It's been over a year since Netflix finally announced what all "Peaky Blinders" fans were waiting for: a feature-length film following the critically acclaimed six-season run of the beloved show. Over time, both old and new characters have been added to the roster of "The Immortal Man," which will reunite us with Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) after yet another near-death experience and being fooled into thinking he wasn't destined to survive. But what's next? With a release touted for some time in late 2025, neither the streaming platform nor the creators has provided an exact date. Will we get an update soon, or do we still have yet to wait on a gathering storm where comes a tall, handsome man in a dusty black coat with a red right hand?
It's certainly been a frustrating waiting game to get answers about the future of the "Peaky Blinders." In the meantime, though,...

Sebastian Stan Joins Jacob Elordi and Christian Bale in Third Frankenstein Movie by Dracula Director
Rudy Jude is currently penning his own Frankenstein movie, which could star Sebastian Stan in the lead. Although the actor is yet to break his silence on the subject, the filmmaker, who has garnered laudation from Martin Scorsese for his works, told Cultura la dubă that Stan has said yes to his offer.
I pitched it to Sebastian, and he said yes. So I’ve started writing the script, but it’ll take some time.
While a release window is yet to be unveiled for the movie, if this does pull through, it’ll be the third live-action Frankenstein movie to get greenlit in the current climate, with the other two from Maggie Gyllenhaal and Guillermo del Toro.

Charlie Kaufman is preparing to take his new short film “How to Shoot a Ghost” to the Venice International Film Festival next month, but it won’t be long before cinephiles with public library cards get a chance to watch it. IndieWire can exclusively reveal that Kanopy — the ad-free streaming service free for many library cardholders to use — has signed on as a producer and the exclusive library and educational distributor of the film.
“How to Shoot a Ghost” is directed by Kaufman and written by the poet Eva H.D., who previously wrote Kaufman’s 2023 short “Jackals & Fireflies.” Per an official synopsis, the film follows “two newly dead young people meet in the streets of Athens, amid the pulsing cityscape and the ghosts of history. One a translator, the other a photographer, they were outsiders in life; in death they struggle with the residue of their longings and mistakes. They wander the city together,...

Before Robert Downey Jr returns to the MCU as Doctor Doom, he played a veterinarian who could speak to animals in this 2020 feature. Dolittle was Downey Jr's first project following the end of his MCU tenure in Avengers: Endgame. While this feature received a low 15% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was well-liked by fans to the point that it has surged in streaming, just a year before we see the actor once more in Avengers: Doomsday.
According to FlixPatrol, Dolittle sits at #8 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies on August 2, 2025, worldwide, sandwiched between The Northman and Rampage. Directed by Stephen Gaghan, Dolittle takes place in the Victorian era, where Dr. John Dolittle (Downey Jr) embarks on an adventure with his animal friends to find a cure for an ill Queen Victoria. The creature has emerged from the shadows.
After a brief glimpse in the teaser trailer, Jacob Elordi's take on Frankenstein's monster has finally been revealed as part of a cache of first-look photos from Guillermo del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelly's gothic horror classic.
The images, initially posted by Vanity Fair and then released by Netflix later Monday, show the cloaked creature (bearing scant resemblance to the iconic Boris Karloff version in the 1931 Universal horror film) staring intently, along with other scenes featuring the cast, including Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, as well as del Toro directing. See the images below, along with everything we know about the film, which should prominently figure into the Oscar conversation.

As the sweltering heat of summer movie season rages on, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (Disney/Marvel) is the latest addition to the multiplex pack. So far, we’ve seen “Superman,” “F1,” and “Jurassic World: Rebirth” make bank at the box office.
Meanwhile, Matt Shakman’s MCU needle-reset has grossed more than $24 million in previews. It’s looking at a potential $100-million-plus debut for the sci-fi comic book adaptation starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn. Soon, they will join the next “Avengers” movie from the Russo Brothers, set for 2026.
As we discuss on this week’s episode of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, the movie isn’t horrible, but certainly doesn’t make a lasting impression in terms of its visuals and uninspiring narrative. Ryan has been depressed over the latest summer offerings that offer no psychological challenge, though he and Anne appreciate the smart casting that went into this movie,...

