10 Horror Movies That Ripped Off Stephen King Stories
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.

Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

Fright Night (1985) It May Not Be A Copy Of King's Work, But You Can Definitely See His Influence

'I Can't Tell A Joke:' Modern Family Actor Believed She Wasn't Funny Enough To Star In The Hit Sitcom
Image
Modern Family was a sitcom game-changer which embraced a broader concept of family. While the show was a massive hit with fans during its 11 season run, Julie Bowen didn't think she had what it took to land the role of Claire Dunphy.

During an appearance on The Three Questions with Andy Richter Podcast, Bowen recalled how baffled she was when her agents mentioned Modern Family. "I was like, 'I can't tell a joke, I'm not funny, don't give me those three-jokes-a-page kind of things," she said before explain that her team had more faith in her ability than she did. "My managers were always very supportive, like, 'You know what? Helen Hunt isn't funny.' I go, 'What?' They're like, 'Not technically.' [So] I said, 'She just won like five Emmys.' They're like, 'Yes. So she's funny in a different way. She's not three-jokes-a-page funny. And yet she is wildly funny.

'It Felt a Little Hurtful': Modern Family Star Opens Up on Rejected Spinoff
Image
Four years after the end of Modern Family on ABC, actor Eric Stonestreet is reflecting on the spinoff that didn't come to be. While Stonestreet was hoping to co-star in a spinoff alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson which would have followed Cam and Mitch, the series was passed on by the network.

Per Deadline, Stonestreet discussed his desired Modern Family spinoff during an interview with Graham Bensinger. The actor recalled how there were plans to potentially develop a Cam and Mitch spinoff starting with a pilot script Stonestreet felt was really strong. Ultimately, the series was not picked up, a decision that Stonestreet suggested could be due to the perception that he and Ferguson were "the old guys," and thus undeserving of their own spinoff.

Speaking with People at the 2024 Drama Desk Awards, Hyland shared that she "would want to see a script first" before signing on for a Modern Family reunion project. "I think creatively for me, I would want to know what was going on with Haley. I want to see her career back and stuff and her creativity and I want her to be able to do both," she added. Best TV Shows Where Every Season Is Good
Image
It's not uncommon for fans to get invested in a new, interesting TV show, only for the series to go off the rails during its run. While this has happened to programs like Riverdale, Game of Thrones, and Prison Break, which all went downhill to varying degrees, a few great TV shows have never suffered from a bad season.

With masterful writers, talented actors, and consistently strong storylines, some TV series have maintained their high quality through multiple seasons. Popular and iconic shows like Breaking Bad and Friends kept fans interested through every episode. The likes of The Simpsons were so close to maintaining a perfect legacy only to be tarnished by a few of their many and more recent seasons.

Why Sarah Hyland Hated Her Character's Ending On Modern Family
Image
After 11 seasons of playing Haley Dunphy on Modern Family, Sarah Hyland hated the way her character's story ended. Haley was the eldest of the Dunphy children and cared more about her social life than school. This outlook was vastly different from those of her brother and sister, which only added more humor to the Dunphy household and their wild family life with funny uncles and a sassy grandfather.

While season 11 of Modern Family focused on character growth, like Alex’s new job opportunity and Gloria’s attempt at becoming a realtor, Haley’s story centered on her relationship instead. Haley’s jobs on Modern Family were just as interesting as the others, but the writers made an interesting choice for her character that Hyland wasn’t fond of.

Modern Family: Haley’s Final Romance Ruined Her Character
Image
Haley from Modern Family was renowned for her relationships, but Haley’s final romance ruined the development her character had made. Haley (Sarah Hyland) went from a popular high schooler to an adult confused about where she wanted her career to go in Modern Family and had plenty of learning moments along the way. Haley is the oldest of the Dunphy children and often tormented her younger siblings, Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould), but Haley was also very supportive and offered advice from her own experiences, particularly dating advice.

Haley’s own dating life was very varied throughout the documentary-style Modern Family, with on-and-off high school boyfriend Dylan (Reid Ewing) being the most frequent one. Haley and Dylan’s relationship was also meant to represent Haley’s parents, Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil’s (Ty Burrell), relationship as Claire’s father Jay (Ed O’Neill), never liked Phil the...

