CBC has just renewed five of its original series. Among the shows set to return is the fan-favorite police procedural Wild Cards, starring Riverdale alum Vanessa Morgan.
Per Deadline, CBC has handed out a massive two-season renewal for Wild Cards, which is made by Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures, and Piller/Segan in association with The CW. The renewal comes ahead of the U.S. air date for the Season 2 finale of Wild Cards, which is set to premiere on The CW on May 7. CBC's renewal will keep Wild Cards on the air through its fourth season, with the next two seasons set to comprise 10 episodes each.
CBC also renewed its new procedural hit Saint-Pierre (for Season 2), the police procedural Allegiance (Season 3), the family drama Heartland (Season 19), and the globally popular Murdoch Mysteries (Season 19). “Queen of the Ring” starts in the middle of a wrestling match, as an athlete musters all their determination to take control of a pivotal career match-up. The film then goes into flashback to tell the story of said athlete, Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards), a female pioneer in the male-dominated professional wrestling world. Writer and director Ash Avildsen tries to show Burke’s life as a historical epic of triumph and perseverance, but he neglects to infuse it with credible dialogue or stylistic specificity.
Spanning two decades in Burke’s life, from her start in the 1930s to that aforementioned championship title in the 1950s, “Queen of the Ring” has a lot of story to cover. Avildsen, working from Jeff Leen’s book of the same name, goes about it doggedly, but with no finesse nor flair. His script is the type where characters are introduced by their full...

There’s a wave of new and intelligent life at the indie box office this weekend post-Academy Awards after the traditionally slow, slow period for new openings. There have been a smattering of interesting films (Universal Language for one) but things have absolutely picked up with a George R.R. Martin short story on screen, a nursing home creep-out starring John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush, the latest Atom Egoyan film, a duo that landed really well at Cannes, a Bruno Dumont sci-fi, a Bruce Labruce sex romp, an Italian box office hit and more.

Queen of the Ring star Emily Bett Rickards isn't scared to face wrestling's rabid fanbase. The former Arrow ensemble member will draw their attention when she takes to the silver screen as wrestling legend Mildred Burke in an upcoming biopic, but she developed a knack for braving backlash during her time in the CW's DC universe as Felicity Smoak.
"When I was on Arrow, I quickly realized how passionate comic book fans can be," said the CWveteran in an interview with TV Insider, confessing "At one point, I had to have a really long talk with my therapist, asking, 'Okay, so what is all this energy? I don’t really understand it.'"
The actress claims she had to develop "skin like a rhino" and "heart like a rose" to be able to achieve that understanding. She now acknowledges criticism often stems from passion, not malice alone.

The Wild Cards series has performed well in the ratings for The CW, but the show originates in Canada on CBC. So, there's no guarantee that the show will be renewed regardless of how good the U.S. ratings are or, if CBC renews it, that The CW will air it. Will we see season three of Wild Cards, or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned.

We’ve got our first look at Wild Cards Season 2, as the trailer hints at the great action to come!
For those who missed it in 2024, Wild Cards is a Canadian TV show originally airing on the CBC network. The CW acquired it to air, aided by how star Vanessa Morgan had starred in the network’s long-running hit Riverdale.
The plot is a classic one for a caper show. Max Mitchell (Morgan) is a con artist, albeit one with a moral code. She’s busted by the cops and arrested by Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti), a former top homicide detective, until he was busted down to boat patrol after being framed for having drugs.
Max manages to cut a deal with the cops and uses her skills to help catch other crooks, with the condition that Cole is her handler. Season 1 had the pair working together, aided by Max’s father,...

The procedural drama Wild Cards on the CW was green-lit for a second season in May, but like so many CW shows before, it floated in the bubble about whether the network would be canceled. For fans of this intriguing Canadian-us show, it was a relief.
Season 2 of Wild Cards is currently in production and will premiere on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the US. Not only will we have more crime-fighting stories led by Max and her partner, Ellis, who is portrayed by Vanessa Morgan of Riverdale and Giacomo Gianniotti of Reign, respectively. A handful of guest stars will also join the roster.
It's big news, considering we didn't have much coverage between the renewal and the guest star update. The CW has a history of keeping mum on show spoilers, even when updates are considered spoilers. Wild Cards has followed the same pattern, so we'll take what we can get regarding its content.

