Subhash K Jha Revisits Subhash Ghai’s Black & White As It Turns 17
Image
Finally, the truth. Subhash Ghai’s most atypical film Black & White, released on March 7, 2008, was a blatant ripoff of Alan Pakula’s The Devil’s Own. Although Ghai denied the comparison, the similarities are too many to ignore. Subhash Ghai ventures into a territory that would characteristically be considered uninviting for an escapist entertainer.

It’s a well-crafted, finely written, and packaged piece of cinema done with more heartfelt Gandhian articulations than most recent films, which have merchandized poor Gandhiji in Munna-tones of bubble-gum philosophy.

You don’t often come away from a film disturbed yet hopeful about the distending dimensions of modern-day violence and terrorism. We did it in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se, Gulzar’s Maachis, and Santosh Sivan’s Terrorist. Now we feel a genuine concern for the collapse of Gandhi’s secular dream in India, as Chandni Chowk (which is rapidly becoming a favourite haunting-ground for...

Assam’s secret killing’s come back to haunt
Image
Nirbhay Kalita leaves his home in Guwahati, Assam, with dreams of starting a new chapter in life on a college campus over 2,000 km away in Pune, Maharashtra. But the political turmoil in his home state soon engulfs him and his family, triggering a chain of events that will radically alter the course of his life.

Two-time National Award winner, Nilaanjan R Datta’s debut Hindi film ‘Shadow Assassins’ puts the spotlight on the ‘secret killings’ of Assam, which marked the darkest period in the history of the North-Eastern state. Masked gunmen would raid the homes of those thought to be sympathisers of the outlawed militant group, U L F A, and pick them up.

Their bullet-ridden and mutilated bodies were discovered across the countryside, in fields and forests, streams and rivers. Homes were set on fire, and families destroyed in a snap. The dreaded night-time knock on the door ended up unleashing a blood bath,...

William Shakespeare
Short Film Review: Do I Exist: A Riddle (2019) by Dhruva Harsh
William Shakespeare
If a creative mind tackles the challenge of comprising a piece of art or philosophy within a certain fixed framework while still maintaining a truly unique voice, you can definitely speak of a talent to observe closely. In his 2018 short feature “Harshit”, the Indian filmmaker and playwright has already proven to be someone unafraid to face this particular challenge when he made what is essentially a rendition of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, albeit with a distinctively unique voice and a truly magnificent setting within the director’s home country.

Considering his past feature, it should come as no surprise to find Harsh has continued his work with another short feature referring to the concepts of Buddhism and the philosophy of René Descartes, in particular his famous phrase “Cogito Ergo Sum”. The roughly 17 minutes of the feature tell the story of Siddharta (Anurag Sinha) who remembers his past life, most importantly,...
