It’s bad news for fans of one of Netflix’s most popular shows, as a new production update suggests we could be waiting some time before the confirmed second season ever rolls around. Debuting back in June last year, the first season of the sci-fi superhero series Supacelltook audiences by storm, landing a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and finding millions of viewers as it took the #1 spot in Netflix's global Top 10.
Created and written by Andrew "Rapman" Onwubolu, Supacell stars Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan, and strives to tell a different kind of superhero story, dropping audiences in London where several normal people begin to exhibit strange powers.
Supacell was a huge success with both critics and audiences alike, with the show being renewed for a second season (a rarity on Netflix) back in August.

It is rare for a TV show to land a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score that sticks, but a Netflix take on the superhero genre, Supacell, was one of those rare projects that did everything right. Although it took a while for Season 2 to be greenlit by the streamer, fans finally learned the fate of the show in August 2024, but since then, updates have been scarce. Thanks to Radio Times, however, we have a slightly better idea of what to expect from the next season.
Supacell was created and written by Rapman (Andrew Onwubolu), and stars Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan. The show doesn’t tell a conventional superhero story that plays out in Marvel and DC movies, and that led to an incredibly well-received first season. You can check out the official synopsis below.

While there are a bunch of good Netflix shows coming in 2025, there were also a lot of good Netflix shows that were overlooked last year. We shared a list of the seven best Netflix shows you might have missed in 2024.
Overall, 2024 was a challenging year for new TV and film. Because Netflix and the other studios were unable to make a deal with the actors' and writers' unions, TV production was delayed for the majority of 2023. So, in 2024, there simply were fewer shows than fans were expecting. And yet, there were still several underrated series fans needed to watch. Well, now, it's time to get caught up before Netflix starts dropping even more big shows in 2025.
For some reason, Adeel Akhtar stars in three of the seven Netflix shows I picked. That was not intentional, but my guy is an incredible actor! Everything he's in is good!

We're getting closer to the end of the year, which means we're running out of time to highlight some of the most underrated shows of the year. For me, the end of the year is always a good time to look back and show a little love to the shows that didn't quite get the response, viewership, or respect from viewers, fans, and critics that they deserved.
If you missed any of the eight underrated shows of 2024, I highly recommend you give them a try when you have a chance. I guarantee you won't be too disappointed.
For this list, I only included new shows. Of course, there are a lot of underrated returning shows that had new seasons in 2024, but I wanted to share the new shows from 2024 that deserved more love and popularity from fans and critics!

Supacell is a 2024 British superhero television series, created and written by Rapman for Netflix. It was directed by Rapman and Sebastian Thiel, and premiered with six episodes on 27th June 2024.
Set in modern-day South London, the series is about a group of five ordinary black people, unified by family history of sickle cell disease. They unexpectedly develop superpowers and are pursued by a secret organisation who intends to control them.
Supacell features an ensemble cast including; Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan. The series was a difficult sell to US broadcasters such as HBO, ABC, and FX. Netflix took it on in late 2019, ahead of the release of Rapman’s feature-length film debut Blue Story.

Netflix is known as the biggest streaming service out there, with the largest number of subscribers and, of course, the largest number of original content. Whether you want movies, series, or animated series, regardless of the genre, Netflix is definitely going to have something for you to enjoy.
While the superhero genre has mostly been on the big screen, with Disney (MCU) and Warner (Dcu) being the biggest players on the market, superhero series are also present, but Disney and Amazon (with The Boys) are the biggest players in that aspect. Or, they have been, at least, until late June.
On June 27, 2024, Netflix released the superhero series Supacell, whose first season consists of six episodes. Focused on Black characters, the series has been praised by many and is slowly becoming a proper hit around the world after having taken the United Kingdom by storm. “What if I don’t like the guy I am now, bro” says Bosco (Malcolm Kamulete). “You have to learn to like him ‘cause you’re stuck with him” says Rusty (Keiren Hamilton-Amos). Watching family dynamics play out on screen never goes out of fashion and BBC’s latest drama Champion is proof of that.

Exclusive: Candice Carty-Williams was catapulted to fame by her hit novel Queenie, which made her the first Black author to win a top prize at the British Book Awards, but she tells Deadline adapting for TV has proved a seriously tough task.
The Channel 4-Hulu adaptation will air this year and Carty-Williams said she has been grappling to hold on to the true self of the character she created nearly a decade ago in the face of editorial wrangling.
She said she “can’t even explain how much harder it was” to adapt Queenie compared with writing her original BBC/Netflix series Champion, which drops on Netflix today.
“People buy something because they have an idea of what they want,” said the London-born auteur. “There was an idea of what they wanted to do with Queenie and for me it was like, ‘What?’. Of course it’s really...

It was three years ago that Avelino announced – his words – “the greatest rap debut in British history”. This Friday, the north-London-based artist’s album is released at last. So, what took him so long? “You can’t rush greatness,” he says with a cool shrug. In the event, God Save the Streets could hardly have been better timed. Out less than a month before the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, it is loaded with nuanced ruminations on poverty, mental health and authority, with the new monarchy serving as a dubious backdrop. The title’s obvious reference to the Sex Pistols’ 1977 single “God Save the Queen” is deliberate. “Rap is the new punk,” Avelino declares.

“Currently we are keeping firmly planted in the U.K.,” Luke Hyams, head of YouTube Originals Emea, told Variety. “We are reviewing plans of expansion into other territories, but right now, for this year and the beginning of next year, we really are focusing on the U.K.”
The fall documentary season begins with four-parter “Together We Rise: The Uncompromised Story of Grm Daily.” Launching Sept. 28, it tells the story of YouTube channel Grm Daily, a leading platform for various U.K. rap genres, and its founder Posty, the young, Black, British entrepreneur.
