Michael B. Jordan's Remake of Classic Heist Thriller Loses Lead Actress
Image
Sometimes the initial cast of a production isn't the final cast. Sure, many have to go through auditions and are chosen based on that, previous performances, and occasionally, who they're connected to. However, things happen, and some actors or even members of the crew decide to exit. Think about how many times productions change showrunners and directors, or the various times you've heard an actor leaving, either due to schedule conflicts or creative differences. The latest news of departures stems from Michael B. Jordan's upcoming second remake of the classic 1968 heist thriller The Thomas Crown Affair.Deadline reported that Taylor Russell has decided to exit the project due to creative differences.

The actress was supposed to star opposite Jordan in the remake of the classic film starring Western actor Steve McQueen. In the role, Russell was an independent investigator contracted by a bank's insurance company to investigate a heist...

Michael B. Jordan's New Crime Thriller Remake Loses Leading Star Over Creative Differences
Image
The Michael B. Jordan-directed new crime thriller loses its lead star. After Sinners, Jordan is scheduled to helm and star in a new movie adaptation of The Thomas Crown Affair, set to arrive in theaters on March 5, 2027. The movie will mark the second adaptation of Norman Jewison's 1968 original of the same name, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

Previously, John McTiernan brought forth a version with Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo, and Denis Leary. With a script from The Fall Guy's Drew Pearce, Jordan's new version casts Bones and All's Taylor Russell to play the insurance investigator who's sent to track down the one responsible for the bank heist but ends up falling in love with Jordan's painting-stealing billionaire.

According to Deadline, Russell has exited The Thomas Crown Affair over creative differences. Production continues in London while the studio looks for her replacement.

Taylor Russell Exits ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’
Image
Exclusive: Taylor Russell has exited The Thomas Crown Affair, the Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of the classic Steve McQueen film. Sources said the exit was due to creative differences. The studio is recasting the role as production continues in London.

Russell was set opposite Jordan in the role of an insurance investigator who suspects that an adventurous banking executive is pulling off ambitious heists, and they develop sparks between them. That role was played by Faye Dunaway opposite McQueen in the 1968 original, and by Rene Russo opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1999 version.

Russell will next be seen starring in the Korean thriller Hope by Na Hong-jin opposite Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Hoyeon. She can also be seen opposite David Johnson in the upcoming Frank Ocean film, and she’s in talks to star in a remake of Single White Female opposite Jenna Ortega for Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures.

This South Korean Horror Movie With 99% On Rotten Tomatoes Is A Must-Watch For Fans Of The Genre
Image
Korean auteur Na Hong-jin's earliest films — "The Chaser" and "The Yellow Sea" — brilliantly spotlight his propensity for dynamic filmmaking. After all, Na's artistic brand has always been intense and visceral, combining explosive emotion with brash storytelling that doesn't believe in subtlety or restraint. While such a chaotic approach would end up feeling disjointed in the hands of a lesser director, Na's ability to balance method and madness leads to wonderfully rich stories oozing with life and personality.

So when Na decided to helm an atmospheric rural-horror in 2016, his impulses were perfectly suited for a riveting story that mixes an unconventional police procedural with an even weirder supernatural thriller. This is "The Wailing," Na's astonishing portrayal of evil that constantly oscillates between authentic and implausible, embracing a frenetic energy that can be overwhelming to keep up with. The film's Cannes premiere had already established "The Wailing" as a critical darling,...

A 9-Year-Old Horror Movie With 99% Rt Score Rises High on Max Streaming Charts
Image
The horror genre has always been popular, as it's one of the most prolific and diverse genres, with multiple subgenres and varieties. While Hollywood has released a series of iconic horrors, foreign markets have produced excellent originals that are often overlooked or remade.

One such example is The Wailing. The South Korean horror is extremely overlooked, despite receiving high praise and becoming one of the biggest hits of the year in its release country. Nine years later, The Wailing is now making a huge impact on the charts on Max, FlixPatrol reveals.

The Wailing is currently No. 2 in the charts worldwide, just behind Robert De Niro's new gangster drama The Alto Knights. It beat titles like How to Train Your Dragon 2, Micky 17, and Mountainhead, the new Steve Carell film from Succession creator.

The Wailing premiered on June 15 on Max, and it started topping the charts instantly all over Central and South America.

