Brooklyn Nine-Nine features great character dynamics throughout its eight seasons, and one star recently recalled creating one of the best bonds of the show with the late Andre Braugher. Braugher played the serious but lovable Captain Holt in the NBC sitcom. He passed away in 2023, but his legacy remains with both fans of his work and his co-stars.

And Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg reflected on his time working with Braugher in an interview with People. The upbeat and lighthearted personality of Samberg's Jake Peralta created the perfect contrast to Braugher's police captain, delivering plenty of comical moments on-screen.

Andy Samberg says every table read of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” reminded him how rare his connection with Andre Braugher was—an ease he now misses “a lot,” he told Amy Poehler during a new episode of her podcast “Good Hang.” Braugher, who died from lung cancer in December 2023, played stoic Captain Raymond Holt opposite Samberg’s impulsive detective Jake Peralta across the comedy’s 2013-2021 run.

Asked what worked behind the scenes, Samberg recalled their first table read: “He walked in, we said hello, and the rhythm clicked in the first scene.” He praised Braugher as “deeply moral and kind and pleasant and smart,” adding that the cast “absolutely loved him.”

The friendship deepened as Braugher—best known for hard-edged drama—experimented with comedy. Though initially unsure of his timing, he quickly mastered deadpan deliveries that became a hallmark of the series, Samberg said, remembering crew reactions when Braugher “flipped the switch” for serious moments.

"Severance" does have some black comedy elements to its workplace satire, in which a group of people have gone through the eponymous process of severance, in which they have an "innie" who works at a strange and mysterious multinational conglomerate and an "outie" who lives a life outside of work and has no idea what their innie does during the day (and vice versa for the innies knowing nothing about their outies). But that show is largely a dark thriller in which the main characters struggle to regain their independence while being controlled by the enigmatic people who run Lumon Industries.

At the height of the season, when many of our characters are in crisis, Compassion (personified as a new creature voiced by Holly Hunter) emerges as a crucial way forward. Ultimately, though, this season is about the importance of sticking by and supporting your friends, especially when life gets overwhelming and messy.