It's going to be a smashing time in Venice this year. The Venice Film Festival has unveiled the full lineup for its 82nd edition and the annual event will serve as the launching pad for Dwayne Johnson's Oscar campaign. The WWE star-turned-leading man plans to be front and center on the Lido with the competition entry The Smashing Machine from director Benny Safdie. Based on the life of Mma fighter Mark Kerr, the film reunites Johnson with his Jungle Cruise costar, Emily Blunt, and hopes to succeed in the awards race where A24's last sports picture — 2023's The Iron Claw — fell short.
But Johnson is stepping into the ring with some heavy-hitters in the Best Actor race, including George Clooney and Oscar Isaac. Both stars will be in Venice for their respective Netflix productions, Jay Kelly and Frankenstein, which hail from directors with proven awards track records. Clooney...

The first time their paths crossed creatively, Noah Hawley cast Timothy Olyphant in the supporting role of Dick “Deafy” Wickware in the fourth season of the former’s anthology project, Fargo. With a brimmed hat atop his head, a gun in his holster, and a heart beating for the Mormon religion, Olyphant’s U.S. Marshal was on a mission of justice in a set of episodes that also featured Chris Rock and Jessie Buckley. And, anyone who’s been a fan of Olyphant’s will know that Fargo was far from the first time he’d portrayed a man of the law, as he previously depicted similar characters in titles like Justified, Deadwood, The Crazies, and more.
When Hawley was casting for his upcoming series, Alien: Earth, he knew that he wanted the Scream 2 alumni involved, but he didn’t want Olyphant to be playing the same old part.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s take on The Brideis one project that has all eyes on it. In years gone by the horror genre has spoilt fans for choices be it big productions like Sinners, Nosferatu, franchises like Scream, Terrifier, or small independent sub-genre films like Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. A couple of years ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release on March 6, 2026. That’s a longer wait than initially expected, as the movie had previously been scheduled for an October 2025 release – and during an interview with Deadline, cast member Peter Sarsgaard (who also happens to be married to Gyllenhaal) said that he expects the movie to be controversial when it does make its way out into the world.

The Bride!, by writer/director Maggie Gyllenhaal (also Sarsgaard's partner in real life), will offer horror fans a "punk" variation on the gothic horror tale of Frankenstein's monster when he finds his other half. Though the film has remained under wraps, Sarsgaard has disclosed some details, saying The Bride! will surely be controversial with viewers.
According to a report by Deadline, Sarsgaard was recently honored at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The Memory and Jackie actor talked about projects like the vastly overlooked September 5 as well as the upcoming adaptation of the cyberpunk heist classic Neuromancer. He also talked about The Bride!, the project that'll reunite him with Gyllenhaal after she directed him in The Lost Daughter:...

Peter Sarsgaard thinks The Bride!, the Bride of Frankenstein-inspired movie written and directed by his wife Maggie Gyllenhaal, could spark controversy.
“I’m going to say that it’s going to be controversial,” the actor told Deadline. “I mean, it’s very punk. It’s very radical in some ways, and the main characters in it are very imperfect. It’s also a love story, basically. It’s about the monster in all of us.”
Contrary to advance rumors, the film is not a musical, although Sarsgaard conceded that the film does include dance numbers.
Set in 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change.
Sarsgaard appears in the film alongside Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, and Annette Bening.

Peter Sarsgaard arrived at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival with two forthcoming genre projects in tow—and a pledge to “seek the truth” every time he steps on set. During a Kviff Talk he confirmed his role in Apple TV+’s adaptation of William Gibson’s cyber-punk milestone Neuromancer and called Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein off-shoot The Bride! “provocative, sexy, dangerous and punk.”
Apple posted a “Welcome to the Chatsubo” video on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook last week, announcing that the ten-episode series—steered by showrunner Graham Roland and pilot director Jd Dillard—has entered production. Sarsgaard plays patriarch John Ashpool opposite Callum Turner’s hacker Case and Briana Middleton’s mirror-eyed assassin Molly. Polygon noted that Apple’s order ends four decades of failed film attempts to bring the 1984 novel to screen.
Spain’s Cinco Días reports the streamer is banking on Neuromancer to reinforce its science-fiction slate following Foundation and Silo.

