"It's So Good, It's Painful": Martin Scorsese on His Incredibly Meta Cameo in ‘The Studio’
Image
Martin Scorsese might be one of the most revered filmmakers in history, but even he isn't above poking fun at the madness of modern moviemaking — especially when he’s part of the punchline. In the debut episode of Apple TV+’s new satirical comedy The Studio, Scorsese drops by for a cameo that’s so sharp it had him laughing in recognition.

In the series, which premiered with two episodes and continues weekly on Thursdays, studio head Matt Remick (Seth Rogen) is thrilled to land Scorsese for what’s billed as his final film. The director wants to make a sober drama about the Jonestown massacre — a heavy, historical piece about blind faith and tragedy. But there’s a twist: the studio’s new boss (played by Bryan Cranston) has promised shareholders a blockbuster based on… Kool-Aid.

In a move that, in its brilliance, the audience can all see coming,...

Laura Dern's 7-Year-Old Drama About Infamous Real-Life Murderer Finds New Success on Streaming
Image
Streaming has given many films a second chance, especially those that didn't make a profit at the box office or didn't get a release at all. Laura Dern's crime drama is among them.

In 2018, Dern starred in Blood Diamonds' Edward Zwick's biographical crime drama Trial by Fire, which was recently released on Netflix. The film was based on Cameron Todd Willingham's real-life case, and used David Grann's 2009 The New York Times article "Trial by Fire" as a base. Now, the movie has found a second life on streaming and has become a hit on Netflix, Tudum reports.

New Martin Scorsese Crime Movie Will Star Leonardo DiCaprio And, Uh, The Rock?!
Image
The potential next collaboration between Martin Scorsese and his longtime muse and lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio has just been revealed. Also, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is part of it for some wild reason.

According to an exclusive report from Deadline, the pitch for Scorsese's latest project following his Oscar-nominated film "Killers of the Flower Moon" has DiCaprio, Johnson, and Emily Blunt attached to star. Deadline also provided the pitch's "thumbnail description," which reads, "Imagine Robert De Niro's Jimmy the Gent character from 'Goodfellas,' but as a ruthless Hawaiian crime boss, based on a real figure, who battled encroaching rivals for control of organized crime in Hawaii." The outlet also notes that the film will be written by Nick Bilton (a Vanity Fair editor who directed the 2021 documentary "Fake Famous") and says that the "film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring...

An Overlooked 2018 True Crime Drama Is Sitting High On Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Netflix has been serving up even more questionable streaming fare than usual of late. Dylan Sprouse's "Die Hard on a bridge" movie, "Aftermath," broke Netflix's film charts recently despite being what one viewer described as "visual cancer." It followed Amy Schumer's similar domination of the Netflix charts with her movie "Kinda Pregnant," a film that garnered a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score. That all transpired in the wake of Cameron Diaz's absolute domination of Netflix with her first movie in 11 years, "Back in Action," itself a 29-percenter on Rt. As such, the arrival of a half-decent true crime drama on the streamer's movie charts is a welcome development.

"Trial by Fire" is a biographical drama directed by Edward Zwick, the filmmaker responsible for one of the best Civil War movies ever made in "Glory." This overlooked 2018 effort is based upon the article of the same name by journalist David Grann,...

Edward Zwick's biographical crime drama Trial by Fire has found a second life on Netflix. The 2018 film tells the heart-wrenching story of Cameron Todd Willingham (portrayed by Jack O'Connell), a real-life man who was convicted and executed for the arson-related homicide of his three young daughters. Based on a 2009 article by renowned author and journalist David Grann, Trial by Fire explores the doubts surrounding Willingham's guilt and the efforts to prove his innocence. Gilbert becomes so involved in his case she begins to uncover evidence that challenges his conviction.

'Devil in the White City' Could Finally Movie Ahead After Being Previously Scrapped

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's long-in-development adaptation of Devil in the White City might have finally found a new home. Martin Scorsese's 'The Wolf of Wall Street' Now Streaming on Paramount+
Image
Martin Scorsese is renowned for making movies about larger-than-life characters with sky-high aspirations quickly rising to the top, before it all comes crashing down. He delivered that formula perfectly with two of his best and most lauded movies, Goodfellas and Raging Bull. However, what do you get when you mix that formula with Leonardo DiCaprio, a bunch of narcotics, the 1980s, and an average of 2.81 f-bombs per minute? The Wolf of Wall Street. If you want to witness Scorsese's incredible cautionary tale about greed and excess for the first time, then we've got good news, because it just landed a new streaming home.

