BBC Adapting Jacqueline Wilson’s Ode To ‘The Railway Children’

The BBC is adapting Jacqueline Wilson’s Primrose Railway Children for TV, the author’s ode to E. Nesbit’s timeless classic. The Cbbc feature length follows Phoebe, her older sister Becks, younger brother Perry and their mum who are living a comfortable life in Glasgow when suddenly they are uprooted from their lives and moved to the remote highlands of Scotland. The book is itself based on The Railway Children, which was also remade as a movie recently starring Jenny Agutter, Tom Courtenay and Sheridan Smith. Cbbc has been going big on its adaptations lately and has also made versions of Oliver Twist and The Famous Five. The kids network has also ordered a sitcom starring Peep Show alums Robert Webb and Isy Suttie titled High Hoop about a reckless high school basketball player, along with more of channel favorite Malory Towers.

It is indeed a new series about a woman and a baby, but uh, it's definitely not what you're expecting. At all. Wildlife Non-Scripted Comedy ‘When Nature Calls’ Lands At ABC From BBC Studios
Image
Exclusive: ABC is looking at the lighter side of the natural history world.

The network has ordered When Nature Calls (w/t), a non-scripted comedy series that looks at the funny things that animals get up to in the wild.

It will feature the surprising things that come out of the mouths of majestic beasts, teeny-tiny frogs and beatboxing badgers.

The show is based on a BBC Studios format – Walk on the Wild Side – which aired on BBC One in the UK for two seasons. That show featured overdubbed voiceovers to wildlife footage and featured the likes of comedians including Isy Suttie, Rhod Gilbert, Jon Richardson and Sarah Millican.

The one-hour comedy series will show a new perspective on absurd animal antics.

It is produced by BBC Studios’ L.A. production arm, the division behind ABC’s Dancing with the Stars and Nat Geo’s Life Below Zero and Breaking Bobby Bones.

Cult British Comedy ‘Peep Show’ In Development At FX With Karey Dornetto Writing Gender Reversal Remake
David Mitchell and Robert Webb in Peep Show (2003)
Cult British comedy Peep Show is getting another chance at a U.S. adaptation with a script in development at FX. The series, which ran for nine seasons on Channel 4, is getting a gender role reversal with the two leads – played by David Mitchell and Robert Webb in the UK original – set to be played by women.

Portlandia and Superstore writer and co-exec producer Karey Dornetto is writing the adaptation.

It is the latest attempt after Starz attempted a remake in 2016, while Fox took a run at a pilot, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki, in 2005 and Spike gave it a chance in 2008.

Sam Bain, who created the series with Jesse Armstrong (Succession), revealed the development in a self-penned article in The Guardian about diversity. “People sometimes ask if I look at my earlier work differently now – whether my shows would have been better if they had been more diverse.

‘Peep Show: Series Nine’ DVD Review
If I ever had a problem with Peep Show, it is that the characters aren’t particularly nice people. They like to think they are, particularly Mark (David Mitchell) with his snobbish selfish view on life and Jeremy (Robert Webb) …who is just Jeremy. In the end for me it’s the people like Super Hans (Matt King) who end up being more likable because he knows who he is, and just doesn’t give a damn.

Peep Show is a show that is built of uncomfortable humour based on the actions of a group of idiots, with the fact that the camera angles come from the actor’s viewpoints making it a little different than usual comedy shows. We get to hear their inner thoughts and get more of an insight into their actions. Whether you like the characters or not, this does make for interesting television.

Peep Show: saluting a cynical, honest, brilliant sitcom
facebook

twitter

google+

Peep Show, now airing its final series, is packed with precise, very funny writing that reflects unflattering truths about us all…

There’s a speech in Peep Show’s series nine opener that sums up the show’s comedic focus: the gap between the face we present to the world and our inner feelings. Talking to Mark, Jeremy confronts his friend’s essential hypocrisy. “I know you, Mark,” he says, “I know you like to pretend that you’re this stuffed shirt who reads incredibly boring books about dead people killing each other with bayonets and typhoid, but I know the truth.”

