Dead Space: Salvage, written by Antony Johnston and illustrated by Christopher Shy, is a grim, atmospheric addition to the Dead Space universe that perfectly captures the terror and existential dread at the heart of the original video game series. Set between the events of the first Dead Space game and Dead Space: Extraction, Dead Space: Salvage follows a group of opportunistic scavengers known as the “Magpies” as they stumble upon the derelict starship Usg Ishimura. What initially seems like the find of a lifetime quickly spirals into a nightmarish encounter with the Necromorph threat that decimated the ship’s original crew.
Johnston’s story stays true to the bleakness and despair that fans of Dead Space expect. The narrative doesn’t simply rehash the events of the game, but rather explores the broader consequences of the Marker’s...

TheJohn Wick franchise has become one of Hollywood's biggest recent successes. Despite lacking an established intellectual property, the movies broke through in a space increasingly ruled by sequels and adaptations. With Keanu Reeves as the leading man, the movies feature action and a complicated political scene that only gets more complicated with every new release. The world has even begun to expand, thanks to the success of its recent spin-off, The Continental: From the World of John Wick. Having been released on Peacock and Prime Video, it showcased the Continental Hotel long before John Wick's retirement.
Though John Wick managed to set itself apart, there were places where it fell into the realm of traditional action. The gun-fu fighting style was new, but the hero himself was not.

Atomic Blonde fans would love to see the 2017 Charlize Theron action thriller get a sequel, and there was certainly plenty of room for the return of MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton. However, in a recent interview with MovieWeb, director David Leitch explained why the chances of seeing Atomic Blonde 2 are currently quite slim, even though he would 1000% return to that world if he had the chance.
Charlize Therons appearance in Atomic Blonde is just one of several roles that have seen her throwing herself into the action genre, and it remains popular on streaming platforms. Just like Leitch, the actress has frequently expressed an interest in reprising her role in a sequel, but the idea of a sequel materializing is being held in limbo due to the age-old problem of rights issues. During an extensive interview, Leitch said:

Made on a budget of $30 million, the action thriller Atomic Blonde earned $100 million at the box office and was meant to launch a franchise, with screenwriter Kurt Johnstad saying he envisioned the story as a trilogy. But, seven years after Focus Features (a division of Universal Pictures) released the film, a sequel has still not made it into production – and during an interview with The Direct, director David Leitch revealed what the hold-up is: Atomic Blonde 2 has gotten caught up in rights issues.
Atomic Blonde was a passion project for star Charlize Theron, who produced the film through her company Denver and Delilah Productions. Denver and Delilah started developing Atomic Blonde 2 in 2018, and in 2020 Theron revealed that the sequel was set up at the Netflix streaming service. That was the last we heard of it… until this new update from Leitch.

Action movies are some of the best, most entertaining pieces of cinema in the film industry, delivering a steady stream of high-octane violence to audiences. In 2014, the genre was forever changed when Keanu Reeves debuted as the titular lead of John Wick, casting him as a former Mafia assassin on a revenge mission against the man who killed his dog. Known for its stylish cinematography, brilliant fight choreography, likable hero and great characters, John Wick raised the bar for what constitutes a good action movie.
Since the release of John Wick, major film studios have produced intense action movies more often than ever before, leaving behind the generic shoot-em-up flicks of the past and adopting a more contemporary approach to filmmaking. The genre has since gained more depth, often tinged with the likes of comedy, horror, war and other complimentary genres. Ranging from World War II tales of vengeance to...

A former double agent breaks down the 2017 Charlize Theron spy film Atomic Blonde, giving the movie a high score for its accuracy despite some glaring flaws. The film, which also stars James McAvoy and John Goodman, follows Lorraine Broughton (Theron), an elite spy in MI6 who travels into the heart of Berlin to retrieve a priceless dossier and take down a ruthless espionage ring. Once there, she teams up with an embedded station chief to navigate her way through a deadly game of spies.
In a video for Insider, former FBI agent Naveed Jamali, who also worked for and against the Russian military intelligence agency the Gru, gave Atomic Blonde a 9/10 for its accuracy. Jamali noted that the film depicted Broughton's ability to gain the trust of those she's working against realistically, though he did state that he found Broughton's use of disguises and a second language to be a bit unnecessary.