Body Swaps and Bloodshed Arrive on Arrow This June

Arrow has revealed its June slate, and it’s a characteristically eclectic mix of the brutal, the bizarre and the barely-seen. From grisly Korean thrillers and resurrected Japanese ghost tales to European horrors and cult cinema favourites, the curated streaming platform continues to expand its niche appeal with a line-up tailored to lovers of the extreme and unconventional.

Kicking off the month is Devils, a slick South Korean thriller featuring a body swap between a detective and the serial killer he has spent years chasing. It arrives alongside Body Parts, a five-part anthology soaked in ritualistic horror and dread, both streaming from 6 June. Together, they lead Arrow’s newly launched Killer K-Horror season, a collection that also includes the underseen zombie satire Zombie for Sale.

From 9 June, viewers can return to Takashi Miike’s gonzo Western Sukiyaki Western Django, the 2007 cult mash-up that blends Leone-styled shootouts with operatic samurai drama.

15 Must-Watch Mockumentary Horror Movies
Image
Found footage is a horror movie subgenre that has always teetered on the line between fact and fiction, using techniques like handheld cameras and unscripted dialogue to add an extra level of authenticity to the film. Horror films like The Blair Witch Projectand Cannibal Holocaust proved how convincing the concept of found footage can be, leading their audiences to believe the events seen on screen happened. A found footage offspring, known as mockumentaries, is made in the style of a documentary. These features analyze a fictitious person or event using "personal recorded footage" and "interviews" as a means to tell their stories.

The mockumentary format has been used in a variety of film genres. However, horror has been able to effectively use this setup to a point where it would not be a stretch to stream one of these movies and believe that everything unfolding on screen has happened. Whether...

Without further ado, here is a countdown of 35 films that are easily described as much anticipated, in random order.

‘Asura’ Netflix Cast And Character Guide
Image
Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest Netflix series, Asura, has been received very well – thanks to the brilliant storytelling, masterful direction, and fantastic acting performances by the cast. In this article, we’re going to look into who is playing what in the show and talk about the character for a bit.

Jun Kunimura as Kotaro

Veteran actor Jun Kunimura — whose most famous work is playing the Japanese priest in Korean director Na Hong-Jin’s The Wailing (2016), which I considered to be the greatest horror movie of this generation — plays Kotaro in Asura. The show begins with Takako discovering her seventy-something father – Kotaro – being unfaithful to her mother for a long time and even having a child. Kunimura is quite fantastic in the role, where most of the acting is done by expression and not words.

Keiko Matsuzaka as Fuji

Best Korean Action Movies, Ranked
Image
In the 21st century, South Korean cinema has experienced unprecedented success, both in terms of international acclaim and box office profits. One reason for South Korea's cultural dominance has been the country's ability to churn out high-octane action thrillers that feature formal proficiency combined with gruesome subject matters. South Korean cinema has found a cult audience in the United States among cinephiles seeking to escape the sanitized nature of mainstream Hollywood cinema.

After decades of little international attention, South Korean cinema began to make a global splash in the late 1990s through a movement now known as New Korean Cinema. This collection of films became renowned for using the genre to explore social issues affecting South Korean society. Since the birth of New Korean Cinema, directors such as Park Chan-wook, Kim Jee-woon, and Na Hong-jin have created some of the best action thrillers of the 21st century. Oldboy, I Saw the Devil,...

Alicia Vikander, Soon to Be Seen in ‘The Last Day’ and ‘Hope,’ Talks Motherhood and Work: ‘I Need to Do Both’
Image
Alicia Vikander opened up about her family life at the Zurich Film Festival, where she received the Golden Eye Award.

“Sometimes, [preparing for a role] is boring and tedious. My three-year-old is wondering what’s going on, because I’m locking the doors and talking to myself,” she laughed.

“When I am done, I get very tired. Acting is physically and emotionally draining. I have two young children now, I was pregnant when making that film and that’s where most of my time goes when I am not working,” said the Swedish actor, fresh off dystopian sci-fi “The Assessment.”

Vikander’s growing multilingual family – the actor is married to Michael Fassbender – aroused festival audience’s curiosity.

“My six-month-old doesn’t speak much, but my three-year-old speaks Portuguese, English and Swedish. Recently, he was hanging out with some kids and now there’s also a bit of Spanish. He’s giving me language courses now!

October on the Criterion Channel Includes F/X Scares, Witches, Japanese Horror, Stephen King & More
Image
The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.

Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

Five Found Footage Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.

This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

‘I, the Executioner,’ Cannes Midnight Screening Thriller, Picked Up by Korea’s Cj Enm
Image
Rights to “I, The Executioner,” which will premiere as a Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year, have been picked up by South Korea’s Cj Enm.