The Wolf of Wall Street is now streaming on Paramount+. The film tells the real story of Jordan Belfort, a former Wall Street stock trader who started his own firm, Straton Oakmont, with a ridiculous commission rate and no moral limitations. Written by Terence Winter (who...

A Year Later, 'Killers of the Flower Moon' is Still a Streaming Hit
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese's Western thriller of 2023, is still one of the most popular films on the platform where it's exclusively streaming. Ever since its release on Apple TV+, the film has comfortably stayed among the most-watched films, and by the time of writing, it sits in the sixth spot.

Per FlixPatrol, Killers of the Flower Moon has remained on the prestigious list for nearly a year after its premiere on the streamer on January 12, 2024. To that end, we chose nine movies that you should definitely check out during the free preview weekend, everything from documentaries about the Beastie Boys to new classics from Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott to a movie about the formation of “Tetris” (yes really).

What Is Killers Of The Flower Moon About? The Real Meaning Of The Martin Scorsese Movie, Explained
Image
The themes of Killers of the Flower Moon are deep and complex, but are also a key reason why the story of Martin Scorsese’s 2023 historical drama are so important. Set in the early 20th century, Killers of the Flower Moon adapts David Grann's novel of the same name. Both the book and movie showcase the suffering of the Osage Nation of Indigenous Americans at the hands of the white population of Oklahoma.

There are many themes at play in Killers of the Flower Moon, and all stem from the shocking and tragic real-life history behind the narrative. The plot covers a period known to the Osage as the Reign of Terror. During this time, which lasted several decades, many Osage Nation people were murdered to enable Oklahoman industries to seize their land. It’s a harrowing series of events, and the core message of Martin Scorsese’s movie...

Is Killers Of The Flower Moon Based On A True Story?
Image
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is based on real-life events that took place in the Osage Nation in the 1920s in Oklahoma when oil was discovered on their land. The film was based on the non-fiction novel by David Granna about the Osage Indian Murders that took place from 1910 to 1930, many of which remained unsolved until the FBI moved in and began to investigate the case. Impressively, Scorsese worked with the Osage Nation from the start of working on the project to make it as respectful and accurate as possible.

The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a World War I veteran who was married to an Osage woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone). However, when his uncle William King Hale (Robert De Niro) sets his eyes on the oil fortune in Oklahoma, Osage citizens begin to die. Jesse Plemons stars as Thomas Bruce White Sr., a...

Martin Scorsese's Next Film May Come From a Pulitzer Prize Winner
Image
Martin Scorsese has quite a few projects percolating at the moment. There's The Wager, based on the David Grann book The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder, with Leonardo DiCaprio expected to star. There's also a proposed Frank Sinatra biopic, and a film about the life of Jesus Christ the former of which may or may not still be in the works. And then there's Home, an adaptation of Pulitzer prize-winning author Marilynne Robinson's 2008 novel of the same name.

The director first spoke about the project in 2023, indicating at the time he'd written a script with Tr and In the Bedroom writer-director Todd Field, along with Kent Jones, the filmmaker behind Diane and Hitchcock/Truffaut. Scorsese mentioned Home again in a new interview with The Canadian Press in November 2024, saying there was a "very strong possibility" it would be his next film, but that a "scheduling issue" might prevent it from happening.

Martin Scorseses Jesus Film & Frank Sinatra Biopic Delayed Indefinitely
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese was set to film two movies back to back, but they have since been postponed. Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of all time, and he just earned his tenth Academy Award nomination for Best Director for 2023's Killers of the Flower Moon. Martin Scorsese’s The Life of Jesus project and Frank Sinatra biopic have been postponed

A Martin Scorsese movie is always something to look forward to, but Variety reports that his next two projects have unfortunately been delayed. Martin Scorsese planned to shoot two movies back-to-back this year, including The Life of Jesus, based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, and a biopic about Frank Sinatra.

