Remakes and especially reboots rarely make sense. There are exceptions to the rule that have the aura of timeless stories that need to be retold from time to time, maybe even for each new generation. But still, reboots are usually uncalled for. The new, uncalled-for reading of The Crow, penned by Zach Baylin and William Josef Schneider, and directed by Rupert Sanders, comes close to the top of that list, as it doesn’t do any justice either to James O’Barr’s comic book series or to Alex Proyas’ 1994 cult classic.
The developmental hell the movie was stuck in for a decade and half, with multiple screenwriters, directors and lead actors attached to it, really shows, from its poorly timed release to the reception from both critics and wider audiences. You can't please everyone, as the saying goes, but it isn't every day that a jilted filmmaker fires shots -- both publicly and directly -- at a major property that's just released in theaters. Most would probably avoid courting such headlines, but Alex Proyas isn't like most filmmakers and the ever-vocal director isn't holding back on the newly-released remake of "The Crow." Proyas has been a veteran in this business for quite some time, directing 1998's "Dark City" (which still holds up as one of the smartest sci-fi movies ever made), "I, Robot," and, yes, the 2016 flop "Gods of Egypt." But he's perhaps most well-known for bringing the original "The Crow" to life in 1994, starring the late, great Brandon Lee in what would turn out to be his final film after a tragic on-set accident involving a firearm. There have been several attempts at remaking the film throughout the last few decades,...

The Crow remake faced numerous challenges from the outset, including competition and negative reviews. The original film holds strong cultural appeal and is viewed as a sacred classic by fans. The remake failed to resonate with a modern audience due to misunderstanding the original's themes and cultural impact.
To the surprise of few, The Crow remake had an abysmal opening weekend. While apologists will point to it facing stiff competition during a hard time at the box office and negative reviews giving it an unfair framing, even in the best-case scenario of timing and fanfare, the movie was still likely to fail.
As movie fans, we generally don't want to see films fail. We understand the amount of work that goes in, and while it is easy to point to a few figures leading the charge on bad choices, there is always a team of talented people who suffer from a misguided project.

This article contains massive spoilers for "The Crow."
Ever since creator and artist James O'Barr first illustrated and wrote the graphic novel "The Crow" in 1989, the series in all of its manifestations both on and off the silver screen has been a mash-up of various genres and aesthetics. Pulling together such disparate elements as film noir, dystopian fantasy, horror, action, Gothic romantic literature, and the Goth subculture, it's no surprise that "The Crow" and each adaptation of its characters and story has varied wildly. The latest cinematic incarnation, this time from director Rupert Sanders and screenwriters Zach Baylin and William Josef Schneider, is simply titled "The Crow," an indication that this film is intended as a reboot or even remake.
That's more for marketing purposes than anything else, however; this film could easily fit into the larger "Crow" franchise, which is to say that none of the other "Crow" sequels...

There’s a haunting simplicity to James O’Barr’s comic book “The Crow.” The story claims that sometimes — only sometimes — people die under such sad circumstances that their soul can’t rest, so they’re guided back to the land of the living by a crow, in order “to put the wrong things right.” It’s a tale of grief, mostly stuck in the “anger” phase, in which a beautiful walking corpse metes out violent vengeance against the unapologetically evil.
Alex Proyas’ feature film adaptation of “The Crow” was itself the source of overwhelming tragedy when its star, Brandon Lee — the son of martial arts icon Bruce Lee — died in an accident on set. This context can make Proyas’ film hard to watch: Lee’s complicated portrayal of a sad soul coming to terms with pain and mortality hits extremely close to home. But his performance also makes the film incredibly powerful.

To its credit, Rupert Sanders’s The Crow isn’t a mere rehash of Alex Proyas’s 1994 film. The central conflict is the same—a musician and his fiancée are murdered and the former is given the chance to return from the dead to avenge their death—but it expands on both the couple’s love story and the lore behind Eric’s (Bill Skarsgård) connection to the netherworld where the supernatural crows dwell. Unfortunately, in doing so, the remake gets bogged down by a superfluous, hackneyed backstory and narrative threads that are conspicuous for their lack of emotional gravitas, causing the film to feel like a wheel-spinning exercise.
For all its corniness, the original film cut right to the chase by opening with Eric and Shelly’s murder and allowing Eric’s bloody quest for vengeance to commence within a handful of scenes. Proyas understood the importance of narrative efficiency,...

With a résumé that includes the It franchise, Castle Rock and Barbarian, Bill Skarsgard flew off into familiar territory with a title role in the latest incarnation of The Crow. But, then again, he likes it dark.
“Physicality wasn’t really an issue, but the mental state kind of wears on you because you live in it for four months, you know?” Skarsgard told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night at the Lionsgate film’s world premiere held at New York’s Village East by Angelika. “I had a great shoot, a lot of night shoots. … You’re kind of preoccupied in a bleak state of mind for a while. The Crow remake's age rating has been revealed, and it features more intense warnings than the original. Released in 1994, the original movie was directed by Alex Proyas, with the late Brandon Lee starring as a murdered man who embarks on a path of vengeance after returning from the dead. Now, director Rupert Sanders' The Crowe remake puts actors Bill Skarsgrd in the lead role, and trailers have already teased the movie's dark and bloody tone.
FilmRatings.com now reveals that the MPA has given 2024's The Crow an R rating, just like its predecessor. The reasons behind the rating, however, are more intense, with the MPA citing "strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity, and drug use." The original, on the other hand, earned the rating for "a great amount of strong violence and language, and for drug use and some sexuality."

The Crow reboot has experienced a complicated production process with multiple changes in directors, writers, and actors throughout the years. Producer Sam Pressman believes the reboot will be impressive and has plans to expand it into a shared universe through video games or an animated series. The reboot stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven/The Crow and FKA Twigs as his murdered fiancée, with a release date set for 2024.
The Crow reboot is "going to blow people away" and could spawn a shared universe, teases producer Sam Pressman. Based on James O'Barr's comic book series, the 1994 film starred Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a murdered musician who is resurrected by a mystical crow and seeks revenge against the gang who killed him and his fiancée. The Crow was a sleeper hit at the box office and became a cult classic, though its sequels failed to achieve the same success.

It's about time for "Silent Hill" to make a comeback. The popular horror video game franchise is not only getting several new entries but also another film adaptation. "Return to Silent Hill" will become the third movie in the series, though it sounds as if director Christopher Gans is making more of a reboot than a proper sequel. The film will serve to accompany the upcoming video game titles in a massive wave of "Silent Hill" projects that publisher Konami announced last October.
The series revolves around the titular town of Silent Hill (located in Maine in the games and West Virginia in the movies), a place imbued with an ancient and terrible power that manifests its visitors' inner fears, traumas, and guilt in the form of misshapen creatures. Each entry follows a different character and their hellish adventures into Silent Hill, where they have to contend with the Order,...