The crime-action film directed by Ryu Seung-wan (also written Ryoo Seung-wan) is a sequel to Ryu’s 2015 hit “Veteran” and in Korea goes by the title “Veteran 2.”

Few details of the story have yet been disclosed, but Cj describes the film as “combining Ryu’s trademark action with observations and messages about social change.” Ryu last year enjoyed major box office success with crime comedy “Smugglers.”

Hwang Jung-min, who recently enjoyed box office success in “12.12: The Day,” reprises his role from “Veteran.” He is joined in the sequel by Jung Hae-in (“Tune in for Love”) as a new member of the film’s Violent Crime Investigation Squad.

“I, The Executioner” was produced by Filmmaker R & K, the production shingle owned...

Best Korean Movies To Stream on Netflix
Image
Netflix has become one of the premiere streaming sites for carrying both existing and original content from across Asia. This is especially true when looking at Korean movies and original series (such as Mask Girl and Song of the Bandits), often dominating the rating charts. Continuing on our #tributetonetflix, we wanted to highlight some of the best films on the platform you can watch right now. Here are the best Korean movies currently available for streaming on Netflix.

*The following applies to the availability in the US

1. The Wailing (2016) by Na Hong-jin

“The Wailing” features many grotesque scenes. Cannibalism, violent killings, people acting like zombies, the terribly depicted skin infection, the cock killing ritual, and the amounts of blood all point towards an extreme horror film. The same applies to Hyo-jin's behavior, which is very hard to watch, particularly during the ritual scene. The sequences involving the dog and the...

Film Analysis: The Chaser (2005) by Na Hong-jin
Image
The case of Yoo Young-chul was one that really shocked Korea. The 24-years-old man at the time of his arrest (2004) admitted to the murders of multiple people, mostly prostitutes and wealthy old women, and the Seoul Central District Court convicted him of 20 murders, although one case was dismissed when it was identified as being committed by another serial killer, Jeong Nam-gyu. Yoo burned three and mutilated at least 11 of his victims and admitted that he ate the livers of some of them. Yoo explained his motives in front of a TV camera saying “Women shouldn't be sluts, and the rich should know what they've done.” Three years after his sentence was carried out in 2005, Na Hong-jin came with one of the most impressive debuts in the history of Korean cinema, and one of the top crime thrillers ever to come out of the country (and the world), based on his story.

The Wailing (2016)
Film Review: Exhuma (2024) by Jang Jae-hyun
The Wailing (2016)
Horror, long a staple and favoured genre for Asian filmmakers, has seen dwindling returns in Korea of late. Sure, there's a number of works in the genre that come out each year, but none have made quite the positive impact on the audience, critics or the box office since “The Wailing” all the way back in 2016. Director Jang Jae-hyun seems to have made it his mission to keep horror alive and kicking, debuting with “The Priests”, a well-made tale that explored Christian exorcisms, before following it up with “Svaha: The Sixth Finger”, which explored new religions and cults in the guise of horror. While both those features saw mixed reactions from the audience, Jang continues to produce scary stories with “Exhuma”, his latest work which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival before a wide release. Received with much enthusiasm from the audience, the release quickly became the highest grossing Korean film of 2024 so far.

‘Exhuma’: Let’s Dig Into the Surprise Success of South Korea’s Biggest Hit of the Year (So Far)
Image
Four weeks after its initial release, South Korean horror film “Exhuma” is still burning through the country’s box office. “Pamyo,” as it’s known in Korea (which directly translates to “exhumation for relocation or cremation”), has resonated in a major way with audiences who have shown up in droves to see the story of a shaman named Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and the wandering spirits she takes on with Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun), her protégé. This week: it expands in the United States.

Just one week into its release, “Exhuma” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024 so far, knocking the Timothée Chalamet-starring “Wonka” off the top spot following its delayed release there. Chalamet’s other big film of the moment, “Dune: Part Two,” placed second in Korea for three successive weekends in the wake of “Exhuma” too.

That means that, nearly a month in, “Exhuma” has made $67.8 million with sales of 9.3 million tickets,...

10 Great Movie Directors Who Haven’t Worked In Years
Image
Many great movie directors take long breaks from filmmaking, which can lead to higher demand for their films. Even highly successful directors can have their careers derailed by one poorly received feature film. The absence of great directors affects not only audiences but also the actors and professionals they've collaborated with.