That truth, gleaned from years of friendship weaponised for this coup, is that Mark Corrigan isn’t, as he pretends to be, a rarefied type fascinated by nineteenth century arts movements, but instead “a pathetic human who likes Twirls and Downton and Bond and burgers.

Peep Show returns to Channel 4 for its final series on Wednesday the 11th of November, and here's the first trailer...

Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong's mighty Peep Show is poised to air its ultimate series on Channel 4, an era-ending ninth run that will bid a final adieu to Mark and Jez, Super Hans, Dobby and co.

Can we expect the El Dude Brothers to have matured gracefully in their final outing? Will we see Jez get a proper job and settle down to a life of responsiblity, while Mark gets over his trivial obsessions and learns about the rewards of generosity?

In a word? No. By the looks of this short new trailer, which debuted exclusively at The Guardian, Jez is living in an en-suite and Mark's trying to boost his sales record by conning his best friend into financial ruin. Brilliant.

What did Mitchell and Webb steal from the Peep Show set?
Peep Show wrapped up filming for its ninth and final series recently, and stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb helped themselves to a few mementos.

The pair – who play El Dude brothers Mark Corrigan and Jeremy Usborne on the show – revealed that they took home a few familiar items.

The Men with Ven are back! Peep Show wraps filming for final ever series

"I got Jeremy's poetry exercise book, with 'Up Yours, Bush' written on the cover," said Webb.

Mitchell added: "I had a picture from Mark's bedroom, of a Bentley. I don't know if it's ever been in shot, but it's definitely been there from the start.

"Quite often, you'd notice from one series to the next that something had been replaced by something similar. There's always a picture on the wall about bowling, but it's not remained the same picture."

Channel 4 previously announced that the last ever...

Peep Show is back on Channel 4 - one last time - from next month
The El Dude brothers are back in town, one last time, from next month.

Channel 4 has announced that the last ever series of Peep Show will begin on Wednesday, November 11 at 10pm.

The sitcom's ninth run will pick up some time after its eighth, which ended with Mark (David Mitchell) and Jeremy (Robert Webb) abandoned by Dobby (Isy Suttie) - despite both declaring their love for her.

As the final series begins, it really is the end of an era - Mark has a new flatmate and a new job working at a bank, while Jeremy has found himself some new - and rather constrictive - living quarters. When Jez turns to his old friend for a loan, Mark finally spies his chance for revenge...

All this, and the pair have to contend with a newly sober Super Hans (Matt King) - though it's unclear just how long his new health kick will last.

24 great comedy shows that deserve more love
We asked Den Of Geek’s writers to recommend brilliant comedy shows that deserve to have more of a fuss made about them. Here they are...

Banging a drum about stuff we love is more or less our remit on Den Of Geek - hence what many readers have started referring to as the ‘inexplicably regular' appearance of Statham, squirrels and Harold Bishop from Neighbours on these pages.

To that end then, we asked our writers which comedy shows (past and present, UK or otherwise, on TV, radio, or online…) deserved more praise, and here are the ones they chose. You might already like them too, or you might discover something new to dig out and enjoy. That’s the fun of it.

Please note that this list isn’t ranked in any order, nor is it exhaustive. It’s compiled from the opinions of a group of different people,...

Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled - What's the new Dave show all about?
Alan Davies has a new Dave show... but it doesn't have a title. As Yet Untitled - which begins tonight - sees the Qi star sitting down with a bunch of comedians for a bit of a natter - and the only 'format' is that they come up with a title for the episode at the end. Mainly, it's just funny, sometimes sad conversations with a bunch of interesting people... which seems novel. We caught up with Alan to find out more...

"We're looking right at one another, so you just talk to each other really. You get the sense that the audience are very engaged with it - I think just the way it's set up, you don't get a very fidgety, restless sort of a crowd. We didn't know how it would go, but...

