Modern Movie Masterpieces That Fans Went Into With Zero Expectations
Image
Many find it hard to believe that the 2020s are halfway over. Within the decade, audiences have witnessed many surprise hits in the theaters, including but not limited to a Top Gun legacy sequel and one of the best Godzilla movies ever made. Even though the 2020s have been heavily reliant on blockbusters, other periods within the 21st century have shown their fair share of surprisingly crowd-pleasing films.

From the 2000s onward, there has been an array of theatrically released movies that caught audiences off-guard with how high-quality and entertaining they were. Viewers initially had little to no expectations for these movie releases, yet strong word-of-mouth persuaded them to see what everyone was raving about. As a result, these modern movies, from legacy sequels to downright fun action and comedy films, are now considered masterpieces in their respective genres.

Alex Garland's 'Dredd' is Streaming On Max
Image
The 2012 comic book adaptation Dredd has become a streaming hit on Max. As more people revisited the film or experienced it for the first time, it moved up from the #8 spot on the top 10 movies list to #3. Karl Urban stars as the titular character in the film, which takes place in the violent and crime-ridden Mega City One. Cops called Judges, who serve as judges, juries, and executioners, patrol the streets and deliver brutal justice.

Urban's Dredd and his rookie psychic partner Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby) enter the dangerous territory of powerful drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), with a power struggle ensuing and the two Judges trapped in an apartment complex filled with hardened criminals. In the vein of the Indonesian action film The Raid: Redemption, Dredd traps its characters and creates tension in the confined environment with thrilling action sequences.

Comic Book Action Movie Dredd Starring Karl Urban Is Now Free to Stream
Image
Dredd has a complicated history with big screen adaptations, but the best version yet is now streaming completely free. Based on the 2000 Ad series of comic books, Dredd takes place in a dystopian future where human survivors are crammed into Mega Cities. The movie follows the titular Judge Dredd and his rookie Cassandra, as they investigate a vicious drug ring in Mega-City One's worst tower block. Dredd is now streaming for free, without the need for a subscription, on Tubi. Directed by Pete Travis, the movie features a surprising cast, which includes Karl Urban, Olivia Thirby, Lena Headey, Domnhall Gleeson, Wood Harris, and Langley Kirkwood.

The movie received good reviews upon its theatrical release in 2012, sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it failed to score big at the box office, earning just $41 million, against an estimated budget between $30-45 million. The official synopsis for the movie reads:

'Dredd' Spinoff Series 'Superfiend' Poster and Images Unveiled
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
While Dredd 3D fans fruitlessly petition for a sequel, and star Karl Urban continues to champion the idea, producer Adi Shankar has taken it upon himself to give fans what they want. He's created an 'unofficial' spinoff in the form of a new animated web series title Superfiend. And EW has our first look with the poster and four images.

It has been two years since Dredd 3D hit theaters, and while it wasn't a smash hit at the box office, it has spent the past 24 months accumulating a very strong fanbase. While no sequel has been officially green lit at this time, Adi Shankar is delving deeper into the mythology of 2000 Ad, the British comic that spawned it.

Superfiend will be inspired by the fan-favorite 'Dark Judges' storyline, and its intended as a sort-of sequel to Dredd 3D, though it is also a part of Adi Shankar's 'Bootleg Universe',...

'Dredd' Producer Will Launch 'Dark Judges' Miniseries Online
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
While fans still hold on to hope that a sequel to Dredd 3D will happen some day, producer Adi Shankar is giving fans a spinoff miniseries that will debut online for free later this month.

The seven-part mini-series will center on the Dark Judges from the original 2000Ad comic books, characters which Dredd 3D writer Alex Garland previously revealed would be the focus of a movie sequel, if it were to ever happen. The Dark Judges include Judge Death, Judge Fire, Judge Fear and Judge Mortis, who frequently clashed with Dredd and Cassandra Anderson in the comic book.

The mini-series won't be officially connected to the movie, but it is a part of Adi Shankar's Bootleg Universe, which includes the short films The Punsher: Dirty Laundry starring Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman, and Venom: Truth in Journalism, which featured Ryan Kwanten as Spider-Man's nemesis Eddie Brock/Venom.

'Dredd' Prequel More Likely Than a Sequel
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
Despite only earning $35 million worldwide in 2012, fans are still clamoring for a sequel to Dredd 3D. Star Karl Urban has said on a number of occasions that a sequel may still happen some day. However, the actor recently made an appearance at Chicago Comic-Con, where he revealed that now it's more likely that a prequel will be made, instead of a sequel.

"Why yes, there is a definite possibility. But, it is more likely that we will do the origins story with Dredd trekking through the cursed earth to find the first Chief Judge Fargo."

In the original Judge Dredd comics, Fargo was the first Chief Judge Dredd was cloned from. Fargo was never seen again after it was revealed that Dredd was his cloned. Max von Sydow portrayed Fargo in the 1995 Judge Dredd adaptation that starred Sylvester Stallone as the title character.

If the film does turn out to be a prequel,...

