Russell Wilson has been named the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 season.

It was a heated Qb competition this summer, with the 35-year-old athlete signing a one year deal with the team earlier this year. The Steelers then brought in young quarterback Justin Fields as some competition, and it was largely a mystery about who would win the starting job. Justin will act as the backup to Russell.

Coach Mike Tomlin confirmed today that Russell would be the starter for the opening game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday (September 8).

Russell last played for the Denver Broncos, but was benched by the end of last season. Justin was originally drafted by the Chicago Bears before heading to the Steelers.

The NFL season kicks off on Thursday (September 5).

Musicians Chris Stapleton, Snoop Dogg and drummer Cindy Blackman Santana’s cover version of Phil Collins’ chart-topping 1981 classic, “In the Air Tonight,” is the new theme song of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” the cabler announced on Monday.

The collab premiered ahead of both Monday night games: The Saints at Panthers game, which started at 7:15 p.m. Et on ESPN, and the Browns vs. Steelers game, which began at 8:15 pm Et on ABC. Dwayne Haskins, who signed as a quarterback to the Pittsburgh Steelers, died early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle on a South Florida highway. He was 24 years old.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Lt. Indiana Miranda confirmed the accident on westbound Interstate 595 to ESPN. Haskins was pronounced dead at the scene. There are currently no details available as to why the football player was on the highway at the time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers organization offered a statement on Haskins’ death from head coach Mike Tomlin on Saturday morning.

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin’s statement reads. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest works, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many.

Ex-Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who is suing the National Football League for discrimination in its hiring practices, has landed another NFL job.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have tabbed Flores to be a senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. Flores was hired by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who is one of three Poc head coaches in the league.

Flores was surprisingly fired by the Miami Dolphin following the season. He subsequently sued all 32 NFL teams for discriminatory hiring practices after head coaching interviews didn’t pan out, claiming the talks were prefunctory and merely in satisfaction of the league’s “Rooney Rule,” which mandates that teams interview two minority candidates when they have openings.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that they have hired Brian Flores — the former Miami Dolphins head coach who filed a lawsuit against the NFL and several teams earlier this month over racist hiring practices — as their new senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach.

Flores joins a coaching staff lead by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, currently the second-longest tenured head coach in the NFL (behind Bill Belichick) and — following Flores’ Dolphins firing and the Houston Texans’ recent hiring of Lovie Smith — one of only two black head coaches in the league.

Attorneys for Brian Flores, the ex-Miami Dolphins coach who is filing a class action suit against the league for not making a greater effort at recruiting minority coaches, have responded to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s statement concerning diversity and inclusion.

The Flores complaint (read it Here) is a proposed class-action case naming the league, the Dolphins, the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos as defendants. “John Doe teams 1-29” also are named, which could enable other class-action participants to target additional teams.

The lawsuit’s timing could not be worse for the league, which is gearing up for the Feb. 13 Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Ex-Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores is suing the National Football League and its teams for racists hiring practices.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Manhattan federal court, alleges that the NFL “remains rife with racism, particularly when it comes to the hiring and retention of Black Head Coaches, Coordinators and General Managers.”

Flores, a longtime assistant with the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick who is widely considered to be one of the league’s brightest young coaches, was fired in January after his third season as head coach of the Dolphins.

In comments likely to encounter some push-back, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters on a conference call Thursday that the league is planning games in stadiums with fans this fall.

According to multiple media reports and accounts on social media, Goodell also said training camps will open on time this summer, meaning all players would report to camps by July 28.

Goodell said the plan is to “get ready for games at our stadiums and to engage our fans both in stadiums and through our media partners,” according to an account of the call by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Measures such as seat covers and extensive testing are among the precautions planned.

Officials earlier Thursday scrubbed the annual Hall of Fame game and enshrinement ceremony. They are considering jettisoning some of the other pre-season games, accelerating a move already under way as the league prepares to adopt a 17-game regular season and a shorter pre-season.

People can exclusively announce that Dancing with the Stars season 25 winner Jordan Fisher will sing the National Anthem and perform as part of halftime festivities at the NFL’s 2018 Pro Bowl at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 28.