Variety’s report states that both these projects have been postponed, with neither to be filmed this year. The Life of Jesus was expected to be up first, although there’s been nothing officially announced regarding the cast. That said, Andrew Garfield, who starred in Scorsese’s Silence, was rumoured to be eyeing the film. The project is still in development, with Scorsese hoping to shoot the film in Israel, Italy, and Egypt. Earlier this year, the director said he was still figuring it out. “I’m contemplating it right now,” Scorsese said. “What kind of film I’m not quite sure,...

Killers of the Flower Moon Is Still Dominating Apple TV's Top 10
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon, the crime epic directed by Martin Scorsese, has stayed on Apple TV+'s list of most-watched films since it premiered on the streamer in January 2024. The feat is a rarity for Apple's original programming catalog, which doesn't really have prominent films that get talked about a year after their release. However, in the case of Scorsese's drama, viewers have been showing their love endlessly. It seems those 10 nominations at the Academy Awards did the movie some good well, at least on Apple TV+.

The audience appreciation and acclaim were not the same when the film premiered in theaters back in October 2023. Scorsese's $200 million film was only able to gross $157 million during its theatrical run, but after the digital release, it made much more than expected. Many attributed this to the fact that viewers preferred to see the movie in the comfort of their own homes,...

“No one can tell you not to create. You must create,” Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo told a crowd of Arkansas-based filmmakers and fans during Variety’s Southern Storytellers panel at the Filmland festival and conference in Little Rock.

Co-founder of Filmland (and director of 1960s motorcycle club saga “The Bikeriders”) Jeff Nichols presented Domingo with the event’s inaugural Southern Storytellers Award, before joining Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge in steering a wide-ranging conversation about the craft with Domingo and half a dozen other writers, directors and producers.

Martin Scorsese to Direct Documentary About Ancient Shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea

On the heels of last year’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese has now added yet another project to his upcoming slate, one which will begin production first. Along with his Life of Jesus film, a Marilynne Robinson adaptation, a Frank Sinatra biopic, and an adaptation of David Grann’s The Wager, Scorsese will embark on a documentary about ancient shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Jim Carrey Movie With A Depressing Rotten Tomatoes Score Of 0%
Image
Alexandros Avranas' 2018 film "Dark Crimes," starring Jim Carrey, was extrapolated from a true crime article published in the New Yorker in 2008. The article, post-modernly called "True Crime," was written by David Grann, and it told the story of a Polish novelist named Krystian Bala who murdered a small business owner named Dariusz Janiszewski in the year 2000. For three years, the police were unable to solve the case, and Bala seemed to have gotten away with it. Bala, perhaps feeling smug about his ability to evade detection for so long, decided to poke the bear a little bit. In 2003, he published a crime novel called "Amok," wherein he wrote a fictionalized version of the Janiszewski murder, including intimate details that only the killer could have known. Bala depicted his fictional self as a badass nihilist who loved quoting Nietzsche and didn't care about human laws, man. "Amok" was a big hit,...

Lily Gladstone Had Three Requirements Before Agreeing to Play an Indigenous Woman Cop in ‘Under the Bridge’: ‘It’s Almost the Only Role We Get to See’
Image
There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.

“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”

So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.

Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

Jodie Foster thinks Killers of the Flower Moon should have been an eight-hour miniseries
Image
At nearly three-and-a-half hours, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon was already a long movie, but Jodie Foster thinks it could have been longer. In fact, she believes it should have been expanded into an eight-hour limited series.

Jodie Foster and Robert Downey Jr. chatted for Variety’s Actors on Actors, and both actors have recently had experiences with limited series, Foster with True Detective: Night Country and Downey Jr. with The Sympathizer.

“This is the beauty of having limited series,” Foster said. “You can expand on a story. I was thinking of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ — extraordinary movie, three-and-a-half hours long. And I thought, ‘I wonder why they didn’t do it eight hours long’ — to be able to explore all these other people, and give them another perspective. The great thing about limited series is you can have that novelistic idea of going off...

Lily Gladstone Calls Oscar Loss 'Irrelevant' & Says She Later Received the 'Biggest Honor'
Image
Lily Gladstone did not win the Oscar for Best Actress, but that loss, Gladstone says, is "irrelevant." The impact of Killers of the Flower Moon went beyond awards, receiving a day dedicated by her tribe. Gladstone was moved by the outpouring of support from her tribe, showing appreciation for her work in filmmaking.