Emmy spotlight: ‘Modern Family’ deserves a return to Best Comedy Series race with its final season
Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
After “Modern Family” won a record-tying five consecutive Emmy victories for Best Comedy Series, the laffer soon fell out of favor with voters, dropping out of the main categories entirely last year. But it deserves a return to the race for its final season, the best since the show’s glory days.

See How Dare they? Our Editors’ way-too-early, gutsy Emmy predictions

For years, there wasn’t an eligible Emmy category “Modern Family” didn’t compete in, let alone win. In addition to its series victories, the show would regularly take home prizes for writing, directing and acting for Ty Burrell (2011 and 2014), Eric Stonestreet (2010 and 2012) and Julie Bowen (2011 and 2012), racking up 22 trophies out of 82 bids.

Its fortunes began to dip in the sixth season, where it went from receiving double-digit nomination tallies to just six. That dipped down to four in year seven, three in year eight and just one...

‘Modern Family’ Crew Talk Final Season & Potential Spinoffs – TCA
Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
The cast and creator of ABC’s long-running series Modern Family made a stop at the winter TCA press tour to reflect on the final season and on what’s to come in the future. The big question with any successful series is, of course, about potential spinoffs.

Executive producer Steven Levitan didn’t completely dismiss the possibility, “The short answer is right now there are no plans,” he said.

Levitan was joined on stage by the cast which included Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, Jeremy Maguire and Reid Ewing. Ed O’Neill was absent due to illness.

While many doors have opened for the cast thanks to the show’s success, all expressed interest in revisiting their characters. “Is the spinoff as good as Modern Family? Do we get to have the amazing writers?...

Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
As “Modern Family” prepares to wrap its 11-season run on ABC, co-creator Steve Levitan says there are no plans for a spinoff.

Instead, Levitan, co-creator Christopher Lloyd, their writers’ room and their cast have spent the past year and a half focused on creating a final season that would “build some things in that lead to that [ending] nicely,” Levitan said at the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show Wednesday.

The team behind the show didn’t know how it would end early on. There were originally talks that the sitcom could end after the 10th season, and if that came to fruition, Levitan said the ending of the series would have revolved around the birth of Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Dylan’s (Reid Ewing) twins. But once they made the deal to move beyond that into an 11th and final season “we were in unchartered territory.”

Don’t hold your breath for that “Modern Family” spinoff folks. Despite ABC chief Karey Burke’s hopes for some kind of continuation for the series, co-creator Steve Levitan said nothing has been discussed.

“The short answer right now is, there are no plans,” Levitan told TheWrap Wednesday during the Television Critics Association press tour. Burke has not been shy about acknowledging being somewhere between open to and dying for a spinoff.

When TheWrap followed up by asking which castmembers would be interested in seeing their characters continue, both Reid Ewing (Dylan) and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (Lily) raised their hands. It’s not surprising, considering that they’re the two youngest cast members, so at least there’s a long runway with those two.

‘Modern Family’: ABC Still Keen On Spinoffs; Karey Burke Won’t Let Hit Comedy Go Quietly
ABC is not going to let its comedy hit Modern Family go quietly as the long-running series enters its 11th and final season.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke admitted to Deadline on Monday that the current storyline of Hayley Dunphy, played by Sarah Hyland, and her newborn baby with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Dylan, played by Reid Ewing, seems tailor-made for a spinoff.

Modern Family, which also stars Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez, just launched production on the final season and co-creator/exec producer Steve Levitan said they “plan on finishing strong.”

Burke admitted that Levitan doesn’t yet want to discuss spinoffs. “I get smacked down every time I bring it up to Steve Levitan, so I’m going to stay quiet for a little while,” she said. “They’ve just started production on the final season...

Emmy spotlight: ‘Modern Family’ deserves a return to Best Comedy Series race with its best season in years
Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
After “Modern Family” won a record-tying five consecutive Emmy victories for Best Comedy Series, the laffer soon fell out of favor with voters, dropping out of the main categories entirely last year. But it deserves a return to the race for its 10th season, the best since the show’s glory days.