Following a relatively quiet 2024, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron is poised to return to the big screen with four upcoming movie projects. Among them is Atomic Blonde 2, the action-packed sequel to the 2017 hit spy thriller Atomic Blonde currently being developed by Focus Features. In addition to reprising her role as the ice-cold MI6 Agent Lorraine Broughton, Theron will co-produce the picture through her Denver and Delilah production company.
Although Atomic Blonde was criticized for adding little to the Cold War espionage subgenre in terms of story, fans and critics agree that the movie's visceral fight scenes are among the movie's strong suits. Under former stunt performer turned director, David Leitch, Theron performed nearly 100% of her own harrowing stunt work in the film, including the jaw-dropping stairwell brawl that continues to be talked about seven years later. Charlize Theron stars in Atomic Blonde, directed by David Leitch (John Wick) and based on the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, and the Atomic Blonde ending explained how she double-crossed everyone. Theron stars as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent assigned to Berlin in November 1989, just as the Berlin Wall was about to fall. Her mission is to rendezvous with MI6's Berlin Station operative David Percival (James McAvoy) and recover the List, which contains all of MI6's deep cover operatives in both East and West Berlin.
Atomic Blonde showcases Theron's incredibly visceral prowess as an action hero and Leitch's inventive, bloody set pieces. However, the actual plot of Atomic Blonde may leave viewers confused between all the fight and chase sequences that increase in ferocity as the movie wears on. Movie titles need to be snappier than book titles to grab attention on marquees. Sometimes title changes clarify the movie's content, making them clearer and more concise. For example, Blade Runner is a more enticing title compared to the book's original title, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
From Die Hard to Goodfellas to Field of Dreams, movie adaptations of books often change their titles to something snappier and more memorable than that of the source material. Literary titles can be poetic and ambiguous to intrigue readers, but movie titles need to be quick and concise enough to grab peoples attention on a marquee. Not many viewers would plunk down a few bucks to watch a movie called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but a lot of people would be enticed by a movie called Blade Runner (if E.T. didnt exist).

The director of The Fall Guy, David Leitch, has received praise for the film; however, his best film is Atomic Blonde, a stylized spy film set in the Cold War. Atomic Blonde's gritty and realistic action scenes set it apart from other Cold War spy movies, focusing on brutality over glamor. Director David Leitch's approach demystifies the spy genre, showcasing the exhaustion and pain of espionage work.
Thanks to The Fall Guy's positive critical and audience reception, director David Leitch has enjoyed some newfound interest from audiences. Specifically, Leitch's history as a stunt performer-turned-director and his filmography of gritty action movies caught viewers' attention. This, naturally, led to moviegoers debating which of Leitch's action movies was the best. Many picked the first John Wick, which he co-directed, while others were torn between his solo-directed heavy hitters like Bullet Train or Deadpool 2. All these are great picks, but...

Before the female-led spinoff Ballerina, Atomic Blonde already served as the perfect response to the John Wick series nearly a decade ago. Both Atomic Blonde and John Wick share similar themes, styles, and action-packed scenes, making them ideal for a potential crossover. While Atomic Blonde 2 is currently in development limbo, the introduction of the Ballerina spinoff could pave the way for future crossover opportunities.
John Wick is preparing for its female spinoff, Ballerina, but the female response to Wick had already arrived seven years ago, though it was quickly forgotten. One of the most recent successes in the action genre is the John Wick saga. Created by Derek Kolstad, the saga began in 2014 with the movie simply titled John Wick, directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves. The Old Guard's sequel is in post-production, proving success and potentially reviving a forgotten action movie led by Charlize Theron. The success of The Old Guard fast-tracked the sequel while Atomic Blonde 2 remains stuck, but hope remains for its release. Netflix's interest in well-built action movies with Charlize Theron could push Atomic Blonde 2 development after The Old Guard's success.
The sequel to Netflix’s The Old Guard got a surprising and exciting update, and it’s also good news for a forgotten but more successful action movie also led by Charlize Theron. In 2020, Charlize Theron continued to show her skills in the action genre with the superhero film The Old Guard. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard became one of Netflix’s most popular movies of 2020, as well as a critical success.