Alan Davies on BBC all-male panel ban: 'Why would you announce that?'
Alan Davies has hit out at the BBC's decision to announce the fact that the corporation had banned all-male talent shows.

The Qi star's new Dave show As Yet Untitled begins on Monday and will feature a woman in every episode.

"I think it's important," he said. "I feel like I've been asked it a lot in recent years. The idea that there aren't any funny women around is so outdated, if it wasn't ten years ago.

"When they're queueing up to come on here - we've had Katherine Ryan and Isy Suttie and we still havent had Sara Pascoe or Claudia O'Doherty. There's lines and lines and lines of people coming. So there will always be a woman here, maybe two, maybe three. That's the intention."

However, he criticised the BBC's move to make the all-male panel show ban public, suggesting that it puts unreasonable pressure on female guests.

This critically acclaimed series, which proved a ratings success when it first aired on Comedy Central earlier in the year, with a second season to follow in 2014, is curated by Stewart Lee and features a cast of highly individual award-winning and break-through comedians, including Tony Law, Simon Munnery, Isy Suttie, David O’Doherty, Paul Foot, Andy Zaltzman, Henning Wehn, Josie Long, Eleanor Tiernan, David Kay and Bridget Christie.

The Alternative Comedy Experience was filmed in front of a real comedy club audience at The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh, faithfully capturing the unique atmosphere of one of the UK’s favourite and longest established live comedy clubs. It showcases a mix of modern day comedians offering material possibly too clever, thoughtful, radical, satirical, strange, or downright stupid to...

'Knightmare' special revival released on YouTube
Knightmare's new special episode has been released online.

The cult children's TV show has been revived as part of YouTube's Geek Week.

The new episode is produced by series creator Tim Child and features original cast members Mark Knight, Clifford Barry and Hugo Myatt.

"It's great to be back, it really is," said Barry. "It's astonishing, isn't it? I've done a lot of programmes over the years and it's still the one I get fan mail for, 20 years on."

Actress and comedian Isy Suttie - who features in the episode - added: "I'm a massive fan of the show and have been since I was a kid. I absolutely loved it and used to watch it every week and really wanted to be a contestant on it. So it is like a dream come true."

The new Knightmare was recorded in the original Knightmare Studio in Norwich.

Knightmare makes a triumphant return as part of YouTube's Geek Week. See for yourself, here...

From the nostalgia-synapse-firing opening credits to the dungeoneer's last step, this new Knightmare episode released as part of YouTube's Geek Week is a job well done. Isy Suttie (Peep Show) makes for a fine addition to the cast, and seeing Hugo Myatt re-don his Tregard gear is a joy unrivalled on a Monday morning.

Perhaps the best thing about this return to Knightmare Castle is that it's a proper episode, not a tongue-in-cheek parody or a knowing pastiche. It's good, clean, CGI fantasy fun. You can almost smell the Friday afternoon P.E. kit mouldering away in your school bag and taste the beans on toast...

Children's TV adventure series Knightmare is returning in August for a one-off special episode filmed for YouTube...

Isy Suttie on 'Peep Show' future: 'I don't know if Dobby will be back'
Isy Suttie has revealed that she is uncertain if she will appear in the ninth series of Peep Show.

Suttie's character Dobby left for New York at the end of the Channel 4 sitcom's eighth run, but the comic told Digital Spy that she would "love" to return.

"I don't know if I'm in it, because Dobby goes to New York," she explained. "But I haven't heard that I'm not, and I'd love to do it.

"I've done four series now, and it's been just so much fun and it really was my break, so I feel like I owe them everything."

Jeremy (Robert Webb) fell in love with Dobby over the course of Peep Show's last series, but Suttie ruled out the possibility of a romance between the pair.

"I think probably what would happen is they'd get really stoned and then have an argument - I think it...