Lily Gladstone made history with her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. She was the first Native American to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama and be nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award. The Oscar would go to Emma Stone for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things, but that loss, Gladstone says, is "irrelevant."

During a recent conversation with Empire, Gladstone spoke about the film's impact and said that "nobody was upset" that she didn't take home the Oscar.

Killers of the Flower Moon: What Really Happened to This Movie?
Image
Martin Scorsese’s epic Killers of the Flower Moon shined a light on one of the lesser-known dark chapters of American history – the wholesale slaughter of dozens of members of the Osage Indian Nation by their supposed guardians, neighbors and friends. A dramatic gut-punch of a film, it was adapted by Scorsese and Eric Roth from the 2017 David Grann book of the same name. The book took about five years to research, and the film took just as long to arrive on the big screen, with both taking great pains to authentically communicate the tragic nature of the Osage murders. While the film obviously takes a handful of liberties necessary to dramatize Grann’s book, by all accounts it’s an incredibly faithful telling of the story, accurately recreating the book’s major events as realistically as possible. Let’s take a look at What Really Happened to Killers of the Flower Moon.

Jeff Nichols Will Adapt Cormac McCarthy’s The Passenger and Stella Maris
Image
When news broke last year of John Hillcoat adapting Blood Meridian, I had expressed some hope for similar treatment bestowed upon Cormac McCarthy’s final novels The Passenger and Stella Maris. This desire was almost entirely quixotic; his swan song is an über-nihilistic encyclopedic thriller, at least one-third of which is a two-person dialogue on the history of math, physics, the Manhattan Project (far more compellingly than Oppenheimer), God’s existence, and wanting to fuck your own brother, with a protagonist rather convincingly written as the smartest person alive. It is really not suggestive of a financeable movie.

No doubt emboldened The Bikeriders, however, Jeff Nichols will give it a shot. Speaking to Awards Watch, the writer-director revealed New Regency will back the effort, whether it’s one film or two (I can take a guess) or even arrives anytime soon; Nichols is also planning to adapt David Grann’s...

WGA Awards winners: ‘American Fiction,’ ‘The Holdovers’ …
Image
Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.

Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.

Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

‘The Holdovers’, ‘American Fiction’ triumph at 2024 Writers Guild Awards season finale
Image
David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.

This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.

The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

‘The Holdovers,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘The Bear’ Win Top Prizes at WGA Awards (Complete Winners List)
Image
With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

David Hemingson’s “The Holdovers” won the night’s marquee award for Original Screenplay, beating out heavyweights including Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s “Barbie” and Celine Song’s “Past Lives.” In the Adapted Screenplay category,...

‘Succession,’ ‘The Bear,’ ‘American Fiction’ and ‘The Holdovers’ Top WGA Awards (Full Winners List)
Image
‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.

This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.

The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Big winners on the film side included “American Fiction” writer Cord Jefferson,...

Jurnee Smollett to Star in Apple TV+’s ‘Firebug’ Opposite Taron Egerton
Image
Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Firebug,” in which she’ll star opposite Taron Egerton. Smollett will play Michelle, a “rising star detective.”

“Firebug,” loosely based on true events and inspired by a podcast of the same name, stars Egerton as an “enigmatic arson investigator.” The two characters pursue two serial arsonists. Egerton is also an exec producer on the Apple original series (from Apple Studios), from creator Dennis Lehane.

Lehane also developed and executive produces “Firebug,” which reps a reunion of the team behind Apple TV+’s “Black Bird.” Other exec producers include Richard Plepler (via Eden Productions), Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas (through Imperative Entertainment), and Kary Antholis.

Apple points out that the series, set in the contemporary Pacific Northwest, is fictional — although it does take some of the events included in in truth.media’s “Firebug” podcast, which was hosted by Antholis,...

Jurnee Smollett To Star Alongside Taron Egerton In New Apple Drama Series ‘Firebug’
Image
Emmy nominee Jurnee Smollett is set to lead the new Apple Original drama series Firebug, loosely inspired by events surrounding notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr. She will star alongside Taron Egerton in the project developed, written and executive produced by Dennis Lehane.