Don’t expect Charlize Theron to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. When asked if she knew when she was coming back to the franchise after her cameo at the end of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Theron was all shrugs.
“I haven’t gotten a call. Is that bad?” Theron told MTV reporter Josh Horowitz during the “Fast X” premiere in Rome. When pressed on the issue, the star assured Horowitz that she wasn’t lying three times then made a joke that he should cut her answer.
“No, that’s what we’re running,” Horowitz quipped back.

Atomic Blonde 2 is, in a surprise reveal, a thing that’s happening… on Netflix, no less.
Charlize Theron, whose Netflix sci-fi action thriller, The Old Guard, just arrived on July 10, has revealed plans in an interview with Total Film to field another action offering for the streaming giant. However, rather than immediately following up that film, said offering will be a sequel to Atomic Blonde, the stylish Theron-headlined 2017 late-Cold-War spy thriller. Indeed, while there’s no news to cite for The Old Guard 2, Theron does reveal that she successfully pitched the once-mooted Atomic Blonde sequel—having also served as a producer on the original film—to Netflix through Scott Stuber, Head of Original Films.
“We went into [The Old Guard] talking about [a sequel] as a possibility, and it’s definitely something that excites us,” she explains. “We took [Atomic Blonde 2] to them and Scott Stuber, was really interested in it.

Atomic Blonde 2 is officially in development, and Netflix is making it happen. There has been some talk of a sequel to the 2017 action flick, which was directed by David Leitch and stars Charlize Theron in the lead role. Now, that talk has turned into something more concrete, as the streaming service is in the early stages of putting the follow-up together.
According to a new report, Atomic Blonde 2 is in early development at Netflix. No screenwriter has been attached to the project yet, but Charlize Theron is set to produce and is expected to reprise her role as well. There is no word at this time if David Leitch would return to direct, but he has since gone on to direct massive blockbusters such as Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, so his dance card may be a little full. Beth Kono is also set to produce via Denver and Delilah Productions.

10 Best Non-Superhero Comic-Book Movies of the 2010s, From ‘Atomic Blonde’ to ‘Snowpiercer’ (Photos)
Superhero movies, it has been (accurately) said, rule the box office. But although billions of dollars are made every year adapting comic books about costumed vigilantes, there is a whole universe of comic-book storytelling that frequently goes unexplored. Human dramas, light comedies, sci-fi and action comics alike, these works are frequently brought to the screen but sometimes overlooked by mainstream audiences who equate comics with the superhero genre. We were paying attention. These are the non-superhero comic book films that moved us and thrilled us this decade.
10. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (2017)

I don't know about you, but I thought Charlize Theron's hardcore action thriller Atomic Blonde was an awesomely entertaining film. She went all out for that role and in the process of shooting that first film, she seriously got the crap beat out of her. She even lost some teeth in the process! It looks like she's ready to put herself through even more pain!
During a recent interview with IndieWire, all she said was "We're working on a sequel." She didn't go into any details. Just that there's a sequel and it's in development. I enjoyed the first film, so I'm totally up for a high-octane, badass sequel!
In a previous interview, comic creator Antony Johnston talked about a possible sequel, saying:
"Everybody involved wants to do it again, from a creative point of view. All of the creators - [director] Dave [Leitch] , Kurt, Charlize - everybody wants to make another movie.

Looks like Ridley Scott has found a comic book that he wants to adapt into a feature film. The director is currently in talks with Fox to direct a film based on Queen and Country, the Eisner award-winning graphic novel by Greg Rucka.
Queen and Country is a spy thriller that is set in a fictional British Secret Intelligence Service. The story centers on an operative named Tara Chace, "a top British intelligence agent who is used as bait to draw out an international terrorist after an attack in London."
I've never read the comic, but I love a good spy thriller! This seems like it will be a great project for Scott, who most recently directed the fantastic film All The Money in the World. Scott has also been in talks with Disney to direct The Merlin Saga.