Apple TV+ has debuted two new movies recently from Guy Ritchie and Sydney Sweeney, and now the projects are engaged in a battle at the top of the streaming charts. Hailing from Guy Ritchie is Fountain of Youth, the Indiana Jones-esque adventure thriller starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, which currently sits in the second spot on Apple TV+ streaming charts. It’s following behind Echo Valley, the latest project from star Sydney Sweeney that also features Julianne Moore, that’s occupying the top spot on the streamer’s charts. Neither film has been particularly well-liked by critics or audiences — Fountain of Youth earned scores of 36% from critics and 39% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and Echo Valley has come to rest at ratings of 51% from critics and 50% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Guy Ritchie has been extremely busy this year between the release of Fountain of Youth and also directing episodes of MobLand.

It’s the year 2025 and we are blessed with not one, and dare we say not even two, but three new Jane Austen adaptations. Ms. Austen herself turns 250 years old this year, and it’s not a moment too soon to celebrate the life and works of the iconic author.
Now, exactly two decades after Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” made cinematic history with the Darcy (Mathew Macfadyen) hand flex seen ’round the world, there are a number of modern adaptations in the works, not to mention other recent works inspired by her life and most beloved novels, from the film “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the series “Miss Austen.”
And “Pride & Prejudice” is hardly the only Austen book getting new life in two (!!) formats, as Austen seems to suddenly be everywhere, all over again. Ahead, we break down the upcoming adaptations, and provide some guidance on...

The 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 4-12) boasts not one but two competitions, the Crystal Globe and Proxima, curated by artistic director Karel Och under the supervision of executive director Kryštof Mucha. The festival is the main summer event in the country, which attracts many sponsors and patrons who want to attend, and faces fewer financial hardships than such festivals as Berlin, Toronto, and Sundance.
Last year, 130 films were shown and 140,000 tickets sold. There is little room for growth, given the limited venues, from the many screening rooms at the festival hub, the Hotel Thermal, where jurors hang out between screenings, to the colorful arthouse Kino Drahomira, named after a revered Czech woman director.
The Central European festival falls between Cannes and Venice, and programs many films in its Crystal Globe Competition that did not make the cut at Cannes, as well as films that weren’t yet finished.

A film from Iran that has been kept secret so far to ensure the safety of its delegation, along with Dakota Johnson, Stellan Skarsgård, Peter Sarsgaard and Vicky Krieps, has joined the lineup for the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff).
Known as a popular stop on the film festival circuit for many stars, Karlovy Vary had previously already unveiled a visit from Michael Douglas this year.

Dakota Johnson’s 5 Best Performances Ranked (Photo Credit – Prime Video/Netflix)
Coming from a film background, Dakota Johnson has always been under the spotlight. However, when she made her debut in the industry at the age of 9 in 1999 in a small role alongside her mother, Melanie Griffith, in the lead role in the movie Crazy in Alabama, she didn’t go viral instantly.
In fact, she didn’t appear in any other projects until 2010. She slowly got the hang of how the industry works, and even took part in various projects, where she played small roles. Until she featured in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy alongside Jamie Dornan and broke the internet. Dakota got her biggest breakthrough with that and proved she has the quality to lead a movie.

Set to be adapted for TV, Nothing Good Happens After 2am is Irish author Niamh Hargan’s third novel and begins behind the unmarked door of speakeasy Love and Death, tucked away in East London. There, rising stars Robbie Saunders and El Tippett are locked in a volatile dance of rivalry and chemistry, fighting for the approval of their enigmatic boss, Otto Kettinger. Hera said the novel, which will publish next January, was won “in a fiercely competitive bidding war.” Conversations are already underway with “top-tier screenwriters,” the indie added.