TV networks traditionally hold off on shows for midseason, including returning ones. This was bigger after the 2023 Hollywood strikes affected the networks. Thus, a few decided to hold off on full seasons of shows until winter.

Cyberpunk and martial arts are two facets of movie genres that might not have a lot in common on the surface. However, they make for an incredible combination. Juxtaposing the technological and virtual realities of cyberpunk with the physical discipline and technique of martial arts is always engaging. Many of the best cyberpunk sci-fi movies are from the 1980s and 1990s, as this was when the internet was taking hold, and both filmmakers and audiences were beginning to fear what this meant for society. However, there are just as many memorable modern additions to the genre.
These action films within the cyberpunk genre range from campy martial arts movies to serious explorations of fighting techniques with deep social and cultural messages. Many of these projects blur the line between action, sci-fi, cyberpunk, and martial arts, using the features of each of these topics interchangeably. The futuristic worlds the characters belong...

Wrestling pics are having a moment. Last year saw the excellent, if unjustly ignored, The Iron Claw, about the ill-fated Von Erich brothers. Now comes Ash Avildsen’s hugely entertaining, old-fashioned biopic about Mildred Burke. If you don’t know who Burke is (and the vast majority probably don’t), this film aims to correct that. A pioneer of the sport who became the first million-dollar female athlete in history, Burke was a three-time women’s world champion from the 1930s through the 1950s, a time when women’s wrestling wasn’t even legal in most of the country. Her story fairly demands to be told, and Queen of the Ring, which served as the opening night film of the 39th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, largely does it justice.

Kelli Berglund, who plays the heroic champion pro wrestler Crystal Tyler on Netflix's Heels, takes a turn as a villainous wrestler in Queen of the Ring. Written and directed by Ash Avildsen, Queen of the Ring is an upcoming film chronicling the life and career of Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards), the first million-dollar female pro wrestler who was a superstar in the 1940s and 1950s. Into the Badlands is “a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series” created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The AMC series is set in a dystopian future with humanity in ruins because of wars, and it follows the story of Sunny, a fierce warrior who rescues a teenager with a bounty on his head. They both journey through a dangerous territory known as the Badlands to survive. Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu in the lead role, with Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Oliver Stark, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost starring in supporting roles. Ricky Whittle left The 100 due to conflicts with showrunner Jason Rothenberg, leading to Lincoln's exit in season 3. Whittle endured mistreatment from Rothenberg, prompting him to choose the role of Shadow Moon in American Gods. Despite a toxic workplace on The 100, Whittle's departure ultimately allowed him for a fulfilling career shift.
After being a regular character, Lincoln, The 100's Trikru warrior, was killed off in season 3 because actor Ricky Whittle refused to continue working with showrunner Jason Rothenberg. Coming shortly after the controversial death of Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Lincoln's exit cemented The 100 season 3 as being one of its more controversial and least-liked chapters. Lincoln entered a relationship with The 100's Octavia Blake (Marie Avgeropoulos) in season 1, elevating him to an important part of the cast in season 2. At least, thats what was supposed to happen until personal conflicts got in the way.

Tng could get a successful big-screen reboot like The Original Series thanks to modern Hollywood actors. Recasting Tng crew is tough as original cast members were irreplaceable. But new actors could coexist. Tng's best moments revisited with possible modern actors for revamped roles, bringing new energy.
Who would play the crew of the USS Enterprise-d if Star Trek: The Next Generation were rebooted as a new movie? With J.J. Abrams' blockbuster films, Star Trek: The Original Series has already gotten a successful big-screen reboot, and Tng could benefit from the same treatment. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng had an amazing cast of characters who became just as popular as Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his Enterprise crew. Recasting the Tng crew would be no easy feat, as many of the actors came to embody the characters they played.