Stars: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Boutella, Bill Skarsgård, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Roland Moller | Written by Kurt Johnstad | Based on “The Coldest City” by Antony Johnston & Sam Hart | Directed by David Leitch
An ice cool Charlize Theron kicks plenty of ass in this stylish Cold War action thriller from the co-director of John Wick, but the script leaves a lot to be desired.
Sporting a distractingly dodgy British accent and a Debbie Harry-style peroxide blonde hair-do, Theron plays MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, who’s sent into Cold War Berlin to investigate the murder of a fellow agent (Sam Hargrave) and recover a missing list of undercover agents. Her contact in Berlin is shady MI6 station officer David Percival (James McAvoy), who seems to have gone a little too deep undercover as a contraband-toting wheeler-dealer and appears to have his own agenda.

Charlize Theron excels as an action lead in this cold war spy story, adapted from graphic novel The Coldest City
I can’t think of any actor more deserving of their own pulpy action franchise than Charlize Theron. Having stolen Mad Max: Fury Road from Tom Hardy one-handed (literally), she is relentlessly, murderously brilliant in this adaptation of Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest City. The setting is Berlin just before the fall of the Wall; the paranoid hangover of the cold war is giving way to a new era of hungry opportunism. A British agent has been murdered; a valuable list is missing. And MI5 asset Lorraine Broughton (Theron, looking like Debbie Harry dipped in venom) is flown in to clear up the mess. There she butts heads with fellow agent David Percival (James McAvoy, skeevy-sexy, accessorised with beer sweats and casual treachery) and has a fling with...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The living, breathing, bleeding life of the breathtaking fight scenes cannot overcome confusingly twisty spy intrigue and multiple male gazes on the story. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women; love spy stuff
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Berlin, 1989. The Wall is about to fall, but the Cold War isn’t over yet. MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Charlize Theron: The Fate of the Furious, Kubo and the Two Strings) is sent in to retrieve a missing list of all spies and operatives on all sides, if she can find it before the Soviets do. It’s an “atomic bomb of information,” not least because the list includes the identity of a double agent known as Satchel. Atomic Blonde — I guess because she’s so hot?...

Theron brings a sense of style – and some serious martial arts chops – to this frenetic spy caper set at the end of the cold war
Atomic Blonde is an action spy thriller starring Charlize Theron as the neon-lit badass warrior, sashaying frostily through many a Berlin nightclub in revealing evening wear, where she might accept with a knowing half-smile a Stoli-on-the-rocks and some badinage at the bar from various admirers, male and female, before putting the smackdown on some brutish East German thug.
It is adapted by screenwriter Kurt Johnstad from the graphic novel The Coldest City by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, and like many movies derived from graphic novels, it tends towards the frenetically edited, hyperactively silly and Ritchie-esque, and this isn’t helped by the flashback structure. But Atomic Blonde also has some terrifically good one-on-one combat scenes – much more continuously and realistically shot than the rest...

It seems like every few years the action genre gets an infusion of new blood. In the 80s it was Jackie Chan and his crazy stunts, in the 90s it was John Woo's Hong Kong cinema. In 2006 Neveldine and Taylor blew our minds with Crank and 2011 brought us The Raid: Redemption which seems to have kick-started a return to balls-to-the wall action culminating in John Wick, its sequel and now Atomic Blonde.
Based on Antony Johnston's "Atomic Blonde: The Coldest City" graphic novel series, the movie stars Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, an MI6 agent sent to Berlin in final weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Her mission is to track down an informant, code mane "Spyglass," who is in possession of a list of active field agents, among them a double agent. [Continued ...]...

