Newport Jazz Festival has unveiled a star-studded lineup for its summer weekend. Janelle Monáe, the Roots, and Jacob Collier will headline the three-day event, which will take place Aug. 1-3 at Fort Adams State Park in Rhode Island.

The rest of the bill is just as stacked. Raye, Willow, Esperanza Spalding, Jorja Smith, De La Soul, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Thee Sacred Souls, and Sofi Tukker are among the other acts performing this year. Plus, there will be an all-star cast for the Big Band set, assembled by artistic director Christian McBride.

The Newport Jazz Festival is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year with an impressive lineup.

On Tuesday, the annual music festival announced the performers for this year’s iteration, which will include Kamasi Washington, André 3000, Laufey, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and Elvis Costello. This year’s festival is scheduled for Aug. 2 through Aug. 4 at Rhode Island’s Fort Adams State Park.

For 50 years, it’s been a safe place for storytellers – musicians, animators, directors, writers, artists of all kinds – to learn, grow and thrive. As CalArts celebrates its golden anniversary, it also faces the future head-on.

Broad trustee emeritus Tim Disney, whose great-grandfather, Walt Disney, laid the foundation for what is now a world-class arts school, says that CalArts was founded with very large-scale, utopian ideas by Walt Disney. “Disneyland and CalArts were very grand things,” Disney says, adding that Walt died before the school opened and that his grandfather, Roy Disney, “had the very hard job” seeing the plans through. “His commitment was a very beautiful thing.”

It’s not a coincidence that Tim Disney spearheaded the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (RedCat) in Downtown L.A., which hosts cutting-edge performances.

Warp Records will continue their 30th anniversary celebration this November with the Wxaxrxp Sessions, a box set featuring unreleased radio sessions from the label’s artists, including Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Flying Lotus and more.

Oneohtrix Point Never, Lfo, Bibio, Mount Kimble and more also contribute sessions to Wxaxrxp Sessions, which will be available November 15th as both a 10-lp box set and standalone versions of each session.

Aphex Twin’s contribution is his four-song Peel Session 2 that he recorded on April 10th, 1995, one of only two radio sessions the artist born Richard D.

For devotees of John Coltrane, whose adoration of the late, pathfinding saxophonist borders on the religious, 2018 has been a banner year.

In March, Sony Legacy released a four-cd set of Coltrane’s 1960 European live performances with trumpeter Miles Davis, with whom he had famously worked on and off since the mid-‘50s. The collection – the first legit issue of material previously available only in gray-market packages – compiled concert dates on which Trane upstaged his boss with boundary-pushing, screaming playing that drew cheers and catcalls in equal measure.

The import of those exciting sides is superseded this week with the materialization of an unexpected and thrilling treasure, finally unburied: a never-before-released session featuring Coltrane in the full flush of his solo fame, with his “classic quartet” of pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.