Firebug will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (Egerton) as they pursue the trail of two serial arsonists. Smollett will play Michelle, a rising-star detective. Set in the contemporary Pacific Northwest the fictional series uses as its launching pad some events documented in truth.media’s acclaimed Firebug podcast. Orr, the inspiration for the podcast, worked for the Glendale Fire Department in Southern California as a fire captain and arson investigator who later was convicted of being a serial arsonist and mass murderer.

In addition to starring, Egerton will serve as executive producer alongside Richard Plepler through Eden Productions, Dan Friedkin and...

Francesca Scorsese Becomes the People’s Champion After Footage of Director Martin Scorsese Feeling the Kenergy Goes Viral
Image
Martin Scorsese recently attended the 96th Academy Awards as his film Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated in 10 categories at the event. The director came with his daughter Francesca Scorsese and the cast of his film to represent the film at the prestigious award ceremony. Lily Gladstone was their best shot at nabbing an award for the night for Best Actress.

Unfortunately, the film did not win even one Oscar, and returned home empty-handed. However, Scorsese and his daughter seemed to have had a great time at the ceremony, especially during the live musical performances. A viral video captured by Scorsese’s daughter shows Scorsese having a great time as Ryan Gosling performs I’m Just Ken.

Killers Of The Flower Moon's 2024 Oscars Losses Make Martin Scorsese's 4-Year-Old Insult Even Worse
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon: Oscar hopes are dashed, reflecting The Irishman's zero awards history. Lily Gladstone misses Best Actress Oscar to Emma Stone's role in Poor Things. Based on true events, Scorsese's film delves into Osage murders and FBI's role in the 1920s.

The once-hopeful Oscar contender Killers of the Flower Moon came up empty at the 96th Academy Awards. This mirrors the underwhelming performance of Scorsese's previous Oscar contender, The Irishman, which also came home with zero awards.

Killers of the Flower Moon received a total of 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin Scorsese, and Best Actress for Lily Gladstone. Gladstone, who was arguably the favorite to take home the Best Actress award, lost to Emma Stone's lead role in Poor Things.

Emma Stone Wins Best Actress Oscar for Poor Things
Image
Emma Stone has won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 96th Academy Awards for her performance in Poor Things in one of the toughest fought award categories of the night. While many of the other awards could have had Oppenheimer written all over them, the Best Actress winner could have gone a number of ways. Addressing her fellow nominees, Stone said in her speech:

“My voice is also a little gone. Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily, I share this with you. The other night I was panicking, and Yorgos said to me ‘take yourself out of it’. And he’s right, because it’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something that is better than the sum of its parts. Yorgos, thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.”

Based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things centers on...

Oppenheimer's $960M Success Is More Remarkable When Compared To Its Real 2023 Movie Rival (Not Barbie)
Image
Oppenheimer's $960 million box office success shines even brighter when compared to its true 2023 rival, Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite Barbie's $1.44 billion earnings, Oppenheimer's $960 million box office haul on a $100 million budget is remarkably impressive. Its low budget, star-studded cast, spectacular effects, and the Barbenheimer frenzy all contributed to Oppenheimer's outstanding achievements.

Oppenheimer's $960 million box office achievement is even more impressive when weighed against its real 2023 movie rival instead of the Barbie movie. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie had simultaneous release dates in July 2023, which naturally brought about a rivalry over which film would perform better, even though the movies couldn't have been more different. The viral Barbenheimer battle ensued, galvanizing the hype and expectation the public had for the two films long after the day of the showdown transpired and, even today, is arguably still in the throes of the contest.

Oppenheimer and Barbie's respective numbers in ratings,...

‘American Fiction’ Takes Home USC Scripter Award
Image
The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.

For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

USC Scripter Awards: ‘American Fiction’ and ‘Slow Horses’ Take Top Honors
Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in Slow Horses (2022)
The writers behind the feature American Fiction and the TV adaptation Slow Horses took home the top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which honors the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors as well as the screenwriters share the award.

In the film category, American Fiction (Cord Jefferson’s adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure) topped fellow nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI); Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer); Origin (Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents); and Poor Things (Tony McNamara’s adaptation of Aliasdair Gray’s novel of the same name).