Nobody does the spy thing better than Charlize Theron – and unlike 007, she does it in heels. Director David Leitch, a former stuntman who co-directed John Wick, makes sure his dynamite star stays untamed and is up for anything. Based on the graphic novel series The Coldest City by Antony Johnston, Sam Hart and Steven Perkins, Atomic Blonde is set in 1989, during the thawing of the Cold War and the last days of the Berlin Wall. This allows Leitch to combine brutal, no-holds-barred action with angsty shades of vintage spy-vs-spy espionage...

The Coldest City, Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s graphic novel about the dangerous world of espionage, has been simmering on the back-burner ever since Charlize Theron swooped in to acquire the screen rights a few years back. We’ve already had a number of teasers and trailers for Atomic Blonde, and it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer. With Academy Award winner Charlize Theron in the lead role, the action-mystery-thriller adapts the 2012 graphic novel series The Coldest City (by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart), and sets the Mad Max: Fury Road star in an espionage-revenge narrative under the direction of John Wick’s David Leitch. The latest teaser, however, takes that anticipation to the next level.
It’s a glorious thing of beauty, this fight sequence, because it communicates to the audience both that the director is under no illusions about what he’s doing, and the star is having a whole lot of fun with it. We need no context for this teaser, because everything we need to know can be found within the subtext.

I've heard there's a jaw-dropping 10-minute long, real-time brawl to look forward to!
By the final stretch of this real-time brawl, Theron and her opponents are noticeably battered, panting, unsteady on their feet, and frequently backing away from each other to catch their breath and summon a second (and third and fourth and fifth) wind. Amid the shiny, polished superhero movies we’re getting every few months in theaters, there seems to be a bit of a resurgence of edgier, more hard-hitting, mid-budget action fare. Between films like John Wick, Lucy, and The Accountant, it seems that audiences are growing hungrier for things that are different from the stuff we’ve been fed over the past several years. That’s nothing against the age of superheroes we’re living in (we Love our comic book movies), but it never hurts to change things up, and when all said and done, it’s nice to see other smaller, more original content find success.
Months ago, we got a chance to see the first trailer for such a project in Atomic Blonde. The film, which stars Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and Sofia Boutella, premiered at SXSW, and featured a kickass female spy. Helming the project is David Lietch,...

The Coldest City, Antony Johnston and Sam Hart’s graphic novel about the dangerous world of espionage, has been simmering on the back-burner ever since Charlize Theron swooped in to acquire the screen rights a few years back. That’s hardly surprising, either, given the actress’ busy, busy schedule, but we’re now only a few months away from welcoming Johnston and Hart’s Cold War thriller onto the big screen in the form of Atomic Blonde.
Universal has been busy promoting the release off the back of extremely positive reviews coming out of SXSW, and their campaign continues apace today with a brand new promo for David Leitch’s spy thriller, in which Theron’s best-in-class MI6 agent can be seen beating up goons in all kinds of brutal ways. And we use the term ‘beating up’ quite lightly.

We heard the slowed-down strains of New Order’s “Blue Monday” in the first Atomic Blonde trailer, which introduced Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton, a highly-trained assassin with killer looks (and boots). That refrain is still part of the new trailer, though the track now plays at regular speed to accompany more of Lorraine’s death-defying stunts. She uses her spiked heels as weapons, survives a car crash, and bludgeons some more goons to death while admitting that her life as a secret agent will eventually kill her—just not today. James McAvoy stars as an oddly chipper agent embedded in Germany, who quickly becomes infatuated with Lorraine. But she’s way more interested in the French contact played by Sofia Boutella.
Directed by David Leitch and adapted from Antony Johnston’s The Coldest City, Atomic Blonde knocks its way into theaters July 28.

Before the world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival last month, Universal debuted the Atomic Blonde trailer, which gave fans their first look at Charlize Theron as a deadly British assassin. The buzz swirling around this film has certainly grown since then, with the studio releasing the second trailer today, along with a new poster and photos, with even more intense action that could make this action-thriller one of this summer's sleeper hits. Oscar winner Charlize Theron explodes into summer in Atomic Blonde, a breakneck action-thriller that follows MI6's most lethal assassin through a ticking time bomb of a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.