For years, there wasn’t an eligible Emmy category “Modern Family” didn’t compete in, let alone win. In addition to its series victories, the show would regularly take home prizes for writing, directing and acting for Ty Burrell (2011 and 2014), Eric Stonestreet (2010 and 2012) and Julie Bowen (2011 and 2012), racking up 21 trophies out of 67 bids. Yet its fortunes began to dip in the sixth season, where it went from receiving double-digit nomination tallies to just six. That dipped down to four in year seven, three in year eight and just one in year nine (for Half-Hour Sound Mixing). So to...

Modern Family Goes A Little Overboard Before Haley and Dylan's Perfect Wedding
Sarah Hyland
Dearly Beloved, we're gathered here today to watch a wedding go down in only the way a Modern Family wedding can go down.  Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Dylan (Reid Ewing) got married during tonight's episode of Modern Family, and of course it was a mess from start to finish. The whole thing started with Haley thinking she was in labor, but it turned out to be those pesky Braxton Hicks contractions that every pregnant woman has on TV shows. When the doctor mistook them for a married couple, Haley decided she wanted to be a married couple, so she proposed. They were originally going to just go to the courthouse and elope, with Alex (Ariel Winter) as the witness, and then Claire (Julie Bowen) got a hold of that idea...

Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Beatrice the Dog, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Reid Ewing, Frances Anderson, and Jeremy Maguire in Modern Family (2009)
Remember when we learned back in November that Modern Family character Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) was having a baby? It's just been revealed that she's not expecting just one baby, but two! Yep, you can expect to see twins on the show when Sarah's character gives birth.

However, it seems she wasn't ecstatic with the news at first. In a video shared by People, she can be see saying, "That's impossible, it's a mistake. I can't have twins. That's twice as many babies as we were expecting." Luckily, her mom Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) jumps in to offer comforting words of advice.

Not all fans were happy when the news originally dropped of Dunphy's pregnancy, with many stating they were not pleased with baby daddy Dylan (Reid Ewing). But only time will tell how it all pans out, and we can't wait to see some adorable twins running around with...

If you thought the Modern Family death was a surprise and then were shocked by the pregnancy twist, well, wait until you hear the latest: Haley Dunphy isn't pregnant with just one baby. In a sneak peek of the Wednesday, Jan. 9 episode posted by People, Haley and Dylan (Reid Ewing) visit the doctor with Claire (Julie Bowen) in tow and learn the big news. In episode seven of season 10, viewers learned Hyland's Haley is pregnant. And she didn't just learn in a typical fashion, it is Modern Family after all. Modern Family Twist: Who's Pregnant?
Shelley Long in Modern Family (2009)
First a death, now a new life.  Modern Family is clearly doing it all this season, as just a couple episodes after we learned that DeDe Pritchett (Shelley Long) had passed away, we've now found out that Haley (Sarah Hyland) is pregnant!  The news came out after Haley got her lipstick stuck all the way up her nose during a round of bumper cars with Dylan (Reid Ewing) and had to go to the emergency room, all because they were trying to prove they were grown up, mature adults by being the oldest people playing games at the carnival. Haley and Dylan (the father? probably?) had to find out from the nurse, who was a little weirdly casual when she realized her patient had absolutely no idea what was...

Not one but two exes mark the same spot when Modern Family‘s Haley lands in the hospital this week.

In the penultimate episode of Season 9 (airing tonight at 9/8c on ABC), Haley meets boyfriend Arvin’s parents (played by Scandal‘s Kate Burton and The Royals‘ Jim Piddock), but things take a most unexpected turn when she accidentally suffers a Nerp sticker-induced “overdose.”

Actress Holland Taylor has revealed she’s in a loving relationship with a woman — but don’t consider it a coming out for the 72-year-old. It’s more of a clarification, she said. In an interview with New York radio station Wnyc, Taylor said she’s considering marriage to her younger female partner — a luxury she would never have previously humored at her age. “Given my generation it would not be something that would automatically occur to me. But she’s mentioned it because just from a spiritual point of view, from a heart point of view,” Holland said of tying the knot.