Prime Video's latest series, Fallout, has been one of their biggest shows, impressing audiences with its deep storytelling and incredible world-building. The program follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, which has been ravaged by a nuclear war, living underground to avoid the threat of radiation sickness, as well as mutants, and bandits. Audiences enjoying Fallout would also be wise to check out these other shows, that have equally excelled in the sci-fi genre.
These sci-fi series are perfect for Fallout fans, following similar themes to Prime Video's latest offering. They either capture an almost identical tone to Fallout, reflecting the series' same dire sense of hopelessness in the wake of a devastating conflict, or represent the same strong commitment to building an expansive world.

TV plot twists that aren't planned ahead of time can feel cheap and leave dedicated viewers feeling unsatisfied. Unexpected plot twists can come out of left field and lack a solid foundation, like the ones in Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars. Some TV shows introduce plot twists that were not properly hinted at or developed, leaving viewers questioning if they were planned in advance.
Plot twists can make or break TV shows, and the well-executed ones often elevate their series and make them more memorable overall — but there are some massive TV turns that clearly weren't planned ahead of time. When TV shows include plot twists for the sake of shock value, it can feel cheap to dedicated viewers. This can make such developments memorable for the wrong reasons, landing them among the worst TV plot twists of all time.

Sp Media Group, Republic Pictures and Paramount Global Distribution present The Painter, combining a high-octane spy-thriller with a complex family drama featuring the talents of Jon Voight, Charlie Weber, Maidson Bailey and Marie Avgeropoulos. Directed by Kimani Ray Smith, who exploded onto the festival circuit in 2011 with the short film Suffer in 2011, and has since directed two feature films and a handful of TV episodes, including Van Helsing and Fort Salem. The Painter was written by Brian Buccellato, who has written some impressive short films, like Sons of the Devil in 2014 and Ark Exitus in 2020, as well as collaborating with Sp Media Group and Jon Voight in 2022, to write the critically panned Dangerous Game: The Legacy Murders.

Awkwardly arriving the very same day as “The Bricklayer,” with Aaron Eckhart as an ex-CIA agent with the titular dayjob, “The Painter” has Charlie Weber as ex-cia agent who has taken up … well, you can guess. This more humbly scaled actioner likewise finds its uber-tough erstwhile operative reluctantly forced back into activity amid a conspiratorial hail of bullets. From that shared starting point, Brian Buccellato’s script finds its own path. But neither he nor director Kimani Ray Smith locate much credibility or suspense in an uninspired tale that also features Jon Voight, as well as Madison Bailey from the Netflix series “The Outer Banks.” Lacking in most departments beyond decent pacing and adequate technical polish, this forgettable thriller launches in limited U.S. theaters Jan. 5, and on digital platforms Jan. 9.

"Tell me about the people who came to kill me." Paramount Movies has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller titled The Painter, made by the filmmaker / stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith. This is yet another one of these dull action movies being dumped right onto home video / VOD right away. An ex-CIA operative turned painter is thrown back into a dangerous world when a mysterious woman from his past resurfaces. Now exposed and targeted by a relentless killer and a rogue black ops program, he must rely on skills he thought he left behind in a high-stakes game of survival. Charlie Weber stars as Peter, with Jon Voight, Marie Avgeropoulos, Luisa d'Oliveira, Leah Gibson, and Madison Bailey. This looks like the most obvious & generic action plot ever, a must-save-a-girl-by-killing-everyone repeat and nothing else. // Continue Reading ›...

King of Killers sets itself apart from the John Wick franchise with its unique premise of a group of assassins trapped in a game of life and death against a master manipulator. The movie explores power dynamics and cooperation during moments of distress, adding depth to the action. "He's crazy... like me!" This already debuted in the US last month. Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed a second trailer for the sci-fi fantasy action martial arts movie made by Greek-American filmmaker Dimitri Logothetis (director of 2018's Kickboxer: Retaliation) called Jiu Jitsu. It's opening in the UK in just a few more weeks, which is why there is another trailer. Described as "basically Predator meets Mortal Kombat meets National Treasure," the action film is about an ancient order of Jiu Jitsu fighters who face a vicious race of alien invaders in the form of a fighter named Brax. They must battle him for the survival of Earth. That's all you really need to know besides the killer cast: Nicolas Cage along with Alain Moussi, Frank Grillo, Rick Yune, Marie Avgeropoulos, Juju Chan, and Tony Jaa. If this still looks like something you might enjoy, then rent it today and have fun!