Isy Suttie on 'Miss Wright': 'Music is a natural part of what I do'
Comedian, musician, actress and Peep Show star Isy Suttie has co-written and also stars in tonight's new Sky Living Love Matters one-off - the romantic musical comedy Miss Wright.

Suttie spoke to Digital Spy about her hopes for Miss Wright, her thoughts on musical theatre and why she used to reject men on the basis of their skincare regime...

Both Miss Wright and your recent Radio 4 show Love Letters were about romance - what is it about that subject that's so ripe for comedy?

"It's a thing that a lot of people can identify with, so regardless of their age or background, most people have had the experiences of either falling in love and it being requited, or that thing of having a crush on someone and them not even knowing…

"Or there's them rejecting you, and how horrible that can be. Or being dumped, or having to dump someone.

2013 preview: the cultural year ahead for women
From an Austen anniversary to a Sundance full of female talent, the new year is already packed with highlights. What are you looking forward to this year?

No one expects 2013 to be easy, but we'll take our kicks where we can, and only a week in, there are already cultural triumphs for women to celebrate. The band Haim, three sisters from California, stormed to the top of the BBC's Sound of 2013 list, and for the first time all five categories of the Costa prize were won by women. The frontrunner to take the overall prize on 29 January is Hilary Mantel, with her novel Bring Up the Bodies, but Mary and Bryan Talbot's graphic memoir, Dotter of Her Father's Eyes, has also been highly lauded.

There are plenty of other books to look forward to, including Bedsit Disco Queen by Tracey Thorn (Virago, February), Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld, (Doubleday, June), a...

Peep Show Season 8 DVD Review
Hearing the familiarity of the theme tune blast through the TV set will fill you with joy if you’re already a fan of Peep Show. If you’ve somehow not seen the brilliance that is Peep Show then you can go buy them all on DVD or even catch up now on Channel 4′s 4oD service. That way you won’t be lost in the El Dude brothers’ story nor of how incapable they are. You’ll be used to standard antics of the characters, their dialect and their paradoxical ways.

What’s the most impressive part is how after eight seasons of these children not at all growing up but changing only their surroundings and a few friends here and there that it’s still fresh. Maybe the familiarity adds to that but it’s been so long now that it’s hard to see these actors as anyone different.

Win: Peep Show Series 8 DVD
The multi award winning sitcom starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb is back for its 8th series on dvd from 26th December.

We have three copies of the DVD to give away to our readers.

Returning for an incredible eighth series after a two year break the hilarious Peep Show is back!

Peep show follows Mark Corrigan (Mitchell) and Jeremy Osbourne (Webb) and the latest developments in their increasingly dysfunctional lives.

Mark Corrigan is a man on a knife edge. Anal with a hint of Ocd; his glass is not so much half-full as fully empty. He probably spilt it himself. Jeremy Osbourne is Mark’s old university mate, who lives a fantasy life as a successful musician. Back in the real world, he’s a drifting waster. In stark contrast to Mark’s angst and self-loathing, Jez is carefree and narcissistic – and still convinced that he’s destined for...

Isy Suttie on 'Peep Show': 'I'd still do it when I'm 60' - video
Isy Suttie
Isy Suttie has said that she would be happy to star in Peep Show into her 60s. The stand-up comedian joined the show in series five as Mark's love interest Dobby in the comedy, which returns to Channel 4 for its eighth and ninth series over the next two years.

"There's no fat on the writing, it's very lean," Suttie told Digital Spy. "Everything's either a joke or it moves the plot forward, which is what you want, but it's actually really hard to do. It's all killer, no filler! As they say." She added: "I would always go back and work on it because I just think it's actually really hard to write a good sitcom. There aren't that many good ones, so I'd be a complete fool to say no. "At some point we'll be 60 and still living in a flat and Super Hans will still be smoking...