It can come as a surprise that there are many great movie directors who haven't worked in years. Whatever their reasons for going on a years-long hiatus from filmmaking, the prolonged absence of great directors can cause not just speculation about their personal lives, but also typically results in higher demand for their films. It's actually not uncommon for even highly successful film directors to take long-term breaks from their duties in the entertainment industry.

Even the best movie directors of all time aren't immune to taking such long breaks. Whether it's a case of burnout from the notoriously demanding job,...

Best International Thrillers You Haven't Seen
Image
Thrillers are a universal genre made by every single film industry around the world. North, South, East, and West, regardless of location, people everywhere enjoy the heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat suspense of a well-crafted thriller.

Sadly, some of cinema's greatest international thrillers have gone unseen by the masses. Numerous world-renowned thrillers have significantly less than 100,000 ratings on Letterboxd. To put this into perspective, recently released thrillers such as David Fincher's The Killer and Saw X already have in excess of 200,000 ratings on Letterboxd. From modern gems like The Chaser and The Guilty to classics such as The Vanishing and High and Low, many acclaimed international thrillers need more exposure to a wide audience.

Why You Should Add The Medium (2021) To Your Halloween To Watch Movie List
Image
Horror and overall scary movies never go out of fashion. There are new stories being released almost every month of the year, especially during the spooky season. Because of this, there are so many new productions that sometimes, a lesser-known one can fall between the cracks, and many don’t get to appreciate a good bone-chilling story. This was the case in the Thai movie The Medium.

The movie had some buzz when it came out, as the movie premiered at Bucheon Fantastical International Film Festival and won The Best of Bucheon prize. However, it is still unfamiliar to a lot of people. With a high score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, The Medium is a haunting and refreshing take on exorcisms and found-footage movies. Here is why you should add this movie to your Halloween watch list — and it might make you want to dive deeper into international horror films.

Alicia Vikander on Having Fun With Jude Law on ‘Firebrand,’ and Why She and Husband Michael Fassbender Chose to Move to Lisbon
Image
Alicia Vikander has received much love and the President’s Award for lifetime achievement at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival during its 57th edition, which opened on Friday.

The Oscar winner got a very warm reception from attendees of the opening ceremony, charming the audience by mentioning that her film A Royal Affair had shot in the Czech Republic, that she had enjoyed her time in the country and that it had been “pivotal” for her career. Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, starring Vikander as Queen Catherine Parr, the final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law, then kicked off this year’s fest.

In a wide-ranging roundtable conversation with The Hollywood Reporter and other media representatives, Vikander shared how she decides which roles to take on and why learning lines is so important for her. She also discussed her producing work, including future projects, film festival venues Cannes and Busan,...

Alicia Vikander Says Her Role in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘The Assessment’ Is ‘Pretty Wild,’ and ‘Scares’ Her
Image
Alicia Vikander, the Swedish actor who won an Oscar for her role in “The Danish Girl” in 2015, has taken on a remarkable range of characters in recent years – but is still stretching her boundaries, she says.

Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where she presented the historical drama “Firebrand” on opening night, Vikander says she’s now prepping for films that offer distinctly different challenges than her turn as Catherine Parr, the only one of Henry VIII’s six wives to outlive the marriage.

One character she admits she’s still deciphering is the central figure in the upcoming sci-fi feature “The Assessment,” a feature project with Paris-based writer/director Fleur Fortuné.

“I got the script sent to me,” says Vikander, adding that something about the story instantly intrigued her. Details are still under wraps, she says, but the film is set in a world of the near future...

Cannes: Plus M Entertainment CEO on Turning the Family Firm Into a Korean Content Powerhouse
Image
South Korean executive Jeongin Hong never planned to become a movie mogul. After studying economics at Princeton and putting in distinguished stints in private equity at Boston Consulting and Goldman Sachs (“I’m a science and economics guy,” he says), he was lured back to the family business in 2015. His family’s firm happens to be JoongAng Group, arguably Korea’s largest media conglomerate. Founded by Hong’s grandfather, Hong Jin-ki, the company publishes Korea’s most widely read newspapers, owns a university and a skyscraper, and controls major broadcaster Jtbc, among many other business lines. Hong was initially pulled back into the patrilineal corporate fold to help with corporate strategy; but in 2017 he proposed to his elder brother, JoongAng Group’s current CEO, Jeongdo Hong, that the time was right to further capitalize on the Korean content wave still sweeping the globe by restructuring their conglomerate’s collection of...
