HBO has announced that its original nine-part documentary series Celtics City will debut on Monday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. New episodes will debut weekly through April 28.

The NBA Cup’s Colorful Courts Are Horrible TV and Fail Filmmaking 101
Image
The NBA has a problem. When the playoffs expanded to include a play-in game, making it so 20 of 30 teams make the postseason, the league had further de-emphasized the importance of its 82-game regular season. While the two months of NBA playoffs are some of the most dramatic must-watch TV of the year, it’s the six months of regular season live-event programming that is the league’s bread-and-butter when it comes to ticket sales and TV revenue.

Last season, in an effort to create some in-season excitement, the league created an in-season tournament, the second edition of which was rebranded the Emirates NBA Cup and tipped off last week with group play before eight teams advance to the knockout round on December 10-17. The in-season tourney is, objectively, a meaningless competition. Each game still just counts as a regular season win or loss, and winning the Cup carries no competitive advantage to the winning team.

Both teams’ journey to the finals has been anything but easy; the Celtics defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in five games while the New York Knicks took Indiana all the way to game seven.

In this series, the Celtics’ Jayson Tatum will likely go toe-to-toe with the Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton. Tatum’s ability to score from anywhere on the court and his defensive versatility will be crucial in countering Haliburton’s offensive threats.

Another critical matchup is in the paint, with Boston’s Al Horford and Indiana’s Myles Turner. Turner’s shot-blocking and rebounding skills are vital to the Pacers’ defense, while Horford’s experience and leadership...

After 13 playoff trips in 15 NBA seasons, forward-center Al Horford is playing in his first NBA Finals. Horford has played in 141 postseason games without reaching the finals, the...