'Skins' bursts with colour and ideas, says Isy Suttie
Isy Suttie
Isy Suttie has said that Skins is attractive to comedians because it "bursts with colour and ideas". The stand-up played Nurse Pauline in the sixth season of the show, having previously worked on the E4 teen drama as a "comedy consultant".

"They used to send me the scripts and I used to see if they could be any funnier," Suttie told Digital Spy. "Whether it was a character thing, or, 'Hey hey, they could trip up on a banana skin!'" Of why so many comedians are well-suited to the show, (more)...

Digital Spy makes its stand-up comedy debut - video
Here we are. Less than a month after agreeing to become a stand-up comedian, I arrived at the opening night of Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival to do my first (and quite possibly last!) ever set. With the help of comedy tutor Marc Blake, I'd flung my personality down on paper, edited it into something coherent, stuck some jokes in and then practised saying it out loud. I had a comedy masterclass with Peep Show's fabulous Isy Suttie. But I was still terrified, sandwiched between four other hacks who seemed way less nervous than I felt! How did it go? Well, you can watch the video below to find out.

As you can see, not too bad! My fellow journalists-turned-stand-ups (Tom Latchem, Sophie Heath, Stephen Armstrong and eventual and deserved winner Toby Earle) were all lovely and hilarious. Compere Ian Stone (more)...

Stand-up comedy masterclass with Isy Suttie - video
Isy Suttie
When I agreed to this crazy "becoming a comedian" adventure towards the end of last year, one of the things which clinched it was the chance to meet and have a masterclass with a successful stand-up. So, I was thrilled that after practising my set at home for a bit, I finally got to visit Peep Show star Isy Suttie at Dave's UKTV HQ in Hammersmith.

Isy seemed quite confident about my chances of getting through the gig in one piece, which was very comforting! Before the end of the week, we'll be presenting the video of my debut gig at Dave's (more)...

Top 10 screen computer geeks
Just who are the geekiest computer geeks of the large and small screen? Here’s Michael’s list of suggestions…

Jim Carrey had a point when he said, “Free cable is the ultimate aphrodisiac”, as frankly, anyone who can hand out free cable is going to be popular.

However, even The Cable Guy might find his social influence supplanted these days by the nearest computer geek. Gradually, computers have developed from a niche interest into something that everyone depends on to get through life. As a result, the computer geek has enjoyed a transformation from outcast to linchpin.

The geek is a stock character of both the big screen and the small. A character such as Garth from Wayne's World doesn't fit into our narrow definition of a computer geek. Does he use his Amiga to create a colourful poster for his friends’ rock concert? Yes. Does he put a...

The confessions of a teenage tourist
As The Inbetweeners, the movie about a lads-only holiday, opens with record box-office takings, four British comedians recall their own youthful travels

Lucy Porter

When I was 16, my mate Carmel persuaded her uncle to lend a group of us his Spanish villa. We were all quite shy girls and not that popular at home, so we thought that abroad we could get tanned and kiss boys. We had loads of planning meetings and I put our travel documents in a folder with "Five Go Mad in Marbella" in bubble writing on the front. Unfortunately, the villa wasn't actually in Marbella, it was miles outside, up a steep hill. Thanks to my staff discount at Ravel, we'd all bought new plastic sandals. We walked into town once and were crippled.

After that, we stayed put and tried to sunbathe, but the place was riddled with flies and the retired British policeman...

Alan Davies: 'BBC shoddy over Whites axe'
Alan Davies
Alan Davies has criticised the way the BBC cancelled his show Whites. The comedy, which also starred Isy Suttie, Darren Boyd and Katherine Parkinson, was dropped by BBC Two in March after one series had aired. Davies has now told The Daily Telegraph that he believes the BBC should have treated the matter differently. "I got an email [informing me of the cancellation] from someone I'd never met," he said. "I've been working at BBC Comedy for 16 years, so I thought I could have had a bit more than that. It was pretty shoddy." Davies also criticised the BBC for dropping the sitcom in the first place, saying: "They're not interested (more)...
