Crime Junkie creator and host Ashley Flowers’ Audiochuck, a juggernaut podcast company in true crime and mystery storytelling, has received a $40 million minority investment from Peter Chernin’s The Chernin Group. It will leverage its first-ever outside capital to scale the company into its next phase of growth.

Founded in 2017 by Flowers in Indianapolis, Audiochuck is one of the largest podcast networks in the industry. Its Crime Junkie flagship launched the powerhouse to prominence, ranking as Apple Podcasts’ No. 1 true crime podcast and No. 2 overall podcast of 2024.

In 2021, Audiochuck signed a 3-year (2022-2024) deal with SiriusXM, which SiriusXM renewed in 2024 for a fourth year (2025). Since its inception, Audiochuck has steadily expanded its audio portfolio to over 20 weekly and seasonal shows.

Audiochuck, the true crime and mystery-focused podcast company, has raised $40 million from The Chernin Group in a bid to substantially expand its business.

Founded in 2017 and led by Ashley Flowers, the host of Crime Junkie, the investment by Tcg is the first time the company has raised outside capital. Audiochuck will use the cash to “help the company diversify and expand business operations through its next phase of growth.”

That will inlude staffing up and ordering more programming to take advantage of a true crime podcast space that is still growing, despite a crowded marketplace. Crime Junkie was Apple Podcasts’ No. 2 podcast of the year, underscoring the scale of Flowers’ flagship show. Audiochuck also has a deal with SiriusXM.

The Chernin Group and Night, Inc. are launching Night Capital, a new investment company with commitments of 100 million, to acquire established consumer-facing companies in partnership with leading talent.

Alexandra Moore, a former executive from Amazon who focused on mergers and acquisitions, will lead Night Capital as its founding managing director.

Tcg has also invested directly in Night, where Tcg co-founder and partner Mike Kerns will be joining the board.

Night Capital directors include Night founder and CEO Reed Duchscher, Night president Ezra Cooperstein, Moore, Kearns and Tcg principal Jacob Smilovitz.

“Night has been at the forefront of the talent ecosystem and the communities built on the internet. The media investor and former Fox chief has formed The North Road Company after quietly acquiring the U.S. production assets of Red Arrow Studios in a deal with Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 said to be worth about 180 million.

The Red Arrow units will combine with the existing Chernin Entertainment banner as the backbone of the new venture that will focus on producing movies, scripted and unscripted TV programs and documentaries, among other content. As part of the North Road transaction, Chernin has also acquired the remaining 50 of Words + Pictures, the documentary production company that Chernin launched last year with ESPN alum Connor Schell and Chernin Entertainment’s Jesse Jacobs.

The Chernin Group co-founder Peter Chernin is rolling up three content studios into one new mega-project, backed by 800 million in financing from two private equity firms.

Chernin is launching The North Road Company, a global multi-genre film and TV studio that will include ownership of Chernin Entertainment (Ford v Ferrari, New Girl); and Words + Pictures (The ESPYs), the venture launched by former ESPN executive Connor Schell, and which was backed by Chernin.

But North Road is also in the market for acquisitions, with the first being the U.S. assets of Red Arrow Studios (Love Is Blind, The Circus).

The purchase price for Red Arrow Studios’ U.S. assets was 180 million, according to a source familiar with the deal. Red Arrow had been owned by Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 Group, which had been looking at potential deal opportunities since before the pandemic.