Julianne Hough has been involved in “Dancing With the Stars” in some capacity for nearly 20 years, long enough to see a resurgence for the ABC ballroom competition show among younger viewers during last season’s 33rd installment.
“We’ve seen multigenerations follow the show for years, but now, the babies that were born when their parents first started watching the show are now 18, and they’re creating their own new generation of people who love the show,” Hough, who now hosts the show, told TheWrap. “There’s just been this whole new resurgence of life like back into the show.”
Hough points to Olympian Ilona Maher as one Season 33 contestant who raised the bar for “Dancing With the Stars” with her vulnerability on the show, and brought in a new generation of fans who followed her on social media during the Paris Games. “Dancing” will draw in a similar younger...

Welcome to the Gold Ticket, your VIP guide to the best of pop culture for the weekend ahead, curated by the Gold Derby team of experts. (June 13-June 15)
The main stream
Our top movie pick this week is Apple TV+’s straight-to-streaming thriller Echo Valley, which finds Julianne Moore doing anything for her daughter Sydney Sweeney. Moore plays Kate, a recently widowed woman whose daughter Claire’s (Sweeney) heroin addiction has made her manipulative, unreliable, and prone to getting caught up in bad situations. One day, Claire shows up at Kate’s farm covered in her abusive boyfriend’s blood, and asks for Kate’s help getting rid of his body. It only gets twistier from there.
The film is directed by Michael Pearce, who is working in similar psychological thriller territory as his BAFTA-winning debut, the Jessie Buckley-led Beast. He gives Moore and Sweeney space to go to dark places.

British director Michael Pearce has twice proven himself a sophisticated, surprising crafter of thrillers, having previously helmed Jessie Buckley’s sinister breakthrough feature Beast in 2017 and Riz Ahmed’s sci-fi piece Encounter in 2021_._ With Echo Valley, Pearce continues his run of eliciting excellent performances from top actors. This time, he tackles the story of grief-stricken Kate and the malign influence of mendacious drug-addict daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney) when she returns to the family farm in rural Pennsylvania after a short period of estrangement.
Kate — skint because she can’t face teaching horse-riding, some six months after the death of her wife Patty — is already having trouble paying for a new barn roof when Claire arrives asking for more money. Even Kate’s ex-husband Richard (Kyle MacLachlan) has been dragged in to help with their financial situation. It’s a smart start: laying the groundwork for a high-grade addiction drama, before switching gears.

Fans hoping for a chilling, monstrous take on Mary Shelley's classic will need to adjust their expectations.
Legendary director Guillermo del Toro, known for fantastical horrors like Pan's Labyrinth and the gothic romance Crimson Peak, has confirmed his upcoming Netflix adaptation of Frankenstein is decidedly not a horror movie.

"Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes?" he recounted. "For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie — ever. I’m not trying to do that."

Angelina Jolie is at the Cannes Film Festival, not with a film in the lineup but with official duties thanks to the festival’s longtime (and glamorous) sponsor, Chopard.
The Oscar winner agreed to serve as this year’s Chopard Godmother, a gig that saw her preside over Friday night’s A-list Trophée Chopard dinner at Carlton Beach and present trophies to an actor and actress anointed as next generational talent by a jury comprised of previous recipients of the esteemed festival honor. This year’s awards went to French actress Marie Colomb and breakout British star Finn Bennett, most recently seen in Alex Garland’s Warfare and opposite Jodie Foster in True Detective: Night Country.
The honors were doled out during what is always a glitzy ceremony attended by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele, members of the competition jury and A-list guests.

Angelina Jolie presented the 25th Trophée Chopard at a dinner on Carlton Beach on May 16, honoring Marie Colomb and Finn Bennett as rising screen talents. The event, co-hosted by Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch, general delegate Thierry Frémaux and Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele, brought together jurors, filmmakers and industry figures under a starry Mediterranean sky. Jolie used her platform to highlight the reach of international cinema, its capacity to foster empathy and the urgent need to support storytellers working under threat.
Jolie told attendees—including jury president Juliette Binoche, Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, Leïla Slimani, Alba Rohrwacher, Quentin Tarantino and Carla Bruni—that films carry audiences far beyond their own experiences. “Through international cinema, we enter private moments, we witness lives at stake on distant front lines,” she said. Referencing My Father Shadow, a drama set against the 1993 Nigerian election crisis premiering at the festival, she added, “Any step...