'Dredd' Sequel Is Possible Says Karl Urban
Karl Urban at an event for Star Trek Beyond (2016)
When it was released back in 2012, Dredd 3D did not have a great showing at the box office, taking in an abysmal $13.4 million domestically and $22.2 million in international markets for a worldwide total of $35.6 million. Despite these numbers, the comic book adaptation starring Karl Urban as Judge Dredd was well-received by critics and fans alike, many of whom have been clamoring for a sequel. During a recent press conference in Germany, Karl Urban revealed that a follow-up may actually happen.

The actor said that "conversations" are currently ongoing between Lionsgate and screenwriter Alex Garland. While he agreed that the box office performance was poor, he added that the studio has taken note that the movie has found an audience on Blu-ray and DVD.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard that a sequel may happen. Back in January 2013, Dredd 3D director Pete Travis revealed he isn't directing a follow-up,...

Dredd 3D Sequel Petition Launches Online
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
While attending Comic-Con 2013 last week, Dredd 3D star Karl Urban revealed that a sequel is still possible, urging fans to let their voices be heard. Dredd comic book publisher 2000Ad has stepped forward to create an online petition for the fans to sign, along with a Facebook page dedicated to the potential follow-up.

Although it was critically praised, Dredd 3D flopped, taking in just $13.4 million at the domestic box office and just over $36 million worldwide. Karl Urban starred as the title character, one of the many judges who lay down the law in the massive Mega City One, alongside his rookie partner Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby).

Karl Urban said last week that he has met with Dredd 3D writer-producer Alex Garland to discuss ideas for a potential follow-up. The actor also revealed during that interview that Blu-ray and DVD sales have been very high. Stay tuned to see if this...

Comic-con 2013: Dredd 3D Sequel Still Possible Says Karl Urban
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
Karl Urban was in San Diego yesterday to promote his new Fox series Almost Human, where he also revealed that a sequel to Dredd 3D may happen. The actor said that he has met with Dredd 3D writer-producer Alex Garland about a potential follow-up that he hopes will happen.

"It's certainly my hope that we get to make more. Clearly it has found an audience. The home video sales for Dredd 3D just went through the roof. I think it sold 650,000 units in the first week."

Despite receiving rave reviews from critics, Dredd 3D only took in $13 million at the domestic box office and $36 million worldwide, from a $45 million budget. However, the actor compared his action-thriller to another sci-fi classic which initially underperformed at the box office, Blade Runner, while urging fans of the movie to get involved.

"It's amazing how these things occurred. Not to compare it directly to Blade Runner,...

Exclusive: Pete Travis Talks Dredd 3D Blu-ray
Pete Travis in Vantage Point (2008)
Pete Travis Talks Dredd 3D, on Blu-ray and DVD today!

Dredd 3D was ignored during its September release by the general public, but those who saw it praised it as one of last year's best action movies. A visually stunning adaptation of the popular UK comic book series, star Karl Urban captured the character in a way that Sylvester Stallone failed to do in the 1995 original. And the fans loved it. If you missed it in theaters, now is your chance to finally see Dredd 3D, as it comes home on Blu-ray and DVD this week.

We recently caught up with the film's director, Pete Travis (Endgame; Vantage Point) to talk about this under-seen classic in the modern action genre.

Will there be a Dredd 2? Here is our conversation.

The Dredd comic books are quite a bit more popular in the UK than they are here in the States. Was...

Exclusive: Pete Travis Not Directing Dredd 2; the Director Remains Hopeful for a Sequel
Karl Urban in Dredd (2012)
Dredd 3D, an adaptation of the popular UK comic book series, was a criminally under-seen action film that quickly gained a cult following upon its short theatrical release back in September of last year. Fans loved it and want a sequel, which might still happen if the Blu-ray and DVD, released this past Tuesday, become a hit.

Director Pete Travis thinks there will be a follow-up. He is very hopeful, and revealed to us that writer Alex Garland and star Karl Urban have a trilogy in mind. That said, he doesn't think he will return to the helm, though.

"I don't think so. I really hope there is a second one. I just feel very lucky to have been involved in the first one. It has been a great experience for me. I read Alex Garland's script two years ago, and I feel in love with it then. I...

Dredd 3D Blu-ray Review
Lionsgate is releasing Dredd, one of my favorite sci-fi action films of 2012, on 3D Blu-ray on January 8. Directed by Pete Travis the film stars Karl Urban, Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Warrick Grier, and Porteus Xandau Steenkamp. This is the second adaptation of the comic, with the first being the 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone. Urban is great as Judge Dredd, and the film has all the perfect elements of a fun action film. Where it falls short is it's scope and the lack of a strong villain.

Dredd takes place in the radioactive wasteland of “Mega-City One,” an urban sprawl with people living on-top-of-one-another. Violence and crime are the norm, which has forced the creation of Judges that help fight crime. For those that do not know, a Judge is the combination of a cop and judge rolled into one. Instead of having to wait for a criminal to go to trial,...
